Immortal Flame is book one in the Hell to Pay series by Jillian David. This is the first book by Jillian and wow, just wow. What an entry she has made.

La Grande

Dr. Allison La Croix is an Emergency Dr. in La Grande, Oregon. It’s interesting that Allie chose being a Dr. as a profession because at all costs, Allie must keep herself from touching any other person’s skin. Whenever Allie comes in contact with another person’s skin, if death is in that person’s near future, she will see it, experience it through a vision. Because of this, Allie doesn’t allow herself to enter into any sort of personal relationships. She lives alone with her adorable but huge dog, Ivy. The only people she is close to is her sister, brother in law and her beautiful little six year old niece. But her world changed the night Peter Blackstone came into her ER.

Don't Stop Your Medical Treatment For Car Collision Injuries at ...

“All she wanted in this world was to be rid of her useless, sick power. She wanted a normal life, to love a normal man, and maybe have a family. But that wasn’t going to happen as long as she continued in her role as the angel of death.”

great dane

Peter was on the way to his next assignment when he was in a horrible car accident and was rushed to the ER. Peter is not an ordinary human, though, he is indebted. In order to save someone he loved, long ago he signed a deal with the devil that made Peter a killer. But that night, when Allie accidentally brushed his skin, all the pain of his past, all the burdens he carried, were lifted, and for those brief seconds, he felt light.

Dear Publishers, Dear Booksellers: A Mohawk Indian Explains Why ...

“She represented possibilities and hope-two things he neither deserved nor wanted to consider.”

When Allie accidentally touched Peter, she saw horrible things, so many deaths. Who or what was this man?

Peter and Allie are drawn together, their strange connection at first, frightening, becomes a comfort to them both. Peter is able to help Allie with her power, to learn to control it. Both of them experience hope for the first time at finding love. Their connection is more than just due to their abilities. The chemistry between them is crazy hot. The first time they kissed was I think one of the sexiest kisses I have ever read.

“He inhaled deeply. Home. Damn it all, she smelled like home. Something he would never have.”

against the wall

But Allie knows that Peter cannot be her future. He doesn’t have a future to offer her. What she doesn’t realize, though, is that she is already in danger. Jerahmeel, who is the human form of Satan and is Peter’s ‘boss,’ knows that Peter is getting close to finding out how to end his contract and he can’t allow that. So in order to keep Peter in line, he will hurt anyone that Peter is close to which includes Allie and her cute little niece.

“He wanted to fight her demons. Hell, he was one of her demons.”

snowshoeing

This book was a crazy, sexy, intense ride, and I loved every minute of it. I loved Peter and Allie together and from the start, wanted for them to be able to find happiness together. But the evil in Peter’s life tries to take away any chance of that. There were times when I simply couldn’t read fast enough to see what happens next. Not only did I fall in love with the two main characters, but also, Peter’s friend Dante. It’s hard to believe this is Jillian’s first book because it is well written, fast paced, and crazy good. There is not a cliff hanger, but book two, Relentless Flame, will be Dante’s story and is due out in May. I can’t wait to continue on in this world and get to know Dante’s story.

What would you do to save a loved one? Peter Blackstone, survived World War II to come home to the love of his life. Newly married, Peter discovers that the hell of war was nothing compared to the knowledge that his wife was dying and nothing could be done for her. Shattered and broken, when a man approached him saying he could save his wife, if Peter was willing to pay the price, having little faith the man could deliver. When his wife miraculously survived and healed, Peter learned he had made a deal with the devil and his punishment could last an eternity as his existence was wiped from his bride’s mind. He has just become a disciple to the devil and death after death will be on his hands.

Fast forward a few decades to Dr. Allison LaCroix, a tortured woman who can “see” people’s deaths. Their paths cross in the emergency room when Peter is brought in after a horrendous accident. One touch and Allison has seen all of the deaths Peter has caused, but there is goodness in him, in spite of the monster he has become. Has Peter been given another chance at love? Too bad this doesn’t work for his master, Jerahmeel , who sends his minions to destroy Peter and those he cares about. If only Peter could find that one great kill that will free him, but will he find it in time or will he lose another love to death? With the help of others like him, he just might do it, or cause their deaths, too.

Jillian David’s Immortal Flame is a dark and gritty tale shadowed by the devil, himself. Peter is a strong, yet damaged character, ready to give up on what passes for his life, but finding Allison gives him a reason to want to be free and to live once again. Jerahmeel is a typical bad guy, haughty, deceitful and full of himself, but his “charm” is completely overshadowed by Peter’s friends and fellow pawns who bring a little lighthearted snark and attitude to the table. There is an atmosphere created by Ms. David that feels heavy, tense and dangerous, yet the pacing is even and enticing to follow. Ms. David has given her tale’s version of dealing with the devil a new twist that feels contemporary and fresh, making it a great escape for a few hours, just do NOT expect fluff. I for one, look forward to more from this author, who seems to enjoy the dark side of the street where things go bump in the night.

My Thoughts - Story
Wow…just wow! I am in shock with how much I enjoyed this book. It totally took me off guard because by reading the synopsis – I honestly didn’t think I was going to like it.

The writing is fantastic – and the way Ms. David uses descriptive information, I felt I was playing the movie out in my head. I could see the characters, the scenery and everything else that was going on.

I instantly connected with Allison and loved her character the most. That little spitfire was a hero in my book. Now, Peter I had to warm up to him but once he chilled out…he had a spot in my heart. I also loved the secondary characters and can’t wait for Dante’s book.

For this being a debut book – my hat goes off to Ms. David!

Re-Cap
Allison has the ability to see a person’s death and it happens quickly after. Is this a curse or a gift? Living with this curse, Allison tries her best to control it until she meets Peter. The mysterious patient who came in and healed quickly.

Peter has sold his soul to the devil and is his minion in killing criminals to feed energy to the big ole’ skeezy Satan. He is bound to hell until he has his Meaningful Kill. In constant turmoil over what he has to do, Allison seems to be the only one who calms him.

These two must work together if they want a future together.

Peter

I would like to thank Reading Alley and Crimson Romance for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

5.5 stars!!!

I have a bit of a confession to make: I actually had this pretty little ARC on my shelf since 2016 and I still had not read it…until now! After I finished reading “Immortal Flame” by Jillian David, I was seriously whacking myself in the head for not reading this ARC much sooner! “Immortal Flame” was a truly fantastic paranormal romance read that made me want to read more from this series!

Peter Blackstone is an unusual person because even though he served as a veteran in World War II, he still looks extremely young for being a vet from World War II. That is because in 1945, when Peter’s wife Claire was dying of a deadly sickness, Peter traded his soul to the devil, Jerahmeel in order to save Claire’s life. But, in trading his soul, Peter is now a hired killer for the devil and he must go out and kill every bad person in the world so that way Jerahmeel would be able to feed on the souls of the people killed in order to survive. At the same time, a young doctor named Allison La Croix seems to possess the ability to be able to see people’s deaths when she touches a person, which causes her so much turmoil since she wanted to live a normal life for once. One day however, Peter ends up getting into a car accident and when he is taken to the hospital to tend to his wounds, Allison stumbles upon him and when she touched Peter, she starts seeing images of death that overwhelms her to near insanity. It was then that Peter discovered about Allison’s powers and he tries to help Allison control her powers so she will not see people’s deaths too often every time she touches someone. Unfortunately, Jerahmeel starts seeing that Peter and Allison are developing a close relationship with each other and he decides to send out one of his minions to kill Allison so Peter will never back out of his contract. Now, Peter and Allsion will have to avoid Jerahmeel’s minion in order to not only survive but to save their love for each other in the process!

Wow! I was quite impressed with this book! Jillian David’s writing was quite entertaining and sexy as heck as I found myself reading through this book rather quickly due to waiting with anticipation at how Allison and Peter’s love will survive Jerahmeel’s attempts to separate them! I loved the way that Jillian David created this creative world as I was intrigued by the fact that the devil is apart of this world and it brings a sense of danger to this world as the characters have to watch their backs whenever the devil gets HUNGRY. I also loved the way that Jillian David wrote both Allison and Peter as I find their relationship to be quite realistic and at times tragic due to the state of their situations. I actually felt bad for both Allison and Peter as they both wanted to live normal lives, but their powers make things difficult for them and I was wishing throughout the whole story that they both get their happily ever after. I really loved Peter’s character as he is shown to be quite courageous, caring, strong and SEXY and I loved the fact that he is willing to put his life on the line if it means protecting Allison at all costs. I also loved Allison herself as despite her fearing her powers, she is shown to be just as caring as Peter as she also tries to protect her loved ones from her powers and from any evil force that might befall her. And the sex scenes are full of PURE SIZZLE that I was fanning myself every time a sex scene comes up between Allison and Peter!

For anyone who does not like gory violence or sex scenes, there are some explicit sex scenes that readers can skim over if they do not like reading sex scenes. Also, the gory violence in this novel are a bit graphic and even disturbing as I found myself cringing a bit at how gruesome the violence towards certain characters were. Also, and this is a bit of a small nitpick, but I wished that Allison would have done more in this novel than just worry about her future and fearing her powers as I wanted to see her actually fight against the bad guys using her powers. Oh well, maybe we will see some of that in the later novels!

Overall, “Immortal Flame” is TRULY one paranormal romance that every paranormal romance fan should definitely check out! And, after I found out that this was apart of a series, I was SQUEALING with delight when I found out that there was a second book in the series that features Dante, which I got to pick up as soon as possible!!!

I feel like we’re always hearing about beach reads and summer reads this time of year, so if anyone is looking for something different than those light and easy reads, you HAVE to check out these books by Jillian David. One is a little darker than the other, but they were both pretty entertaining. Keep reading to see what I mean…

Selling your soul to the devil never quite turns out as one hopes. For Peter Blackstone this is all too true. When he was at his most desperate, he signed away his life without thinking of the consequences. When it was time to pay up, he was filled with regret. Now, decades later, he is looking for his out. He knows there is a way but he doesn't know the details and he makes a bad mistake. He falls for a woman who can be a threat to his demon handler.

The world building in this book is a bit weak. There are several assumptions a reader must make if they have never read a book involving selling a soul to a demon or watched the series, Supernatural. The author tends to gloss over the world building and focuses on the conflicted relationship between Peter and Allison. Allison La Croix is a doctor who treated Peter for terrible injuries only to see miraculous healing. Not understanding how he could be healed, she becomes more involved with him than she plans. This takes her down the proverbial rabbit hole and a whole new world explodes in living colour for her.

The conflicts in this story are two fold. One is Peter trying to find a loop hole out of his contract so he can be with Allison. Two is Peter and Allison's rocky dysfunctional relationship trying to take off. The first conflict is nicely done. The second one is not my favourite because it is contrived, mostly because Allison half way through the relationship turns on her "holier than thou" attitude which is very off putting. It is a pet peeve of mine because it makes no logical sense. For others, it may not be an issue. Overall, this story moves very slowly and ends gradually with a slow sigh. This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who like redemption themes.

Honestly, Immortal Flame by Jillian David did not resonate with me as a reader. While I liked the plot and enjoyed the actual story, the book itself fell completely flat. I thought the plot line was unique and I was intrigued by the idea of Peter, a jaded minion of Satan searching for the “Meaningful Kill” to end his contract with the devil. The story was more than just a romance, and definitely had potential to be a great read.

Unfortunately, aside from the plot, Immortal Flame did not pull me in and keep my attention. The characters, Peter and Alison, felt very superficial. They were well fleshed out according to their respective roles as minion and ward and their connection via insta-love, but otherwise did not feel like real individuals. In my opinion, for a paranormal book to be successful and believable, the characters have to feel 100% human and draw a significant connection to the reader. Otherwise, the paranormal aspect seems even more far-fetched and unrealistic.

The writing style was also a detriment to the “believability” factor and actually created a stilted, slightly disjointed read. The author chose a casual, more colloquial style but then would pull out vocabulary more commonly seen on the SAT that was at complete odds with the feel of the writing.

Overall, if you enjoy an insta-love paranormal romance, you might enjoy this book. Many of my hang-ups with the book are personal issues such as writing style and a strong dislike of insta-love defining a character. While I did not fully enjoy the read, I am sure another reader might. ~ Alicia, 2 stars

I tried really, really hard to get into this book. I think my tastes have changed quite a bit and I just couldn’t finish. In the first chapter there was a lot of info thrown out (which was needed) but I felt very overwhelmed by it all.

The further I got unto the book, the more I started to understand, but I still had a hard time keeping my focus on the book.

The writing was good; it just wasn’t the book for me. ~ Devlynn, DNF

I was given this book in return for a honest review.

In this book we are introduced to Peter a WW2 vet, who is encompassed to the devil, for making the ultimate sacrifice. The beginning of the book, you are introduced to him after he just gotten into a horrible car accident. He is then taken to the ER, and this is where you meet Dr. Allison Le Croux aka "Dr. Al". Both of these characters have their secrets, a secret they've kept to only the people closest to them. But with their encounter in the ER, changes both their lives, possibly forever.

And it doesn't stop there from this one encounter, the book is basically non-stop from there. Full of action, desire, longing, hatred, and skepticism.

As many of you know, we'll that's the people who actually read my reviews. I don't generally give too much information on what happens in the book itself. This way there isn't any spoilers, or anything that could be potentially important to the storyline.

I however do give my opinion on the book and the author, and so here it goes. This book the minute I read the first few pages drew me in, it was seriously non stop from the get go. The writing was well written, and had an easy to follow flow. The storyline itself is original and the characters and scenery layout was easy to imagine. This author did an amazing job with this book, and brava to her for doing this while she was on call and in her spare time. It definitely gives potential author hope that they themselves can do this as well.

And as for the book itself, I highly recommending picking up a copy and giving this book a go. I do wonder if there will be more books later on.

Jillian David hits the ground running with her debut novel, Immortal Flame. An interesting tale of immortal, Peter Blackstone and gifted emergency room doctor, Allison La Croix, Jillian David has created an intriguing story of pain, suffering and love.

I was immediately fascinated with Allison's ability and how it impacted her life and relationships. The fact that she chose to be a doctor, knowing she might suffer from seeing the death of anyone she potentially comes in contact with, shows that she's both strong and caring. And there isn't a woman alive (or dead) that wouldn't fall in love with Peter. He's sexy, protective and a little mysterious. The circumstances that brought him to be an immortal was both heart-wrenching and gallant.

Packed with scorching love scenes, a bit of mystery and plenty of action, Jillian David keeps you wanting more from the very beginning. The compelling chemistry between Allison and Peter makes the romance truly believable and allows you to fully connect with the story. Without giving away any spoilers, I did find some of the secondary characters not as well developed, which did bring up some questions near the end of the book about the interactions between Allison and her family, but overall, this was an excellent read and one that I very much recommend.

Took a chance on this one and boy was I happy. New author, cool premise. Took me a few pages to figure out the Indebted concept, but once I did the world that opened up was different than anything I've read before. Love that Allison's got backbone but still needs sexy Peter's protection. Love the conflict of her being able to see death and that gift hurts her. And then Peter is a hired killer, so in a way he IS death. And how that conflict plays out woven in with their powerful attraction and love story. Won't say more, but the ending, wow. Can't wait for the next in the series.

A sweet paranormal romance with a touch of a mystery and thriller in the mix. A new twist on the consept of the deal with the devil. Interesting enough. Reading the about the author bit after finishing the book enlightened the accurate and realistic medical and hiking descriptions in the book. A few spelling and paragraph errors, nothing big or irritating. Recommended for the lovers of paranormal romances.

“I want you in my life for as long as we live.” – Allison La Croix

No matter how many stars I give this book, or how much I intend to praise it, I don't think I'm gonna do justice to the awesomeness that I was introduced to. Like, hell, how can you go on - even to the next book - after opening this particular treasure chest?!?!

Peter Blackstone is an Indebted - a warrior that should have died long ago, but made a deal with the devil to ensure they kept going. Now he has to keep feeding the latter with dark souls as part of the deal, an immortal living an eternal hell on earth. There's only one way for him to finally find peace and go back to being mortal - find his Meaningful Kill. But with no clues as to what or who that is, he's essentially helpless. Until he finds dr. Allison La Croix. Allison has a terrifying gift, one that has only been a burden in her life. And it looks like Peter's presence can help her control it - never mind the fact the man makes her want him and fear him at the same time. However, there's one person who's gunning to stop Peter and keep those two apart . With his own "boss" out to get him, protecting the woman who makes him feel alive and keeping his humanity just got a whole lot harder...

Where to begin? The unique as heck plot? The wonderful storytelling talent? The amazingly complex characters? The witty and funny dialogues? The climax of the book that had me screaming and crying and keeping my fingers crossed so that things would work out - even when I knew they would have to, seeing as it's a book and it's supposed to have a HEA? Or the steamy and hot love scenes?

An emotional roller-coaster, full of suspense, that had me waiting at the edge of my seat with bated breath. That's what this book was. Not only was I shocked at every turn, but it was also shiver-worthy and I'd do it all over again, without even blinking! Yes, this was definitely a book a reader can enjoy mutliple times, hands down!

Peter was a sweetheart despite being a brute at times, and his rough exterior really did nothing to hide what a marshmallow he was inside. He was all manly and Alpha without being overbearing, and when he turned up the heat... Oh, sweet cheese on crackers, summer heat combined with Peter in steamy scenes seriously had me sweating buckets and in terrible of cold showers! Not shower, SHOWERS!

As for Allison, she was a very realistic heroine. She wasn't perfect, she made tons of mistakes, and there were times I nearly lost my shit at her antics. I mean, yeah, I get where she's coming from, the whole thing with Peter was scary and it's normal to freak out. But WHY can't you decide that BEFORE making the dude hope, woman?! My heart just about broke when she kept pushing him away, and the poor fellow just kept being by her side like an oversized, macho puppy. Like I said, though, this was perfectly realistic. I may not like it, but I think it beats accepting the truth without batting an eyelash by a mile, so kudos to that. Plus, her kindness and her spunk overshadowed that natural freak out she had going on, and I'm not one to ignore that.

All in all, I loved the book. It sucked me right in from the very first page, something not all books are capable of nowadays. I usually need at least two chapters for that - some stories even take as far as 50 pages to get me to warm up to them. So to have this one intrigue me and get me hooked from the first page really speaks volumes, IMHO.

I'm off to start with Dante's story - and heads up, I think the guy's gonna be my bias of this series, if his lines in the first book were any indication!

“I love you, Allie. I would die for you.” – Peter Blackstone

First off let me say that I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting and I was glued to my tablet. The story line was a fresh take for me and I commend this author on her unique imagination and the ability to listen to her characters tell their story.

Peter Blackstone after surviving World War II comes home and marries the girl of his dreams. But when she is stricken with a deadly illness he realizes that nothing can be done for her and he literally is forced to watch her suffer to get life giving breath he realizes the horrors he faced in the war was nothing compared to the heartbreak he was experiencing. He feels he has nowhere to turn with the fear of losing his beloved wife he makes a pact and sells his very soul to the devil. He’s not dead but yet he is and now he is at the mercy of an unforgiving employer, Jerahmeel. His sins are insurmountable and unforgivable in his eyes. He’s no good to anyone and can never have the life he dreamed of having. A wife, kids, a home it’s all gone for him.

Peter is in a deadly car crash and is taken to a local hospital where the ER Dr. Allison LaCroix desperately tries to save his life. She soon realizes that there is something different about this man. He’s healing at an astronomical rate, a man that should be dead. But when she touches him she sees nothing but horrendous death, all these people whose lives are brutally wiped out. You see, Allie has her own special ability, one that she has bore since she was ten years old. When she touches someone skin to skin she sees death, most of the time the person’s own death. She experiences gripping pain when this happens and she has no warning as to when this ability is going to show itself to her.

But what Allie and Peter don’t expect is the attraction that they have to one another. Peter is a huge man, one of great power and strength and built like a brick. Allie is a broken woman with shattered dreams trying desperately to find a way in her life to make up for the deaths that she believes is her fault. Can these two come together in the midst of both their life altering abilities and find love?

This debut book of Jillian David is on the move and I can guarantee you when you read this you’re going to have a new favorite author. The story line is such a new fresh take and immersed in the devil as it is you’ll find yourself championing both main characters against evil and hoping they can overcome the obstacles in their lives to find love.

The story moves along at a good pace with just a few editing issues, definitely not enough to take from the book at all. As you get engrossed in the story you’re going to be on the edge of your seat in some of the scenes. There are twists and turns that you’re not going to expect with some action involved and the love scenes were very real, hot and sensual. Nothing in the raunchy way but cleanly written with taste.

All in all, I loved the story it was well written, good characters that will grab your heart to where you can feel their pain, their conflicts and joy. I would most definitely recommend this book. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, and I will definitely read more from this author. A BIG thumbs up for both the book and the author.

I've heard of this book for a while now, and I'm really happy I got to try it.

I've heard of this book for a while now, and I'm really happy I got to try it. As someone who is obsessed with reading stories with "gifted" people, I was really curious about this book.

Allison was an intriguing heroine. She's got a really dangerous and heartbreaking gift. I can't really imagine knowing exactly how someone I care about will die, and not be able to do anything about it. I was actually very surprised with how sane Allison was. Especially after learning about her family and how her mom hated Allison, for something she couldn't control.

Peter reminded me a little bit of the movie version Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, only a bit scarier. I liked reading about his inner struggle with what he had to do in order to pay his debt. I liked seeing how the killing didn't make him lose his mind. I also liked how he described the first time Allison touched him felt, I liked the imagery of that sense.

There's a cute secondary character, Quincy, that I hope we'll see more of throughout the series. She's such a cute little girl and I would want to read more about her.

The idea of someone selling their soul to save a loved one is certainly not new, but I was intrigued by how the author approached this theme. I've certainly never read about a group of people being indebted to a single evil entity, in this case Jerahmeel. I'm curious to see if the series will explore how this Jerahmeel gained his powers, if he can be defeated and exactly what is his endgame, if there is one.

The pacing of the story was good, although I had a feeling the ending was a tiny bit rushed. Even so, I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series, learn more about Jerahmeel and about the Indebted in general.

Well written paranormal romance with a unique storyline.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a book with a cover of a guy with a wifebeater on, slouching with his hands in his pockets. I was initially attracted to this book from the blurb, about a WWII vet who sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for his wife's life, many decades ago. I'm so glad I picked this up, because the contents are amazing - crisp writing, a solid blend of just the right amount of action and romance, and engaging characters.

Peter Blackstone is our man, an Indebted (to the Devil), having bargained with ol' Lucifer and now forced to act as mercenary for the Horned One. Peter has superhuman strength, speed and reflexes, and is looking for his last kill, the Meaningful Kill that will break his contract with Lucifer and get him some rest. Our gal is Dr. Allison, who also happens to possess a few powers of her own; specifically, she has visions of people's impending deaths if she happens to touch you. (So why do I find it so ironic that she works in an ER? Wouldn't this complicate matters? I'd think Allison might have wanted to pursue a career in elementary ed, where contact sport might be engaged with 8 year olds, not trauma victims.)

Pete and Al meet up in the ER, sparks fly - literally - and the story is on. The secondary characters are fun, particularly Peter's sometime Indebted partner, the huge Swede Dante, full of arrogance and charm. Also interesting is Barnaby, the aged former Indebted mercenary who somehow figured out how to break his contract with the Devil. Here's a story waiting to be written.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, much more than I anticipated. Great plot, excellent writing skills, fun characters. Good times all around for this reader.

On a drunken whim, Peter Blackstone traded his soul to save his dying wife. As a consequence, he's forced into becoming a hired killer for Jerahmeel. For Peter, the only way out of immortality is to obtain his meaningful kill- something he has no idea of how to do.

As an emergency room physician, Allison La Croix is no stranger to seeing death. But it's the future deaths that she see's through visions after coming in contact with someone that bother her the most.

Immortal Flame represents everything a good paranormal romance should offer. With strong, engaging, and highly attractive characters. A quick, all consuming chemistry and a primal need to protect, Jillian David does not disappoint. Peter and Allison were magnetic. A perfect gentleman, Peter oozes with sexiness and complements Allison's strong-willed personality perfectly. I loved that Allison was both physically and mentally strong and didn't back down. A couple of times, I even became a little emotional with each of their back story. For me, that is what makes a flawless read. One that you not only enjoy, but one that also overtakes your emotions and connects you with the story.

With an interesting and nicely paced plot, Immortal Flame is an excellent read. I very much look forward to the next installment in the Hell To Pay Series.

A pleasure to be given this book as an Independent reviewer for Paranormal Books and Authors that Rock. Jillian Davis has written an enticingly dangerous man in her heroines love interest. Can she save herself and him both? The action is exciting, the love scenes are scorching, and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The storyline follows a woman with the ability to see peoples death who meets a man who has dealt in death for many many years. The characters are believable, relatable and interesting. The bad guys are truly evil and creepy. All in all it was an truly enjoyable read. Four and a half fangs because it could have been a tiny bit more in depth on supporting characters.

I got this book from a booth at our local comic book convention where Jillian David was set up. She had several book and series' to choose from, so I chose Immortal Flame as a starter. (I try to exclusively read and review Indie and self-published authors)
I really liked the unique Indebted/Ward characters (with all the devil, demon, etc tropes out there, this was refreshing and new). It's a quick, short, easy read with lots of action packed in there. In a few instances, I would have like the author to go into a bit more detail but I was given enough to picture the characters and scenes vividly in my imagination.
There were a few spicy scenes that were well written but this book is mostly plot driven.

Overall, a great read and I'll probably continue in the series. I docked a star because there were a few places where the dialogue was choppy/weird.

This was an ok book. I liked the idea of the book - a man who made a deal with the devil to save someone he loves. Jillian did a good job developing the characters, but when it came time to break the deal with the devil, I was let down - that part took one chapter and didn't make much sense to me. I wish the last bit of the book (breaking the deal) was fleshed out better.

Book 0ne in the Hell to Pay series and I know I want to read the other books, this is a well-written book that kept my interest throughout. World War II veteran Peter Blackstone traded his soul so his wife could live he has lived a long life when he is severely injured he is rushed to Doctor Allison La Croix's ER. There is danger, suspense, drama, a lost child, and death.

Immortal Flame is a captivating story, pitting the good vs. the bad in an action-packed thriller that is definitely hard to put down!

I must admit this is my very first book on a paranormal genre. And it has turned me into an avid paranormal fan! My impression on paranormal books had always been one that is completely fictional painted in an unbelievable world. However, reading this book has dispelled this notion completely. I really like how author Jillian David has meshed the immortals seamlessly into our world, such that the entire story became very realistic and believable.

This book is full of high-octane action right from the very beginning, interlaced with sensuous romance that will definitely keep you turning page after page, chapter after chapter. Having said that, the pace of the story is just right; there is no dull moment at all. Every scene is well written, with enough details to give you a clear picture on what is happening, while at the same time not overly lengthy to make it boring. The beautiful Oregon location and sceneries mentioned also make for an interesting backdrop. (It has now been added to my “places to visit” list.)

Perhaps another reason that will keep you from putting this down is the lovely chemistry that emanated between Peter and Allison. Theirs is a seemingly impossible love story. Peter, an immortal with uncanny abilities that no mortals possess. And Allison, a doctor who simply longs for a simple life with a simple man. And yet, thru all these differences and thru all the adversities, their love grew. As magically as this may seem, the romantic build up was carefully written leaving you no doubt on how perfect they are for each other.

For anyone who likes a thrilling, action-filled story, this book is a must read! I will certainly recommend this to all my friends. Perhaps they may turn into paranormal fans as well.

My Thoughts:

I'll be the first to admit that I love a good paranormal romance story, but it has to be special. Something I haven't seen a million times before. Something that will stick with me. Unique characters, an original plot, and a twit. It's been a good while since I found a good paranormal romance series with a hook that left me wanting more. Then Immortal Flame fell into my inbox.

I have to say, when it comes to stories with soldiers or vets as the main characters, I oftentimes will skip them. In my experience the authors generally rely too much on the what ifs and the traumatic past of the characters and we never really find a story to be told in the present frame. For that reason alone, I was more than a little hesitant to start Immortal Flame, but I am so glad I did.

From the opening chapter, I knew this one was different. David has done an absolutely incredible job of developing a unique plot through the emotionally driven character development. It's about so much more than love and romance when the Devil himself is the man you're forced to serve. When Peter traded his soul during his service in WWII so his wife could live, he never expected to face the trials he has for near seventy years. Forced into servitude, he is slated to spend eternity look for his one Meaningful Kill to fulfill his contract and set himself free. When Allison arrives in his life by mere chance, he realizes that there are more important things than freedom at stake. After all he's been through can he find love yet again? Is there another chance for his happiness?

I won't lie, Immortal Flame was strangely emotional for me. It's truly a tale of redemption and second chances. David does an incredible job with her character development. While Allison was a fantastic character to follow throughout the story, Peter was really the one the stuck with me. It isn't often in this genre we see a strong male lead that isn't completely conformed to the mold of genre convention, but David really shown bright in this aspect.

The story is a quick read full of action, reflection, and emotion enough to satisfy all readers. The paranormal element is certainly present but definitely a whole lot more mild than it could have been and I definitely appreciated that. The fact that David crafted a paranormal romance that didn't rely solely on the paranormal element, yet was still a wholly satisfying read really speaks volumes to her talent as an author. I know this reader will be more than excited about devouring the remainder of this series.

In the end, I was more than satisfied by my first read from author Jillian David, It was everything I was looking for in a short paranormal romance and then some. I definitely have no regrets in check out this unique tale! All-in-all, I am granting Immortal Flame a well-earned 4-star review. But don't take my word for it, head on over and grab a copy for yourself today. You won't regret it! Add it to your TBR today!

I was given a copy to review by the author.

Immortal Flame I consumed in two days - this was such an enjoyable read.

Peter and Allison simply ignite when together, I have to say when they first kissed I was moved beyond words, I stopped and had to tweet the author, the way it was written and the connection was simply scorching - I have not read a first kiss like that in a long time. The way these two characters communicated not only through the physical connection but the emotional/paranormal way was just really beautiful, I understood Allison's gift and how Peter could help her. Her pain I could feel in the pages as each word communicated to me her gift and how it impacted on her - really impressive I thought.

As you know I am not a big paranormal reader but Peter and Allison connected with me and I honestly could continue reading another 200 pages about them. I searched after finishing this and note that the next book in this series is about Dante (Peter's friend) who is having a romance of his own so I do hope we perhaps hear about characters in this book again. Dante was actually one character I really found endearing and loyal and I will be looking for this book and have added to my Goodreads list.

Now one part of this story I simply loved was Allison and her dog Ivy, I am a dog lover and the relationship she had with this beautiful creature was wonderful, their companionship and Ivy's characteristics and wagging tail made me laugh and gave some light moments in a sometimes dark and scary tale.

So I can honestly recommend this book, if you are looking for a beautiful romantic story, with paranormal passion, dark characters & usual suspense this will not disappoint. Just a quick warning there is some violence in this novel that is quite graphic but in the context of the story I found exciting and important to the storyline.

I thoroughly enjoyed this paranormal romance about Peter, an ex-WWII soldier who sold his soul to the devil to save his dying wife, and Allison, an ER surgeon battling to make a normal life despite the visions of death she receives from touching other people.
Well-written paranormal romance

It's a genuinely excellent, engaging world that the author has created here with a completely believable mythos (although I did find myself wondering who makes the 'Rules' that Peter's demon master has to abide by).

I'd have liked to see a little more curiosity from Allison about Claire - yes, the woman is long dead and Peter had to cut off all contact with her after he made his deal, but he was still married to her and loved her deeply. That small quibble is probably just my liking for complete backstory showing, and it in no way diminished my enjoyment of the story.

The book is tightly written and the (couple of) sex scenes are hot and perfectly in context. I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone who likes paranormal romance, although I'd actually suggest picking up the complete Hell To Pay series, which the author has available on Kindle for 99 cents, rather than buying this one individually. I have no doubt the rest of the series will match this one for quality. Off to one-click it myself now!

Fantastic Plot!

This was a wonderful romance. "Two star-crossed lovers" is such a cliché but it describes this book so well!

Peter is near death as he is wheeled into the ER-- except he's already dead, having sold his Soul. The doctor that evening is named Alison. She has this amazing gift of 'seeing' people's death with just a touch, which sort of explains her use of gloves. (Her 'visions' always come true.) As Alison touches Peter, she 'sees' all of these deaths from by-gone times and somehow knows he's the killer but doesn't understand how or why. As these deaths are pulled from his psyche, he feels as if a huge load is lifted from him. Conversely, he sees the shock and horror of these misdeeds on her face, especially in her eyes. He teaches Allie how to 'control' her 'visions' to a certain degree, and they soon fall in love. But all is still not right in their world and they must work together for the benefit of all.

I liked these two getting in love instead of the Insta-love so prevalent in books today. The pacing of the story also felt right to me. I like the way this author thinks. The plot was fantastic!

Couldn't put it down!
I read these out of order, which I highly recommend you do not do if you plan to read the series. In my review of Relentless Flame, I said that it didn't feel like I was missing any details. I stand by that -- if you are reading the title as a stand alone. If you are not, they are sooo much better when read in the correct order.

Peter Blackstone and Allison LaCroix are such tragic characters and the love blooming between them seems impossible. This makes for an utterly compelling read that I recommend to any reader of the paranormal romance genre.

A Minute Review:

4 Stars:
He gazed down at her with a calmness and hunger she hadn’t seen before. “I need to be with you, Allie. I need you. Forever. That’s all there is to say.”
Immortal Flame is a pretty quick, fun paranormal romance with a surprising amount of suspense and action. I’m looking forward to book 2, Relentless Flame.

Recommendation: Read this if you’re a fan of Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series, or if you’re curious about how to get out of a deal with the devil ;)
