pregnant and rejected mate of the Lucan king review

Oof. This was hard to rate. The story was there and good. I enjoyed it. However, I can’t get passed a few things. The title most obviously… she’s not pregnant in any point of this story so why is it “pregnant and rejected”? It’s a long enough title, one could just chop pregnant right off and not bat an eye. Back to the story, I love love LOVE a woman who finds her strength kind of story, and so I was really excited over the general premise of this book. All the teasers I found were giving “the villain does it better” and oh so much drama and intrigue, if only the first thing in the book was an interlude telling me literally the whole story. I’m not a “read the last page to decide if I’m into it” kind of girl so I was pretty disappointed at that. I’m sick and just wanted some werewolf smut so I continued. I would probably still read something else from this author but I’ll be hoping for some sexy time growth. It wasn’t “watery bowels” (iykyk) but her p-y was definitely “whispering secrets only I could hear”. 🧐

Ignore the cover and the title and you’ll be just fine, because this shifter romance ended up being surprisingly sweet. I honestly read this book by accident. I’m notorious for downloading a book just to finish a blurb and then deciding whether to bail… this time, I didn’t. The blurb basically is the opening of the book, and it hooked me in.

First, some housekeeping, despite what the title implies, Skylar is not pregnant at any point in this book, not even in the epilogue. The story starts with her being three days postpartum after a C‑section, with her newborn daughter Lily and her 8yr old son, Alex. Skylar is human, not a shifter, and there are no “Lycan kings” here, just alphas, so the title is wildly inaccurate. Truly, ignore it. Nothing about it applies. 😂

Small spoilers ahead -

Skylar starts off as the conditioned, obedient Luna while her alpha husband Maxon is cheating with multiple woman. Once she finally admits the truth to herself, she doesn’t just leave she exposes everything. She reveals Maxon’s secret's, proves he’s unfit to lead, and the pack turns on him. Cue revenge, escape, and a barely made it out alive flight into rival pack territory, where Julian Maxon’s enemy realizes Skylar is his fated mate and rescues her and the kids.

Julian was a highlight. He’s patient, steady, and genuinely kind, especially knowing Skylar was manipulated by a fake bond before. There’s a five‑month time jump that initially annoyed me, but it worked it let their relationship develop naturally. Julian courts her quietly, helps with the kids, and treats them as his own. When Maxon resurfaces looking for revenge, Skylar becomes a real asset because while she was treated like a shadow, she was listening, learning, and calculating all along.

There’s some drama (kidnapping, rescue, mate bond), but what I loved most was the love. This was a cozy, emotional shifter romance with good characters, a solid FMC, and a genuinely sweet MMC. Yes, some world building didn’t quite make sense especially why Skylar was “special” but I chose to roll with it. Overall, a nice little shifter romance that deserved a much better cover and title.

why if this wasn’t the cutest thing I’ve read so far…

This genre rarely ever does tender often opting for angst with a very weak payoff. That’s what made this story particularly special. Julian and Skylar did tender very well. This was a second chance at love that delivered satisfaction in spades. It’s such breath of fresh air to read a story not following the formula of rejection to weak grovel to undeserved HEA. I freaking love when a story ends up with a new, unsullied hero and Julian was the very essence of proper and possessive. I was a big fan how he loved Skylar. Slow, steady, and stable. Something she lacked in her previous relationship.

Skylar herself was such a catch, personality and all. She balanced out Julian’s pragmatism and not in the obnoxious “look at me I’m so quirky” type of way that a lot of the heroines tend to be in this entire series(genre). Loved her from beginning to end and wished there were more heroines with Skylar’s temperament and maturity. She says what she means and she means what she says. A trait absent in much of the heroines in this genre unfortunately.

3.5⭐️ Generously rounded up for the rating. I loved how the FMC was so strong for her children when she left her controlling manipulative cheating husband. 3 days postpartum!!

Then she ran to his rival pack…the only safe place where he wouldn’t come after her. And there she found Julian who was just what she needed. Quiet confident supportive love. He loved her without asking anything in return. He was her friend, helped with her children, helped bring her back to life just by being there for each other.

Their actual intimate scenes sometimes were hard to stomach…just because it wasn’t my thing. She got all bossy and dirty mouthed and wanted to be in control and I didn’t like that, but maybe someone else does…

There were also gaps and choppy parts, but over all Julian was incredible and her son, Alex, was such a great kid. You couldn’t help but enjoy the book and root for them.

“I don’t trust my own judgment anymore. That’s the part nobody talks about. After a relationship with a liar, you don’t just lose trust in other people. You lose trust in yourself.”

Another one...I clearly have a problem 3.5

Another book with an unfortunate title that hides a decent story underneath. Only...this time, the title is inaccurate AF. She wasn't pregnant at all during the book. It starts with her baby being 3 days old so I'm confused why the first two words haven't been deleted from the title.

Anyway, well written, lovable characters. The vindictive side would live to see her ex and his lovers raked over the coals and lose everything. Just throwing that out into the universe 😈

Keeping It Simple...

This is, without a doubt, my favorite book in this series so far. Better than that, Julian Ravencrest is my favorite Lycan King and Skylar is my favorite heroine... bent, but nowhere near broken. The sorry was awesome, the banter totally enjoyable, and the humor priceless.

Absolutely well done!!
