I really wanted to like this book. It has great potential and I liked that this was an older couple and they were focused more on learning to respect each other as people, but I was rolling my eyes repeatedly at the teenage emotional whiplash the MFC kept having just from hearing gossip. I would think it was finally moving on then it was back to the same ordeal repeatedly. I was irritated to the point of considering not finishing. I pushed myself to finish and did not find myself being able to engage in the story.

Somewhere north of London ~
The final escape into death of Louisa Thorne, age 26, by consumption was a quiet day like any other. Yet Isabelle Thorne was a spinster of 28 when her head finally arose above the duty, service and loving care of the past 11yrs. Isabelle awakened to discover that life had simply passed her by. She had no idea how to pick up the pieces of her life and begin anew. Too long she allowed herself no personal dreams, desires, friends, no hope beyond the moment. As for her future? What will she to do? Isabelle, herself, doesn’t even know - without duty, who is she?

While River, the Duke of Thornbury, 30, reluctantly attends a summer ball with his sister, he notices a quiet woman in a grey dress across the room. He watches her move through the room, around its edges; she smiles and nods but in truth, she barely exists. When River requests his sister to introduce him to the woman, she smiles and courtesies correctly. But she looks past him as if she only waits until she can finally leave. River has met many woman who have hung on his every word. This one seems to barely notice him. Yet he observes in her someone unique, someone held together by determination, without expectations or complaint, through long held habit. Who is she? What is her story?

Comments ~
1) I found A PRACTICAL MARRIAGE WITH A SPINSTER incredibly poignant. It reached deep and stirred me as I read. I was touched by Isabelle and the Duke’s story. River began seeing Isabelle’s possibilities but rather than risk being hurt, Isabelle quietly retreats into duty, service and usefulness. This underlying fear of being known struck me as so sad. Her discovery of self was challenged by the censure of others and her limited belief in herself.
2) As I read, I could not escape the conviction that the words we use regarding others can do so much harm, perhaps more than we could possibly know. It is no wonder that people are advised to guard their speech with caution. Isabelle is repeatedly hurt, her fragile confidence damaged and her marriage weakened by the callous, thoughtless words of outsiders. I love the message River carefully teaches Isabelle, everyone has value for just being themselves.
3) I highly recommend A PRACTICAL MARRIAGE WITH A SPINSTER to anyone who might seek a thought provoking read which challenges the heart, mind, behaviors and motives. I avoid angst-filled and drama-filled novels. This isn’t that, rather it is heartfelt & poignant with a sweet ending. (I reread the beginning chapters and am sure to return to this again in the future).

READER CAUTIONS ~ This is a wonderful book of discovery, suitable for all readers.
PROFANITY - None.
VIOLENCE - None.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - None.

MY RATING GUIDE: 5. Rarely given.
1=DNF/What was that?; 2=Not for me; 3=Ok; 3.5=I enjoyed this; 4=I really liked; 5=I TRULY LOVED THIS! (5 is rare for me).

Notes for me

1800s

River - Duke of Thornbury

Isabelle 28 years old. Spent last 11 years caring for her terminally ill sister.

Louisa her sister.

Story opens with Isabelle thinking back on her last few years. Everything she had was given to caring for her sister. She never even read a book for her own pleasure. It’s heartbreaking because she is alone and lost. No parents, no siblings.

River sees her at a luncheon. He is very intrigued. She’s not a classic beauty and she’s in mourning gray, but there’s just something about her. She works to make herself invisible.

River asks his cousin Georgiana to introduce him. She figures out it’s because he needs a wife. All of the other young women were too frivolous, ambitious, contriving. Just too much. Isabelle seems to be someone who’d desire little, expect less and demand nothing.

He proposes his idea to her. It’s practical for both of them. He’s adamant no feelings.

He notices quickly she tries to stay out of his way. He doesn’t like it and tells her he wants her around.

They are married maybe 2 months and he realizes he’s in love with her.

Beautiful, Emotional Work!

“A Practical Marriage with a Spinster” was a beautiful, emotional read. If you are looking for character growth and emotional depth, look no further. Isabelle and River are such a sweet pair!

Isabelle has never considered her own feelings or desires. She doesn’t know how to want, as hope has been a fleeting feeling kept away from her for the last decade of her life. When her sister dies, she finds herself lacking purpose. As River provides a possible new life- the duties of taking on a household- Isabelle agrees as she has never found herself so rudderless.

The plot is pretty straight-forward. There are not many bumps. Where this piece shines is the emotional pull. If you’ve ever felt unseen, this one will touch your soul. It definitely spoke to me!

I’ve made like 100 highlights in this one. River’s words were also just so perfect! One of my favorite motifs was this repeated -

“No one will notice” (-Isabelle).
“He noticed immediately” (-River).

It was SO GOOD.

A Duke Looking at His Future Wife..

Isabelle has no idea what to do with
herself after years of devotion & love, so she’s unsure what to think when the Duke,River, asks for her hand- for duty & devotion but not for love. But he was so wrong falling
for his wife since their marriage..
She is unsure what to call the little
things that happen each day until she hears people in the village speaking of her & the Duke. It is his response later that travels to all of London..A Very Beautiful Read..

This was a beautiful story about what it means to love others and oneself. How we may tend to diminish ourselves while caring for others, and how keeping an open heart and open mind can lead to something beautiful.

I will say, I think it was longer than needed and a bit repetitive at times. But I found the overall story to be quite sweet. The relationship was very healing for both Isabelle and River and a testament to showing up constantly for those we love. Including extending our love and courtesy to ourselves.

“A Practical Marriage with a Spinster” by Julia Thorne

-A thoughtful marriage-of-convenience romance with quiet tension and heartfelt growth. River and Isabella’s relationship unfolds gently, with a hero who falls first and deep emotional payoff. I have great sympathy for Isabelle and her sacrifices made for her sister.

Well-written, intelligent, and full of charm—an enjoyable, sweet love story.

This is a story about a woman who is very capable, but due to circumstances she lacks self confidence. She is always trying to be useful, but at the same time be invisible. She marries a man who proposes a marriage of convenience. He soon realizes she is so much more and tries to help her to see her self worth. At times it seemed to drag as the FMC would can some confidence but then overhear something that would set her back. I liked the connection to the past for both characters.

Okay, I Guess

Characters' actions and behavior are not what they should be. They're just not believable in the roles they are set to play. There are many instances wherein the author appears to be not very knowledgeable about the customs of the upper class. For example, breakfast is not eaten in the dining room. The London home of a duke would have a special room designated for that meal. I gave up on the book because of these inaccuracies.

okay story

Was a sweet story. However, was very repetitive. Spoilers! She grew up being put on the back burner because of needs of other people. Then had a hard time believing that her husband could actually end up in love her over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Same insecurity issue from the beginning to the end. No change in dialogue, no new information, just him telling her she’s worthy until she accepts it.

I really wanted to love this one, it was such a soft love, and they were growing together. Not sure if it was how the book was written, or the bad editing but there was a lot of the exact same lines repeated closely together. Isabelle would often say something that she believed, and then just about everyone, including River, would correct her. All the time. And she'd just agree with them.

I came to like the characters, and the romance developed very nicely. I found repeated information to be annoying - mostly that in the heroine's point of view but also that in the hero's. This was a study in letting go of old patterns and it was sappy in places, but I enjoyed the book.

Totally Predictable

I kept reading, holding out hope that there would be some sort of plot twist. There was not. It was entirely predictable to the very last word. Obviously, I can’t recommend you read something you can predict from the first chapter. Instead, I recommend yypass.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Isabelle has spent her youth caring for her sick sister who finally passes away. Then she is unexpectedly noticed by a duke who asks for her hand in marriage. I enjoyed her internal monologue about grief and not having a place in a society so regimental. I enjoyed his initial observations of her.

AI author suspected - research before reading

All of TypewritInk Publishing novels seem like they were written by large language models. Even their website is highly suspect. The authors’ bios are carbon copies of each other and rife with grammatical errors. Geez Louise.

Some thing a little different

I loved this story. River and Isabelle facing so many emotional difficulties and growing together to surmount them. The remembered meeting in the past was a wonderful moment. I recommend this to all who enjoy an exceptional Regency romance.

Duty or Love

This is the story of two people who have learned to suppress their own feelings in order to perform their duty and to be responsible. Will they be able to learn to ignore duty to submit to love?

a Practical Marriage with a Spinster

What a beautiful and moving experience; such a wonderfully written book. I believe there is a little of Isabelle in all of us and how wonderful it was to see her find her true self with River in such an emotionally rich book.

A disappointment

It is dumb and beyond unrealistic. I had high hopes of the beginning but it degenerated into romantic rubbish. No human being has ever talked like the characters in this book. A
disappointment.

Odd book. Repetitive content, over-use of em dashes, improbable audden changes to the storyline. Last half, every chapter felt like it was supposed to be the last one, and then there would be another. The entire last half could have been deleted with no loss. Maybe AI generated?

A sweet romance

This could have been a novella. There is no real conflict, no villain(s), no reason for the plot to drag, like a modern day soap opera. I get that it's a closed door story but must the plot also be closed door?

Powerfully emotional…

Well written, with an easy eloquence that brought tears to my eyes. No buffoonery, no words to define, just an easy, pleasant read…

Absolutely charming and gentle story of a self-effacing spinster and a Duke who has a closed off life. Reminiscent of stories by Mary Balogh. No spice.

Thank you for not having explicit sex. If I want to read pornagrophy I will. I don't want it forced on me in the midst of a good read. Thank you again

Extremely contrived, very repetitive. The book would’ve gained a lot from being 50-100 pages shorter.
