A forbidden stepbrother. A morally gray predator. A girl who should have known better than to bleed in shark-infested waters.

Fallon

Frampton University was supposed to be a fresh start — keep my head down, earn my degree, and get out. I wasn't looking for enemies. But I found one anyway, and he happens to be the most dangerous man on campus.

Remington Frampton. The Shark. Heir to the Frampton legacy, king of the pool, and the golden god everyone bows to, except me. The moment I crossed him, I became his next obsession. Now he's not just my enemy.

He's my stepbrother.

Remy

Everyone at Frampton University knows their place—below me. I built this kingdom stroke by stroke, and no one disrupts my current. Until her.

Fallon Monroe walks into my world with defiance written all over her face, and suddenly I can't stop circling. She thinks she can survive me. She has no idea what I'm capable of.

The predator in me doesn't stop at the water's edge.

Now she's living under my roof, sleeping down the hall, and testing every boundary I've set. The dark pull between us should be reason enough to walk away.

But sharks don't walk. They feed.

Backstroke is a dark enemies-to-lovers romance featuring a morally gray hero, a forbidden stepsibling dynamic, and explicit content intended for mature readers. Dive in.

No star rating, because I DNF’ed this about 20% in. I don’t always write reviews for books that I DNF, but I do it when a book has only great reviews, which made me feel misled. At the time that I'm writing this, this book ONLY has "it was amazing!" 5 star reviews, which is misleading.

This is not a horrible book. It might not even be bad, maybe it gets better after 20% in. I'm just not feeling it and I'm bored. It's college bully, and he's a swimmer -- I liked the idea of a hero who is an athlete that's not a hockey player, for once, I'm sick of the hockey trend. And, it's been a while since I've read MF bully, not RH.

All the reviews were like, "this author brings such depth to her characters!!!" No, she doesn't. That’s simply not true. These characters are so regular and surface-level, with nothing special about them. He gets obsessed with her after 1 interaction. I'm not against that if a book writes it in a way that convinces me and draws me in – like, Sovereign did “obsessed after 1 meeting” pretty well, in a way that worked. But here, it's not written in a way where I feel it. It has no depth, no flavor.

Also, there’s a dub con bj scene. I'm not offended by that type of scene being in fiction - I sometimes enjoy it. But it wasn't done well. A scene like that can't just be plopped down with no effort or skill. It needs to dig into the emotions and the psychology of it. If the heroine is just going along and letting him do that, why? How is she feeling about it? What's happening in her mind? Why is he doing that to her, what's happening in his mind? Sam Mariano books are good at digging into that. If she’s fighting back, is it physical, or more psychological, where she’s trying to manipulate the situation to mentally get the upper hand (like the great non con scene at the beginning of Dukes of Ruin)? A dub/non con scene can be interesting, tense, and emotionally complex if the author does it well. It can be fun or hot, if it leans into the hero being deliciously unhinged. None of that applies, here. In this book, it’s just There. It feels like author put it on her “trope checklist." There's no thought put into the scene; it's just checking off a box on a checklist. Maybe I sound ridiculous, waxing poetic about how to write a dub/non con scene. But there IS an artistry and craft to it, and this book doesn't have the juice.

Info dumpy - we already know everyone’s life story in the first 2 chapters. Hero is “intoxicated” by the power he has on campus 🙄

This writing style isn’t for me.

Backstroke had a mixed start for me. Being thrown straight into an 11 year old Fallen flashback had me double checking her age a few times. Maybe I was just an idiot child at that age, but she didn’t read like an 11 year old to me at all.

Unfortunately, I also realised almost immediately that the writing style just isn’t for me.

“The brilliant sun casting its warm glow over the bustling beach” is a good example of what I mean.

The prose felt overly descriptive, with too many unnecessary words in otherwise simple sentences. I can see why others might enjoy it, but it just didn’t work for me personally.

I do love a dark college atmosphere, swim team dynamics, and emotionally damaged characters. Yes that's ticking boxes of what I enjoy. Even more so with the taboo aspects of the step siblings. Love that.

The book definitely delivers on some of the darker romance elements and it does keep the pacing fast throughout.

I personally wanted more depth from both the characters and the plot. Many of the heavier emotional reveals happened very early, which left little room for tension or gradual build-up in the relationship which then just felt underwhelming for me personally.

Overall, Backstroke was a reasonably entertaining and fast-paced dark college romance with plenty of angst and addictive moments. It's just the writing style that was simply not for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Backstroke.

For readers new to Author LB Martin, she has this remarkable talent for delving deeper into people’s emotional responses and their long-lasting effects on challenging situations in all her stories. Their lives are not easy, nor is their path to healing.

In “Backstroke,” Fallon’s challenges are multi-layered, and they come afloat when she attends college and meets Remy. The intense interactions between the two characters are done well. The dark themes start early and are demonstrated in a way that allows enough time to establish the build-up of Fallon and Remy’s romantic relationship. Too often, I’ve read other books where the transition time is not enough, but LB doesn’t do that.

I was completely absorbed reading “Backstroke.” LB writes characters, though fictional, that resonate well with readers, making the story more impactful and enjoyable. I liked it.

I really enjoyed reading this. It took a chapter or so to get into it, but don't let that keep you from reading it. It's worth the read. I like that there was a morally gray hero. we get to see both of Remy's sides. His Pink Psycho side, and his vulnerability side. It really makes this character interesting and believeable.

Of course, it wouldn't be a great book without some angst. That surprise character entrance had me gasping.

But I do feel like something was missing or there was a slight inconsistency. When Emmerson started showing his true colors, Remy realized he had a traitor on the team. But then, in the end, Emmersons partner wasn't even someone at the college. So, who told Emmerson everything about Initiation Night? I find it hard to believe that *not saying names because spoilers* he found all the information out on his own. Also, I felt like Fallon was a little bit too whiny. Especially when she tried to stay away from Remy.

But it was still a great read! And the ending was super cute! I can't wait to read Nix and Gray's story.

WOOOOAH Okay let me gather my pearls because I clutched them babies a little too hard 😏🤭

Fallon is a relatable gal with a wild side and a past that haunts her, insecurities that she carries, and scars that you both can and cannot see throughout.

Remy is a hot, cocky attitude having, arse! But we love him for it.

The dialogue / back and forth banter was laced with poison and I loved it, the transition from tension to sudden obsession new for me and I have to say - I loved it!

Remy's bestie Nix sounds like a stand up guy for the most part and I wanted some more of him even though it's not his story ☺️🤭

Overall (no pun intended) Backstroke was an immersive read with wonderful storytelling and pacing. I need this on my shelf and shooooooooowheeeeeee! That spicy art is going to be so good.

Please be sure to check the content notes from L.B. Martin before you dive in. Backstroke has some of our favourite themes like step-sibs, who hurt you?, OTT/JP MMC, Panic attacks, and more.

This is definitely an easy read to fly through. The spice is great and it’s entertaining.

What starts as a bully romance and is supposed to be enemies to lovers turns into this instalove situation that goes into something else entirely, especially given the timeline of everything.

I struggle with what to rate it. It started off really strong, and then after it’s been like a week (in the book) and they’re professing their love, I was like “eh” and then the last part just takes a total left turn and gets DRAMATIC. I couldn’t suspend my disbelief. My rating has nothing to do with the concepts, but with the way the story unfolds. I did appreciate the writing style.

I’d say this is 2.5-2.75 stars, rounding up.

I did enjoy this book but I felt it was barely a bully book and morphed quickly into obsession and instalove. Pretty much everything could have used a bit more development.

That being said I have preordered the next book freestyle.

Backstroke is the first in the boys of Frampton series an enemies to lovers story.

We get to meet Remy and Fallon in this book Remy is a senior at the college and Fallon is just starting, there first meeting is when Fallon is just heading to her dorm and bumps into Remy to say sparks fly would be an understatement.

The confrontation are heating in both sexual and bullying

Fallon character is written so well you get to see the girl behind the walls she puts up , I loved how her character grew throughout the book

Remy character was as described possessive, and dark wished we saw a bit more of him

Nix and Gray characters intrigued me ,so looking forward to seeing there story.

Huge thank you to the author, netgalley, and booksgosocial for the arc! It is greatly appreciated.

Listen, I am ALWAYS a sucker for stepsibling romances, especially when there's bullying/E2L on top of that and was super hyped to read this. Unfortunately, I just didn't vibe with this like I was hoping.

Hooooooly moly!!!!!! 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

This is on the gray side. If you like the LORDS series this is like a diet Ritual. Minus the secret society and not as much 🍇😬

Remy is the it boy and the university (it’s named after him after all) so he gets whatever he wants. That is until what he wants is the one girl that doesn’t want him. For now.

There are quite a few twists and I was like 🤯🤯🤯 at the end. I really liked this book and I can’t wait to read more like it!

deliciously dark

I throughly enjoyed this book, it was deliciously dark in all the right places.
Loved the obsession, the possessiveness, the control and then there’s her determination not to give in - absolutely brilliant.
The relationship was fascinating, as were their family ties.
Overall a great read.

*SNAP*
I shakingly pull my left hand over my mouth to stifle any noise which I might have let out at the sound just a few feet to my right.

"I can feel you 21 - I know you are hiding here somewhere."

My heart quickens as I see the neon green glow of the Seeker's mask become more visible and I immediately begin to plot my next move…

If I go straight, I'll run into a dead end as that's where the lake starts.
If I go to my left, I'll dive deeper into the forest that I have no idea where I will end up.
If I go to my right I'll find myself up close and personal with my Seeker.
If go backwards, I'll end up back at the beginning where things started.

As I contemplate my decision, another noise happens, closer than where it was before. As I slowly glide my eyes to the right side of me, a hand abruptly reaches toward my right shoulder blade and I find myself sprinting to the left towards the unknown darkened forest - it is my best option after all. Heart beating fast, I pick up my legs to attempt at distancing myself further from my Seeker, in panting breaths, as I didn't control my breathing while picking up my pace. While I may not know where this path goes, it's at least the best shot I have at not being caught, because once I am, my Swim Team Seeker will have me in more ways than one - and I am DEFINITELY not someone who lets anyone get in that easily.

As I dart through the dark, I take one look across my left shoulder just to see the faint glow of the mask that was once right beside me. He tilts his head to the left in a mocking way as if to tell me he will find me and when he does, I can only imagine what happens then.

"You can run - but you can't hide my little spitfire."

Those ten words sent chills down my spine as I continue racing forward.
What in the world have I just gotten myself into?

Those who have fallen victim to the Hide and Seek Swim Team Game, please raise your right hand… because I am right there with you and not even ashamed to say I actually signed up for the damn thing voluntarily. If you are not sure what I am referring to, please refer to the paragraphs below as I introduce you to "The Shark" and Swim Team at Frampton University.

Backstroke is a fast paced Dark Sports Romance set between our FMC Rocker Rebel, Fallon, and our Sports Swim Star MMC, Remington (also known as Remy), who have found themselves caught between a dangerous game of love and hate. After accidentally running into each other on Move In Day at Frampton University, Remy had expected an apology for interfering with the All-Star Swimmer's daily path, but ended up getting a handful of other less apologetic words from Fallon herself stating that he should, rather, watch where he was going next time instead. As with all starting enemies to lovers relationships, Remy found himself taken aback at the response that Fallon had given as he is used to getting what he wants and to no one daring to stand in his way. In fact, he made it his absolute mission that day to destroy Fallon for having no fear in front himself and to others who were watching that day they ran into each other.

While Remy showcases a ruthless competitiveness and dominant predatory exterior, he hides trauma behind that hardened shell and finds himself at ease only when in the safety of water - a safe space, if you will, where he can get away from the world and crushing expectations of holding up the legacy he's worked so hard to build. Unfortunately, while the water is Remy's safe space, that same place is not "safe" to Fallon. She has her own water related trauma causing her to stiffen and panic at the near mention of oceans or pools itself. This was one of the things that Remy had noticed when he was watching her at the party event that Fallon attended with her new roommates and has come to find also during the Swim Team Initiation Ceremony where the annual Hide and Seek Event comes into play. Fortunately for Remy, Fallon's roommates have signed her up for the Hide & Seek Event allowing him to immediately assign her number as the one he will be seeking. Unfortunately, this also means that Remy has to deal with these growing feelings he is starting to recognize and the blur between hate and love starts to make things a little more complicated in the "situation-ship" that both Remy and Fallon have found themselves falling into.

Sounds like a pretty good storyline, right?
I agree…it even contains many of the tropes which the Dark Romance Community finds as favorites along the way as well….

🏊‍♀️Bully Romance
🏊‍♀️Enemies To Lovers
🏊‍♀️Forced Proximity
🏊‍♀️College Sports
🏊‍♀️Trauma Bonding
🏊‍♀️Feisty FMC x Morally Gray MMC
🏊‍♀️Revenge Plot

While these are only a few of the tropes you'll come across while reading this journey of Remington and Fallon, you will come to find many more surprises and intrigue along the way when you pick this up on JUNE 02, 2026.

During my read through, I enjoyed how fast paced the book had kept the reader where there didn't feel like any slowness or just "filler" that some books provide when they reach the goal of moving past the "enemies" portion to now seeing each other as "lovers". This will always be something I praise authors on as while I am a true lover of slow burn romances, there comes a point and time where that slowness is just "filler" and unnecessary to keep a page count up for a book publishing requirement. In this case, the author kept up with speed consistently and everything felt like there was a purpose as we moved through the storyline. I would caution that around 80% into the book, however, that the speed may have went a little too fast for me towards the end. Loose ends were wrapping up as expected, the surprise drama was enfolding, and of course the relationships were blooming, but there were areas where I felt I couldn't connect the dots on how something had occurred. It was kind of that like meme where you have that woman with all scientific calculations floating around her….I was that person when I got to that portion of the book so I would keep that in mind as you go through your adventure.

From a relationship perspective, I felt like the relationship between the two MCs didn't feel as much as an "in depth" connection as I wanted them to have. There were moments where you see the turmoil of Remy trying to understand why he would feel or do things in a certain way as he develops these thoughts toward Fallon but I didn't see that growth of him wanting to change much even when he starts to recognize what he is doing and feeling on his end. I do understand from the point of view that Remington was brought up to force him into standing from an entitlement position and having control issues, but I wanted to see him start to waver and prove a little more to Fallon he was meant for so much more in her life. I also wanted to see more effort put involved from Fallon's side as well - at times (more so most of the time) she wanted to put a bad spin on Remy often but wouldn't take a look at herself and take control of the situation and feelings either. Granted, Dark Romances are always a hit or miss with the "in depth connection" between the two characters so it really depends on how you come into reading the Dark Romance book from your end. Are you here for the vibes? Enjoy your ride. Are you here from the emotional connection between two characters that grow into a blossoming relationship? This might not be what you expect. What I will say is that I did enjoy my read through and finished it in a day so it definitely kept my interest. I just thought I'd put in a note to let those who are interested to know that this book is more so just for vibes and a good time…and if that's what you are looking for, definitely indulge!

Overall, Backstroke is a newer take on the Dark Sports Romance that feels refreshing from the consistent Hockey related romances taking over the book community. I appreciate the author's ability to captivate an audience and keep them intrigued as I found myself doing just that when reading through. If you are looking for a new Sports Romance to add to your TBR that brings the joys and delicious adventure as Dark Romances bring, definitely save this a spot for when it comes out this JUNE 2026.

NOTE: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

2.5 stars rounded down. I was intrigued by the premise as swimming is rarely the focus of a sports romance and I swam competitively when younger, but…
Firstly, this was quite short and feels rushed.
The MCs were likeable and I liked Fallon & Remy together, but the enemies-to-lovers stage was brief, bordering on instalove. As such, we didn’t get the chance to see their relationship grow, and the MCs are never fully realised (they were just one way one minute, then a fully together couple the next). There was a bit of suspense and sub plot, but again, this was rushed and a bit nonsensical (eg. how on earth did Emerson meet F’s Dad? How did the Dad escape prison??).
There were just too many tangents left underdeveloped and not in a good ‘oh I can’t wait for the next book to address these’ way. Rather, it started to feel like the author had included them just to tick off another trope on a marketing checklist. Whether the poor parent/child relationships, the stepsibling issue (‘I fell in love with my stepbrother’ = umm, no, you fell in love with a guy who later became your stepbrother); the elite sports training/mentality and team dynamics that were touched on in the first third then suddenly disappeared, etc etc… and how the parents’ decision to marry without letting either’s family know… so much that could have been expanded and developed into a richer story, but was just dropped and another sex scene thrown in instead.
The earliest spice scenes between the FMC & MMC were also blurry in terms of dubcon/NC.
Oh and here’s a PSA: if ever someone needs CPR, and/or has drowned, don’t just hang out with them - they need a hospital ED, immediately (there’s a little thing called secondary drowning, especially, to worry about).
On a similar note, if someone is losing consciousness from blood loss from a stab wound (and only a few pages later, described as being in & out of consciousness for a few days & hospitalised for that very reason), having rough sex in a pool of blood is not hot & sexy, but life threatening.
Also, the MMC saying ‘you’re on the shot’ is not a discussion of safe sex!
Lastly, there were a few misspelled and missing words (better proofreading required).
Conflicted as to whether I’ll give the next book a chance when it comes out… I’m intrigued by the MCs but don’t want to be let down again… hopefully it’ll have a good editor…

TALK ABOUT OBSESSED - Also, why are most of the men with Daddy issues named Remington (Remy)?? Haha

THIS BOOK WILL NOT BE FOR EVERYONE AND THAT’S OKAY. But don’t sh*t on the author’s work because YOU elected to ignore their warnings.

This is a dark academia (university), M/F, fast-burn with an obsessive/possessive MMC and an FMC who has dealt with her more than fair share of trauma.

Remington Frampton is the campus god at Frampton University (can you guess why? *wink*) who also happens to be the cliché playboy. He’s a one and done kind of guy. Until he bumps into Fallon Monroe (literally), who has blue hair, piercings galore and has more black in her wardrobe more than any other color.

Each have their own Daddy issues to deal with but only one of them truly has some trauma to overcome.

I LOVE how Remy becomes obsessed at first sight. This man is not for everyone but damn I love an MMC that decides immediately on their FMC and then does his absolute worst to make sure she understands his level of obsession.

I’ll be honest, I’m on the fence about Fallon which is why my rating isn’t much higher. She’s described as feisty but eh, I beg to differ. She’s more… non-compliant. I understand she went through a couple of life-altering events and that would change anyone but I feel like Fallon has no personality.

We just get these little bits of insight; enough to propel the story but not enough to give the characters the range and depth needed to feel emotionally invested in. But I suppose that’s what is sacrificed with a fast-burn.

There is plenty of spice but nothing too out of the ordinary. Remy’s best feature is his mouth and all his dirty talk. My only irk was the way Fallon lost her virginity. I know this is a work of fiction but it should at least be somewhat realistic for a first time of penetration with a penis (just saying haha…).

Also, FYI there isn’t much swimming going on for being marketed as a sport-adjacent romance.

I applied to receive an advanced reader’s copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

ARC review for Backstroke by LB Martin

Thanks to LB for the ARC opportunity!

Featured tropes: bully/enemies to lovers, virgin FMC, touch her and die, obsessed MMC, masked men, step siblings

Trigger warning: past parental abuse/alcoholic parent, fear of bodies of water, PTSD/anxiety, dub-con, kidnapping, on-page murder

Review: 4/5

Friends. This book had me hooked from, if we're being honest, the content warnings before the book even started! Let's dive in.

Things I liked:
- Would I ever want to actually be with a guy like Remy? Hell no. Was he just the most delicious thing to read about? Hell yes. Remy is a Grade A asshole to, well, pretty much everyone. He always gets what he wants and in Backstroke, he wants our FMC, Fallon.
- I loved Fallon and her ability to instinctively know what buttons to push to piss Remy off. I enjoyed that the way her past molded her into the woman she is now led to her giving no effs. Where everyone else would have been scared of Remy, Fallon poked the bear with no hesitation (which often led to some spicy spicy times)! Remy needed to be taken down a peg or two and Fallon delivers.
- For a bully romance, there were some great moments of banter and sarcastic remarks that had me laughing out loud. I love me a good witty game of verbal tennis.

Things I disliked or missed the mark:
- I would have liked to see the bully/enemies part of the book be extended a bit. Remy was obsessed with Fallon from the moment they ran into each other (literally) for the first time. She told him off and he declared her his new mark. Like, they really hated each other. And I loved it. And then it was legit like a switch flipped and he realized he was instead in love with her. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that part of an enemies to lovers story too but I think this could have done with a little more build up. Or even just an added scene where someone tries to hit on Fallon or something and Remy goes off. I don't know. Just a little more something on the enemies side of the story would have felt more complete to me.
- We learn a lot about Fallon and her background which really helps us understand her character. I would have loved to see something similar for Remy. Yeah, we know he's Frampton U royalty and that he doesn't get along with his father. But that's about it. A little more insight into Remy's history I think would have been great to connect with his character a little more.
- I had a hard time grasping the passage of time in the book. It wasn't a big deal but I think that was part of what contributed to feeling like we went from hate to love so fast, because I couldn't necessarily grasp how far removed we were from the beginning of the school year which is where the book starts. It didn't make pacing feel off so that's bonus, just left me wondering "when are we?"

Overall, I loved enrolling at Frampton U. Sometimes you just need a dark, gritty story and this one fit that bill. It wasn't the darkest romance I've read but it still scratched that spooky season itch and it was a quick read. I will 100% be reading the next installment because I am chomping at the bit for Nix and Gray's story. I love me a good trio and I'm sure these two Frampton U boys will deliver!

This was the first book I have read by this author, and I was definitely impressed by her writing. I love a dark romance with a morally grey MMC. Although they make me beyond angry, I actually enjoy a good bully romance. On top of all of that, I love a sports romance, especially when we get a new sport to read, like swimming in this book. Also, having been a competitive swimmer, I felt an unfortunate connection to it ( I have some serious bad memories of my time as a swimmer). But that aside, I thought that this book did a good job of creating a dark bully romance that was entertaining and engaging. I thought that the characters were relatable and I was actually interested to see where their story went.

I think that I really loved Fallon as a FMC. I always appreciate a strong willed female main character that can stand up for herself against her bully. She doesn’t cave just because Remy is the all powerful king of the swim team. It’s always good to see a FMC that is able to have banter with someone that always gets what he wants. Her past has molded her into the strong willed female that she is instead of breaking her. I love a strong woman and that’s what Fallon is.

Remy. Oh Remy. I have known people like Remy. Someone who is used to getting what he wants. Would he have been so obsessed if Fallon was another to give him what he wants? Probably not. Like many morally grey MMCs, his obsession drives him and while I would never want to encounter him in my actual life, he has all of the wonderful characteristics that I look for in a dark romance/bully romance MMC.

Backstroke was the first in the series and I am interested to see what the rest of the series holds. I love a university romance, and this was one has some lovely spice for those looking for it. It was definitely a book worth reading and one that has caught my attention so that I will be sure to be back for the next book in the series.

ARC review
A rather simple story of rich angry jock meets awkward emo girl who changes his ways. I was very up and down with this book. A pretty nice meet-cute, followed by just a rotten jerk of a human being as our main male character, add in some trauma, panic attacks, daddy issues, rich boy arrogance and you have the first 60% of the story. There are some really good descriptions of anxiety, ptsd, and self loathing to cope with mental strain.
Our spice level is at about a 2 out of 5, with scenes that can trigger some (forced play, dominance, spanking), but nothing intense or extremely graphic. Very appropriate with the growth of the relationship. One thing I COULD NOT stand is the authors constant use of “slam”. I feel like if you’re an author, you should have the ability to switch it up a bit and not use the same word constantly. Everything was “he slammed his mouth into her” “he slammed her up against”. “He slammed his / slammed on/ slammed in”. It got to the point of rolling my eyes. I mean. Just use a different word
Our emotional change in our leads comes on rather quickly and fully. There is not really a build up, just a sudden “I’ve been a playboy my whole life now I’m ready to marry you”. The moods gave me whiplash
Some of the love story was really nice, but a lot of it was forced, demanding, and rude.
It appears there will be a part 2, which I would read to see how we evolve, and hopefully the author learns new words other than “slam “. May I suggest collide? Connect? Come together with force? Anything but slam!

This book was a fascinating dark college romance, and it grabbed my attention right from the start due to its great setting and morally gray hero. It kept me intrigued because there were many times when the chemistry between Fallon and Remy just seemed amazing.
Love me some enemies-to-lovers action!

However, the pacing of the novel seemed uneven at times, both Remy's and Fallon's emotions came off as exaggerated. Many events went on and on for far too long, particularly towards the ending when they were alone in Remy's room going from mad at one another to happy to mad to happy to mad. It just felt quite repetitive despite all the good tension between them.

I also wished there had been more depth to the characters and their relationships. I wanted to know more of how their parents got together, wanted to know more about Fallon's roommates but I didn't get those kinds of details

Overall, this book was enjoyable to read even though I wish it was longer. It was a good dark romance, filled with possession, some taboo, and overall a good atmosphere!

Grateful for the opportunity to have read this! 🩷

For an author who claims to be at her starting mark, beginning to dip her toes into the colder and darker waters of storytelling with The Boys of Frampton University, L.b. Martin seems to have caught the wave of comfort quickly and can hold her own with the pros without having to paddle very hard.
Who knew swimmers were so damn domineering and so well versed in ALL their abilities. 🥵
I’ve been told swimming takes the utmost concentration and superior perseverance to be great—I guess that applies to perfecting their bedroom skills as well—because let me tell you, the pool isn’t the only thing warm and wet right now.
Although I suppose when you’re forced to date a swimmer with lungs used to holding air in for extended periods of time, and a mouth focused purely on the finish line, wearing dry pan-tees are obsolete anytime of day, since you’ll by soaked before they exhale. 😮‍💨

Like when I read Backstroke… poof… somehow all my dry pan-tees are not so dry. Every chapter had me crossing my legs for relief. The same relief Fallon tries for- but is denied 😳 because Remy won’t let her touch HIS 🐈 without his permission. Whelp, there goes another dry pair just thinking about the way he “pun/ish/es” her when she does defy him, or try to at least.
Ooo, what I wouldn’t give for one of his puni/shmen/ts right about now.

Dark Romance, Obssession, Stepbrother, College, Sports, past abuse / traumatic events, some possible triggers for readers. Remy has been through several traumatic events in her past. She gets a scholarship and starts college looking forward to life on her terms. Remy, captain of the swim team, is the typical playboy with a hard family life. Until he meets Fallon. He quickly becomes obsessed. They both have strong personalities and clash from the moment they meet. But that only heightens the sexual tension between them. Remy is possessive to the extreme when it comes to Fallon. I thought his character might be a little darker. In the end they brought out the best in each other. It took time to get there. I liked the story. Swimming is not a regular sports romance. It made this book more unique than other dark romances. Fallon stayed true to her personality for the most part. She gave in to Remy at points, but on her terms. I would definitely recommend giving this book a read after you consider the possible triggers.

Backstroke is the first book in the Boys of Frampton University series. If you like a dark story, college age, a bully that is OTT with his obsession and a swim team romance then go grab this book.
TW: mental illness in the form of Thalassophobia (the persistent and intense fear of deep bodies of water), PTSD, anxiety attacks, domestic abuse, non/dubious consent, masked men, BDSM, breath play, forced orgasms, orgasm denial, rope play, knife play, blood play, primal play, ice play, anal, and spankings.

Remington Frampton is a senior and the King of the campus and swim team. He sets high on his throne and is used to the girls submitting to him. But gets knocked down a notch by a blue hair emo when she refuses to adore him and gives him attitude.

Fallon is a freshman and just wants to focus on her studies but Remy keeps showing up and bullying her. She stands her ground and the more she fights him the more he becomes obsessed.

Remy has a bad reputation and doesn't know what love is but his obsession with Fallon has taken over his life and he knows he can't be without her.

Fallon and Remy are trying to get past his intensity but then a couple someone's try to get their revenge with one stone, two birds...

Fallon and Remy, I love their story! The enemies' cat and mouse games were so much fun to read, and when they finally gave into their feelings, it was beautiful! We get lots of spicy scenes and a story you can't put down! I loved that they supported each other and made each other stronger.

I can't wait for the next book in Frampton University series!

Backstroke is beautifully and darkly written. L.B. Martin is an incredible writer and I loved being able to fully immerse myself into her storytelling. With that being said, I DID NOT want to put this book down and actually called my boss to tell her I would be late coming into work.

The MMC, Remy is exactly how toxically obsessed I want my man to be with me. 🥵🥵

Remy and Fallon's chemistry is to die for. A strong and determined fmc who works fiercely against falling under the MMCs spell but he just does things to her that she just can't fight. 😈😈😈 EXACTLY how I love my bully romances.

Oh and the added bonus that they ended up falling into my favorite taboo category 👀.

If you love bully romances with a dash of taboo you aren't going to want to miss this book!

DNF @ 46% (mostly skimmed)

I can put up with a lot of bad writing but outside of the writing style, the plot and story is nonsensical. The most threatening boys on campus is the swim team? They have their own frat house? It’s an all-boys swim team and there’s no women? It’s like the author wanted to make a dark romance around a frat boy but to change it up, introduced the swim team aspect. But it doesn’t work for me at all.

The author also seems to forget there are coaches and they just appear and disappear from the story when convenient because it’s like the MMC is their coach at times.

Even by 46%, the story hasn’t even introduced the plot mentioned in the blurb that their parents got married and they’re now step siblings. I didn’t realize it would be so weird when that isn’t introduced at the start of the book and now the author has waited too long.

Oh. My. God. I loved this book. It was really interesting that it was a swim team and not another sport. I definitely think this is a book you should fly into blind so I’ll refrain from spoilers.

Fallon has solidified a spot as one of my favourite FMCs of the year. She’s smart and strong and everything I love to see in an FMC.

Remy is amazing but I do wish there’d have been a more subtle transition from cat and mouse to possessive love/obsession.

I think the book would have benefited from a little more world building with the team/friends and of the climax/danger but overall SOLID read. It’s going back on my re read list for sure.
