She’s the local barista, he’s the new chef in town.
Kelsey Rivers has spent her life in the shadow of the Teton Mountains in her small Wyoming town. Between the constant flow of tourists and seasonal workers, she’s used to people not sticking around. What more could she need besides her best friend and fellow barista, her dog, and an unlimited supply of espresso shots?
That is until a tattooed chef, with charming good looks and an even more charming personality, sits down next to her at the local bar. Kelsey can’t remember the last time anyone made her smile, let alone laugh the way he does.
Opening a new restaurant in the trendy Wyoming town was only supposed to be a stopover on Sutton Sterling’s way to more culinary accolades, following in his older brother’s footsteps. From small town Sterling Springs, New Mexico to hotshot chef, who takes nothing seriously except what ends up on his menus, there’s one recipe he can’t figure out.
What did Sutton do wrong two years ago when he met the local girl with the hard-to-earn smile, on his first night in town? No matter how hard he tries, she continues to maintain this one-sided grudge.
A “stolen” car, a landslide, a lot of gelato, two furry sidekicks, and a shared love of reality TV keep bringing these two together. Will they take the hint and finally do something for themselves… SOMETHING SELFISH?
I’m an avid skier and traveler from Ohio. When I’m not writing, you can find me enjoying time outside, ideally in the mountains with my partner and our fur babies. The joy of getting in a car and driving across the country to explore is unmatched, and also a great time to check off the romance novels from my never ending TBR… and who doesn’t love that?
Dakota Forest has been cooking up something delicious (and spicy!). This is the first book in the Sterling Springs series, but it stands perfectly on its own. Whether you are coming for the spice, the cozy setting, or the absolute sweetness of the pet sidekicks, this is a delightful romance that hits every mark.
Before reading this book, I was almost at the absolute brink of Chef male character burnout. But, I thought I had seen every iteration of this trope, but Something Selfish was such a cute surprise. Instead of feeling played out, this second-chance romance was heartwarming, spicy, and exactly the light-hearted upper I needed after a slew of heavy-themed reads.
Dakota Forest knows how to create tension that simmers. From moments that made me smile, laugh, and say “ooh!” to some of the banter, to the actual burning forced proximity moments. She has a fun, conversational writing style that makes the story flow effortlessly. It was genuinely sweet to see how obsessed Kelsey and Sutton were for each other. If you love a down-bad chef MMC who's love language is food, cooking delectable meals for those he loves, and the utmost sense of caretaking, you'll love Sutton.
The atmosphere reminded me of several other books. It captures the cozy small town romance and chef elements with Maddie and James, as seen in In Your Dreams by Sarah Adams, and shares that deeper, second-chance romance feel from It’s Different This Time by Joss Richard. If you enjoyed the journey of rediscovering happiness with a Chef MMC in Charlie Quinn Let's Go by Jamie Varon, or the high-stakes second chance energy in Love Overboard by Kandi Steiner, this story will be right up your alley.
If you love dogs, this book will completely win you over. Felix the German Shepherd absolutely stole the show for me! His scenes were so heartwarming and added such a sweet layer to the romance. It almost felt like meta-commentary that the female main character, Kelsey, acted like an aloof black cat, and in contrast, the male main character, Sutton, had a literal black cat.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration was wonderful. The female narrator is fantastic, and even at an increased listening speed of above 2x, her voice remains clear and captures a wide range of emotion. While I personally wish it was duet-style, this dual POV format was still very well-executed and super easy to follow.
If you're looking for a second-chance romance with a “no one but you” type of vibe, including spice and a lot of heart, definitely pick this one up.
Perfect if you love: ✨️ Small-town atmosphere ❤️ Second-chance romance with spice 🐈⬛️ Black Cat and Golden Retriever dynamic 🐾 Literal black cat and German Shepherd pets (the cutest) 👨🏼🍳 A down-bad Chef MMC 🍽 Food and caretaking are his love language ☕️ Barista FMC ✨️ Forced proximity ❤️ Flirty banter ✨️ Dual POV

Thank you to Luna Literary Management and the author, Dakota Forest, for providing an advanced listener copy for review consideration. I am writing this review voluntarily. These are my honest opinions.
One of my absolute favorite audios I’ve listened to this year and I can’t recommend adding it to your TBR list enough if you love the following tropes:
🍦 small town romance 🍦 second chance romance 🍦 black cat x golden retriever 🍦 he falls first 🍦 chef x barista 🍦 banter GALORE
Kelsey is the black cat FMC of my dreams and Sutton is a chef AND a mechanic who is the definition of “if he wanted to, he would”! Name a better combo?!
I loved the second chance romance here and the flashbacks to their night together in the past were so good. The way the story unraveled and we got to learn what happened in the past was absolute perfection. I never wanted to stop reading!
🎙️ Narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan in dual style. I truly cannot recommend this audiobook enough. Vanessa & Jacob depicted each character so perfectly! I was swooning, cackling and sweating 🥵.
The way I am gnawing at the bars of my enclosure for Sly’s book. I am already so down bad for him and his slutty little shorts!
Thank you so much to the author, Luna Literary Management and Must Love Audio for the ALC!
I loved "Something Selfish" by Dakota Forest. Something about it really did it for me! I loved the characters, I loved the setting, I loved the drama, I loved the self-discovery, I loved the spice, I loved the yearning, and I LOVED the dual audiobook narration by Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin. I fell for Sutton and Kelsey's story from the very first chapter. They spent one amazing night together years ago, only for it to end abruptly without a reason why. About two years later, he is a chef at the new super popular restaurant in their small town (which his brother owns), and she is a barista at the same place her and her best friend's grandmothers worked when she was alive. Though they see each other around town, Kelsey does her darndest to avoid Sutton like the plague. The banter between the two of them is top-notch! I laughed on more than one occasion while reading this because their bickering was so freaking funny and witty. I adored Sutton as a book boyfriend. He's a real yearner, that's for sure. He's the chef at his brother's restaurant, and he is trying to create a dessert that tastes the way Kelsey smells because he is obsessed with her??? Pardon???? My god, he is a down bad golden retriever. He has been smitten with Kelsey since the very first night they met. He's funny, charming, helpful, and so, so sexy. Kelsey is also a wonderful character. I love how grumpy she is! She's got a lot to be mad about because she thinks Sutton knew something that hurt her deeply. She's clearly equally obsessed with Sutton despite trying to stay away from him for the last two years, but she won't let him see it or know it, which leads to quite a bit of pining and longing. They bicker and banter and swipe at each other until it all comes to a delicious (literally!!) head. Yes, there is some miscommunication in this story, but to me, it works within the context of what's going on, so it didn't feel like it grinded the story to a screeching halt. As I said, the spice is...... so good?!?! Throw in a little "yes, chef" and you've got a recipe for success. I loved this one, and I can't wait for the next installment in this series!
Thank you to Luna Literary and Dakota Forest for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
This is absolutely Dakota Forest’s best story to date! I will go to bat every single time for Tanner from Full Send as one of my favorite book boyfriends… but Sutton is COMING FOR YOU! He’s so stinking cute, obsessed, caring and literal perfection in a book MMC. *sigggghhhhhhhhh* Where is this man in real life?! Kelsey is the perfect dark cloud to Sutton’s cheery sun, but at the same time is someone who feels deeply and passionately. We’re not sure what happened after our two MCs initially meet… there is so much insane chemistry from the jump, but something seems to have gone wrong. Smash cut to two years later, and Sutton is just as dreamy as ever and in desperate need to figure out why Kelsey seems to resent him. So much yearnin’ and burnin’, strife, and Sutton’s hero complex, and I ate it all up and left absolutely zero crumbs. It’s been such a treat to be a part of Dakota’s journey with this story and I cannot WAIT for it to be out!
What I Loved About This Story: ✨Down bad, golden retriever MMC ✨Grumpy goose FMC (and he loves it) ✨The most goodest of fur baby sidekicks ✨So much “yes chef” that I was SALIVATING
What I Loved About This Audiobook: ✨Dual narration where the vocal talent are FLAWLESS at the various voices ✨Jacob Morgan is PERFECTION… but definitely don’t be sleeping on Vanessa Edwin. She is similarly PERFECT.
I received an Advanced Listener Copy of this book via the author, but my review is all my own.
DNF @20% I couldn’t get into this. I rlly didn’t like her vibe and how she was so cocky towards him - with no explanation either - even when he was acting completely harmless. I hate mean girl energy I’m sorry.
Am I high???? Is this a joke??? I do not think I have ever hated an FMC more literally wtaf is wrong with her??? And why does he like her she is so nasty and legitimately psychotic. She overhears like 12 seconds of a conversation and instead of talking to him about it like a grown up, she literally returns the rental car and just leaves??? I actually feel like I’m going insane. The amount of groveling she would have needed to do for me to even be willing to be in the same room with her again would need its own book. This is after she sleeps with him then ghosts him and treats him like shit for two years because his brother bought a house that was for sale and somehow he didn’t divine from the beyond that the house used to be her grandma’s. Mind you while she’s still actively treating him poorly, he drives her car 10 hours to be fixed and basically gives her his car indefinitely. I don’t think she does one single nice thing for him throughout the course of this book, like he just gives and she just takes, it’s insanely unbalanced and unpleasant to read.
She is the biggest piece of shit I am actually losing my mind like she is a genuinely bad, immature person
And honestly all of this I could get past if she was held even a little bit accountable!!!! But she isn’t!! She is not once called out for the shitty things she does and its infuriating.
When she’s like “I have to learn to be selfish” or whatever I had to laugh at the audacity because it’s like girl do not worry you have the covered
Gave this book a shot because I adore the audiobook narrators but I am never reading this author again which is a shame because some of the book was decent but the lack of emotional intelligence of the characters is ridiculous. I am actually seething that I wasted an audible credit on this. Not even Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin can make this palatable.
I freaking loved this small town romance set in Wyoming! The chemistry between Sutton and Kelsey is perfect, the vibes are flirty, sweet and spicy. Character depth and development were spot on. I'm a stickler for vivid descriptions. I want to be completely captivated and Dakota *does not miss* a step. I also appreciated the flashbacks between Sutton and Kelsey to get little glimpses into their past interactions.
I am looking forward to book two! I would absolutely recommend this book, especially the audiobook. I received an ALC from the author. All opinions are my own.
Audiobook 4.5 ⭐ Both narrators were excellent 👌
Dog mom Cat Dad Family loyalty Second chance Tattooed MMC Opposites attract
Thank you to Dakota Forest and Luna Literary Management for the opportunity to listen to the ALC of Something Selfish.
This was my first book by Dakota Forest, and I’m happy to say it was a delight. A sweet small-town romance between a black cat barista and a golden retriever chef, this story is perfect if you love:
* Small-town romance * Strangers to (one-sided) enemies to lovers * Black cat x golden retriever * Flashbacks * Secret tattoo * A little chaos (yes… including 💦 in his pants) * Cute animals
The story follows Kelsey, who loves her life in Jackson, WY, but is struggling to afford staying there. Sutton, a professional chef, comes to town to open a restaurant. After one very hot night together, a misunderstanding drives them apart for two years.
I’ll be honest—the miscommunication trope didn’t fully work for me, especially since it happens more than once, which is why I landed at four stars. I also didn’t always agree with Kelsey’s choices, but I never fully disliked her. Sutton, on the other hand, has been completely down bad for Kelsey from the start and never wavers, even while she ignores him for two years. The instalove wasn’t my favorite either, but it didn’t take me out of the story.
Once they find their way back to each other, the conflict settles quite a bit. The central struggle—both characters having a hard time putting themselves first—felt like it could’ve been explored with a bit more depth. That said, if you’re looking for something warm, comforting, and feel-good, this absolutely delivers. And if you’re here for the spice, don’t worry—there are plenty of steamy moments 🔥
Now let’s talk about the audiobook. It’s narrated by two of the best in the business: Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan, and they truly elevate the story.
Vanessa has a gift for making every character she portrays feel relatable and layered. Even when I didn’t agree with Kelsey’s decisions, I still felt connected to her, largely because of Vanessa’s performance.
And Jacob Morgan… does what he always does best. Sutton is the ultimate green flag—the goldenest of golden retrievers—and Jacob brings all of his charm, warmth, and sincerity to the role. His performance is natural, engaging, and impossible not to fall in love with.
If you’re trying to decide between reading or listening, I highly recommend the audiobook—these narrators really bring the story to life.
I fear Dakota Forest never disappoints, and this is now my favorite book by her!!! I am OBSESSED with Sutton, I mean that guy literally never gave up for 2 years and just kept hanging on for his chance with her again. And honestly? Him having a cat made me swoon even harder because HELLO?!?!? hot chef, and a cat dad??!! HOT.
Kelsey spent the last 2 years avoiding local chef, Sutton after their lovely night together while Sutton was doing anything and everything to pull her back in and know what went wrong. From the beginning of the book, you can tell right away- Sutton is a golden retriever, gentle, open to anything while Kelsey is more closed off, a 'shadow' as Sutton calls it. (iykyk)
Once they started speaking again, you could tell the chemistry was there right away. Kelsey and Sutton fit together so perfectly, her being stubborn and independent not wanting any help and Sutton being right there giving help even though she tries to reject it. Kelsey tries to deal with her problems alone, not wanting to be a burden but Sutton has a heart of gold and was truly trying to do anything and everything to try and make her life a little easier. In return, Sutton has a hard time saying no especially to his family so Kelsey was there to try to help navigate his 'hero complex' as she calls it, so he wasn't constantly bending over backwards and overworking himself to exhaustion.
The miscommunication from their night 2 years ago that caused them to not be together until now seemed so silly, and could have easily been avoided by just a conversation (which later literally was) but I understand it part of the plot. Kelsey genuinely just needed to communicate and not jump to conclusions, but *she is just a girl* haha.
I need the next book NOW!!! Thank you Dakota Forest for the eARC and allowing me to read it early!
"Something Selfish" has cemented itself as my favorite Dakota book. Sutton and Kelsey (along with Felix & Oscar) were just so much fun! The banter, the s€xual tension, that invisible string that kept them tied to each other for two years.
When they initially meet their chemistry is instant. Sutton is the golden retriever sunshine to Kelsey's black cat storm cloud. While Kelsey is more subdued with her attraction, Sutton is the epitome of down bad boy obsessed and I was here for every second of it. Add in the fact that he's an incredibly talented chef that loves to feed people and you have book boyfriend perfection.
But something happens that causes Kelsey to ghost him and we don't find out what happened until further into the book through some well timed flashbacks. In the present, Sutton is full of yearning and determined to find out what went wrong. Watching him work to earn her trust and time melted me into an ooey gooey puddle. Thanks to some gentle shoves from her best friend, Kelsey realizes pretty quickly that they are perfect for each other, and she would be bat shit crazy to let him go!
The gelato 👀... Who knew gelato could be so damn hot! These two were delicious and not afraid to speak their filthy minds! Seriously just top notch *chef's kiss* spiciness!
I was so lucky to also get the ALC and I'm so glad I did! Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan were incredible! They are two of my favorites and had me laughing, drooling, and fanning myself! I honestly can't wait to listen again!
I am so happy to be back in Dakota's world and cannot wait to see what incredible stories she's going to give us!

I really wanted to like this book. For the most part I was planning to go with 3 stars because for some reason I like Dakota and wish her books well and I thought maybe my mood is the problem here but… I paused this read, finished some other books, came back to this one and I’m sorry but no, what even was that 😭
If you take individual paragraphs or even random chapters, the writing is good. The problem is it’s not working as a whole. It was somehow low drama but overly dramatic. Zero logical sense in anything. What was the plot line - I couldn’t tell you. Time jumps and location jumps that made me confused. Even though I read books 2 and 3 of the previous series and I knew most of the characters, I was still lost at times.
Miscommunication AND third act breakup. Although was it a breakup or now? I don’t know, pure confusion and lack of any logical sense, I’m telling you.
Spice for the sake of spice.
Kelsey acted so childish at times and it made zero sense why Sutton was so hung up on her. I didn’t feel the connection between them at all. All I felt was frustration at how bad the overall plot execution was and I kept asking “why?”, “why?”, “whyyyy???” without the moment of “oh, that’s why!”.
Have I gotten a different copy of the book than people writing glowing reviews? I really don’t understand. I get that reading is subjective, but this book truly lacked any structure. It was like a TV series with a 100 episodes, that used to play Mondays at 7 or 8p.m. back in 2010 or sth.
I’m sorry Dakota but that book was really not it. I enjoyed Fall Apart and Fresh Tracks but I have no idea what Something Selfish was supposed to be. Maybe a link between series? I don’t know. Once again I don’t think it’s a me problem because my ratings lately have been all over the place, from 2 to 5 so it’s not like I’m in some kind of bad ratings slump.
The audio is what got me through this read but it was still a big struggle. Narrated by Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin. Audio duration: 10h44min I listened mostly with 2.0-2.5x speed but it was still way too long considering how nothing was interesting about this story 😔
Sometimes I wish I was not doing my reviews honestly cause it pains me to give 2 stars for an ARC and to an author I root for but I it wasn’t good for more than 2, I’m sorry.
Something Selfish by Dakota Forest was a cute, easy read with a lot to enjoy, even if it didn’t completely reinvent the wheel.
The writing style was really smooth and easy to get into which made it a quick read. I’m always a fan of a dual POV, and it worked well here, getting insight into both characters added depth and kept me engaged throughout.
Also, any book that includes a dog is instantly going to win points from me and Felix was such a lovely addition. I appreciated how he wasn’t just a background character but was consistently woven into the story, it made everything feel more wholesome.
The romance itself was sweet and we got a classic golden retriever MMC. The spice was very well written: balanced, natural and added to the chemistry rather than feeling forced.
That said, the plot was quite predictable and didn’t feel particularly groundbreaking. It’s definitely more of a comfort, cosy read than something that will completely surprise you.
One small thing that stood out to me was a line where Sutton mentions his sister “really liking” the man she’s about to marry… which felt a bit odd. At that stage, “love” feels like the more fitting word, so that moment pulled me out slightly.
Overall, this was a fun, enjoyable read that I’d recommend if you’re looking for something light, romantic and easy to get through.
The audiobook for Something Selfish was such a fun surprise for me—this was my first time reading Dakota Forest, and I’m genuinely impressed. This small town romance hits that sweet spot of banter, chemistry, and emotional backstory, with Sutton and Kelsey’s shared history unfolding through flashbacks that add depth and just the right amount of tension. Watching where things went wrong between them was equal parts frustrating and illuminating in that “please just communicate already” kind of way, but in the best, most addictive sense. Their dynamic is classic opposites attract: Sutton brings golden retriever energy in full force, while Kelsey is more guarded and reserved, and together they just work.
On audio, Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan both deliver strong, engaging performances that really bring the story to life. Edwin, especially, shines with her emotional nuance and consistency, she’s always such a standout in romance narration. Morgan’s performance also captures Sutton’s charm and warmth well, making their dual POV easy to sink into. Overall, this was a really enjoyable listening experience, and knowing it’s the start of a series has me excited to keep going.
ALC Review: Book 1 of the Sterling Springs series all interconnected but they can be read as standalones. Narrated by Jacob Morgan & Vanessa Edwin
4 ⭐️ Kelsey a guarded barista who use to everyone leaving her once she gets close to them & Sutton a chef who is always trying to help and doesn’t take a break and put what he wants first, an also doesn’t understand why Kelsey keeps pushing him away. Kelsey & Sutton shared an amazing night together and, then Kelsey ghosted him and Sutton spent the last 2 years trying to figure out what he did or what went wrong. The chemistry between them is undeniable, with some spicy moments..(Ice cream 🤭)
Thank you Dakota Forest and Luna Literary for the ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Coffeeshop barista & dog mom Kelsey loves living in the shadows of the Teton Mountains in her Wyoming small town.
Catering mostly to tourists, she’s used to no one sticking around for too long.
But when tattooed chef Sutton moves to town to open a new restaurant, they hit it off immediately.
As Kelsey keeps her guard up so she doesn’t get hurt, Sutton is determined to win her over one scoop of gelato at a time.
What to expect: ⛰️ Small town 🍨 Dual POV & timeline ⛰️ Black cat x golden retriever 🍨 Spice ⛰️ He falls first
Thoughts: This was cute. I love a good golden retriever MMC.
Another super sweet read by Dakota! I loved that this connected back with some people we have seen in her previous books but also felt very new and fresh. The romance scenes are always top notch and our MMC was such a sweetie pie. This was a story of second chance and silly miscommunication (or honestly lack there of) yet our boy was just a tasty dreamboat the whole way through. Honestly I think the pets may have had a starring role in this story as well!
It’s fast paced, steamy at the appropriate times, and may make you hungry… for cereal lol. I received an early copy of this book from the author and am grateful to have the opportunity!
Kelsey and Sutton met on a night out. They had a one-night stand and talked about going on a date. Said date never happened - fast forward 2 years Kelsey hates his guts, Sutton still doesn’t know what he did to piss her off and make her ghost him, but he can’t move on.
Nothing beats a cozy small-town romance Super sweet and cheesy with a side of SPICE 🥵 I love pistachio ice cream dowwn and now this book has given me ideas 👀
Kelsey was truly the queen of getting in her own way. I wanted to knock her out sometimes 😂 the man is not a mind reader!! But I understood why she self-sabotaged, she truly didn’t feel like she deserved to be chosen.
Sutton was the perfect Golden Retriever mmc.. He fit perfectly with Kelsey’s black cat vibes.
He was sweet, kind, thoughtful, funny, goofy, and everything good. With a filthy mind and a filthy mouth and hoochie daddy shorts.
I’ll take 14 of him please
Would I Recommend? Absolutely
Tropes: small town, second chance-ish, grumpy x sunshine vibes, ice cream play (🤭), dog mom x cat daddy
Something Selfish by Dakota Forest is a sweet small town romance with a feisty FMC, Kelsey and golden retriever MMC, Sutton. Once the miscommunication trope is resolved their slow burn romance takes off. This was a fun quick read with a HEA.

~ plot ~
In small town Wyoming - the place she calls home, Kelsey Rivers lives a simple life. Between her job as a barista, her best friend, dog Felix & an endless supply of coffee, she has everything she needs, or at least she should!
Sutton Sterling is the new head chef in town & not only can he cook, he’s charming, selfless, tattooed & ridiculously handsome. He’s only meant to be passing through but something or rather someone, stops him in his tracks.
You see Kelsey & Sutton have met before, 2 years ago. A night that he hasn’t been able to forget & that she’s tried everything TO forget.
~ review ~
Tattoo this book across my forehead because I never want to forget it.
Something Selfish is a cosy, chaotic, emotional, entertaining, sweet & spicy, heart warming, heart racing small-town romance that will tug at your heartstrings, play on your mind & leave a lasting impression. It’s not just everything you want in a romance, it’s everything you NEED. Pining, angst, yearning, chemistry, tension, lighthearted humour & banter, resolution, spice, walls coming down & a beautiful ending. [I’m well aware that’s a lot of words but when you read this book - which I implore you to do - you’ll get it. My head is still spinning, my heart is full & I’ve just about stopped crying]
Dakota Forest knows how to write books. She creates compelling characters that appeal to your emotions & stories that reel you in. I loved the use of flashbacks to tell Kelsey & Sutton’s story, they told us exactly what we needed to know at the time, without giving everything away. The timing of the conversation/resolution was also brilliant. Initially I thought it should’ve come sooner but in totality, the placement was just right. All the tension & waiting made the shift in their dynamic SO much better.
~ characters ~
Sutton is the book boyfriend to end all other book boyfriends. He’s selfless, considerate, determined & patient. He spent 2 years trying to push past whatever the issue was with Kelsey, a woman who didn’t want a thing to do with him & despite the pushback, he never gave up. Obsessive? Slightly, but in the best way possible. He made her gelato for heavens sake!!
Miss Kelsey aka Shadow has a hard shell with a soft centre. She’s stubborn, guarded & 100% dedicated to her cause, hating Sutton. I felt for her, I really did but 2 years!? I was hugely relieved to see her walls come down. Despite being the total opposite to Sutton, they work so well together. (2 year, one sided grudge aside…) Their personalities don’t clash but rather compliment one another.
~ final thoughts ~
This was a fantastic book. A cosy but chaotic escape that holds your attention from the outset & throughout. Dakota Forest gifts us a page turning story, characters that you want/NEED to know more about & an ending that will melt even the coldest of hearts (all I’ll say is HOME 🥹) & finally, Felix & Oscar were stars 🐾 I seriously cannot wait for book 2!!
💡Learning moment - COMMUNICATION IS KEY. Don’t spend 2 years stewing over an unintentional, miscommunicated situation that you don’t fully understand because you could be missing out on gelato & a guy who knows how to spice things up not only in the kitchen but in the bedroom too…aaaaaand breathe.
Something Selfish completely snuck up on me in the best way. It was my first Dakota Forest read (won't be my last!), so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But this was so cute, charming, and I loved Sutton and Kelsey's messy, sweet, slightly chaotic second chance. Plus the audio was so good.
The story drops you into the aftermath of one intense night between them, and you can immediately feel that something went very wrong. The tension!!! Kelsey is doing everything she can to avoid him (and she can be a bit snarly lol), while Sutton is just… standing there, fully obsessed, trying to figure out what happened. The slow reveal of their past through flashbacks works so well. It builds that emotional tension while their present day dynamic keeps pulling you in. The balance was great pacing wise.
Their vibe is peak black cat x golden retriever. Kelsey is guarded, a little prickly, and carrying hurt she refuses to unpack. Sutton is warm, patient, and so intentional it actually hurts. This man is down bad in the most elite way. Cooking for her, yearning for her, trying to recreate a dessert based on how she smells??? Yup, i'm a puddle. He shows up for her again and again, even when she is pushing him away. And when they finally start letting each other back in? SO good.
The banter is quick and funny, the chemistry is dynamic, and the forced proximity moments bring that simmering tension to a full boil. There is some miscommunication, but it fits the story and doesn’t feel overdone or trite. If anything, it just adds to the longing and frustration in a way that kept me hooked.
Also, the caretaking in this book? Top tier. Sutton’s love language is food and acts of service and he leans ALL the way in. It makes the romance feel soft and intentional even when emotions are running high. And I have to mention the pets because Felix the German Shepherd absolutely steals scenes and adds so much heart. Between him and Sutton’s cat, the cozy factor is unmatched. I'm a SUCKER for furry friends, and these two are the best.
This was all comforting and swoony despite their friction (angst is pretty low overall), but it still delivers on emotion, tension, and spice. And yes… the spice is spicing. Throw in a little “yes, chef” energy and it's a full meal and dessert.
The audiobook is SO SO good with elite narrators. Vanessa Edwin brings so much emotional nuance to Kelsey. You can feel every layer of her guardedness, frustration, and vulnerability. Jacob Morgan absolutely nails Sutton’s warmth and devotion. Jason Clarke doing down bad?! UGH it's a whole ass vibe. It's amazing his range, and here he brings the tone that perfectly fits the golden retriever, slightly obsessed energy perfectly. This is dual narration but the chemistry is great- the banter, the tension, and all the heart shine through. It is one of those audios that fully pulls you in.
Overall, this is such a fun, cozy, slightly spicy second chance romance with heart, humor, and characters that are lovable. Excited to check out more!
What to Expect: Second Chance Romance Small Town Setting Black Cat x Golden Retriever Down Bad Chef MMC Barista FMC He Falls First Forced Proximity Flashbacks / Past & Present Timeline Banter + Tension Caretaking / Acts of Service Adorable Pets (German Shepherd + Cat)
Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin nail the narration in this book - the sparks feel real, the banter is top-notch and the passion shines through.
I fell in love with this book for its emotional depth—the quiet devotion, maturity and a written man who raised the bar so high it ends up in the stratosphere.
At some point, Sterling stops feeling like a love interest and starts feeling like a full-service husband package with bonus side quests unlocked—driving hours out-of-state to not only handle family business, but spend a sleepless night fixing Kelsie’s car, swooping in last minute to cater his sister’s wedding (and do NOT get me started on that Runaway Groom – his sister’s fiancée stood her up the day of their wedding! I wanted to clobber that guy like whack-a-mole!!!), and quietly showing up in so many other small ways, down to memorizing Kelsie’s favourite foods from the night they met TWO YEARS AGO.
Then there are the moments that sneak up on you—the ones that aren’t grand gestures, but feel just as big. Examples include: when he pulls her out of the street without thinking, holds her close like it’s instinct, like it’s already written into him to protect her… and she kisses him. Not because she planned to, but because in that moment, it feels inevitable.
Just when you think he can’t possibly hurt her—he does. Not intentionally, but in an unexpected, complicated way. The restaurant he poured himself into turns out to be her grandmother’s home, a place filled with memories and meaning for her that he never knew he was touching. And suddenly, all that care, all those good intentions… collide with something deeper.
They try to reset, to call it friendship, but it never quite lands. The chemistry lingers in the smallest moments—a nickname that still hits too hard (Shadow), a handshake that shouldn’t feel like anything and yet feels like everything.
What I loved most is that the conflict doesn’t linger in miscommunication or pride. They meet each other with honesty—he apologizes for what he didn’t know, she acknowledges what she didn’t say—and just like that, it shifts from blame to understanding. It feels mature, intentional, and clears the way for everything they’ve been holding back.
Even in the smaller moments, he doesn’t stop showing up for Kelsie. It’s not just the big gestures—it’s the way he offers help without pressure, makes space for her to say no, and still makes it clear the door is always open. He offers her a spare apartment, not out of obligation—it’s care. Steady, thoughtful, and impossible to ignore.
And just when the emotional weight starts to build, the humor lands perfectly—like when she had genuine fear that his cat making biscuits on her was some kind of witchy ritual—which only makes their dynamic feel more real and endearing.
What makes him stand out isn’t just what he does, it’s how he feels. There’s a moment where he realizes that while she’s always making sure he’s okay, all he wants is for her to be okay—and that quiet shift says more than any grand declaration ever could.
He doesn’t just fall for her—he invests in her. In her future, her potential, her place in something meaningful. He wants to make it THEIRS. So when he finally says he loves her, it doesn’t feel like a leap. It feels like the natural conclusion of everything he’s been quietly proving all along.
When the ending happens, it’s not just about the proposal—it’s about everything that led up to it. The way he’s been choosing her, making space for her, believing in her from the very beginning. By the time he asks, it doesn’t feel like a question. It feels like they are both coming home – choosing a home, with each other.
Thank you so much to Dakota Forest and MLunA/Must Love Audio & Luna Literary for this ALC copy for an honest review.

This book completely pulled me in and did not let go.
Kelsey is 27, working at Cowgirl Coffee, living her quiet, slightly guarded life with her darker aesthetic, and love for her town. She’s someone who feels deeply but doesn’t always let people see it. Enter Sutton… aka *pretty boy* — tattooed, charming, a little too selfless for his own good, and immediately all in on her.
From the very beginning, you can feel the contrast between them. He’s warm, open, a little sunshine. She’s more shadow, a little guarded, holding onto things that still hurt. And somehow… it just works.
The timeline shift added so much depth. Seeing where Sutton came from, his family, Silver Springs, the chaos and love and responsibility he carries — it made his “hero complex” make so much sense. This man will *literally* drive hours, fix your car, take care of your problems, cook for you, and still look at you like you’re the only thing that matters.
And the pining?? Top tier. Sutton has been *gone* for Kelsey since the moment they met, and even when she’s cold or pushing him away, he never really wavers.
Kelsey, on the other hand… I just needed her to communicate her issues with Sutton. Although she locks herself for her own error when she realizes. The miscommunication, the holding onto hurt instead of just saying it — I wanted to shake her a little. But once everything comes to light, and she realizes Sutton never meant to hurt her? The shift between them feels so worth it.
Their dynamic softens into something really beautiful. The flirting comes back, the tension builds, and Sutton being obsessed with her in the smallest ways (making gelato flavors just for her??) absolutely wrecked me.
And yes… the chemistry is there. That man is *down bad*.
I also loved the side characters — Monica being the voice of reason, his chaotic but loving family, and even the pets (Felix and Oscar 🥹). It all made the story feel full and lived in.
The third act hurt. The misunderstanding, the running away, the fear of being left behind — it all felt very real. But what I appreciated most was how they came back together. They talked. They chose each other. Sutton choosing to build a life with Kelsey, not just around her, was everything.
And that ending??? Him bringing her back home, to her grandmother’s house — *their* home now. Carrying her over the threshold. The proposal. Glorias getting its star.
It was soft, earned, and so, so satisfying.
This was such a comforting, feel-good read with just enough angst to keep your heart fully invested. I couldn’t put it down, and honestly… Sutton has my whole heart.

Something Selfish by Dakota Forest Sterling Springs Series, Book 1 Narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan (Dual) Approximate Listen time: 10 hours and 44 minutes
This story is a charming, slow-burn romance built on a big misunderstanding, second chances, and undeniable chemistry.
Kelsey and Sutton’s story starts with an unforgettable night. One of those instant connection moments that feels rare and electric. Kelsey, a barista at Cowboy Coffee, and Sutton, a trained chef, seem to click effortlessly. But what should have turned into something more is derailed almost immediately when Kelsey discovers that Sutton has bought her grandmother’s home and turned it into a restaurant called Gloria’s. Hurt and betrayed, she shuts Sutton out completely.
Fast forward two years, and the tension between them is still very much alive. What makes this story shine is how that unresolved hurt slowly unravels into a deeper understanding. This is a story about how one little detail can change everything and how confronting it can open the door to something even better.
The banter between Kelsey and Sutton is easily one of the highlights of the book. It’s sharp, funny, and full of chemistry that never really went away. Sutton’s inner dialogue adds an extra layer of humor and charm and had me laughing out loud. Listening to Suttons perspective really made this book especially fun to read.
And the side characters.....Absolutely delightful. First you have Kelsey’s fiercely loyal (and very judgmental) German Shepherd, Felix, who hates everyone except Sutton. And we have Sutton’s grumpy black cat, Oscar(Felix and Oscar...BRILLIANT). Both of these characters matched the cozy, slightly chaotic vibe of the story. Don't even get me started on Suttons brothers and sister. They are going to each get book and I cannot wait to see where that goes!
There’s some family drama woven throughout, which adds depth without overshadowing the romance. Watching Kelsey and Sutton finally clear the air and give themselves a real chance is incredibly satisfying.
The audiobook truly elevates the experience. Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan deliver a phenomenal performance that brings these characters to life in such a vivid way. Jacob Morgan’s acting is especially standout—his delivery of Sutton’s inner thoughts adds so much personality and humor. Vanessa Edwin balances the tone beautifully, capturing both Kelsey’s comedic timing and her softer, more emotional moments with ease. Together, they create a dynamic listening experience that enhances the banter, the tension, and the heartfelt moments. It’s genuinely a brilliant performance and I highly recommend.

I fully enjoyed Something Selfish! Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin did an exceptional job bringing Sutton and Kelsey’s story to life. Their performances captured every ounce of emotion, tension, humor, and chemistry, making this audiobook impossible to stop listening to.
Set in small town Wyoming, Kelsey Rivers lives a quiet, comfortable life with her barista job, her best friend, her beloved dog Felix, and an endless supply of coffee. All she needs is to find a way to afford living in her small town.
Then Sutton Sterling arrives. The new head chef in town is talented, charming, selfless, tattooed, and distractingly handsome. He was only supposed to be passing through, but one unforgettable night with Kelsey changes everything.
From the moment they meet, sparks fly. Kelsey’s no filter honesty has her calling him "Pretty Boy" while Sutton quickly gives her the nickname “Shadow.” What starts as great conversation and one passionate night turns into two years of silence when Kelsey ghosts him completely.
What follows is a story full of miscommunication, heartbreak, and longing. Kelsey is devastated when her grandmother’s house is sold and turned into a restaurant, while Sutton spends two years trying to understand what went wrong and how to win her back. His devotion was everything.
Kelsey is grumpy, sassy, and guarded, while Sutton is patient, persistent, and impossible not to love. Their banter is top tier, their chemistry is electric, and the spice is perfectly balanced with real emotional depth. Watching Sutton slowly break down her walls was so satisfying.
And let’s talk about the true stars of the story Felix the German Shepherd 🐾 and Oscar the little witchy cat 🐈⬛✨ who absolutely added that extra touch of chaos and charm I didn’t know I needed.
Something Selfish is a cozy, chaotic small-town romance that gives you everything: pining, angst, yearning, sizzling chemistry, playful banter, healing hearts, and a beautiful ending. Sweet, spicy, emotional, and unforgettable this book will steal your heart and stay with you long after the final chapter.
I’m so thankful for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. The narration was unmatched.
I'm not good at writing amazing reviews, Reviews that sound like the person has a degree in English/language arts. I'm just a normal person who just writes out my thoughts and hopes it doesn't sound silly. So if this isn't poetry, I apologize but I don't write poetry anymore..
Blurb *Something Selfish is a spicy small town romance filled with banter, undeniable chemistry, and flashbacks to Kelsey and Sutton’s meet cute. Fall in love with the new chef in town and his local barista, and when things start heating up in the kitchen, cool off with some ice cream. It is book one in Dakota Forest's new series of interconnected standalone books, Sterling Springs.*
I was able to do an immersive reading of this book. I got the e-book & Audiobook in advance as a perk of being a Content Team member for the author. I have followed Dakota since her first book Full Send. I have "advanced read" for her for every book thereafter. I love these characters! These stories are so good! You get to meet a few characters from the other books in this book and vice versa. This book is about Sutton and Kelsey. Both in the service Industry. Sutton, a chef at Gloria's and Cat Dad to Oscar. And Kelsey is the Barista at Cowgirl Coffee and Dog Mom to Felix. The Audiobook was *chefs 💋*. Jacob Morgan and Vanessa Edwin did amazing! Jacob is the perfect Sutton! And Vanessa, the perfect Kelsey. The book overall was great! The story had a good balance of spice/banter/emotion. I loved the back story about the cat name too...lol so funny! I loved the characters peronalities together. I love when there is a "he falls first" situation. Also when the FMC is a strong female lead who acts stubborn but has a soft spot for the MMC & is able to let him into her heart. The flashbacks of their "Meet Cute" throughout were great. There weren't too many flashbacks or too little, it was perfect. I like when an author spreads the flashbacks out throughout the book because it makes it easier to follow for me. Plus it just makes everything more intriguing...it gets your brain moving with all kinds of ideas and thoughts about whats coming next, especially with other characters..or maybe that's just me..lol.
So I think I have bragged enough on Dakota for this review of Something Selfish. 😉🥰 10/10 recommend 👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🍨🍨🍨🍨= Spice rating because ice cream play....🥵
🍦☕ A grumpy barista, a golden retriever chef, and one very stubborn misunderstanding ☕🍦
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) Spice-meter: 🌶️☆☆☆☆ (1.5/5) Audiobook: 🎧 Dual Series: Sterling Springs, Book 1 (interconnected standalone) HEA: Yes
Something Selfish is a charming, easy-to-devour small-town romcom that leans heavily on banter, chemistry, and cozy vibes. As my first book by Dakota Forest, this was such a fun surprise. It doesn’t try to be overly complex or dramatic, instead delivering a light, engaging story that’s perfect when you just want to relax and enjoy the ride.
This is very much a “vibes” book, and honestly? It works.
The Story
Kelsey has built a quiet, predictable life in her Wyoming hometown. Between her job as a barista, her best friend, and her dog, she’s perfectly content… or at least that’s what she tells herself.
Enter Sutton.
A tattooed chef passing through town, bringing charm, chaos, and a whole lot of unwanted attention. The problem? Kelsey already met him two years ago… and whatever happened back then left a mark she hasn’t quite let go of.
Sutton, meanwhile, has no idea what he did wrong.
What follows is a mix of present-day tension and flashbacks that slowly unravel their history, all while fate keeps throwing them together in increasingly ridiculous (and entertaining) ways. From stolen cars to unexpected disasters, their story unfolds with humor, stubbornness, and a connection that refuses to stay buried.
🎧 Narration
Performed by Vanessa Edwin and Jacob Morgan, and this duo makes the audiobook an absolute treat.
Vanessa Edwin brings Kelsey to life with just the right mix of attitude, vulnerability, and dry humor. She makes her guarded personality feel natural and relatable.
Jacob Morgan… yeah, he’s a problem (in the best way). His voice is warm, smooth, and just the right amount of sinful, making Sutton’s golden retriever energy even more irresistible. His performance adds a layer of charm that elevates the entire listening experience.
Together, they create a relaxed, immersive vibe that perfectly matches the tone of the story.

Tropes & Vibes
✔️ Small-Town Romance ✔️ Black Cat × Golden Retriever ✔️ Barista x Chef ✔️ He Falls First ✔️ Miscommunication (past) ✔️ Found Family ✔️ Dual POV (1st person) ✔️ Open Door Romance
Final Thoughts
Something Selfish is fun, cozy, and effortlessly entertaining. It doesn’t aim to reinvent the genre, but it absolutely nails what it sets out to do: deliver a light, banter-filled romance with characters you enjoy spending time with.
The miscommunication trope might test your patience at times (you’ll definitely want to sit them down and force a conversation), but the chemistry and humor more than make up for it.
If you’re in the mood for a cute small-town romance with great dialogue, lovable chaos, and a chef who will absolutely win you over, this is an easy recommendation.
It's official! Sutton Sterling is the ULTIMATE Book Boyfriend! That's it. That's the review. Also, this book is Dakota Forest at her finest, in my opinion.
Something Selfish is the first novel in the Sterling Springs Series, which follows the story of Kelsey Rivers, a local grumpy barista, and Sutton Sterling, the new golden retriever chef in town. Dakota has put together a story with just the ideal blend of romance, humor, and spice. Combining it with a few dashes of themes about self-reflection, family values, and the allure of a small town, it's a worthwhile choice and a sweet treat for those in the mood for a lighthearted romantic escape.
What makes this book shine is the characters and their introspective journey. Sutton and Kelsey truly draw you in with their infectious charisma and chemistry, and you fall for them. Sutton's hero complex isn't just the trait that made me love his character, but also his patience, caring, obsession, and love for Kelsey. He's everything you'll be wishing for to be with. In contrast to the grumpy x sunshine trope I've been reading lately, Kelsey is a refreshing change. (Since most grumpy characters I've read were men.) She comes to appreciate the relevance of connections after inviting Sutton into her life. And how lovely it was to watch her luminescence unravel and shine throughout the course of the story.
At its heart, Something Selfish is more than just a love story... that also involves a very stubborn misunderstanding. It also highlights the importance of perseverance, fortitude, and the guts to take chances in life and love. You will undoubtedly devour this lovely book and leave no crumbs behind.
If you're going for a read with a great deal of longing, seething strife, and a character with a hero complex, this novel is highly recommended.
Receiving a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was an honour, and I'm presenting my candid opinion based on my own experience. I am eternally grateful to Dakota Forest and Luna Literary for entrusting me with reading this book beforehand.
