Reunited and it feels so good...

Angie Harris and Asher Hayes were next-door neighbors growing up, but haven’t seen each other in ten years, not since Asher—who is also Angie's brother's best friend—moved away for college. When they happen to reunite in London, they find their feelings for each other never truly went away.

Asher works as a travel agent, and in a desperate attempt to save his job, he pitches a Caribbean pickleball vacation package to his boss, who insists he go and take his “girlfriend” from the photo they took together in London.

Angie is always up for an adventure and happily agrees to go along with his plan, even if they have to fake being a couple. Anything for some pickleball and sunshine in the middle of winter!

Can they navigate ten days in the Caribbean together, when their resort villa only has one bed? Are they strong enough to resist their feelings for one another, or will they finally be honest about what they’ve both wanted since high school?

Review of ARC received from author:

This book was fantastic! One of my favorite tropes is childhood friends to lovers, so Angie and Asher’s story immediately drew me in.

I really enjoyed reading about their vacation together 🏖️ —I felt so immersed in the setting that it was almost like I was there with them. The chemistry between the characters was believable and heartwarming, making it easy to become invested in their journey. ❤️

I also loved the inclusion of Angie’s diary entries throughout the story. ✍️ Those little glimpses into her thoughts and feelings added depth to her character and helped tie everything together beautifully.

Overall, Backspin was an enjoyable, emotional read that kept me engaged from beginning to end.

I've been excited to read and review this book! I know next to nothing about pickleball, but it didn't matter. The love story was just perfect! I started Backspin during a short weekend roadtrip and finished in two days!

Here are three things I loved about Backspin by Allison Rayne:

1. Rayne's unique twist on the brother's best friend trope. Asher is not just any brother's bestie. He has been estranged from Angie and her brother for years. He was also Angie's friend. As we unravel their past and why the group fell apart, we are also taken on a trip that pulls Angie and Asher together in ways they didn't expect.

2. A vacation read! Asher and Angies's love story is set against the backdrop of a Caribbean resort...and somehow a honeymoon suite. I can't tell you more about THAT, but I can tell you that I wish this resort was real, because I want to go, and I wish I could do this exact pickleball package (Hot guy included!). I'm a sucker for a tropical setting!

3. This one I can't actually describe, but the ending is so satisfying! It's not what I expected for this novel, but it really came together perfectly. And that's all I'll say about THAT.

I recommend grabbing a copy of this title. I didn't read the first story in this series (yet!), Getting Pickled, but it works well as a standalone. That being said, I have already gotten Getting Pickled on KU, and plan to read it soon. We learn enough about this couple during Backspin, that I'm so curious for their love story.

Thank you for this ARC copy in exchange for my truthful review.

Review of Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) ‼️ Release Date: July 1st

Backspin by Allison Rayne
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- 5 stars!

Going into this book, I was a little apprehensive as pickleball doesn’t particularly interest me, but I enjoyed the blurb and thought I’d try something new. “Backspin” definitely exceeded my expectations! There was a nice mix of strong friendships, pickleball, romance, and travel ✨ Character reactions felt more realistic than in many romances I’ve read. The chapters were the right length and switching between the main characters’ POV was well done. Highly recommend! 🥰🏖️ Thank you very much for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

Content warnings: Explicit language, explicit (and consensual) sex scenes, childhood emotional neglect, parental death (heart attack) and grief, discussion of car accident death, toxic relationships, mention of marriage separation, infidelity, and divorce (not main characters), alcohol and marijuana consumption

🌴 Love Was Worth the Wait 🩵
⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spice: 3/5

Sometimes you pick up a book simply looking for a fun romance, and it ends up becoming exactly the escape you didn't know you needed. Backspin was that kind of read for me. Filled with sunshine, second chances, years of quiet longing, and enough forced proximity to keep the chemistry simmering, this was such an enjoyable romance from beginning to end.

Asher Hayes completely won me over. He's thoughtful, patient, attentive, and one of those heroes who quietly shows his love through his actions rather than grand gestures. The fact that he'd carried feelings for Angie for years—and even had a secret tattoo inspired by her—made every interaction between them feel even sweeter. He waited until he knew how she truly felt before acting on his own feelings, and that patience made him an easy addition to my growing list of favorite book boyfriends.

Angie was equally easy to root for. She's adventurous, independent, and surrounded by a wonderful group of friends who made the story feel even more realistic. I loved watching her slowly realize that the boy next door she'd never truly gotten over had grown into exactly the man she'd always needed.

The fake dating, childhood friends-to-lovers, brother's best friend, and one-bed tropes blended together effortlessly. Their chemistry never felt forced because it was built on years of history, making every stolen glance, every lingering touch, and every moment of unresolved tension feel believable. Allison Rayne also has a wonderful way of describing each setting. I genuinely felt like I was right there alongside Angie and Asher, soaking up the Caribbean sunshine while falling in love with these characters.

While I would have loved a little more exploration of Asher's emotional journey and maybe just a few more chapters with this couple, those were very minor thoughts in what was otherwise such a heartwarming, feel-good romance.

If you're looking for a romance that delivers butterflies, beautiful scenery, genuine emotional connection, and one of the sweetest heroes you'll read this year, Backspin is absolutely worth adding to your TBR.

Thank you so much to Allison Rayne for trusting me with an ARC of Backspin. It was such a fun, heartfelt escape, and I'm already looking forward to spending more time in this world.

I want to thank the author for allowing me to have a advanced reader copy. It’s been a lot of fun reading about Archer and Angie. This book is in a series. I only read this book as a standalone so I want you to keep that in mind as I write this review.

You start out with both of these characters seemingly in London for a trip you get the dual point of view. And they finally see each other after so many years now here’s the fun part. They both don’t know. They had major crushes on each other because of the nature of their friendship. Archer is the brother‘s best friend. Angie felt a massive hurt when he left for college and never quite filled the void of her first love.

Now jump forward and day go on vacation together because archer gets himself in this situation where he makes it seem like Angie is his girlfriend and he’s developing a whole new travel package. Angie agrees because she had the time and thought it would be fun now they’re on this romantic vacation in the honeymoon suite and they dance around each other. Honestly, I thought this would be the biggest day for a little while, and then they finally gave in.

This read was a very quick read. I did hit a point where I wanted more from the characters. I felt like there was something missing. I liked their friendship, but I felt like there was more to it that I wasn’t getting from the page,. Because we have a male main character who has a whole tattoo to represent this girl that he never was able to be with for years and we have a girl that was pining for him for years. It almost feels like there’s some stuff that wasn’t flushed out for me. Overall, they’re good characters and I saw where else the author could go. She did really well from what I understand. You can only go up from here because these characters are great. I’m just seeing more in the depth that they could have cause I wanted more from them.

I have to say I loved your twist at the end. It felt like a good tie up of how they both were feeling about the brother approving the relationship.

Overall, a good book to read in a great beach Reed. I’m very fortunate to be able to read this first hand and early. I cannot wait to see her other work come out.

The book started off strong for me. I was immediately interested in the premise, invested in the characters, and excited to see where Asher and Angie’s relationship would go. Their chemistry was easy to feel, and I enjoyed the fun, lighthearted energy between them.

Where the story started to lose me a little was around the halfway point. I felt like the plot slowed down and the characters didn’t grow. A lot of time was spent with them questioning their feelings and repeating similar internal thoughts, and after a while, I found myself wishing the story would move forward. Their connection was already clear, so I wanted to see them evolve instead of staying in that uncertainty for so long.

I also felt like there were some missed opportunities with some of the deeper storylines. Without giving too much away, I really enjoyed the reveal involving Wesley and how it showed growth on his part. Because Asher carried so much guilt and hesitation around Wesley’s approval throughout the book, I would have loved to see that relationship explored more. Their dynamic had so much potential, and I think digging deeper into that would have added a lot of emotional depth.

Angie was a fun, bubbly character, and I enjoyed her personality, but I also would have liked to see more layers to her as the story progressed. There were interesting pieces introduced about both characters and their families that I think could have added even more dimension if they had been developed further.

Overall, Backspin was an enjoyable read with a lot of potential. The chemistry was there, the premise was fun, and there were moments I really liked. I just found myself wanting a little more depth and character development to make the emotional moments hit harder.

I think Allison Rayne has created a great foundation, and I’m interested to see how her storytelling continues to grow in future books.

Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me.

While there were a few moments I genuinely enjoyed (the sunshine ring was adorable, and Angie’s mishap afterward had me laughing), I struggled with the overall pacing and character development throughout the story.

My biggest issue was that the romance felt repetitive. After a while, it seemed like Angie and Asher were having the same emotional conversations over and over again in different settings. The story became predictable, and I found myself waiting for the plot to move forward or for the stakes to increase.

There were several moments that had a lot of potential, particularly during the London chapters and later when conflict finally began to emerge. However, many of those scenes felt rushed and were resolved too quickly. I often wished the author had spent more time developing the emotional moments instead of moving on so quickly.

The writing style also felt younger than I expected, making it difficult for me to connect with the characters as adults. While I can see this working for readers who enjoy lighter, Hallmark-style romances with a strong will-they-won’t-they dynamic, I personally wanted more tension, deeper emotional development, and stronger progression in both the relationship and plot.

Overall, I didn’t hate it, but I never found myself fully invested. It wasn’t a bad book, it simply wasn’t the right fit for me as a reader.

First thank you, Allison Rayne for allowing me to be an ARC Reader for this super cute book!

This book is apart of a series that I had no idea about- and glad it could be read as a stand alone. Although after reading it I want to read the others!

Honestly, Asher and Angie’s story hit so many of the feel good buttons. Childhood friendships, that grew into crushes that neither of them knew the other had! Long lost time apart only to find each other again… Their story drew me in so quickly and I was hoping and praying for an amazing ending (which we definitely get.)

I found myself smiling at how cute they were, feeling heart broken when they were hurt, and rooting for them to figure it all out.

The chemistry between them doesn’t feel far fetched it feels very real, it’s almost if you were talking to your best friend about their feelings toward someone else.

This story was heartwarming, sweet and such a breath of fresh air. The energy was amazing. The characters go through all feelings and over thinking that comes with relationships. I feel like a lot of people experience what the characters felt when it comes to finally having true happiness you want and wondering if it’s too good to be true or what you deserve.

This book is such a feel good, down to earth book, and I highly enjoyed it.

I received an arc of backspin and here’s my review!!
Backspin was such a fun and addictive read that pulled me in from the very beginning. Allison Rayne did a great job balancing the romance, tension, and emotional moments in a way that kept me turning pages long after I planned to stop reading.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters and loved watching their relationship develop naturally throughout the story. The banter was entertaining, the emotional moments hit when they needed to, and the sports backdrop added another layer that made the story even more enjoyable.

What stood out most to me was how easy it was to become invested in the characters and their journey. I found myself rooting for them from start to finish and was genuinely sad to see the story end.

If you’re looking for a romance with great chemistry, engaging characters, and plenty of heart, Backspin is definitely worth picking up. I’m looking forward to reading more from Allison Rayne in the future.

I would like to thank Allison Rayne for this Advanced Reader Copy. Backspin was my first book in the series, and it made for a fun weekend read. This book focuses on Angie and Asher’s sweet, breezy romance. It showcases their strong chemistry and witty banter. The book has a good balance of humor and emotion.

The lead characters back-and-forth teasing, especially during practice and in their quieter moments, makes their connection feel genuine. The slow-burn tension keeps the story engaging, and even without any knowledge of pickleball, I still enjoyed the practice scenes that let their chemistry build.

That said, some of the more emotional moments felt a little underdeveloped, especially the scenes where Angie and Asher finally begin to be honest about their feelings and the immediate fallout that follows. and while some parts in the middle felt a bit stretched out, the ending felt rushed. Even so, this book is a worthwhile pick for readers who enjoy sports romances with heart. I enjoyed reading it and especially liked the little twist at the end.

Thank you to the author Allison Rayne for the gifted ARC!

Overall this was a cute read that touches on many feelings couples absolutely encounter during the beginning stages of a new relationship. Some parts fell a little flat for me and the narration for Angie and Asher's inner monologues didn't always differentiate enough to pull me right into the story but I found that improved as I got further in. I really liked that even though I didn't read the first interconnected standalone, you get lots of references to it that are done well and fill in any blanks. The banter is really enjoyable, especially between Angie and Willow when texting.

If you're a fan of friends to lovers, fake marriage, a cute relatable romance with fun travel involved, and a close knit friend group then this is a great option. The yearning really makes you just want things to work out for them. And dang, I really need a man to know me as well as Asher knows Angie🥹

* I rated this book 3.75 stars but bumped it up due to Goodreads not having half star options.

-Childhood Friends to lovers
-Fake Dating
-Best Friend’s Sister
-Forced Proximity

I absolutely loved these characters. They were both extremely relatable and I could feel the tension in the book. I love that they both secretly love each other. I love that he has a secret tattoo for her. The forced proximity and pinning is top tier. I absolutely loved this book! I loved how the writing made you feel like you were part of this book. The emotions were real and raw as well as so beautifully written.

Asher was such a sweet guy. He is caring and attentive. He was so nervous from the beginning and hesitated until he knew how she felt. He was the perfect book boyfriend.

Angie is adventurous and strong. She is also very independent and has the most amazing friend group. She is very outgoing and you can tell just how much she loved Asher.

This was a very good book! Thank you to Allison and the agency for allowing me to read this advanced readers copy!

This book was chefs kiss! The quintessential rom-com and I loved every minute of it. I was fully invested in Angie and Ashers relationship. Not knowing if they would make it with all of the second guessing and fears they had kept me rooting for them. I loved the inclusion of Angie's diary -- it made her feelings more personal and character more relatable.

This was a great beach read and I recommend reading it with no one around so you won't get interrupted.  I can't tell you how many times I told my family to wait a minute because I NEEDED to finish the chapter.

I felt like I was a background character in the book as I read it while onboard the Carnival Sunshine ☀️ (Angies nickname) and while in the Bahamas! So maybe not Antigua but still Carribean 🤣

ARC gifted by @authorallisonrayne

Backspin by Allison Rayne is the perfect book for anyone who needs a little island vacation. This book has the right amount of humor and spice with characters you fall in love with. This was such a great, fun and easy read making me wish for many more chapters, or even another book in the series! It draws you in right from the beginning, giving the reader the “one more chapter“ pull without leaving the reading trying to connect the dots and remember who each of the characters are. Allison Rayne really knows how to write books that vividly describes the setting, leaving the reader feeling as if they have been where the book takes place.

I was a little worried starting this book about Pickleball being a key component of the characters hobbies because I have never played pickleball myself. But Allison Rayne made the game easy to understand, and gave me the desire to learn to play.

Highly recommend not only this book but Allison Rayne as an author. Add her other book, Get Pickled, (and future books) to your To Be Read list ASAP!

After working for a pickleball-obsessed boss for several years, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on an ARC for this pickleball romcom. I did not read the first book in this series, so do bear that in mind as I write this review. This was the perfect childhood friends to lovers/brother’s best friend vacation getaway read. I loved the Caribbean vacation energy, and seeing Angie and Asher slowly but surely figure their relationship out. The throwback diary entries were the perfect way to infuse some of Angie and Asher’s history into the story without going full dual timeline. I appreciated that they both had their own trauma to deal with, although did feel like we got a bit short-changed on Asher’s side of things.

Thank you to author Allison Rayne for the ARC

Backspin completely swept me away. From the very first chapter, I was hooked on Angie and Asher’s story. Their chemistry was undeniable, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way.
What I loved most was how real their relationship felt.
The banter, the tension, the emotional moments-everything came together perfectly. Asher quickly became one of those book boyfriends you can't help but fall for, and Angie was such a strong, relatable character.
This book gave me all the butterflies, all the feels, and left me smiling long after I turned the final page. If you're looking for a romance with heart, chemistry, and characters you'll be thinking about long after you finish, add this one to your TBR!

Backspin by Allison Rayne was everything I wanted in a romance! I loved the combination of fake newlyweds and long lost friends turned lovers, and the chemistry between Asher and Angie was impossible to resist. Their banter was fun and natural, but what really stood out was the genuine connection they shared beneath it all.

I also appreciated how the story incorporated everyday life challenges and relationship struggles, making their journey feel realistic and relatable. Watching them navigate those obstacles while finding their way back to each other had me completely invested. I couldn't put the book down!! Spicy, emotional, and full of heart, Backspin was a fantastic read from start to finish!!💜💙

REVIEW OF ADVANCED COPY

I have mixed feelings on this book if I’m being honest. I love the premise, that absolutely hooked me. I am a pure sucker for the forbidden love of the best friend to the bro/sis. Asher and Angie gel really well and their dialogue isn’t stunted over the feels like I’ve seen with other characters in this trope. It felt natural.

However, somewhere between going home and getting that forwarded text, their romantic relationship didn’t feel flushed out enough for that reaction. I wish there was more shared about their feelings and moments over the years.

I must say tho, Wes? Good on ya. Best part though in my honest opinion was that great little reveal at the end. Actually, very, very sweet little bow on top.

I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

This was my first ARC from this author and it didn’t disappoint. The story telling had me walking through each emotion like I was in the story myself, I laughed out loud and found myself getting emotional as the main characters found themselves throughout the story.

I couldn’t put it down and found myself looking to read at any opportunity. Waiting for dinner to be done? Reading, 5 minute wait for an appointment? Reading. Family’s watching a movie? I was reading under the covers!

The tension had me giggling like a middle schooler with a crush. I finished this and instantly searched for more of Allisons books online!

I received this as an ARC.

It was the book I needed to read right now. It has traveling, pickleball, and childhood friends to lovers. It was an easy read. Made me want to keep reading it to find out what happens. I kept thinking about Ash and Angie even when I wasn't reading the book.
It has some twists and turns, kept me on my toes wanting to find out what would happen to them. I really like the strong friendship she had with Willow and how it was a really relatable story, plus the spice level to me was 🌶🌶/5.
If you like low spice, relatable relationships, childhood friendships to lovers this is the book for you.

I received an ARC of Back Spin from the author Allison Rayne and really enjoyed the core concept. Asher and Angie have an adorable backstory, and this author can really write fantastic spicy scenes 🥵! The ending twist regarding the signs from Angie's dad was also a beautiful touch.

My main critique is that the book felt a bit over-explained and would have benefited from tighter editing to trim the word count and speed up the pacing. Because of the dialogue and internal monologues, the characters also felt a bit younger than their actual ages.

That being said, there is a ton of potential here, and I look forward to reading more from Allisonn Rayne as she continues to evolve as an author.

Backspin is the absolute ultimate fake-dating, childhood-crush rom-com! The story follows Angie and her brother’s best friend, Asher, who reunite after ten years. To save his job, Asher accidentally lets his boss believe Angie is his girlfriend, which lands them on a ten-day Caribbean resort vacation to test a pickleball package. The history and nostalgia between Angie and Asher run so deep, making their banter electric and the slow-burn, forced-proximity tension completely addictive. Add it to your TBR right now!

I was lucky enough to read both books in this series and I have really enjoyed both.

It was great to see Angie and Asher find each other and figure out how to love each other after so many years apart and some bumps along the way.

Loved the scene setting

Kept me happily on edge and frustrated to watch them fumble along waiting for them to finally get themselves together

I wasn’t quite sure how I would like this book because I’m not particularly into pickleball, but the cover was just soooo darn cute! I was also intrigued by The blurb.

Angie is finding her way in the world after deciding to quit her job and go on what will become a life changing trip where she reunited with her childhood crush Asher. The old feelings all come reeling back!

I’m a sucker for second chances and a pining MMC.

Backspin pulls you into the story from the very beginning. You are stepping through the characters’ days with them. The reunion, the loss and grief, the adventure, the growth, the love… everything is written so well and to absolute perfection. This is a beautiful story that I will be recommending to everyone until I’m out of breath.

I received this book as an ARC, and I'm leaving an honest review voluntarily.

I'm finding it difficult to explain what I felt about this book. It was good. Just lacked some depth for me. I found myself being frustrated by the lack of emotional intelligence by the main characters, BUT they are young! So there's that to consider. It's not a bad book....just wanted more emotions and chemistry with these two. Friendship and love were certainly there with them! That was obvious. 😊
