It was free on audible, so I shouldn't be too harsh, but I really did not like this. Pointless dialogue, lots of swearing just for the heck of it, not funny. Uneven writing, inconsistencies, never mind world building. Waste of time, sorry.
I discovered this story when I was looking for a book on Audible and decide to get it and read it since it was free. This is a short story and I was excited to get into a new Zombie story, but this is more along the lines of dark humor concerning Zombies rather than a horror. There is also a lot of vulgar language in this one but still gave me a laugh or two. Not bad for being a short and somewhat entertaining.
A little too short to be a proper story it’s a fun quick listen that gets you interested in the series and introduces you to the characters a bit. Full of action and a bit of humor I think it’s gotten me hooked on the series!
It's a little unfair to rate this as I haven't read any other undead books. I wanted a short listen and this was free from audible. It was entertaining enough and did the trick, I'm sure I would have liked it much better had I been familiar with the characters.
I did find this one pretty fun. it was interesting im finding this series cooler by the moment. the character were so fun and real i think i like that a lot, i usually love zombies stories and if they have some humour on them is a bonus just like this one.
The Undead: Deleted Scene is a teaser trailer to large series of books which I assume take place in this same universe. At the glorious price of $0.00, it's difficult to lodge much of a complaint about it. At the length of an hour, it was something nice to listen to while being stuck in traffic.
The story opens up right into an action scene. A group of survivors is attacked by a horde of zombies. We're slowly introduced to the group consisting of some macho-military type dudes, a couple of woman, and an attack dog which has more personality than the majority of the cast. Easily my favorite character. As this group is attacked, we're given some pretty gruesome descriptions of blood, guts, and violence which is a staple of the zombie genre. After the characters escape, we're treated to them all introducing themselves inside a radio station which was somewhat charming. As the group finishes their introductions, they're once again attacked by the undead and we're left to ponder where this story is going to end up...
I have to admit, while the characters were pretty stereotypical in their actions, demeanor, and attitudes, I'm not exactly looking for someone to re-invent the zombie fiction genre. As an introduction, this serves well because its entertaining, gives you a taste of whats to come in the story, and doesn't try too hard to be something it isn't.
The vocal performance by the narrator was also commendable. At the beginning, I didn't think the narrator was going to do a good job but as I lost myself in the narrative, I slowly began to realize the narrator was much better than I thought.
Overall, I think this teaser trailer accomplishes what it sets out to do and gets people interested in more of the story. It certainly led me to investigate how much the books are, how many of them there are, and look more into the author. Mission accomplished. Unfortunately, since it is just a teaser trailer, there's not much in the way of story to sink my teeth into. Then again, that's what the rest of the series is for.
LOL! This was a free audio download and a first zombie book for me so please read other reviews before deciding to get this or not. For myself, I did more laughing than anything which is not I'm sure the author's intentions. I found the British accent and the constant need for excessive cursing too hilarious to take anything else seriously like the dog running around after ripping off somebody's arm and not wanting to let go of it.
It was a battle of who was toughest and what they were going to do to defend themselves to the end and for me I just could not read another book that was anything like this. I am glad it was short and a glimpse into what I could have purchased and free. I will say it kept me going during my workout as I laughed throughout the whole thing. Please look at other reviews as I'm sure this does not give it any justice it deserves.
This is a great short which introduces the characters and their how they have chosen to fight for their survival. Dan Morgan is fantastic as the narrator as he brings each character to life with a distinct voice that identifies them. While there were some gore and action there was also a lot of levity and camaraderie between the players.

This has made me want to read the series because I already like the characters.
I haven’t read or listened to any of the other books in this series but I definitely will now! This was a great quick story and it did an excellent job of getting me interested in the entire series and the characters. Dan Morgan did a great job narrating. People seem to be complaining about the profanity. Who the F*** cares! It’s the zombie apocalypse. You’d think if you are listening to or reading this type of literature you’d be ok with it. I guess the blood and gore is ok but god forbid you use a curse word when chopping up zombies.
I didn’t expect much world building nor character development since this was “deleted” from a larger story. I’m not a fan of zombies (gasp!) and rarely watch movies/series nor read them, but picked this up. Equally vulgar language gory and fast paced, it’s what I would probably expect from this genre. Dan Morgan is a wonderful narrator and made it easy to listen to this with my morning cup of coffee.
Audiobook given out for free as a would-be enticement to read (and pay for) the other books in the series. Unfortunately, it was not much of an enticement at all if the writing quality is representative. Felt like reading a teenage boy's fantasy about being in a zombie apocalypse and being some epic survivalist with brilliant combat skills that he got from watching anime.
Also fuck you for writing autistic people as "being able to kill without mercy" because they "lack empathy."
I love the author and this was my first foray into the Undead world. I actually wish I had just jumped in and read the first book (I still will do that) as this was fine, but honestly a little underwhelming and had I not read the other awesome books by the author, I might have been put off from getting into the whole series.
Look at me complaining about a freebie!! Ungrateful twat I am!!
This is an interesting story of zombie warriors. I liked the characters but the language is pretty aweful. I don't expect to continue the series but those who like zombie fighting action and don't mind cursing might try this. The Audiobook was free at Audible. My Rating 3.75.
It was a free audiobook on audible and its about zombies, so I thought, why not??? I think I would have liked it better if I had read the previous books in the series, but it just seemed like most other zombie books. It was a quick, easy listen. But I wont be listening to it again.
This was free on audible, There wasn't much of a story to it but was more of an introduction to the characters. They seem interesting but don't know If I'll read more.
Not sure how I feel about this short story. Perhaps the narration took away some from this Audible exclusive book. I really didn’t get much from the telling.
As Kiba Snowpaw, the alpha Ice Wolf from the ice world HowlStrom, I settled into my icy lair, surrounded by the perpetual winter that graced my world every hundred years. A shiver of excitement danced through my fur, not from the cold, but from the anticipation of diving into an experience that promised to be as thrilling as the fiercest snowstorms of HowlStrom. In my paws, I held not a physical book but the audible sensation of R.R. Haywood's “The Undead: Deleted Scene”, narrated with fervor by Dan Morgan.
The story unfolded like the first snowflake of the winter season, unique and holding the promise of something greater. Howie, Dave, and their group of survivors, including the indomitable Meredith the dog, emerged from the blizzard of a zombie apocalypse, their souls as battle-worn yet resilient as the icy terrains of my homeland.
The basic plot was as raw and untethered as the winds that howled through the icy peaks of HowlStrom. After a day fraught with the terror of battling the Undead, the group sought refuge in an abandoned radio station. It was in these desolate yet strangely intimate confines that they chose to record their voices, a testament to their existence in a world where survival was as fleeting as the warmth of the sun during the ice age.
The characters were as diverse as the snowflakes that adorned the icy landscapes of my world, each shaped by the chilling touch of the apocalypse. Howie and Dave stood as the leaders, their spirits as indomitable as the ancient ice warriors of HowlStrom legends. And then there was Meredith, a dog with a warrior’s heart, echoing the feral yet noble spirit of the Ice Wolves.
The narrative structure of the audiobook was akin to the intricate patterns of frost on a windowpane, each chapter unveiling a new layer of complexity. The story’s impact was as profound as the silent descent of snow, covering the world in a blanket of quiet reflection. Amidst the chilling terror of the undead, there bloomed camaraderie and resilience, echoing the unity of the Ice Wolf packs during the harshest winters.
As I, Kiba Snowpaw, delved deeper into the narrative, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the icy resilience of my kind and the unyielding spirit of Howie and his group. The cold, stark world they inhabited was not unlike the icy terrains of HowlStrom, where the cold not only bit at the flesh but tested the spirit.
Yet, amidst the praise, there lurked critique as biting as the frosty winds. The dialogue, at times, was as erratic as the unpredictable storms of HowlStrom. The swearing, though reminiscent of the raw, unfiltered nature of the icy wilderness, at times veered into the territory of excess.
And as the final words of the audiobook echoed in the silent expanse of my icy lair, a conclusion as crisp and clear as the winter air crystallized. “The Undead: Deleted Scene” was a journey through the icy wastelands of the apocalypse, where the chill of death was ever-present, yet where the human spirit burned as brightly as the Northern Lights of HowlStrom.
With quotes like, "In the world of the undead, we find the true measure of a warrior," and "As the frost bites, so does reality," the litRPG elements and the icy narrative intertwine, offering a chilling yet exhilarating experience.
As Kiba Snowpaw, with the icy majesty of HowlStrom reflected in my eyes, I recognized in Howie, Dave, and their band of survivors, the same icy resilience, the unyielding spirit that defined the Ice Wolves. And though the world was gripped in the terror of the undead, in the silent, icy expanse of the apocalypse, like in the icy terrains of HowlStrom, there bloomed a silent, unyielding beauty.
And as the ancient saying goes in the frozen lands of HowlStrom, "In the heart of winter, the soul finds its fire." The Undead, with all its chilling terror and icy resilience, was a journey into the heart of winter, where amidst the biting cold, the soul of humanity burned with an unyielding fire.
This starts out SO GOOD! There are a lot of expletives but I would rather assume that would be true to life if zombies were really roaming the earth.
Being that this is only an hour there is not much story line. There are a lot of characters but the way the are presented is really fun. Meredith is their dog, and of course is my favorite. She’s always bringing home presents of the undead sort, like arms in her mouth, and I can just see her smiling like, HEY look at what I found! I took it from a corpse. Life is awesome! This is exactly how my dogs act (minus the corpse thing).
The ending was fantastic. Reminded me a bit of Iron man. So well done and hilarious.
The narration was great as well. I listen to Nigel Planner very often since I am a Terry Pratchett fan, so he sets the bar very high for narrators. Although Dan Morgan didn’t quite hit THAT mark he made this zombie tale come to life. He’s energetic and puts emphasis on every curse word (there are a lot), and it is almost as if I am actually meeting these characters.
My only criticism is that the audio picks up his every breath or swallow. I cringed a couple of times but it is just like being in a conversation with someone. Just be aware those noises are not edited.
Definitely a story I am curious about. There are 7 parts to this and this portion was free on audible. Loved it.
Received from author, through audiobookreviewer.com, in exchange for an honest review.
this is a quick entertaining read about a group of people on their journey after the zombie Apocalypse begins. it was a brief part of the story that we got to listen to therefore you're missing the main chunk, however it is stated in the title. The narrator dinner and entertaining job, I was a bit confused if one of them was supposed to be female since the narrator does have a manly voice. overall great read.
This deleted scene takes place between Day 15 and 16 in The Undead series.
[2022] I'm now coming back to say I have listened to most of the series now and I have loved every minute of it. This is a fantastic series and I am grateful for this free deleted scene for getting me into it in the first place.
[2021] This was free on Audible and is a good intro to The Undead - a series about a zombie apocalypse, told from the point of view of a group of survivors.
I received this free short story from audible and it was my introduction to this series. It was enough for me to get a sense of the series. I enjoyed the writing and found the characters and story interesting. As a free sample it succeeded to make me interested enough to add another book in the series to my 'to read' list.
