This is a beautiful collection of essays about Kansas, but you don’t need to be from Kansas to relate to and find yourself immersed in Jenna’s Kansas. It’s relatable and real, whether you grew up near a wheat field or can only imagine what one looks like through her beautiful descriptions. Her essays remind you to pay attention to your own place in this world, and the beauty that surrounds you.

This is an incredibly captivating and beautifully written memoir. Brack writes with a rare combination of raw honesty and emotional openness, yet the book never feels heavy or difficult to read. Instead, it carries a quiet lightness that makes even its most reflective moments feel approachable.

As a fellow Midwesterner, I found myself deeply connected to the themes she explores, but you don’t need that shared background to feel the pull of this story. Anyone who has ever thought about where they come from will recognize the layered, often complicated emotions tied to a hometown.

Brack’s writing is poetic without being dense, filled with vivid imagery that is both striking and easy to absorb. She has a way of bringing scenes to life with clarity and warmth, making the memoir feel immersive without ever overwhelming the reader.

What’s perhaps most impressive is how polished her voice feels. She writes with the confidence and precision of a seasoned author, making it hard to believe this is her debut. It’s a remarkable first book, and one that lingers with you after you’ve finished it.
