"The books are particularly wild tonight, can you tell?"Rainy March (yes, that is her real name) is a book witch - the third generation in her family to work such a prestigious job!
As one could expect, with her line of work there are some pretty unbending rules - namely to keep the book witches from losing their sense of self as they weave in and out of fiction but also to prevent them from accidently (or deliberately) altering stories.
"If you're afraid to read a book it's probably because you know it has something to say to you that you don't want to hear."
And could anyone blame the Duke for falling in love with the fiercely independent and strong-willed book witch?
"The fictional characters we love stamp their names on our hearts."
Whew! This one was a bit rough for me in the beginning but it turned around beautifully! So if you are debating if you should keep going - I would highly encourage you to trust the process!
"All stories are love stories if you love stories."
all stories are love stories if you love stories.
Despite her youth, twenty-five-year-old Rainy March has been a book witch for more than a decade. She follows all the rules of the profession seriously, including the one about ensuring that fictional characters and the real world do not intersect. But when she is sent on assignment into the book series starring the Duke of Chicago, her favourite book character, she forgets all the rules and ends up in a relationship with him. When this is discovered by the head witch, Rainy is forbidden from interacting with the fictional character on the threat of expulsion from the coven. But two years later, when Rainy faces a life-changing mystery, she can think of no one other than the Duke to help her out. Their secret quest takes them through several book classics, but can they resolve the mystery without Rainy being penalised?
The story comes to us mostly in Rainy’s first-person perspective.
“That’s why I love you, Rainy March. Because when I’m with you, I’m real.”
“You're my favourite story.”
“Immortatlity is overrated. I'd far rather be able to grow old.”
“Really? Why?”
“If I can't grow old, I can't grow old with you.”
