A Lyon for Luck: The Lyon's Den Connected World

Rate this book
Miss Daphne Acres can be described in one word. Unlucky. Terribly unlucky. With parents whose devotion is lackluster at best, a failed engagement, an elopement scandal that was in fact an abduction scandal in disguise, her reputation is in tatters. She’s both an object of ridicule and a cautionary tale for other young ladies… and now her father is attempting to force her to wed an aging roué who is both odious and odorous. Unwilling to be a pawn in anyone’s games ever again, Daphne breaks every rule and seeks out the services of Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon… who changes her luck forever.

Fletcher Quill, Lord Aldwyn, has gone from being poor to utterly impoverished. Poor was having no money. Impoverished is owing almost everyone money—because when one inherits a title, one also inherits its debts. But Mrs. Dove-Lyon proves to him that she’s earned her reputation as matchmaker supreme, because she introduces him to Miss Daphne Acres. Instantly, he is drawn to her. Like a moth to flame. In very little time, Fletcher realizes that while he needs her fortune, he simply wants Daphne… to a degree that stuns him. More dangerous still, he likes her and respects her. And all of those things together signify one thing… perhaps for the first time in his life, luck—along with a notorious matchmaker—has smiled on him. And love is not far behind.

But first, they have to outrun her father and the reprobate he intends to barter her to. Because while Fletcher may have never had very much to call his own, when it comes to Daphne, he’s decided that possession is more than nine/tenths the law. It’s everything… and he will protect her at any cost.

A Lyon for Luck by Chasity Bowlin is a short, romantic read featuring Bessie Dove-Lyon doing what she does best: make matches. This was a quick one as there was no time as Miss Daphne Acres was a to be betrothed and married to a man whom everyone agreed was beyond disagreeable. Her father owed the man money and well… Her husband was to be Lord Fletcher Quill, the second son of a second son, who should never have inherited, and yet, did. He was broke and he now owned a variety of properties mortgaged to the hilt as well as in ruins. He needed a rich wife and she needed a husband. Bessie arranged it all.

Both characters were likable and deserving of more. Daphne had been kidnapped to implicate her in and scandal in an attempt by the cousin of Lord Lynley, who had been her betrothed to keep him from meeting the teems of the will and unable to inherit. But Lord and Lady Lynley turned out to be her best friends and she was very happy they had found one another. That didn’t help her, though. After making her deal at the Lyon’s Den, she climbed out of her bedroom window and ran away with Fletcher to be married. Of course, that trip was fraught with problems as well. An excellent short read.

This is my 57th book by Chasity Bowlin. I have been reading her books since mid-2017. I know she isn't normally super steamy but I've been reading her for so long and she is such a good writer, I don’t care and she gives just enough. I know I'll get a good read from her either way. She is on my list of favorite authors. I have read a lot of books from this series and really like them but lately all the ones I've read have been so good so expect nothing less from her.

I really liked Daphne and Fletcher. It was a good story. I love how Bessie always finds the perfect matches :). It was a quick read but good.

On the one hand, at just 92 pages, this was exactly the kind of cute, quick, and easy read that I needed. It was the perfect palate cleanser after some heavier books that I have read as of late.

On the other hand… at 92 pages, it also feels like something is missing.

Because while the story itself is enjoyable enough, there are definitely moments where things don’t feel as fleshed out as they could have been. Certain developments happen a little too easily, and when they do, they lack the emotional payoff that would have made them truly satisfying.

Starting with the characters. Daphne was easily the more compelling of the two. A woman ruined by a scandal that wasn’t even of her own making? There’s a lot there to work with, and I found myself far more interested in her backstory than anything else. I kept wanting to know more about what really happened between her, her former betrothed, and her brother’s tutor, especially if people were so quick to believe she had eloped with him. There’s clearly more beneath the surface that we weren't privy to in this book (I did find her former betrothed's book in this series and have added it to my to-be-read pile so I may come back and revisit this once I've read it).

Fletcher, on the other hand… felt like a walking cliché. The man who never expected to inherit a title suddenly finds himself burdened with one, and, of course, it comes with financial ruin, meaning he needs a wealthy wife as quickly as possible. We’ve seen it before, and unfortunately, nothing about his character really stood out enough to make it feel fresh this time around.

That said, one thing I do appreciate about this series as a whole is how accessible it is. Even with the sheer number of books set in this world (126 at last count), they can all be read as standalones. Yes, there are small details that might make you pause or wonder about past events, but nothing that prevents you from understanding or enjoying the story in front of you. At its core, this is about two people with complicated pasts finding a new beginning together, and that part works.

As I hinted at before, where it faltered for me was in the “danger” aspect of the plot. Given everything that Daphne has gone through, I wanted more tension, more buildup, and ultimately, a more satisfying resolution. While things do wrap up in a way that technically feels earned, it still felt a bit too neat, a bit too easy, especially considering what these characters had been through. Daphne, in particular, deserved something with a little more weight behind it. Let’s just say… she’s a much nicer person than I am.

All that being said, I’m not done with this world. If anything, this made me more curious about some of the earlier books, so I’ll probably be circling back to explore those next.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

A delightful novella which I read straight through, another lovely addition to the connected world. I really liked both Fletcher & Daphne who both took a leap of faith when they decided they needed to runaway to keep Daphne safe. As they flee Daphne realises that Fletcher is unlike most of the men she’s known, he’s kind, he’s protective & he’s honest. I loved their journey to a HEA & was routing for them all the way. Whilst the novella was a delight I wanted it to be longer as I wanted to spend more time with the couple
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

If Fletcher Quill didn't have bad luck he'd have no luck at all. Now, recently named, Lord Aldwyn he is unlucky and broke. Miss Daphne Acres gets her bad luck from her father. An odious man who's gambling debts are forcing her to marry an old, smelly lord. She has an inheritance from a grandfather that was in Trade and she choses to defy her father by finding another husband. Enter Bessie Dove-Lyon, infamous matchmaker from the gaming hell,. the Lyons Den. She is truly magical in her selections.

I really enjoyed this addition to the Lyon's Den series. Bessie Dove-Lyon takes her matchmaking to the next level by making amends for a previous match gone wrong. Fletcher needs money, fast and Daphne needs to marry quickly to thwart her father's plans. And she has lots of money. We initially met Daphne in Bowlin's earlier "Lady Luck and The Lyon" and we learn the real story of her "elopement." A glimpse into the love between Viscount Lynley and Ellis as they assist in Daphne's true run to Gretna Green.

This was a quick read with a wonderful HEA. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity.

Miss Daphne Acres needs to find a husband of her choosing fast, before her father makes her marry a horrible man. Fletcher Quill, Lord Aldwyn, needs to find an heiress as quickly as possible in order to pay the debts he has inherited. Both of them turn to Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon for her matchmaking services. She decides that they will both be able to help each other and arranges a meeting for them. Can two people who are only marrying because they have to marry found happiness together?

I love The Lyon’s Den series and this book definitely did not disappoint!! I thought the book was very entertaining, so much fun and extremely delightful!! I really liked how Daphne and Fletcher helped each other with their problems while developing feelings for each other on their journey. I instantly liked both characters and thought they made the perfect couple together. While the book is a short, quick read, I felt it was well written and very engaging. I highly recommend this book!!

We have Miss Daphne Acres a very wealthy heiress who is scandal ridden from a failed engagement and an abduction gone wrong!
Now her father and stepmother wants to se her off to a man who values hygiene not at all ever but is very rich.
Fletcher Quill, Lord Aldwyn Is an impoverished second son one step from debtors prison due mismanagement of his forefathers! They both have applied to Mrs Bessie Lyon but Daphne is physically punished for standing up to her father the bully!
Fletcher is determined to aid this beautiful woman who has no self worth and believes her only value is in coins!
There is nonstop action as they evade their would be captors.
When safety and marriage is found they are still pursued now legally! I love the way they finish their accusers in the Lyons den!! Mrs Bessie in times past only used to make one appearance but lately by various writers it has been certainly more than one! Bravo well done! I received an ARC copy from Netgalley for my unbiased opinion!

This was a short sweet novella about Daphne, a brave heroine that was trying to escape a cruel father that promised her to a man even more cruel. She went to the Lyon’s Den for help. The Black Widow had just met a newly titled aristocrat, Fletcher, that needed a wealthy bride to handle the overwhelming debts he inherited with his title. They met and decided to elope hoping to get married with her father and promised betrothed on their heels. The journey brought mishaps that slowed their progress and allowed them time to connect on different levels. This was a slow burn, close proximity marriage of convenience that turned into so much more. The main characters were both good people who deserved love. They were a couple that it was easy to root for their happiness.

The trope of a hard done by woman coming into her own is gently executed by Chastity Bowlin.

Miss Daphne Aces has been hard done by that’s for sure. She’s an heiress but her parents want her inheritance to clear their debts. Parents who are willing to trade you for money to a despicable future husband. Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyonx helps solve her problem and introduces her to the newly and unexpectedly peer, Fletcher Quill, Lord Aldwyn who’s come into an inheritance that’s in debt to the hilt.
Once before Daphne had been abducted by someone fleeing to Gretna Green with her. As a result her fiancé broke the engagement and she is shunned by society. This time Daphne flees on her own terms.
A rather untaxing lovely read.

A Dragonblade ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Daphne Acres visits Bessie Dove Lyon at the Lyon's Den is search of a groom to prevent her from having to marry the older, odiferous man her father is trying to betroth her to. Fletcher Quill, Lord Aldwyn has unexpectedly inherited a title that has no money attached to it so he turns to the Lyon's Den in hopes that its owner can assist him in finding a bride with a dowry large enough to help him restore his livelihood. In order for them to marry, they must head to Scotland to wed before he father and the gentleman he wishes Daphne to marry catch up to them. A short but action packed novella with a HEA. So glad that Daphne, who never received love from her parents, was able to find a man who was willing to see beyond the fortune she was bringing her and who was able to treat her with kindness and eventually love.

Thank you NetGalley. Fletcher just inherited his uncle's title along with all of his debts. Mrs Dove-Lyon is going to ind him a rich bride to get him out of trouble. Then Daphne contacts her to help, her father has made arrangements with an older lord nobody likes and his reputation is not good. She sneaks out of the house to meet Fletcher after their arrangements are made to go to Greta Green. Her friends are helping them. They get a good lead on her father and the man who is to cover her father's debits to marry her. She still has money her father can't put his hands on. They decide not to go to Greta Green but where his country home is and they are married there. They seem to have all kinds o bad luck.

What an absolutely delicious romp this is! If it wasn’t for bad luck, Daphne and Fletcher both would have no luck at all. I adored how Daphne realized that the only way to protect herself was to do it herself. I felt bad for her family life and truly wanted to see her father get what he deserved from the very first. The main villain gets his due, just not in the way I would have thought and Fletcher’s protectiveness and love for Daphne was pouring out of every pore . Though not as twisted as it could have been, this is one delightful story worthy of the time it takes to read it!

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

Do you like a story about a desperate bride and the man who rescues her? Here's a novella that does just that and no more.

This was the perfect scope for a novella-length book. We had the desperate elopement, the nefarious and bumbling villain, the clever and underhanded helper. We watch a couple go from never having seen each other through developing their first connection and intimacy. It all had enough detail to be engaging without getting bogged down.

There wasn't much character or emotional depth, but it was enough to balance out the story. This was a fun and quick read that gives Regency romance readers a pleasant evening immersed in one of our favorite tropes.

I really like this series The Lyon’s Den with many if my favourite authors submitting books. Chasity Bowlin is one of these authors and some of the characters in this novella links back to a previous book in this series.
Miss Daphne Acres is an heiress desperate to escape a marriage being forced upon her by her father
She visits Bessie Dove Lyons to discuss fining her a husband. She is introduced to Fletcher Quill Lord Aldwyn who until his recent inheritance was poor, now he is even in more debts They meet and decide to elope
Being a novella there are few surprises or twists and turns as the couple are pursued by her father and the expectant groom. But enough to keep interesting. As is the meeting up with previously met characters.
Short but a good story. I would recommend it

This novella did not disappoint. It delivered exactly what I was hoping for and then some. It’s a short and sweet read, and it's truly engaging from beginning to end. The prose is smooth and easy to sink into.

Both main characters were incredibly likeable! Daphne and Fletcher’s relationship develops in such a natural, satisfying way. And Fletcher, in particular, was such a standout! He’s genuinely sweet in a way that feels sincere, not overdone, which made his dynamic with Daphne all the more enjoyable to watch unfold.

Overall, it’s a very charming, entertaining read!

A great story

This as most of the Lyon Den series was a shorter story but loved the storyline. Daphne needed a new betrothed and Fletcher needed a wealthy wife to support his new title. There situation came about at the same time and Bessie Love Lyon was able to assist and play matchmaker. This is one of my favorite authors and she did not disappoint. I have read several books in this series and enjoy the central character and really like the format of using different authors to tell their story centered about the Lyons Den. Enjoy!

Another Wonderful, Entertaining & Romantic Story.

The Story was Wonderful.   A hero who never expected to inherit a title. He is now  a penniless & titled lord with his uncles debts he doesn't know how to pay.  A heroine who's father & stepmother can't seem to love. They try to sell her off to pay her father's debts.

Daphne & Fletcher were wonderful characters.

I am looking forward to reading "The Lyon's Shadow" by Ruth A. Casie in the next book in this series.

A delightful quick read! I wish it had been longer as Daphne and Fletcher were such wonderful characters. It was sweet how quickly Fletcher determined to protect Daphne. Her back story was so touching. I'd love to see more of them or an expanded version of this novella. It is another great addition to the Lyon's Den series!

A Short Enjoyable Story
This story was interesting and Mrs. Dove Lyon plays another helpful role in this edition.
It kept my attention being a quick story with an abrupt ending,
Honestly it could have so much better with a little charismatic passion and tension towards the end.
