A nice guide for having good posture. Author has explained the anatomy of human body muscles, joints and how bad posture affects them, causes pain and disability in long run. It also talks about importance of proper breathing and how poor posture affects the effectiveness of breathing and have cascading effects on the bodily functions. The book also includes simple exercises with pictorial description to strengthen the muscles succoring different joints of the body. This exercises will eventually help to have good posture. Overall good read to practically follow the guide in our daily routine, so that we can live pain free and healthy.
- The book does a good job in providing a holistic view of postures (eg: how breathing is associated with back posture, how some leg muscles are associated with the way we stand). - It enlists some very helpful asanas for variety of posture related problems.
Now, here are some issues with the book:
- The book is badly edited - not only are some contents repeated but so are some of the images (pointing to same problems repeatedly). Wrong sitting posture causes pain - we get that! Repeating it does not help! - The book is very badly organized - Dr Mahtani talks about a problem and then mentions that the solution is provided later (in some other chapter or some other section!) This happens repeatedly and is annoying. This is especially annoying when reading this as ebook (as I was).
Disclaimer: Tired of the way this book is edited and organized, I gave it up once I had read 2/3rd of the book. I decided to note down names of some of the asanas helpful for my posture problems and lookup youtube videos for the same instead. So if there was content in the last 1/3rd of the book that changes thing dramatically, I wouldn't know.
This is a very good book explaining how we do not take care of our body muscles, joints, posture. How it gets underused for many years and weakens.. all these lifestyle habit can be very effectively changed by just correcting various body posture. She gives simple correction ways in the form of simple stretching.
Although the book could have been shorter it gives valuable and practical information about posture. I would like a chart of the stretches to remind me to do them so I will probably make one.
The way author has started is just amazing to connect with the topic. The importance of posture and then lastly the yoga for specific benefits is just great.
My fav quotes (not a review): "Tuck your tummy in slightly, hold it there and look in the mirror; you cannot help gush over this metamorphosis! If this short-lived change can be such a rewarding experience, imagine what it would be like if you could make this 'wow look' a lifetime possession?" "A hundred steps of backward walking are equivalent to a thousand steps of conventional walking." "While standing, we tend to put maximum weight on our heels. This pushes the knees back into an overarch and locks the knee joints. This is extremely harmful for the health of the knees." "When you are ready to get up, move forward to the front of the chair. Place your palms gently on your knees. If it is not already done, tuck your belly in by half an inch. Get up with as straight a back as possible, that is, minimize the forward-lean on your back when you get up." "Sneezing or Coughing: The spine gets subjected to a high level of pressure torque when we cough or sneeze. It is advisable to lean back slightly or stay erect during bouts of sneezing and coughing. Bending forward during these bouts can trigger or worsen an injury."
Book start with a very good concept of how Postures affects our body and health but later it is like Ok kinda stuff. No doubt the material in the book is beneficial for us but writing can be brief and more interesting facts should have added to make it complete. Overall a decent read.
Easy to read and a practical guide to good posture. I like how it succinctly covered the theory of good posture and included simple yoga stretches in the relevant sections.
