Remember that line from the ghost movie, Sixth Sense? That reminds me of this book because the hero insists on seeing only what he wanted to see.
The premise is definitely angsty. Jon is the heroine’s best, bestest friend ever, come back in town and travel-weary from all that gallivanting around the world in pursuit of musical fame. They have an unresolved issue because, just before they parted ways in the summer after HS graduation, they had become lovers. But the guy pulled away from her after that fateful night and he admits now in hindsight that he had been scared of ruining their friendship. Typical teenage behavior.
For the most part, I like Angela's reaction to his intrusion in her well-organized life: avoidance. Right off the bat, she says that she isn’t interested in renewing their relationship, that she has moved on, that she won’t allow herself to be discarded like that again.
But what I didn’t like is how Jon's charm manages to catch her offguard every single time. His charm! Pah! His easy-going and flippant actions, his smiling and confident way, his persistent and devil-may-care attitude eventually breaks down her defences. Without any sweat equity from him, he’d succeed in getting her back. Because he’s irresistible. Because he has charm.
And it’s not fair.
He doesn’t see her at all. It’s has always been about him and getting his own way. He wants what he left behind all back in one nicely packaged home and hearth and woman. He wants to settle down so he goes back to the girl he left behind. He does not even understand how important the job offer was for her. So when the job fiasco blows up, he gets offended and leaves! How’s that for his track record? Desert-er.
That’s it: his one chance to prove – to actually struggle to prove himself – and he ups and leaves. Then, SHE goes after HIM to apologize. Ugh!!
So, no. For all the consideration and effort that the hero gives to her, she might as well have been a dead person.
3.5 stars To teens (Angela and Jon) who were best friends in high school but ran in different circles, went on a camping trip after graduating. Needless to say something momentous happened and neither handles it well. They went their separate ways for 10 years and now jon's back and both have applied for symphony orchestra directorship. This is viewed by Angela as backstabbing from a friend. Jon then resigns the position. They meet after this, work out their differences. They have their HEA after he explains that he came back after all theses years to make amends. Angela seems to have somewhat of an inferiorty complex and seems whiny.
