Sebastian (Seb) Taylor and Rebecca Whiteman had always dreamed of a life long future together when they were younger, but disaster strikes which changes both of their futures.

Eighteen years later Rebecca returns to her home town of Macksville NSW with her two daughters. Having recently just been through a messy divorce, Rebecca knows being back in her home town and close to her parents will mean she will get a bit more support which is just what she requires. Working at the local hospital, Rebecca runs into Seb who is getting his dressings changed. He too has returned to his home town to recover from his injuries from being an elite Australian SAS soldier.

Although eighteen years have past between Seb and Rebecca it's obvious they still have feelings for each other, but is it too late for them to act on those feelings? Is what they shared all those years ago just distant memories? As the story unfolds it's clear that not all is as it seems when strange things start to happen which has Rebecca concerned.

Once again Aussie author Karly Lane has written another entertaining novel which I found hard to put down. With twists, turns, suspense and romance, this book will not disappoint. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this book as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

BURNT is the first Karly Lane book I have read – and I am so glad there are more to read because I loved this one! It has been eighteen years since the events in the prologue shattered the lives of many families in this small country town in NSW, and although we aren’t initially told what has happened we certainly know it has made a big impact on both Rebecca and Seb.

Rebecca is a nurse at the local hospital and has moved back to be near her parents so that she has someone to care for her girls while she is on night shifts. She also volunteers at ta a nearby women’s shelter – patching up battered women who are trying to start a new life. While her ex-husband didn’t physically abuse her she was mentally abused – so can relate to her patients. Having a little knowledge in this area – the scenes in the shelter were very realistic. She bumps into Seb when he comes into the hospital to have his dressings changed and the two realise that their feelings haven’t gone away.

What follows is a lovely story of two lovers reuniting and deciding if they have a future. But with Rebecca getting heavy breathing calls, a slashed tent when they go camping and a stranger talking to her children from a car – Seb realises Rebecca is in trouble – even though Rebecca doesn’t take it seriously. But who is stalking her and why? Seb want’s to help – but he is too emotionally scarred to take a chance on love. He can face a battlefield of enemy – but one tiny lady scares him silly.

BURNT has it all – drama, romance and humour. With lots of twists and turns, some great support characters and back stories, and a climax that will have you on the edge of your seat,

I heartily recommend this book. And will certainly be looking up her previous ones.

With thanks to Harlequin MIRA Australia and the author via Netgalley for my copy to read and review.

The terrible accident which changed Sebastian Taylor and Rebecca Whiteman’s lives forever was still as much a part of them as it was when it happened eighteen years before. Seb had gone on to become an elite Australian SAS soldier, and had just arrived home to recuperate from the dreadful injuries he’d received on his last tour of duty. Rebecca had returned home with her two girls, Sarah and Natalie, to her parents’ home, recovering from a bitter divorce.

Rebecca’s first realization of Seb being home came when he arrived at the hospital to have his dressings changed; it fell to her in her capacity as a nurse to attend to him. The shock they both felt when they were confronted with each other was intense.

Living in the rural community of Macksville in northern NSW, there wasn’t much chance of avoiding one another – the extremely tentative friendship they both needed seemed fraught with memories neither of them could forget. But there was danger in their midst; odd things were happening – was it worth worrying about, was it just Bec’s imagination?

I love Karly Lane’s work, and this was no exception! The suspense throughout this book is gripping, making it very hard to put down. If you enjoy the romantic suspense genre, this is definitely one for you! Highly recommended.

I honestly can’t believe what a roll I’ve been on with the last few books that I’ve read – oh wait, yes I can because they’re all Aussie authors!

To add to that elation, there are also times when a book’s blurb so aptly alludes to the story held within its beautiful cover that I figure there’s no use in me competing with it. This is just one of those times which means that instead of giving my own short synopsis, I’m going to get right into what I loved about the book.

Having been a fan of Karly Lane’s writing for some time now (ever since I read Bridie's Choice) and, while it took me some time to get to this novel, I read it in a day! Her writing is fast-paced, her stories believable and her characters people we can identify with.

In Burnt, Karly ("Rural Fiction's favourite daughter") brings us a story about two people dealing with their own very different but difficult situations and gives us a fast-paced but moving tale about families and relationships.

As always, she captures the tensions well, from the sexual to the external giving us a winning combination of romance and suspense which she builds around two complex characters, using her setting to her advantage - in this instance, the beautiful but rugged and unassuming national park bordering the town where Bec and Seb live.

Karly (also known as Karly Blakemore-Mowle) has proved to be a versatile author who can take just about any subject and write about it with warmth, empathy and authenticity and I found the thread involving Seb and his dad so very poignant as it added a whole new layer to both the story and his character.

At its heart, this story is one about healing, hope, families, redemption, the conflict and resolution between a father and son and coming to terms with our pasts in order to move on with our future.

It’s a really entertaining and moving novel with a gripping plot that will see you turning the pages long into the night.

Burnt is about two people who found love again. Sebastian (Seb) Taylor and Rebecca Whiteman were involved in an incident at high school that affected their lives forever. Eighteen years later, they met again when Rebecca Whiteman came home with her children and Sebastian (Seb) Taylor recovery from injury at his father's house. However, Rebecca Whiteman brought with her a stalker, so she did not need the complications of childhood love. The readers of Burnt will continue to follow Rebecca Whiteman and Sebastian (Seb)Taylor to find out what happens.

Burnt is another fantastic book by Karly Lane. I enjoy Karly Lane's writing style and engaging me with her plots and characters. Burnt continued my enjoyment with Karly Lane's books. I love Karly Lane's portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Burnt is well written and researched by Karly Lane. I like Karly Lane description of the settings of Burnt that allowed me to imagine being part of the plot of the book.

The readers of Burnt will understand what can happen to elite soldiers when they return from employment injured. Also, the readers of Burnt will learn about living in a small rural community of Macksville, New South Wales.

I recommend this book.

Book #16 for #aww2015
Karly Lane is a bestselling Australian author who first self-published Burnt in 2013, since then it has found a new home with Harlequin and released in April.

Burnt is set in Lane’s hometown of Macksville in NSW. It’s the small hometown of teenage sweethearts Sebastian Taylor and Rebecca Whiteman, who had their lives tragically torn apart in an accident and left town soon after.

Eighteen years later and both find themselves back in town; Rebecca is newly divorced and looking for a fresh start. Returning home is the best option for Rebecca as it allows her parents to be there for support and help with her two young daughters. The book begins with Rebecca living with her parents and working at the local hospital but she soon finds a rental and starts her new life of independence with her girls.

Sebastian Taylor fled town to join the army after the accident and he hasn’t been back. Now an elite SAS soldier Sebastian finds himself seriously injured and returns home to heal. It is soon apparent that not all the demons he’s running from are in his head. The town has not forgiven Sebastian for the accident and his relationship with his father has never been good.

Burnt is a tale of first love reunited, but does it follow that the love will be rekindled? I love stories of first love reunited. Who of us hasn’t, at one point or another, thought back on our first love and wondered what would happen if we ran into one another again.

Big strength is the give and take between Bec and Seb. He is wounded, both physically and emotionally, but still strong and capable. The ending scenes has some surprises and the HEA did not come quickly or easily, but was very satisfying

Burnt may be one of Karly's oldies, but it's a goodie!

Rebecca Whiteman and Sebastian Taylor were once teenage sweethearts, destined to be together forever. That's until a tragic car accident tore them apart. Seb enlisted in the Australian Army and Rebecca turned to a career in nursing.

Eighteen years later, they are reunited once more.

Rebecca is now a divorced mother of two young girls and Seb has been involved in the SAS. Circumstances have led them back to their hometown and it's obvious that they are still crazy about each other. However they're going to have to work through some pretty hard-hitting issues before they can move forward with their relationship. Get ready for plenty of angst!

Grief and domestic abuse/violence are common themes in Burnt, and it's quite confronting. Karly really shines though with the heart in the throat action and suspense which comes later on the read.

Seb has to be my favourite character though. This soldier is so broken, yet is hardened due to Army life. Not only is he shouldering guilt for an accident that wasn't his fault, he's also forced to accept that his father isn't as healthy as before. Add in his reluctance to actually commit to Rebecca and her girls despite his sheer love and over protectiveness and you've got one man that you can't help fall in love with.

Everything you'd expect from Karly as always!

I was expecting the average run-of-the-mill girl meets boy cute rural romance but I was taken aback by the stories content - not what I was anticipating from a Karly Lane novel at all. The author touched on topics such as domestic violence and mental illness, two sensitive topics that are always hard to read about, they’re highly important issues that need to be told and talked about and not swept under the rug.

Rebecca and Seb were two awesome central characters, very believable and very well written.
But the most memorable and gripping part for me was the second half of the novel which read like an action-packed military thriller, oh my gosh, the suspense… I loved it!

Burnt is set in Macksville, NSW, the authors hometown. Hubby and I have driven past Macksville many times, well, it’s now on the ‘places to visit and explore’ list.

4.5 second chance stars

Karly Lane is a new-to-me author, but I will definitely be heading back to read more of her work.

Rebecca and Sebastian's is a beautiful second chance romance. 18 years after their lives changed irreparably, their lives are thrown together once more.

They say your first love never really dies, and after all these years, you could still feel the pull between them. No matter what water was under the bridge, they still have feelings for each other.

Oh man, does this pull at your heartstrings. As we learn more and more about what happened in the past and how it has shaped their futures, I couldn't help but shed a tear.

I so wanted them to get things on track again, but things were never meant to be easy.

Besides fighting their feelings for each other, there is a fair dose of suspense thrown in to the story too which stirs things up a little. We are in for one bumpy ride.

I loved that this was a slow burn kind of story, more about hearts than sex.

So, can Seb and Bec go back to how they were all those years ago and have their HEA? Or has too much happened that will keep them apart?

Nope for that you are going to have to read for yourself.

I loved that this is set in a small rural town. I live in a rural town about the same size as where Burnt is set, so I could feel the small town vibe, where everyone knows your business and there are no secrets.

I definitely look forward to reading more Karly Lane works in my future.

Burnt by Karly Lane had it all. A varied mix of emotions that pulled the heart strings, brought about the sniffles and had this reader cheering throughout :) Bec and Seb completely grabbed my attention in the story from start to finish. Their hilarious, often sarcastic dialogue, as well as some heated moments with lots of drama, suspense, unfinished history and boundless chemistry entertained this reader. The story has it's share of charming and nasty characters and the many twists within the story were a tad terrifying at times, devastating at others, but also with its share of laughable moments, which in all was stunningly written by the Author that made for an unmissable read.

I enjoyed this book, as much as the previous Karly Lane novels I have read. This story is set in Lane's hometown of Macksville, New South Wales, and is centred around Rebecca and Seb ; former high school sweethearts who return to their hometown after a tragedy that ripped them apart 18 years previously.
I am such a sucker for a second chance romance...my favourite kind to be honest!!

What an amazing book! The best so far from Karly. I could not put it down. I loved everything about it. The suspense and mystery and trying to piece together who was stalking Bec. Plus, every girl likes a war hero like Seb :) It was touching to see him finally face his demons in the end.

Loved reading this book and was written so well that it holds the reader's interest till the very end. I enjoy reading Author Karly 's books.

The relationship between Sebastian and Rebecca Whiteman changed their lives forever due to an incident that happened 18 years back. After these long years both of them return home to Macksville. Sebastian has returned to his Dad's place to heal from the wounds he sustained as a result of his last tour as an Elite SAS Soldier in the Australian Army and Rebecca returns to her parents house with her two daughter's after a painful divorce . She start's working as a nurse and hopes to start a new life for herself and the girl's.

Being a small knit community both Rebecca and Sebastian cannot avoid each other forever. Both of them have memories that is hard to forget and let go. But will they be able to go past all that and re-unite ? The suspense in the story is gripping. A fantastic romantic suspense.

This novel tells the story of Rebecca and Seb who were once high school sweethearts until a devastating accident saw them go in opposite directions. Rebecca has moved back to her hometown, now a divorced mother of 2 little girls and Seb has come home temporarily from his posting in the army as an SAS specialist after experiencing injuries after an incident in Afghanistan. Can they reunite as a couple? Rebecca has been receiving some disturbing phone calls which put her on edge as well as being a nurse, she has taken on supporting a local womens shelter as well, are these connected?

This novel took a while for me to become fully engaged with but really picked up the pace about 2/3rds of the way in and I finished the rest in one night.
I would class this novel as romantic suspense and it is an easy read for readers of Womens Fiction and rural stories.

Sebastian and Rebecca are high school sweethearts and a night out on a stormy night changes their lives forever! It's a tragedy that puts both of them on to a different future as both are racked by the suffering and yet it is deemed that their paths will cross! Seb turns his hardened soul into the rigors of the elite SAS of the Australian Army. And, Rebecca fulfils her dream of a specialist nurse. However the past eighteen years bring them back to their home town; Seb to recuperate from drastic injuries and Rebecca to find shelter with her parents after a failed marriage and raising two children. Yes, their paths do cross, but a vengeful string from the past does burn and threaten their future!!

Another wonderful Karly Lane. This is simply beautiful, a wonderful read.
Very few authors write difficult subjects better than Karly. She never preaches or labors the point, leaving the reader to make their own conclusions but she writes so sympathetically that you'd never miss the point.
Tense, delightful, full of the wonderful Australian bush Karlie knows so well and incredibly moving. The characters are very real and relatable. Definitely one of the most beautiful books I've read in a while - probably since the last Karly Lane I read. Absolutely loved it.

An ebook from the library so much fun. I am glad to have read this book now that was set in Macksville which I visited sometime ago. Some mystery, coming back home after sometime away can be nerve racking, does time heal or gets buried n surfaces when memories of places n people?

I really enjoyed Burnt, with so much on offer. Drama, love, country living.
It was a challenge in parts, to understand why people hurt others.
But worth reading for another perspective on life. Not everyone has a story you can see.
