Rate this book
Isla Rayer has been used her entire life for her psychic gift of foreseeing and empathy so when Scottish Highland Laird, Erik Buchanan, comes to her wanting her to use her gift to find his missing brother, she is not surprised. What she does find surprising however, is the attraction that forms between her and the handsome Laird. But nothing is simple in 17th Century Scotland, and love is no exception.

After going their separate ways, Isla is kidnapped and held captive by Dugald Kemp who wanted her for her gift...at first. After enduring an entire year of the worst brutality, Isla escapes and goes into hiding, knowing she is forever changed and no longer the woman she once was.

When Dugald finds her once again, she is left barely alive and all Isla wants is to return to her cottage on Buchanan lands, the only place that ever felt like home. After finding Isla, battered and on the brink of death, Erik vows the foulest kinds of revenge on the monster who has. brutalised his woman.

But can Erik save Isla from the beast who still hunts her? Can he hold on to the only woman he has ever loved?

Goodreads doesn't have a synopsis for this book, so I added a little more detail in my review. Of course, I always overdue it 😉

Plot: Isla has been used her entire life for her gift of sight. Now, she has taken safety in an abandoned cottage. Isla hopes for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, that doesn't last long. Laird Erik Buchanan and his mother need her help. The Laird's brother has been missing for 3 years and they can't find any trace of him. Isla reluctantly agrees, but can't promise anything.

Erik can't explain why he's drawn to Isla, but he can't stay away from her cottage. Isla feels the same pull, but isn't ready to trust these new feelings. Then one night, she finally has a vision of where Liam is being held. Luckily, Erik arrives just in nick of time to save his brother.

Now, that it's known to the clan that Isla has the sight, Isla knows she cannot stay. It's hard because this cottage is the only real home she's ever had. She's also can't stand to watch Erik marry, which he will one day. Before she leaves, Erik stops by to thank her. They have one glorious night before he foolishly let's her leave. He regrets it immediately, but it's too late!

The last 5 years have not been kind to Isla. The worst is when she's taken by a madman, named Dugald. Isla spends a year being brutally beaten and raped. One night she finally is able to escape. She eventually ends up working at an inn and starts to have real friends. Unfortunately, Dugald tracks her down and beats her. He only stops when he thinks she's dead. Isla's new friends, upon her request, takes her home to her old cottage.

Erik is horrified to find Isla near death. He sends for the best healer. This is the woman he loves and he will never let her go again! Erik will have his revenge on Dugald and it will be a slow brutal death. The problem is finding the slippery devil.

So can Isla heal from the brutal life she was forced to endure and embrace love again or is it too late?

Liked:
1. Isla is strong and resilient. She endures so much pain, yet doesn't let it defeat her. I couldn't help but admire her.
2. Erik was a fair Laird, but his enemies are wise to fear his wrath. I love how he cares for Isla after her attack. He's patient and understanding. This is the woman he loves and nothing will change that!
3. The romance was wonderfully built up. I was so happy when this couple were finally reunited.
4. I love that the author doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of the 17th century Highlands. Women did not have an easy life. I also appreciated how Erik never flinched when punishing his enemies. Too many modern authors don't want their H to be a cold-blooded killer, even when it's necessary. It's unrealistic!
5. The villain's death was very brutal and satisfying. This isn't really a spoiler because the book would be terrible if Dugald didn't get his just dessert!

Dislike:
1. Why was his brother kidnapped? The author mentions the culprits, but not the reason why they choose Liam nor why they kept him alive for 3 long years.
2. The MC each get their own chapters with their own POV. I'm not a fan of this style. I also think that some scenes got a little repetitive because of this type of writing.

Conclusion: this book was a promising debut! It was an engrossing story with many twist and turns. I'm glad I gave it a try!

This was a good debut book.
The story of a young girl who has been ill treated since she was born. Her Mother knowing she had special powers. Made her read people future for money, even though she was only 6 years old. She ran away when she got older.
Eventually she meets Erik the Buchanan Laird. Who is the only person who has ever been kind to her. Knowing she was not good enough for him. She leaves.
Her life is ruined every time people realise she is a Seer. She then has to move on to the next village.
A evil man abducted her and abused her. Eventually she escaped him.
Erik has been looking for her, but not been able to find her.

This was interesting from start to finish.
Even if you don’t read many highlanders books. This is still a good read. Tissues needed.

I really liked the main character — her thoughts, her voice, and her strength of will. Despite going through so many difficult experiences, she remained kind, resilient, and full of light. What I especially appreciated was that she chose to learn how to protect herself instead of shutting down or breaking after everything she had endured.

The book is written from two perspectives, Isla’s and Erik’s, and I have to admit that I enjoyed Isla’s chapters much more. Her voice resonated with me more strongly throughout the story.

What I felt was missing was the motivation of the main villain. He committed terrible acts and showed extreme cruelty, and I found it difficult to accept that it was simply “because that’s who he is.” Personally, I feel there should be something deeper behind that kind of behavior. But that’s just my own preference — I like understanding all the characters, even the villains.
