Was SO excited to read Dead Reckoning after how good Dead Tide was. This book exceeded all of my expectations! Jane Marks did a phenomenal job of telling the story of a mystery interwoven with romance that pulls on all the heartstrings. I hope Jane adds another book to this collection, I need more Elle and Roslyn!!!
The romance really heats up in this one EVEN THOUGH the characters have to work through some shit first. The setting was very easy to imagine and the combination of new dangers and Roslyn’s past haunting the narrative at every step really makes you feel like you’re on your toes the whole time. The motive for the crimes is also so interesting and I could really see that happening somewhere like this
Also slight spoilers but if you’re worried about the dog he is totally fine and makes it through the book safe😅
Dead tide was good but Dead Reckoning was GREAT!!! I truly did not see the ending coming and loved to see Elle and Roslyns relationship develop in the second book of this series. Im not usually much of a thriller/mystery reader but i still loved this book! I hope there will be another addition to the series soon and cant wait to see what else Jane Marks puts out there !!!!
I liked some aspects of DR better than DT, but I do wish the team were involved more in this book. I think the mystery wrapped up in a satisfying way. I liked getting to know Rosalyn better, and feel like the relationship between Rosalyn and Elle has the capacity for more growth. That being said, the timeline is confusing. How long are we in East Wilton? It seems like months, but then we don’t get any substantive understanding of the passage of time. Further, why don’t we get more info about Elle’s story? Even if the book is a span of two weeks, she isn’t really doing anything? Regardless, those issues would maybe knock off a star, but I was engrossed in the book so imma let it slide!
My star rating system:
⭐️ : Would never read, or DNF ⭐️⭐️ : Not for me, probably for others ⭐️⭐️⭐️ : Solid, but forgettable ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ : Excellent, would re-read eventually ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ : Would re-read immediately
The first in the Roslyn Hunt Mystery series, Dead Tide, was one of my top books in 2024. When this sequel popped up on my recommendations, I was luckily in between books so I could start it right away. Just like the first, I was hooked immediately and couldn’t put it down.
While Dead Tide gave us plenty of hints into her background, Dead Reckoning delivers on that urge to know more about the incredible SSA Roslyn Hunt. Jane Marks breathes life into her characters so effortlessly that it’s easy to get attached, and I was so excited to get more. There’s nothing quite like that Grumpy Roslyn and Sunshine Elle banter 💕 Both stories have also had a great balance between solving a high stakes mystery and allowing room for character development. I enjoyed Dead Tide’s slow burn with Elle and Roslyn, and I enjoyed the exploration into vulnerability in Dead Reckoning just as much.
Simply a spectacular series that will be staying on my radar. (But more Hunt FBI team in book 3 please I miss them 🙏)
Dead Reckoning is a modern day “And then there were none” Agatha Christie style whodunit and I LOVE it. The twist was more gentle than Dead Tide but equally as fun right until the end. Marks does an excellent job of taking your hand and leading you exactly where she wants you, eliciting a myriad of emotions before tying the story up in a neat little bow. It’s a satisfying read and Elle and Roslyn are the perfect hosts.
Dead Tide is up there as one of my favorite books. I was so excited to learn there was another one coming and Dead Reckoning absolutely did not disappoint! Cannot wait for more Ros and Elle!!
This sequel gave me exactly what I needed. It delivered the character depth I had been longing for while weaving in the kind of mystery my heart always craves. Jane has a way of making every character feel layered and real, which made me even more invested in their journey this time around.
Her writing is so engaging that I constantly found myself saying, "Just one more chapter," unable to resist turning the next page. The balance between emotional development and suspense was spot on, keeping me hooked from beginning to end.
Jane continues to be an auto-read author for me, and this book is another reminder of why. I'm already looking forward to picking up her next release.
