With their rugged good looks and Southern charm, it’s obvious why Cash Barlow and Sawyer Knight are America’s favorite baseball players. As the sports reporter sent to document their rise to fame, I was hoping our intimate interviews would catapult my career. Instead, I found myself being seduced…by both of them.
It’s not like they’re easy to resist. I’m spending every moment of the day with two hunky baseball gods polite enough to say “yes ma’am” and filthy enough to make me blush. And the more I study them – the more I notice the furtive glances and lingering touches – the more I realize that Cash and Sawyer aren’t only best friends. But when I promise to keep their secret, they reveal another of their own.
They don’t just want each other. And when these star baseball players want something, they get it. And now they want me.
But each time the three of us give into temptation, we’re breaking rules that threaten all of our careers. Should we risk it all for our unconventional love? Or will this baseball season end with three broken hearts?
High Heat is a spicy MMF poly novella (20,000 words) with a guaranteed Happily Ever After. Read in public at your own risk!
On the one hand, this is a perfectly fine MMF baseball romance! On the other hand, I am me and I had a hard time getting past the professional ethics violation of a reporter sleeping with the players she's profiling and the pure fantasy that Cash and Sawyer would play on the same team for high school, the minors, and the majors. And they're starting a rookie pitcher almost every game?! Not to mention In what universe would this ever happen?!
I just wish Darcy had stayed the course and not gotten involved with them until after she filed her last article. The idea that she wouldn't lose her career after this is laughable. Professional ethics exist for a reason and there is no universe where I would be okay with her being given a pass like this.
Characters: Cash is a 23 year old bisexual white pitcher. Sawyer is a 24 year old bisexual white first baseman. Cash and Sawyer have been best friends and boyfriends since 16. Darcy is a 24 year old bisexual sports reporter. This is set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Content notes: past child verbal and emotional abuse, past emotional abuse (FMC's ex-boyfriend), family estrangement, closeted MCs , past homophobia from Sawyer's family (his dad caught them together and kicked them out), past biphobia, professional ethics violation (journalist relationship with the people she's writing about), baseball-related injuries, unsafe sex practices (no condom for penetrative sex without discussing STI and pregnancy prevention), on page sex, MMF, DP, voyeurism, public sex, anal play, ableist language
Kathryn Nolan is, simply, a really good writer. She makes a novella-length story about minor league baseball— complete with hot-as-hell MMF spice— feel like joy.
Cash and Sawyer have been playing baseball together since they were 16. They finally get their chance in the major leagues. Darcy is the reporter who believes in them and their unmistakable talent.
Ostensibly romance, and does have a HEA, but is pretty much just the build up to a threesome and then they're in love. Only a short story (87 pages) so that is what I expected, but I would have enjoyed the same story with more background and tension/build-up
High Heat is a tightly constructed novella that demonstrates how much can be achieved within a shorter format when the underlying craft is deliberate. Kathryn Nolan doesn’t rely on premise alone; instead, the narrative is driven by the careful calibration of emotional tension, character vulnerability, and relational dynamics.
What stands out most is the balance. In a story built around a complex MMF relationship, it would be easy for one dynamic to overpower the others, yet the interactions feel measured and intentional. The emotional beats land with clarity, and the pacing allows each character to occupy meaningful space within the narrative rather than functioning as archetypes.
There is also a notable restraint in how tension is handled. Rather than rushing toward payoff, the story allows anticipation and internal conflict to build in a way that feels earned. That choice elevates the novella beyond its length and gives it a sense of narrative completeness that many longer works struggle to achieve.
For readers of contemporary romance—especially those interested in character-driven, emotionally aware storytelling—High Heat delivers a focused and well-executed reading experience.
This quick read is nothing short of awesome! Our king, Kathryn Nolan, hit this one out of the ballpark!!
The FMC, Darcy, is a sports reporter assigned to covering minor league baseball. She witnessed the most amazing pair of players and predicted they would be sent up to the majors. What she didn’t predict was falling in love with the two of them.
Cash and Sawyer have been best friends and teammates since childhood. They are completely in sync with one another and Darcy is assigned to follow them and write their stories. She just didn’t know was how hard they fell for her the day they met.
This is a beautiful polyamory story of pure love and I am so here for it!
Read this hot and steamy novella and thank me later!! It is so delicious and swoon worthy!!
#MMF #Novella #Sports Written in first person from Darcy’s POV, this quick, steamy read is a standalone and ends with a HEA. I love everything this author writes. At times it is truly poetic. I loved how Darcy believes in their baseball ability. I really loved how she is able to see the closeness and unspoken communication ability they have with each other that makes them special on the field. I adored how Cash and Sawyer are together: tender, protective, and hot. Darcy is a lucky girl. I want more of their wonderful relationship.
In this novella our FMC is a sports reporter and her beat is in the Minors for baseball. She is convinced this pair (pitcher and first baseman) are the next big thing and are gonna get the call to the Majors. Our MMCs have been friends since highschool, played together and left their small town together when rumors got to be too much. When they do get the call, she is tapped to spend a month on the road with them to write their story. What she isn't expecting is to realize how deep their bond truly is - and that they all want to take their relationship to the next level.
The title doesn't lie in this spicy novella about two baseball stars who both fall for sports reporter Darcy. Cash and Sawyer are a great couple who have suffered small town homophobia and they are the perfect pair to light up Darcy's life in this ultimately optimistic story.
No question Nolan is a phenomenal writer and can write steam that will practically melt your face off. But, I know too much about baseball and its culture, plus the ethics of journalism, to suspend disbelief as much as needed to rate it higher than a 3. Would definitely have read a full-length book with a more believable story.
Super short and spicy read. Love when everyone loves each other in a poly situation. Definitely lives up to the name in the title! 4/5 for spice with number of scenes, dirty talk, and kink. Love this author and the sweet spicy moments they write about!
This novella was super hot! Darcy is sent to do a story on Cash and Sawyer who just got called up to the majors. She soon finds out that they are in a relationship and things heat up quick!
Kathryn Nolan's "High Heat" is a super steamy MMF novella! Get ready for two charming, hunky baseball players and the reporter they both want. The chemistry is undeniable, the spice is off the charts, and it’s a guaranteed HEA. Perfect for a quick, sexy escape!
Slow burn novella, but when it get to it, its pretty good. Its a sweet story, of 2 guys who find each other and then find someone they can be themselves with.
A sweet and spicy MMF poly romance between two baseball players and the sports reporter following their rise from playing in the minor leagues to the majors.
Cash and Sawyer are a great couple on and off the field, and I loved that even though the story was told from Darcy’s POV we got to see their history and how they fell in love with each other before they met and fell for her. Even though this was a novella it felt like a full story and left me wanting more stories about these three.
