Words Matter

Rate this book
Every day, we are bombarded by words—on social media, on television, on billboards, at work, at school—everywhere. These words vie for our attention, and some may even be interesting. But do they matter?

In Words Matter, Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles invites Latter-day Saints to ponder on the words and principles we prioritize in our lives. Drawing on personal experiences and gospel teachings, he points readers to the words that matter most—the words that will bring us closer to Jesus Christ and to a life in harmony with His teachings.

“Words that testify of Jesus Christ matter,” writes Elder Rasband. “The ‘word of God’ surpasses all other expressions. . . . The words of prophets, words in the temple, words of gospel instruction, words in blessings, words of faith, obedience, righteousness, repentance, forgiveness, and hope; these are words that matter.” Elder Rasband encourages readers to spend more of their time on the messages these words carry and shares how they have shaped his own spiritual journey.

Drowning out the noise of the world by choosing to focus on the things that are truly important is the challenge of a lifetime. But by focusing on the words of the gospel—the words that matter most—Latter-day Saints can create lives of true discipleship, lives marked by spiritual peace and confidence, and lives centered on Jesus Christ.

A really good reminder to put what’s the most important in life, Jesus Christ, first. Also, that the things we say can have a powerful impact and influence on how we think and with the people that surround us. The author is a special witness of Jesus Christ and an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints.

How I love words that trigger a response in my heart and mind! Maybe this is why I was drawn to this phenomenal book. I listened to this as an audiobook but will be purchasing a hard copy because I need time to sit with so many wonderful words and their significance! Some of my personal favorite words are Remember, Become and Holiness. Elder Rasband touched on these and so many more!

I like the premise, but this one fell a little flat to me. Nothing said was incorrect, but the writing felt like it was wandering a bit. Very anecdotal (which isn't bad), but didn't strike the same chord as books by other apostles. Probably great for others, but not for me. Glad I read it though.

"Words that testify of Jesus Christ matter", says the author. This makes me thing of the saying, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me." I don't agree with that saying at all, and I don't think Elder Ronald A. Rasband would, either. The words we say and even think really do matter. A wonderful, inspiring, and thought provoking read.
