And you know what they say about payback…
Beatrix and Chau have disposed of Donnie Qi, the triad gangster who wanted Chau dead. They are given work by Mr. Ying, the underboss of the Wo Shun Wo clan. But when Beatrix intervenes to save the life of a young girl who has inadvertently crossed the triads, she finds herself in direct opposition to Ying.
Ying wants her dead. What will Beatrix be prepared to do to keep her loved ones safe?
NINE DRAGONS is the second prequel novella in the bestselling BLOOD & ROSES series, which follows the saga of the British government’s deadliest ex-operative.
Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.
He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).
The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.
For a short story it filled all the criteria. I haven't read the main books and have moved to the next short story to finish the extended prologue. Great fun.
Mark Dawson takes time out again ahead of his 3 main Beatrix Rose thrillers; this is the second of the Hong Kong stories that reflect the preparation for seeking revenge on her former associates. While her husband has been murdered in the betrayal her focus is on having money to persue those who have taken her daughter, Isabella. Hong Kong is a good place R and R, in this case expanding revenue and plotting revenge. However, Beatrix Rose is an accomplished killer and a gun for hire and keeping off radar seems to be beyond her personality. In the first book she got involved with the Triads trying to protact a decent guy who had been chatting her up in a local bar. As a result she offered her services to another triad and solved both her position and that of her new found accomplice Mr Chau. In this novella Beatrix & Chau work together for Mr Ying and she successfully completes six contracts taking people out for the Triad boss. Unfortunately the softer belly of our female assassin becomes exposed as she is forced to go against the triad for the sake of a neighbour's child. How can she avoid helping young Grace when her own daughter has been abducted and needs similar assistance? The writing is tense and enlightening so that you feel part of the chinese feel of Hong Kong; the characters work well and a certain danger lurks in the narrative so that you remain as alert and as on edge as Beatrix & Chau. The triads are all seeing and all powerful but you learn to side with Beatrix even when she continues to add to the body count because you buy into her greater goal and the saga of saving her daughter. A pleasure to read anything by Mark Dawson but his writing is always driven by old fashioned stories of blurred 'good' and many faceted evil. Who will win the battle of wills between Ying & Beatrix; you'd want to keep in both their good books by book 3 it will be too late to decide. We're heading for a showdown!
This novella around 90 pages or so is the continuation in the prequel to the bestselling series Blood and Roses and the second in the trilogy. I highly suggest reading in sequence and planning to read all three of them one after the other.
“Nine Dragons” picks up where “White Devil” finished. It has ton of action and packs a lot of punch in the short pages as we follow Beatrix’s trials and tribulations. Within its 90 pages there are more shooting and stabbing one can imaging to read in a full size novel. Mr. Dawson knows how to write thrilling adventure that keeps us on the edge of our seat. Beatrix is as lethal as ever and is a wonderful character and so are the supporting actors.
This is a great little mini series with an introduction to the main series about Beatrix Rose. Wow, it's really good. Mark Dawson is amazing at describing the surroundings in his books.
One of the best writers I’ve read…9 Dragons is no exception
What a writer/story teller. Mark Dawson has become one of my favorite writers, if not my favorite writer. His prose are smooth and his story telling, I believe, will one day be legendary. I’ve read four of his books in the last couple of weeks and none have disappointed me. As soon as I finish writing my comments, I’m going to buy the 3rd in the series.
If anyone out there is a wanna be writer, looking for a training course…just read Mark’s masterful works and soon enough you’ll find yourself…telling your own stories.
Like most, I discovered Beatrix during her association with John Milton. I was delighted to see Mark write these novels, both to fill in the missing years, and because I am selfish and love reading Beatrix's adventures. Mark did a great job of making Beatrix's behavior realistic as she works through the pain. I felt like I was right there beside her trying to help her. Thanks for another great read, Mark.
A true Blue Rose is an impossibility in nature and Beatrix has an impossible task to complete in the next installation of this series. But I believe in the possibility of the impossible! And, I believe that Beatrix, if any one could, will come up with a true Blue Rose!
Beatrix Is a very cunning and dangerous woman This book was hard to put down falling what her next action would be To save herself From the triads
She has a good heart But it also is gets her in trouble I look for reading how she will end She is very cunning and dangerous and the suspense you cannot put this book down I recommend it to all to read It's the best
The stakes were higher in Nine Dragons with more action and Beatrix puts her life on the line to protect a kid. I found it so sweet how she immediately took her under her wing to make sure she was safe and fed. I am excited, yet kind of sad, to see how it all goes down between not only Beatrix and Ying but Beatrix and Chau after he abandoned Grace.
I have enjoyed reading his books. I hate to put them down because they keep me wandering what is going to happen next. I would recommend them to all the people who love a good mystery.
Another great job Dawson! I don’t get Beatrix being sloppy with Ying as she is so careful about Control. Why expose yourself to him, rather kill him, and problem goes away. I know you have another book to write. 5
This novella while interesting feels like it ends just as it starts to get interesting. Taken in the whole series I like better, but by itself feels very unsatisfying alone. . Major cliffhanger at the end
Beatrice finds herself innocently in a battle in the Hong Kong underground. What started out as helping a stranger has ballooned into a turf war of dangerous proportions. Beatrice has a serious problem to solve but her mind is churning for a solution!!
I liked book 2 of the novellas. I think Chau is losing his ability to keep Beatrix's trust. Hmmm. I hope there is good news for the child. Eager to read book 3.
Nine Dragons - A Beatrix Rose Thriller: Hong Kong Stories Volume 1 (Beatrix Rose 0.2) by Mark Dawson
Received in exchange for an honest review
5*
This is a novella book and therefore I read in one sitting with my morning cuppa.
This is the second book in the trilogy and picks up where the first one White Devil finished.
Beatrix and Chau have an unusual partnership and were brought together following them killing and disposing of Donnie Qi who was the Triad gangster in Book 1 under instructions of Mr Ying.
They are given another job by Mr Ying for them to undertake and interlinked with that Beatrix saves the life of a young girl who through no fortune of her own crossed paths with the triads.
Again can’t or won’t divulge any more as not fair due to being a novella.
I am lucky enough to be on the advance reading team of Mark Dawson so have book 3 ready to read and will be start and hopefully finished today.
I would recommend you buy all 3 together as once you have read on you will want and need to know what happens and therefore saves you the time of having to obtain the second and then the third copy.
Nine Dragons furthers Beatrix's trials and tribulations after her daughter is taken by Control.
Hiding out in Hong Kong, Beatrix finds herself doing hits for the triads to try and raise the money to pay the investigators tasked with trying to find her daughter and smoking opium to relax and sleep at the end of the day.
She ends up on the wrong side of the triad boss when she kills a half-dozen of his men while trying to,protect a young girl who, lives in the apartment across the hall from her own.
Nine Dragons packs a lot of punch in a short number of pages- the action is fast and furious.
If you like thrillers, suspense and action . . . you must read about Beatrix Rose!
As a ruthless assassin, there was no one better. When she lost everything, she knew they would look for her. Finding "employment" with the only skills she has didn't take long in Hong Kong, however, she quickly learns a bit of compassion is very costly!
I have thoroughly immersed myself in the tight and descriptive writings of Mark Dawson. If you like thrillers and suspense, you will find them addicting, too! After digesting the two Beatrix Rose trilogies, the books about her daughter, isabelle, are next!
I love Beatrix Rose. For some reason I let this 3-box set sit dormant in my Kindle. I had to work out of town this weekend and decided to dig in while I was on the road.. I actually read the entire set in about a day This is Book 2 in the set. More shooting, stabbing, meat cleavering--a perfect way to spend the afternoon. And acts of kindness toward children in distress. How I do love Beatrix!
