Love this sweet spicy royal intrigue book - received as an arc

This book is not within my normal genre of reading, but boy o boy did i love it.

Lots of slow simmering, romance, intrigue, and spice. It’s kind of like a Royals deluxe. The chemistry between Lucian and Sophia is so sweet. With Lucian, knowing what he wants early on and Sophia taking a while to get there, but she gets there!

I would highly recommend this book ❤️

✦ ARC REVIEW, COPY RECEIVED FROM THE AUTHOR ✦

This is one of those books that does not try to impress you loudly, but slowly pulls you in.

I received an ARC of The Empire of Reign, and it turned out to be very different from what I expected. Instead of a fast paced dark royal romance, this is much more slow and character focused.

Sophia is a very controlled and intelligent FMC. She does not rely on dramatic moments to stand out. Her strength comes from how she observes, calculates, and handles situations, which makes her feel very real in a royal setting.

Lucien is also not your usual male lead. He is quiet, composed, and always paying attention. He does not reveal much, but still manages to keep you interested.

What I liked most was their dynamic. It is not instant romance or over the top chemistry. It is more about tension, conversations, and slowly understanding each other. That slow build worked really well for me.

What I liked most was their dynamic. It is not instant romance or over the top chemistry. It is more about tension, conversations, and slowly understanding each other. That slow build worked really well for me.

The writing is detailed and focused on subtle moments and internal thoughts, so the pacing is definitely slow at times. Some parts in the middle felt a bit dragged, but it still fits the overall tone of the story.

I also liked that the arranged marriage angle felt political and important, not just there for romance.

Overall, this feels like the beginning of something bigger. It is more about building the characters and their world, and I am really curious to see how everything develops in the next book.

Tropes:
• Arranged Marriage
• Political Alliance
• Slow Burn
• Royal Setting
• Power Dynamics
• Cold and Controlled Characters

If you enjoy character driven stories and slow build tension, this is worth trying.

The Empire of Reign follows Sophia, a crown princess carrying secrets from her past, and Lucien, the heir of a powerful empire brought into her world through a political alliance. What starts as strategy and duty slowly turns into something deeper, darker, and impossible to ignore. With hidden truths, betrayal inside the palace, and dangerous enemies closing in, their story becomes a fight for power, survival, and love.
Sophia was such a strong heroine. She is sharp, guarded, and carries so much pain, but that only made me love her more. Watching her fight through everything while still standing strong was honestly one of my favorite parts.
And Lucien… this man was everything. Protective, intense, loyal, and completely gone for her in the best way. The way he stood by her, defended her, and loved her so fiercely made my heart melt.
The chemistry between them was insane. Every scene had tension, softness, and that perfect emotional pull that kept me wanting more.
The plot was so good too. The secrets, the betrayals, the palace politics, and the twists kept everything exciting. That backstory reveal hit hard and made Sophia’s character even stronger.
This is my first book by Ash King, a new-to-me author, and honestly what a gem. I am definitely excited for more from this author. Thank you author for the ARC. It was such a beautiful and intense read and I loved every moment of it.

There’s something about romances built on restraint that always stay with me longer than the loud, dramatic ones — and The Empire of Reign did that beautifully.

Sophia & Lucien’s relationship isn’t instant or easy. It unfolds through politics, denial, emotional tension and carefully calculated interactions where both characters constantly feel like they’re hiding pieces of themselves. The push-pull dynamic between them genuinely became my favourite part of the book.

What stood out most to me was the writing style. The introspective narration, the way human thoughts and emotions were explored, and especially the comparison of the human mind to files being stored away — those details made the story feel intelligent and emotionally layered.

And then came the epilogue.
That entire section completely changed the emotional weight of the book for me.

Lucien’s proposal felt restrained, deliberate and devastatingly intimate in a way that didn’t rely on grand gestures.
“I did not love you in moderation.”
That line alone carried so much of their relationship.

There were moments where certain explanations and introspective passages felt longer than needed, and the pacing occasionally slowed because of it. But by the ending, I could understand why the author chose to build the story this way — it feels very much like the foundation for something much bigger in book 2.

Overall, this felt like a dark political romance focused more on emotional tension and psychology than spectacle, and I’m genuinely excited to continue the series.

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for The Empire of Reign by Ash King, and wow, this book completely consumed me.

I’ll admit, the pacing felt a little slow in the beginning, but stick with it because the payoff is worth it. The character development was phenomenal, and every character felt layered, believable, and emotionally compelling.

The chemistry? Off the charts. The spicy scenes were impeccable, perfectly written, intense, and incredibly satisfying without overshadowing the plot itself.

What truly stood out for me was the character building. Watching the relationships evolve and seeing the emotional depth unfold made every moment hit harder. By the end, I was fully invested.

And THAT ending?! The cliffhanger has me desperate for book two already. I need answers immediately.

Genre: Dark Romance

Tropes:
• Slow burn
• Enemies to lovers
• Found family
• Political intrigue
• Touch her and die vibes
• Cliffhanger ending

If you love emotionally intense romance with incredible chemistry and addictive tension, definitely put this on your TBR.

If you like royal intrigue, romance and a MFC who hides behind many faces due to a dramatic past, you will enjoy reading The Empire of Reign. Princess Sophia can help rule a country with intelligence, poise and grace, but when it comes to her relationships with others and her soon to be husband, she acts like Temperance Brenna from Bones. She is socially detached. She analyses every situation to know how to respond and act.

Although, I’m a fantasy reader, I did enjoy the book. I enjoyed the dialogue between Sophia and Lucien, a royal. I enjoyed how their relationship transcends through out the story while they also must discover who is trying to assassinate Sophia. I like the road the reader follows as Ms. King slowly takes us in the past to understand Sophia. I especially enjoyed the twist at the end and will continue to follow the series.

OK. So this book is a must-read.

I am tired of indecisive heroines. They are just waiting for someone to save the day, and a powerful heroine doesn't mean someone who just puts opinions, and it's the other powerful characters doing her bidding. Sophia Arden controls the room, and man, does she understand power. I just love her.

Lucien, on the other hand, just can't stop himself from falling for her. I mean, I totally get it.
He is also a possessive hero who knows when to respect her and when to force his way in. I

This novel did the slow burn right.

The Slow Burn- Check
The Angst- Check
Powerful Character- Check
The Romance- Totally Worth It.

Loved It. Can't wait for Book 2.

Sophia is powerful, resourceful, a force to be reckoned with but with secrets. However she isn’t the only one with secrets. I enjoyed how Lucien and Sophia’s dynamic was in this story. Definitely a must read as I wasn’t able to stop reading it.

I went into this one a little hesitant since I’m not usually big on heavy fantasy politics, but King did a really great job balancing that aspect. It added depth without ever overwhelming the story.

I loved the underlying mysteries woven throughout — what happened to Sofia during her missing seven years and who was behind the attempts on her life. King ties these together really well, wrapping things up with a satisfying resolution… and then leaves you absolutely screaming at the end with that cliffhanger. I’m fully invested now and need book two immediately.

The characters were really well written. I especially enjoyed how calculated their dialogue felt — every interaction had intention behind it. The way King handled the quieter in-between moments really highlighted just how intelligent Lucien and Sofia are.

Lucien… OMG. This is how you do slow burn. Patient (until he’s not), possessive king energy done RIGHT. I ate it up.

I also really admired Sofia. She wasn’t just strong on the surface — she was hardworking, intelligent, and deeply caring. The way she took care of everyone around her (even when she didn’t take care of herself) contrasted so well with the moments where she could absolutely put ministers in their place. Like yes girl 👏

The friendships in this book were another standout. You can truly feel the bond between people who’ve been through trauma together. No spoilers, but every single one of them is a badass, and their loyalty to each other made total sense.

Honestly, I knew I had to read this from King’s acknowledgements all the way to the banging playlist.

If you love slow burn, layered mystery, and characters who actually think before they act — you need this in your life.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️

i really wish i liked this book more, but i cannot rate it any higher than this. this author really, really needs an editor. sometimes, things do not need to be overwritten to death. the flowery language, the constant metaphors and similes, the constant wordy comparisons. the run-on sentences that would span a paragraph, and sometimes longer!! it drove me crazy, at some point. i wanted to DNF at 60% and somehow managed to pull through, only to be pissed off by the incredibly unnecessary cliffhanger. there’s 3 separate conflicts, and they’re all handled with infuriating calm and calculation. there never feels as if there’s genuine stakes. lucien and sophia fall in love over seemingly nothing? i feel so detached to these characters, it’s almost like i know nothing about them aside from the glaring personality characteristics that were used to further the plot points. the only tolerable parts were the sex scenes, and that is not a great moniker.

i believe this story could potentially be great, but the author needs to narrow the conflict to 1-2 things, not a plethora. i literally forgot about the succession conflict, because there was too much going on. her father’s medical condition? never really brought up again outside of the beginning of the story. there were no stakes there either. furthermore, the author desperately needs to edit this down to something more manageable. not everything needs a flowery metaphor or language. overwriting is a thing, and it’s a huge detriment to this story.

thank you to Ash King for the opportunity to review this eArc.

This book is truly intriguing from beginning to end. I really enjoyed how the story was written through the POVs of both main characters. We get to see the thoughts of both the FMC and MMC, and it was fascinating to watch how they slowly tried to understand each other little by little.

At first, the MMC’s proposal felt purely strategic. Helping the royal heiress while also bringing stability and benefits to their company. But as the story progressed, it became clear that his interest in the princess ran much deeper. I loved discovering that he had been observing her for years, believing it was only curiosity, until he slowly realized he was falling for her.

What made this story even more enjoyable for me was how both characters constantly assessed each other’s actions and reactions while struggling to understand their own emotions. Neither of them was familiar with love, which made their connection feel unique and realistic in its own way. I could honestly relate to how the characters analyzed people and situations around them.

There were moments when some ideas and phrases felt repetitive, and at times the pacing became a little slow, but I also understand why it was written that way. It reflected the characters’ confusion and emotional unfamiliarity. There was also a slightly confusing part later in the story when the POV suddenly shifted unexpectedly, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the book overall.

Despite those small issues, I still genuinely loved how the story unfolded. The mystery, tension, and emotional development between the characters kept me interested the whole time.

The Empire of Reign by Ash King
What an opener… this book had me hooked from the synopsis alone — and it did not disappoint.
Sophia and Lucian? Obsessed is an understatement.
What begins as a seemingly chance meeting quickly unravels into something far more calculated—an encounter orchestrated years in advance, all for the convenience of the crown. But here’s where it gets addictive: Lucian has already fallen. Long before the proposal, before the politics, before the game truly began… he was hers.
And Sophia? She’s built differently. Strong, guarded, and completely unwilling to fall—making their dynamic absolutely electric.
This story delivers on every trope in the best way: • Marriage of convenience
• Power couple energy
• He falls first and harder
• Emotionally untouchable heroine
• Possessive, dominant leads
• Political intrigue woven throughout
• A slow burn that hurts so good
The tension between them is perfectly paced—every interaction layered with meaning, power, and restraint. You can feel the push and pull, the control, the vulnerability trying to break through.
If you love calculated romance, high-stakes dynamics, and characters who are just as dangerous emotionally as they are politically—this one needs to be on your radar.
This isn’t just a love story… it’s a strategy.

I received a free copy of The Empire of Reign from the author, which was very kind and appreciated💜

This is a story written with clear passion and emotional intensity. The author puts a great deal of care into the character dynamics and romantic tension, and that dedication is evident throughout the book.

The emotional awareness between the characters is very heightened. They are deeply attuned to each other’s gestures, words, and shifts in mood. For readers who enjoy intense romantic focus and constant emotional analysis, this will likely enhance the experience. For me, it occasionally felt a bit overwhelming, but I can see the intention behind it.

Some plot developments, particularly certain revelations, felt somewhat predictable to me and were resolved more quickly than I expected given the weight they carried. However, the story does maintain momentum, and the final cliffhanger clearly sets up the next installment in a compelling way.

Overall, I genuinely appreciate the effort and creativity behind it. The author clearly has vision and commitment, and I am sure this story will resonate strongly with readers who enjoy emotionally driven fantasy romance with dramatic intensity and evolving stakes💜

The empire of reign

Read this if you love…dark romance. Fantasy. Forced proximity. Marriage of convenience. Two POV chapters. “Who did this to you?” Possessive (in a non toxic way) Political intrigue. Slow burn

The lovely Ash reached out to me asking if I wanted to sign up to ARC read their book and of course I said yes! 🫶🏻

I felt myself getting lost in this world very quickly. She’s a princess and he’s an aristocrat and there’s an arranged marriage between them to help the country and the crown. Lucien has been observing Sophia for five years, intrigued by her. He yearns after her and wants the arranged marriage to be more than just a facade.

This man is down BAD on his knees for her. He worships the ground she walks on and gives her time to sort through her trauma and is there when she’s ready to talk. I love to see a healthy supportive relationship in books with dark romance themes and tones

Adore Sophia’s friend group we get to meet in the first few chapters. I liked how everyone was introduced separately so we get to meet them and get to know their personalities. Makes even more sense towards the end of the book :,)

Very intrigued by the ending….!

The Empire of Reign is a slow burn, character based, Royal romance fantasy.. filled with political intrigue, secrets, royals, a political marriage, a strong and smart FMC and a MMC that is the perfect mix between gentleman and morally grey! This book was written in a bit of a lyrical way, very detailed and focussed on the inner thoughts of the main characters and everything going on around them. Because of this, it was quite slow for me at some points in the book and I struggled with that a bit. Apart from that, I did enjoy the story itself and the thing I liked most was the dynamic between Sophia and Lucien.. So much tension underneath all the composed and calculated conversations!

interesting

I really enjoyed the mystery and intrigue in this book. The whole book the MMC and FMC are dancing around each other. He falls first. The way the book is structured makes you want to keep reading and finding out more of her story. The bad guy was a little predictable, however I really enjoyed this story. It was a slow burn. Touch her and die. I feel like there is more than meets the eye to the MMC that will be discovered in other books.

Received this from the author and my oh my. This was out of my normal genre of reading but let me tell ya it gives off Queen Victoria meets Bridgerton meets secret society vibes. The secrets, the plot twist you least expect the romance and don’t even get me started on the ending 😭. I really enjoyed reading this and look forward the book 2.
