I came into this one already liking Sean, so I won't pretend I was neutral. Third books are tricky. Everything the earlier ones set up has to actually land, and there's no room left to tuck away the threads you forgot about. This one mostly pulls it off.

On paper the situation is bleak. The island is frozen solid, three of the people Sean cares about are each stranded in their own separate mess, and there's a last battle that everyone keeps promising is on the way. Sean jokes through the worst of it, and somewhere along the way you stop hearing it as comic relief and start hearing it for what it is, a scared kid who has decided not to admit he's scared.

The Norse mythology could have turned into a lecture, but the book never stops to explain itself. You absorb it as you go. A school assignment that happens to be water polo against sea serpents tells you everything about how the story operates. It states the strange thing flatly and trusts you to keep up.

It isn't flawless. A few stretches in the middle drift, and there were moments I wanted it to commit to a direction sooner. But by the last page I cared how things shook out, and that's more than a lot of finales get from me. If you've read the first two, this closes the story out in a way you'll be satisfied. And even impressed with.

What I liked most about this book is Sean's voice. He jokes all the time, even when things are scary. That habit says a lot about how he deals with fear and loss, more than any serious speech could.
The world feels strange but real. Sea serpent polo, mice that make prophecies, a dwarf who has read 25,000 prophecies in a basement — none of it gets explained too much. You just go along with Sean, like you already live there too. Under all the jokes, there's real worry. Friends go missing. Winter won't end. The world really is about to end.
I liked how the mystery parts work. Sean has to figure out who the traitor is, where his sister went, and who's trying to kill him. He works it out himself, using small clues from class. It feels earned, not handed to him.
The dialogue is sharp. Sean and his friends talk fast and funny, and even small characters feel real in just a few lines. The book also knows when to slow down — a dad's hand on a shoulder, a mom's quiet words — right next to jokes about cursed weapons. That mix works better than I expected.
If you like a funny narrator who still takes the danger seriously, this book is worth picking up.

Broken Roads is a clear, moving fantasy that focuses on people more than spectacle. The world feels worn and real: ruined towns, tired travelers, and small details that show a lived-in history. The prose is plain and direct, so the story stays easy to follow. Dialogue sounds natural, and short descriptions set scenes without slowing the plot.

Seán is at the center, and his loyalty and choices give the story heart. He faces hard decisions that show what kind of person he is, and his relationships with friends add emotional weight. Action scenes are sharp and effective but not overwhelming; the quieter moments — searching wrecked houses, treating wounds, remembering better times — make the stakes feel personal. The pace sometimes eases into slower scenes, but the story keeps moving toward a satisfying finish. Themes of duty, survival, and sacrifice are presented simply and honestly. Overall, this is a thoughtful, easy-to-read installment that will please readers who like grounded, character-led fantasy.

The first few chapters are kind of slow and dry. I almost put it down a few times, but kept going. After that, it gets interesting with lots of action and drama that keeps things moving. The thing that kept me reading was the patter. The author has a casual, jocular story-telling style that he keeps up all the way through the book. It’s a bit like if Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes had grown up and had been put in a hero’s role in a world with gods and other mystical creatures. Speaking of which, the world is complex. There are a lot of different characters and sometimes I had trouble remembering who was who, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the story. There is a love interest but the relationship doesn’t suck up a lot of the time or effort which I found refreshing. This is the third book in the series. I haven’t read the first two, but I didn’t have much trouble getting a grasp on things.

A Funny, Heartfelt Fantasy Adventure

The Last Battle, Book 3 of Seán’s Saga, is a funny, heartfelt fantasy adventure with real emotional weight. Seán is a memorable hero because his humor, loyalty, and honesty make him feel genuine even when the danger around him grows serious. The world is strange and vivid, filled with ruined towns, endless winter, sea serpents, prophetic mice, outlaws, and magic that feels lived in rather than overexplained.
What I enjoyed most was the balance of mystery, action, and quieter moments that show friendship, courage, and sacrifice. The story has plenty of tension, but it also has warmth and wit. Some early parts move slowly, but they add depth. Overall, this is an engaging, easy-to-read fantasy for readers who like character-driven adventures with heart.

This is an amazing conclusion to the trilogy! From start to finish I was riveted to the thrills and spills of Ragnarok!

Throughout this trilogy the story flows from each page building a picture in your mind, allowing the reader to participate as the action happens. This is a rare talent, among fantasy authors in particular, and it's what sealed this trilogy as an Epic for me. Throughout this whole trilogy I lived, breathed, ate and slept the lives of our Heroes, Valkyries, Gods and more as the pages kept turning.

If you love adventures, thrills, danger, genuine characters that are completely realistic, a deep love of myth and legends then this is the book, the tale, the trilogy for you, the reader, no matter what your age.

I definitely recommend this book and this trilogy to everyone.

I own a softback copy of this book.

Hate when final books spend half the time talking

Usually by the third installment, authors get completely lost in their own mythology and spend the first two hundred pages having characters sit around tables planning. Glad this didn't do that. It jumps straight into pure, unhinged chaos with everyone scattered and panicking. The narrator has this sarcastic, self-deprecating streak that could easily get obnoxious, but it works because the stakes feel genuinely suffocating this time around. You can tell the kid is using jokes as a shield while everything around him falls apart at the seams. It actally balances the goofy, absurd stuff with that sickening feeling that things are definitely not going to end neatly. Read the back half in one sitting on a rainy Sunday because the momentum just refused to let up.

Eric Tanafon’s The Last Battle, the triumphant finale to Sean’s Saga, delivers an incredible, action-packed conclusion that far exceeds every expectation. Tanafon brilliantly balances his signature sarcastic wit with excellent high-stakes Norse mythological fantasy, bringing Sean, Fiona, Arturo, and Parvati’s journey to a deeply satisfying end. The story weaves some great heart-pounding battles, tragic sacrifices, and hilarious banter seamlessly, showing incredible growth in Sean as a hero. Facing down prophecies and apocalyptic odds, the narrative keeps you hooked from start to finish. It is a masterful, deeply emotional, and entertaining finale that every modern fantasy fan needs on their shelf.
