This was a very captivating read. Small towns chime with a lot of talk, gossip, and noses that are always where they don’t belong. This seems to be the case in this as well. A woman and her daughters lose their lives when their home burned down. People speculate. Something else happened, people start to wonder. Another unfortunate event and not people come to the conclusion that something is going on. It’s turned into a who did it. So not fingers are being pointed. And they all turn to one person in particular. This story was slow paced, but interesting enough that I wanted to keep reading. It wasn’t intense or had a bunch of twists and turns. It was balanced. And held just enough depth to keep me engaged. Overall, I thought this was really good. It showed hour easily minds can be swayed, people are quick to turn. And they’re looking for it to be something more than what it really is.
ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Release date: April 16, 2026 Look Away by A. Logan
First off—thank you for the ARC. Truly. Not just for the book, but for the uncomfortable nudge it gives. The kind that doesn’t politely tap your shoulder but rather grabs your chin and forces your head to turn. “Nope. You’re looking at this.”
This one… didn’t seduce me right away. It dragged its feet. Took the scenic route. Stopped to stare into the void a few times. And I’ll be honest—I almost bailed. I’m not patient. Slow burns and I have a complicated relationship. Mostly me glaring at the book like, “Are we going somewhere or…?”
But here’s the thing—it knows that. That urge to check out? To close the book and pretend you didn’t see what’s coming? That’s exactly what this story is about. And yeah… that realization hit a little too close to home.
Because once it clicks, it doesn’t gently unfold. It hits. Hard. In that quiet, unsettling way that feels way too familiar. The kind of “oh… shit” moment that lingers longer than you’d like.
No spoilers—but this isn’t just a story about a small town and tragedy. It’s about denial dressed up as ignorance. It’s about how people would rather believe in something dark and supernatural than face what’s right in front of them. Easier to label someone “the problem” than to admit maybe… just maybe… the problem is everyone else.
And that girl? The anxious, scared one who sees something others refuse to? Yeah. She’s not the comfortable character. She’s the mirror. And people hate mirrors.
This isn’t a quick read. Not a cozy “one more chapter before bed” situation. This is the kind of book you sit with. The kind that makes you pause, reread, and maybe feel a bit called out. Annoying, right?
Walking away is easier. It always is. Ignoring things is practically a personality trait at this point. But this book doesn’t really let you get away with that.
So read it when you’re ready. Not when you want distraction—but when you’re okay with being a little uncomfortable. When you’re willing to actually look.
Because once you see it… yeah. Good luck pretending you didn’t.
The book starts out strong, pulling the reader in with mysterious crimes that seem almost impossible to solve because there is little to no evidence left behind. From the very beginning, the suspense builds steadily, creating a constant sense of curiosity and tension. Each new event adds more questions, making it hard to predict what will happen next and keeping the reader fully invested in uncovering the truth.
For much of the story, the mystery and suspense are what drive the book forward. The unanswered questions and eerie atmosphere make the reader want to keep turning pages. However, near the final third of the book, that momentum begins to fade. The suspense that once made the story so engaging starts to disappear, and many of the plot points no longer feel as intense or meaningful. Instead of building toward a satisfying conclusion, parts of the story begin to feel rushed or underdeveloped.
By the ending, several details and storylines feel incomplete, leaving the resolution less satisfying than expected. While the beginning and middle of the book do a great job creating intrigue and anticipation, the final portion does not fully deliver on the strong setup. The story had the potential for a much more impactful ending, but ultimately leaves the reader with more confusion than closure.
Look Away is one of those rare books that doesn’t rely on cheap twists or shock value, it gets under your skin slowly and stays there.
From the opening pages, the atmosphere feels heavy in the best way. The burned-out house, the lone chimney, the way the town talks around what happened instead of about it… it all builds this constant sense that something is wrong, even when nothing is happening. And that’s what makes it so effective. The tension isn’t just in the plot, it’s in the silence, the rumors, and the way people start to change.
What really stood out to me was how real the characters felt. No one is completely reliable, and that’s the point. You start questioning what’s true right along with them. The story plays with perception in a way that makes you second-guess everything, and by the end, you’re not sure if the danger was ever what you thought it was.
This isn’t just a thriller; it’s a slow, psychological unraveling. It’s about grief, fear, and how quickly a community can turn when it needs something, or someone, to blame.
If you like books that linger after you finish them, Look Away absolutely delivers.
REVIEW OF ADVANCED COPY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR. I was captivated by the first chapter! This is a well developed story about a small town and the evil that invades it. How people’s views are influenced by the thoughts and opinions of others. How people embellish commentary without having personal experiences themselves. The characters are relatable and believable. Ultimately, Evil comes in many forms. At what point are we able to see the true evil…and can our minds accept it? That’s the real question.
This book had me intrigued from the very first chapter. While it’s not a fast-paced, twist-filled page-turner, the suspense builds steadily, pulling you deeper in with each chapter. The characters are believable and well-developed, making it easy to stay invested in their journey. The story itself is engaging and thoughtfully crafted, leaving a lasting impression. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author and seeing what they come up with next.
In a small town a number of incidents happen in quick succession. A student is followed by a dark figure. Word spreads. Fear follows. Uncertainty creeps into everything.
Are the events linked and is there a single person to blame?
Suspense builds as the story continues. An interesting read!
Arc review: This one drew me in right away and kept me captivated throughout. This story was set in a small town much like the small town that I am from and everything from the small town gossip to the way the rumor mill cranks out stories left and right was spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed this and highly recommend it!
Thanks to the author for allowing me to read his ARC. This book started really slow for me but since I promised to read it I continued and I’m glad I did. The mind is a powerful thing and it can turn an event into anything you want it to be. Sometimes a whole town will get behind it and the force is strong. It affects citizens and it affects cops. I would recommend this book. Stick with it!
This was a surprising read, one I didn't anticipate sticking with me or enrapturing me as much as it did. I liked that it was both a psychological suspense/thriller and also a moving story of loss, grief, hysteria, depression, anxiety, and shame. Well written, suspenseful, and moving, this book will stick with you after you finish. I'm glad I picked this up. 4/5 ⭐️
This book was not what I expected, and I’m good with that. The author’s voice was quite captivating to me. So much so, that I often highlighted passages for their lyrical quality. This book immersed me in its Southern Gothic tale, rather reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor. It also gave off “Our Town” vibes. I was Christina, I was also the small town, as are we all. Very well done!
This book AUTOMATICALLY had my attention and KEPT it! This story is in a small town and pretty perfectly depicted the way it is in a small town in my opinion. I absolutely enjoyed reading this and hope to do more ARC reading for A. Logan!
A great suspense thriller about how several seemingly connected incidences can put an entire small town in uproar. With his lyrical prose A. Logan perfectly conveys the creepy feeling that the cover of his book promises. A great book that any mystery / suspense reader will enjoy.
This book has the ability to change the world! It is impossible to put down. I cannot wait to see what A. Logan writes next! Just read it! You won’t be sorry!!
