A real letdown
After a few really good books, the author again diverted to a side story that only should have been a few chapters instead of an entire book. At this rate, it will take a few dozen books to complete the series. Ah well.....that's how it is these days. It's about selling books, not writing great stories. Two stars for a giant waste of time.

It’s been a while since I read the last book. A part of me was almost worried to start this one. Like what if it turns out like some of my more recent books. Stuff that I have to force myself through.
This book was great. I finished it in two days. It flowed, I didn’t want to stop.
It’s kind of sad considering how fast I got through it. I just want to get onto the next book right now.
If you’re reading this book, you probably liked all the books before. This book is just another continuation of that goodness.

Going into book 9, I decided to reread everything, Nova Terra books 1 to 10 and then the whole Tower series. Why? Because I honestly couldn’t remember the plot of Tower. In Nova Terra I remember everything up to book 9, but after that it’s all fuzzy. I know the major things that happened, I just don’t remember what happened, you know what I mean? So this was the perfect excuse to listen to the whole thing again. And it led me to one realization: Seth Ring is a good author who is very lazy.
Why do I call him good? Because there is a genuine story behind all the tedium. Some of the characters are okay in terms of intrigue, and the power fantasy is better than most in this genre. That’s the allure, and it mostly works.
Why do I call him lazy? Because he repeats the same cycle over and over and over and over and over. (That’s not me exaggerating, that’s literal.) Of books 2 to 8, five end with Thorn forced somewhere he doesn’t want to be, teleported away, or turned into a criminal, and the next book starts him low and does it all again. Here it is book by book:
Book 2: starts severely weakened. Meets Velen and his friends near the end, then has to join slavers right away. (Down, up, down.)
Book 3: starts in a gang of criminals and slavers, leaves them, then finally enters the tower. (Down, up, up.)
Book 4: an adventure through a tomb. (Flat all the way through.)
Book 5: gets into the puzzle, meets his grandfather, then has to leave because his friend is kidnapped. (Flat, major up, down.)
Book 6: chases his friend into god beast territory and has to navigate their politics, then gets teleported away. (Down, up, down.)
Book 7: starts in a mediocre prison, then it gets interesting as we learn how the tower is connected. In the last stretch he finally enters the tower at floor 10, but ends up a criminal immediately. (Down, up, down.)
Book 8: runs to an island on floor 10, revamps it and is on the verge of conquering the floor, then gets teleported to the Demon Land. (Down, up, down.)
Book 9: starts at the bottom again. (Down.)
Up and down, up and down, up and down. It gives you whiplash. Every time something starts building, he yanks it away and puts Thorn somewhere else. It started in Nova Terra and Tower copies it. Meanwhile we’re told constantly that Thorn is broken (overpowered), and the book backs it up, because he barely struggles with anything. So how weak and hopeless can he really be? Starting him over often is the cheap way to get stakes, because writing real ones for a character this strong is harder. And every reset sends him somewhere new, which is a big reason the tower keeps getting pushed back.
Now here’s what really got me. The series is called Tower, and every floor of it is its own world, like a level in a video game. It took three books to reach it. Book 4 was a tomb adventure. Then detour, detour, detour. By book 7 he’s finally told it’s time to climb, and then he skips ahead to floor 10, where the true climb begins. Book 8 finally starts conquering floor 10, and then he’s thrown out.
(Spoilers for book 9.) We find out they conquered four floors (11 to 14) in the three years Thorn was in the Devil Realm, with three or four more on the verge. Why don’t we get to see it? Why don’t we see the other clans capitulate? They’re speedrunning the floors, basically getting them for free, while Thorn spends nearly the entire book in and around the Devil Realm. Instead we watch him walk through the Devil landscape and realize he’s been way more overpowered than he thought (he thought he was human, he’s not). The tower has 100 floors. I don’t expect all 100, but 20 or 30? We’ve seen five: floors 1, 2, 3, 10 and 25. And 25 was only because he got thrown in a prison and accidentally gained control of it. WHAT?
What saved this book was meeting the Titan responsible for the Devil Realm. That was interesting, learning more about the unique circumstances of Titans, and the crazy power up was good too. Before that I was ready to give it one star.
This is something I’ve noticed for a while reading LitRPG. It isn’t a problem unique to this series, but it lingers throughout the genre. If you write a game world with deep lore, then explore the deep lore. I’ve put months into Witcher 3, Skyrim, Fallout and Fallout New Vegas. Why? Because they have deep fucking lore, and the side content is where you find it.
Tower gives us that. We get thousands of side quests, and each one has tidbits of lore and gives Thorn something more to do. I don’t mind that. What I do mind is that the floors don’t get anywhere near the same amount of time. The main quest, conquering the floors of the tower, is the part that gets rushed. It’s like spending 200 hours on Witcher side quests, learning why Skellige is in the state it’s in, helping overthrow its rulers, playing Gwent, and the moment I finally start the main quest I’m suddenly in the last mission fighting the Wild Hunt. What the fuck just happened? A minute ago I was in side quests. That’s Tower. We expect a climb up a 100 floor tower, and we barely get five. If a dev spends the whole budget on side quests and has $10 left to build the entire main story, what are you doing as a game dev?
I would gladly read a 20 book story, a 25 book story, if it meant the floors got as much time as the side quests and we actually got to experience the full lore. There are so many things he writes in that end up as loose ends. So much lore that could be explored. So much history. Instead the floors are being speedrun, and Thorn is almost at max power already.
I think the author is bored of the series (or he just doesn’t give as much as he used to). I’ve spent over $150 USD on this series, but it’s the time that matters more to me. I started in 2020, so that’s six years of reading it, and obviously I care about it. I don’t have any concrete evidence, but the way book 9 ends makes me think the author is wrapping things up, and I have a feeling it’s going to be rushed. I’m worried we won’t get a good number of floors or any real political turmoil. If that’s how it ends, the time I put in feels wasted at the very, very end. I feel scammed.

Too quick!
Ugh! The story is too good! I devoured the pages in less than a day. I need more, feed my addiction!
Thorn finds himself tossed into the Abyssal Lands where he has to find a way back home. But of course he finds opportunities to unleash himself and learn about his capabilities in a badass sort of way.
Reuniting with his friends and family, the Abyssal lands just might be the perfect location to really spread their roots (iykyk) and transform it into the perfect place for a Titan to rule from.

Blood pools
Book 9 of the Tower series. I love the Thorne books. This takes place in the demon realm. OT favorite titan is back kicking butts and finding new ways to advance. The only disappointing part is that he spent little time forging and really creating anything new and cool. Also, would love to see a new bump in the AI as now he is beginning to surpass its abilities in certain areas. Overall this is a strong series and looking forward to the next book.

Hero Thorn, the Titan, has gone to hell--literally. The Abysmal zone is the home of devils, who seek to conquer every realm. That's where he is, with no way out.
So what does he do? He seeks to take over hell. He qualifies for the elite devil army and is a commander. Of course, superior devils seek to manipulate him--and he them.
It's a delightful romp, with plenty of battles and Thorn becoming yet more powerful--and finding another Titan in the mix.

A walk through the devil land
Well, it's more like where the devils come from. Along the way Thorn manages to uncover the origin of the devils and taking on even more responsibility. All in all, a fun return to a fascinating world/universe by Seth Ring. I'm looking forward to the next in the series!

Cannot get enough!
Thorn is one of my favorite characters of all time. Seth does such a fantastic job of building a scene, pacing the story, and immersing the reader in the action that is impossible not to like this series. Always recommend Nova Terra and the Tower series' to my friend and family.

Fun story but the series just doesn’t feel like it’s progressing and I’m ready for it to come to an end.
Seth has awesome ideas, instead of forcing them into a series and getting side tracked I think he’d excel at writing a ton of two book series. Also characters need to die there are no stakes in these books.

Yet another excellent book in the series that followed nova terra I think. I enjoyed that one and this is a great continuation of that wonderful story. I recommend reading that one first and then this one you won’t regret the ride

The problem is…
Good books go by to fast regardless of length, and bad one drag on endlessly, fortunately this was a very good book. My only hope is for more Akira in the next book, btw where was his God Beast?

Such a great read
My only regret is finishing this book so quickly. Thorn and friends are such wonderful characters and the different world the author creates adds amazing depth to the story - love the Tower book series.

Another great read.
I always enjoy a book centered around Thorn. I would have liked more interaction with some of the supporting characters but it does a great job of showing Thorns growth.

Loved the new setting
It was great seeing more of the abyssal lands and all the adventures to be found there.
Making a character so powerful still be interesting is another part that makes this series such a great read.

Good flow with an introduction of new characters that almost immediately start to feel like old pals in the group.

Just keeps on getting better

I originally was going to give it 4 stars but after reflecting I'm giving it 3.
It's the tower series...and this entire book WASN'T IN THE TOWER.
