What a great ride! i really enjoyed it and it really feels like a Dungeons and Dragons kind of story! Or when you're a gamer you will probably feel the same feeling of recognition. The "levelling up" , learning new things, dungeons. But don't worry, you don't have to be a gamer or a DnD fan to enjoy this story and the way it is told!

I love how it is focussed on friendship, overcoming hardships together and of course trying to save the world. It really is an "old fashioned" fantasy story! And I mean that in the best way possible. It really feels refreshing and you don't have to be a YA to enjoy this ;)

We still follow our 4 heroes on their journey in a whole new world. I love how more of the underlying story is divulged here; like there is a bigger story here than "we have to kill monsters" and I cannot wait to see where it takes us in the next book.

Sometimes the book leans a bit more towards the telling instead of the showing part, but it didn't bother me that much. Also the beginning is a bit slower than the rest of the book, but stick with it, because it is worth it.

Can't wait for the next book 🤭

Thank you Brady for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC and again, for using my name in this story. 🩷

4.5/5 ❤️

This story is an exciting adventure that picks up shortly after where Depths of Vanalf (book 1) ends. It's a high fantasy novel marketed to fans of D&D, with its diverse cast of characters essentially leveling up their abilities and scavenging helpful trinkets to take on bigger challenges and fight even crazier monsters.

Since we already have good background on the characters from the first book, I was happy to be able to jump right into the plot. I love the big focus on the "team" aspect throughout the story, that no one member of the team is all powerful and that they need each other and their unique abilities to accomplish their goals. It was also great to get a little better peek into certain characters' backgrounds and motivations. The book starts a bit slow but picks up exponentially as the story moves forward.

💕: romance mentioned, but not a main theme
⚠️: battle violence and death; powers and magical abilities

Oh my nerdy, fantasy loving heart! This book was so great. It's the perfect mix of epic fantasy meets D&D, just like book one. It's like the characters have gained a level and are using it to their advantage with new spells and knowledge, not to mention stronger monsters.
Hunsaker is really good at sprinkling in things for the future without frustrating readers too much. He also adds a dash of romance, mystery, and moments that have you stressed for the characters and their survival with plenty of moments where they're just on fun adventures! Can't wait for book 3, he has definitely left enough breadcrumbs that I'm excited for the next book without feeling like I'm dangling off a cliff and stressed for the characters.

What a wild ride!

Brady likes to advertise these books as having 'D&D vibes', and this one definitely lives up to that promise, as our party of heroes move on to new places, with new adventures and new monsters!

The pacing is great, the stakes are high, and the lore is immaculate *chef's kiss*

Also, there may or may not be a floofy companion in the mix...

Super fun read. Second book with more abilities and powers. It’s more like a 4.25 for me I’d say. Only because I wanted more!! The ending was super ominous! Excited for the next one!

Loved the book! Was a bit of a slower pace in the beginning and there were a couple of spelling mistakes hence the 4 stars.

The big end fight was a bit deflating with how they "overcame" the monster. I do like how this world is expanding though and the characters are growing!

i can safely say that all i remember are the names of the characters and the fact that there are squiggly creatures and monsters they're constantly battling.
Exhausting and boring in several places

Editing to add, I received an advanced copy from the author, but also purchased my own copy.

What do you mean I have to wait til September for the next one?!

For real, amazing. Loved it! I definitely got about 30-40% of the way through and was like… uhhhh…. Everything I thought would happen has already happened! How do we have so much more book??

Plot twists, giddy feelings, worry for characters safety, all of it. So good. I truly enjoyed the first one, but watching the world grow more complex and learn more about the history? Priceless.

If you love fantasy and monster hunting, these are for you!

Thank you to Brady Hunsaker and his team for allowing me to be part of the ARC readers.

I said it about the first book in the Grimnir Chronicles, and I'll say it again: this is the fantasy series for young teenage boys. That's not to say you won't enjoy it as an adult, you probably will, but if you want to get your 12 year old into fantasy, this is a good place to start. There is action, there are consequences, and there is a semblance of romance, but it never gets to graphic.

We follow our four main characters (Hallik, Bjorn, Elowyn and Lorelai) onto their next adventure, this time on Kelig. Kelig is very different from Askvild, as are it's people. Monsters roam here freely, and humanity is scattered. I won't spoil anything, but it's safe to say we meet a new cast of supporting characters who advance our hero's journey.

Lind and Selke from the previous installment are also back, and play a more important role. And might I smell some romance in their future?

As for pacing and writing style? This book feels like a Dungeons and Dragon's campaign, down to the magic items and the spells learned. Trials cause our heroes to 'level up', and the same 'starting class' can change to different 'subclasses'. If you've ever played an RPG the system is easy to follow. The pacing was not my favorite part of the book, especially in the beginning. It was clear Hunsaker had an idea on where to go, but to get the characters there felt a little off to me.

In the previous book I had some issues with the editing, and the repetition of phrases, but not so in this one. It's much more polished!

Now, there are two reasons why this isn't a five star read for me. First, some things just felt a little too easy, especially at the start of the book. This improved later on, but the opening chapters do set the tone and may make people put the book down. Just know, if this is what bothers you, it's worth reading on.

The second this is the dialogue. To me, this is the weakest part of the book, and I hope it's something that Hunsaker improves at in the next one (which I am sure he will, consedering the leap in quality between this one and the previous one). It felt a little stilted to me, a lot of telling rather than it feeling organic. For some characters, such as Bjorn, this did not bother me to much. But for characters like Lorelai (who was an ambassador and should be good with people) and Elowyn (who is portrayed as quite empathic) it did.

P.S. The art is insanely good!

Great world-building and stakes, but pacing and terminology issues hold it back.

This entry does a fantastic job expanding the scope of the world. I loved diving deeper into the lore and the origins of the magic system—discovering everything right alongside the characters really pulls you into the story. The author also nails the moral ambiguity here; the symbiotic relationship between certain villages and their local alpha monster to maintain the status quo was a brilliant touch.

Seeing the main cast actually struggle and lose a fight was a much-needed reality check after things started feeling too easy. Furthermore, the dungeon power-up system is enticing because raw strength doesn't instantly make someone overpowered—mastery over skills still matters most. However, using the term "tiers" to describe the power-ups Grimnirs obtain inside the dungeons felt a bit immersion-breaking. While it’s easy for the reader to understand, it feels too video-gamey and out of place for a high-fantasy world.

A few other areas held the book back for me:

Character Disparity: The male characters are well-constructed with clear arcs, but the women feel flat. Without a fresh re-read of Book 1, it’s hard to differentiate them outside of their combat abilities.

The Elsa Subplot: Elsa’s arc felt rushed. Writing her into a village leadership role meant she lacked screen time with Hallik, making their kiss and the resolution of her story feel unearned. Elowyn’s subsequent commentary also felt strangely like 21st-century gossip, which broke immersion.

World-Building Inconsistencies: Passing through Vanalf was built up in Book 1 as a lethal trial requiring intense preparation. Here, untrained villagers casually walk through, kill monsters, and grab power-ups. It feels like a forced shortcut to serve future plot points at the expense of established rules.

Final Thoughts:

It feels like the author is prioritizing keeping these books short and fast-paced, but it’s starting to cause cracks in character development, dialogue, and internal logic. The original premise and lore have massive potential, so I really hope the next entry takes its time and tightens up these details!

Avskild has had its world changed. They now know that there are humans in other areas and they now have Voyagers to open portals. Deciding to help Kelig, Bjorn's home, the 4 heroes travel through the portal with others to establish a new city and unite the people there. They also need to cleanse the obelisk associated with the portal so that no more monsters can come through it. While they are in Kelig, they discover there are more trials that can give them extra abilities as Grimnirs and the group must now face those as well.
Hallik, Bjorn, Lorelei and Elowyn are all wonderful characters. They all have distinct personalities but work very well together. Bjorn has always preferred being alone (and we learn why in this book), but now he is coming around to being part of this team. They are definitely a strong unit and have earned the nickname the Pathfinders. In such a relatively short amount of time they have become a well-oiled machine that knows each other's strengths and weaknesses. They are all brave and willing to help all the people in Kelig. We also see Lind rise up to the challenge of leadership in Avskild with Selke as an advisor of sorts.
This is another book packed full of action and monsters. Every time you think they are going to get a minute of rest, there is something new coming after them. Once again, I loved all the different types of monsters. There were some I had heard of but so many new and terrifying monsters. I have not read much from the progressive fantasy genre, but this seems like it fits in with that genre. There is a definite leveling up with a certain way to do that. It will be interesting to see how the characters find the rest of these caves that seem to be testing their strength and to see how they each will fare as well. There were some reveals about the past and the forces that are against the humans and he ending was definitely a big surprise for a couple of characters.

Shadows of Kelig was an excellent follow-up to Depths of Vanalf and a clear improvement in nearly every area. The writing felt tighter, the action scenes were fantastic, the world felt much larger, and the stakes were significantly higher this time around. Brady Hunsaker continues to do a great job balancing lore, mystery, and momentum without ever letting the story feel bogged down.

One of my favorite aspects of this series is following the Pathfinders as they slowly uncover truths about their world. The discovery and exploration elements are incredibly engaging, and it makes the reader feel like they are learning alongside the characters. Every new revelation expands the scope of the story in exciting ways.

The action sequences were another major highlight. Hunsaker writes combat extremely well — the scenes are easy to follow, impactful, and consistently exciting without becoming overly long or repetitive.

I also greatly appreciate how clean the series is compared to much of modern fantasy. The language and sensitive content are handled very well, and this is a series I would feel comfortable recommending to readers of almost any age.

My only real criticism involves one particular subplot surrounding a character wrestling with becoming king. The internal struggle and buildup were compelling, but I was disappointed that the actual “passing of the torch” largely happened off-page. After spending so much time with that arc, I wanted to experience that defining moment directly rather than hear about it afterward.

That said, the ending was excellent. Unlike the first book, which felt fairly self-contained, this one leaves several major hooks for the future of the series. I am fully invested now and cannot wait for Book 3.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, and here is my review: This book is EPIC.

Shadows of Kelig was a beautifully written continuation of our heroes from Depths of Vanalf. If you read book 1, you already know that Hallik and his friends failed to save their world. Now we follow them as they fail to save others! Humanity is doomed and the author has a sick and twisted way of making these heroes suffer! This isn't your typical hero narrative, and I'm here for it.

Some of the characters undergo so much emotion and growth I sometimes forgot I didn't personally know these characters as real people. I was so invested in what happened next, rooting for my favorite characters and placing bets on who wouldn't make it, (Ortso is my favorite, right after Bjorn). Reading this fantasy novel made me want to grab a character sheet and start a D&D campaign. The monsters in this one were FUN!

The universe in which the Grimnir Chronicles take place is so expansive that my mind is reeling with all the possibilities yet to come in book #3. If you haven't read book 1 yet, don't wait. If you have, then you should absolutely be invested in book #2, which I think was even better than book #1!

I almost forgot to mention the ART! This book is filled with absolutely STUNNING character art that is a must see! Even if you use the book as a picture book instead of reading it. (Something to make the book enticing to all ages!) The one from chapter 44 was my favorite.

Just under 5 stars, probably 4.7 or 4.8 for me

Thanks to Brady for giving me an ARC copy to read, I throughly enjoyed this book, having read the first volume in a little over 4 days to enable me to try and finish this one in time for launch day, I am fully emersed in the world of The Grimnir Chronicles, so let me say this, Life is not easy for our band of hero's, but to help that the band is growing, I won't spoil the surprise

Yes this book is written as YA, with very little romance, it's Portal/progression/Lit/RPG fantasy but it's also epic fantasy that I believe most adult readers of fantasy should try and will probably enjoy

I have to admit I was a bit surprised with this story as our heros, Hallik, Loreli, Elowyn and the delightfully named Jaysen Bjorn (you either get it or you don't) seemed to accomplish the main aim of the story by about halfway through the book and I was wondering where things were headed, but Brady manages to keep the suspense and the story going along at a rattling good pace, and it's a nice change that this story is not just a case of the hero's meet the villains (monsters), the hero's beat the villians and move on, there are some real impacts from some of their encounters, with the final one really bringing that aspect right to the fore

I really think book 2 is a serious step forward in both the story telling, and the world building, which is starting to deepen as we go deeper into the history and lore of the world, I am not sure how I will manage to wait until the next volume comes out

This book had the opposite problem to the first. There’s a lot more lore and explanation, but the plot kind of suffers for it. It felt like a video game where you’ve reached the boss but you’re too weak, so you have to go back and do all the side quests to gain enough XP to finally move forward. Still entertaining, but a lot of side quests, smaller bosses, and somewhat forced explanations of the lore.

I feel like the first two books could’ve been one really amazing book if their stories were woven together differently. Each fills the gaps the other leaves, and having that balance throughout would’ve made both the story and the world more interesting.

The ending was my biggest issue. There’s barely any buildup to the climax—it just happens, and the action scene itself was really disappointing. After spending so much time on everything else, the part we were supposed to be working toward felt rushed.

It does set things up really well for the next book coming out in October, which I’ll definitely read. Still a good book, but so much of it felt like completing side quests before being allowed to advance the actual story.

Omg what a read! Aka here we go!

The land of Avskild that we are introduced to in book 1, THE DEPTHS OF VANALF, is not the Avskild we get to know in book 2 (you have to read book 1 for this part to make sense 😉)
The people are strong, and our heroes are ready, or at least they think they are. Brady kinda throws everything, and the kitchen sink at them in this book, but between you and me- that's what makes it so great!

Our formerly rag-tag team whips into shape and rolls with the punches, literally and metaphorically, all while delivering the reader the ultimate D&D immersion in novel form.

Every time I review one of Brady's books, I think this new one is the best yet, and subsequently my favorite! I cannot wait for ya'll to read my new favorite and join me in the Grimnir Chronicles! In the meantime, check out Brady's tagged account and read book 1, if you haven't already!

What an adventure!

The story started off a little slow but once the team began their travels, definitely picked up. I really enjoyed Bjorn’s POV and wished there were more of it. He really is a man shrouded in mystery and I’m sure he’s got tales to tell, being a monster hunter. The ending was super ominous and cliff hanger-y, which creates a great set up for book 3. I also hope there will be more information provided of the other story lines as well, perhaps even having all of them come together towards the end of their journey.

Book is told with multiple POVs, reads a tad formulaic/robotically, and seems to be geared toward a younger audience (author’s intention is to write a story appropriate for all audiences).

Books must be read in order to follow the storyline without being totally lost about why the characters are doing what they’re doing.

I can’t wait for book 3!

The plot felt like the following:

The crew fights a monster that’s more powerful then them, Elowyn realizes they’re not immortal and they almost die, they get helped last second and survive.

They travel to a new place, fight a monster, Lorelai realizes they’re not immortal and they almost die, they get bailed out.

They travel somewhere else, fight a powerful monster, Jaysen Bjorn (Really…Jason Bourne?!?) realizes that they aren’t immortal and they almost die but get bailed out.

They finally travel to the location that was their prime objective, face an incredible powerful monster and are bailed out by someone else and Hallik FINALLY realizes that they aren’t immortal after nearly dying.

Then Lind talked to a monster and realized they aren’t immortal.😂

This was actually a really good book, I enjoyed it a lot. Just a tad repitious

I very much enjoyed the first book but this is huge step up in story telling and world building. The action is nonstop and the different monsters really builds the world out more and I'm very excited to see what other parts there are to this world.
I really liked how the characters have grown in this book, not only with learning more about their abilities and evolving but their growth to work as a team and have hope in such a hopeless world.
Overall 4 stars, a big step up (even though I thoroughly enjoyed book 1) and can't wait for book 3 with that little teaser at the end!!

Thank you to the Author Brady Hunsaker for the ARC review.

Decent foray into book two for a new author. I sometimes don't like reviewing books until the series is completed because some of my detractions may get corrected later on. I find the series and the world interesting and will be continuing the series.

A nice take on portal fantasy with a progression flair. I just wish the character growth was a little more flushed out, especially with the core 4. A lot happens and it's appears to affect them and then its really not addressed again (cough, cough feathers) even though there a minor time jumps for feels to grow, fester, and twist.

This was such an awesome read! I love the pacing and the progression and most of all, the Dungeons and Dragons feel of the story! I need a magic portal to open up and take me to this world. This is perfect for readers who want a fast paced DnD feel to the story and I know this would get younger readers into fantasy. I truly can’t wait for the next installment!

I received an ARC of this book. Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left us.

If you’ve wondered what would happen when the realm of men becomes a monsters play ground here you go. This story follows several characters as they navigate earning magic to enhance their chances of survival. The trick is learning how to use your abilities while fighting for your life.

Now to wait for book 3…

I received an ARC copy of Shadows of Kelig, and Book 2 definitely raises the stakes as we rejoin the original team on a new adventure.

I loved getting to explore more of the world, dive into Jaysen Bjorn’s home and past, and, of course, see the characters continue to grow and evolve.

Brady never disappoints me, and this one was no different.

Another 5-star read from me!

Just finished Shadows of Kelig by Brady Hunsaker.

I’ll admit, the beginning felt a little slow for me, mostly because of the longer chapters. But once the story got going, it never let up. Hunsaker’s storytelling pulled me completely into the world, and I found it hard to put the book down.

Despite the slow start, this is an easy (5/5). Well written, immersive, and absolutely worth the ride.

I really liked part 2! The world feels massive and the scope is widening gradually. I read Brady wants to make this series 6-7 books long. This can be a recipe for a great story.

I have seen feedback from other readers that the book is obvious or over explains certain aspects but I do not notice this or it does not bother me.

I cannot wait for part 3.

Much better than the first book. A bit more character development and a lot fewer simple coincidences/developments to push the narrative. All in all the world and lore building is expanded well. Sometimes explaining the same information over again. But it's is an easy read for someone not looking for something super dark or deep.
