Successful lawyer Mark Johnson receives an unexpected houseguest in Kim Wade, a young woman who is the stepdaughter of his older sister Miriam who he hasn't seen in years. The now-widowed Miriam has sent Kim to temporarily stay with Mark while she is setting up new living arrangements for the two of them. Kim, who had a troubled childhood before living with Miriam has her own dreams and ambitions but finds it difficult to even begin. She and Mark are wary of each other, but Kim begins to see what a decent and caring man he is. Mark admires Kim's determination and sees her untapped potential. He offers his help and they start to fall for each other. But difficulties occur. The age difference between them could make it seem inappropriate for them to be living together. How will it affect Mark's career? Plus the growing suspicion that the scheming Miriam has not been honest with both Kim and Mark.
I enjoyed this story. Kim was hardened by her early childhood. It was good to see her with a goal in mind, and to experience someone like Mark who took her ambitions seriously and showed consideration and care for her. For Mark , Kim became the woman he deeply cares for, even at the expense of his relationship with Miriam when he learns of her behavior towards Kim.
Another gentle Harlequin romance from Shannon Waverly. Girl meets boy in a weird arrangement contrived by girl’s stepmom who also happens to be the hero’s sister. Hero thought he was going to provide a temporary abode to a tween; instead he gets a 23 year old guest.
Hero is definitely beta. Doesn’t rail at his sister for landing him with an unwanted female; has window curtains tumbling down on his head; doesn’t ridicule heroine when she says her ambition is to be nanny but finds her an “internship” with a friend’s family; passes up a big promotion to set up his own law firm; grins more often than he scowls at the girl and moons about her photo on his desk. Typically, the use of the word “kitten” as term of endearment for the heroine would repulse me but in this story it works for his character.
I loved the heroine, she was so gentle and I hated the hero, he was so weak. She needed love but he just left her like her parents and stepmother becouse of his fears. The hero should have asked her what she wants, see the world or settle down with him instead of rejecting her almost all the time without an explanation. He is the older one so he should have shown some wisdom.
She didn't want to be there. He didn't want her to stay. The arrangement was temporary - but their marriage was for keeps!
