Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.
He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).
The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.

What an excellet intro to Beatrix. I enjoyed it enough that I jumped to #.2. Good short stories and getting to know her.

QUICK, PROFESSIONAL, AND DEADLY
I read and enjoyed the first Beatrix Rose novel, In Cold Blood. Before moving on to the next Beatrix adventure, I wanted to check out the Hong Kong stories trio of novellas to get the scoop on Beatrix's background history. This first entry, White Devil, was a great introduction to the character, her skill set, and the driving force behind her actions...I'm immediately moving on to the next novella in the series...

Book 1, in the Beatrix Rose: Hong Kong Stories (trilogy)
In this story (84 pages novella) Beatrix is in Hong Kong to find some needed cash for the search in her beloved daughter Isabella who disappeared without a trace. The opportunity presented itself unexpectedly when her particular skills were needed by the Triad.
Intriguing and action-packed this fast paced mystery is a great read. It may be short, to the point with no frills and unnecessary words but the author knows how to place the right amount of punch to push the excitement to the limit.
This little book is unputdownable

I enjoyed a chance to fill in some blanks on a favorite character as I had listened to her untimely end a while back. It doesn't quite get her from being shot at her house and escaping the grips of Control and group 15, but is close enough to her starting new life in Hong Kong. I can't exactly say Dawsons description makes me want to visit there between the crowded conditions and lawlessness, but am sure all were hyped to achieve desired effect. I listened to all three of the Hong Kong stories so kind of ran together with people being dismembered and such, but the gist is she is hiding, meets Chau, Chow, little cleaner dude who seems meek but is oddly skilled with pistol as he attends to main job of cleaning up gore left by the triad. Manages to piss off a boss by not offing his girlfriend (morals which will be contradicted later) so Beatrix repays him favor and saves him from doom. The fruitless attempt to look for Isabelle drives much of her motivation, and then Grace enters the picture to show a softer side of the assassin. Regret that the poor girls childhood is taken, hate that, and in the end she ends up in a better place but forever changed. Unreal that big boss wouldn't just do B in, (fast healing skills after beating as well) but alas there is an even bigger boss she manages to impress which takes us into her big solo adventure. People really need to experience her origin story for the full picture, one of the John Milton books covers that though not sure which. Her daughter is carrying on with all she learned with the advantages of genetics, and Pope so we shall see where that goes.

This was my first introduction to Beatrix so wasn’t sure what to expect. All I can say is loved it!!
This is a novella and is the first in a trilogy and are set in Hong Kong. Beatrix is an ex government assassin currently hiding out and has her own hidden agenda of finding her daughter. Unfortunately in this book she becomes involved with the Triads despite trying to mind her own business when in a bar having a quite drink.
As this is a novella if I went into any more detail it wouldn’t be worth you reading the book and unfortunately (or fortunately) depending on how you view things, this isn’t going to happen.
If you liked this review and wish to know more then I suggest you pick up the books and make sure you have an hour or more spare so you can sit and read in one sitting like I did.
Well done Mr Dawson on another fantastic book.
Off to read Book 2 in the series now.

Early Beatrix Rose with the focus on how she prepared for her revenge while lying low in Hong Kong.
Being inconspicuous is one of her trademark skills but out on the night trying to get drunk she gets chatted up. Although not interested she appreciates the effort and when three men single him out later in the bar she can't help lifting her head above the parapet.
This brings trouble to her door as the thugs who she helps take out are triads and she has displeased the crime lord who will not rest without retribution.
Already on the run, she can go deeper underground or try to forge new alliances.
Fast action packed thriller the pages that turn Beatrix Rose into a woman we'd all want to be on our side. Easy reading and full of the authors bright and creative writing that carries a great story in this first of three short tales from Hong Kong.

Nice little story by Mark Dawson, good cultural ,aesthetic research of HongKong, I wish it were a bit more action involved in it.Page turner, fun read, guilt free pleasure without disturbing aspects about melting pot of Asia.

I enjoyed this book very much but stupidly was not aware it was a short story. So a star off as it was very short. Not sure if I want to pay any more money for the next one.

She slid it up, her blue eyes flashing beneath it.
“You won’t,” she said. “I’ll find you.”
And just like that it was over… I couldn’t believe it. I scrolled to the top and bottom twice checking if it was really over. Oh my goodness. Mind blowing. I love Beatrix and I also love Chau such an odd pair but it worked. It worked beautifully. The writing and the story just flows. I need the second book.
This book left me wanting me more. Can I give it 6/5 stars? Now this is what you call a good thriller. Just brilliant.
Ok now that I’m done gushing about it, let me give you a summary:
Meet Beatrix Rose, former British Intelligence officer. She left the agency after uncovering information that made her a liability to the agency. Like the saying goes “if I tell you, I’ll have to kill you”, after realising that her life was now at risk, she fled the country but not before the British Intelligence agency popularly known as Group15 could kidnap her daughter and kill her husband.
Beatrix is now in Hong Kong China, trying to find ways of finding her daughter without drawing too much attention to herself lest the agency tracks her down and sends one of the maybe agents after her. Beatrix can’t seem to stay out of trouble though. She and Chau, a stranger she met at a bar one night find themselves being hunted by the Triad, a notorious Chinese gang. They have to trust each other and survive together.
This book honestly ended too soon. It’s my third book I’ve ready by Mark Dawson and he has stolen my heart. I hope Beatrix and John Milton meet too. See, that would blow my mind. Haha… if you know, you know.

A Quick and Entertaining Read
I read White Devil because I was already a fan of Mark's John Milton series. I saw that the novels in this series were considerably shorter and was looking for something of that nature. Short and sweet,I guess you could say. Well, this certainly fit the bill at under 90 pages it was definitely short but anything but sweet. Beatrix kicks ass and has great taste in motorcycles. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. If you want a well written but not so long novel with plenty of grit and a vibrant imagery then get a copy today. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

The first of the the Hong Kong Beatrix Rose trio, this one is not that long, probably only 125 pages, but quite satisfying.
I amended my 'star' score down to 4 because I realised that the narrative is a bit too simple for a 5, especially when one considers Dawson's great Milton series.
But it still gives one a history behind the "earlier" Beatrix Rose books that brought the series to 'an end'.
If you like Mark Dawson's stuff, you'll like it. Don't look for anything very clever in this book, that's all.

Like most, I discovered Beatrix during her association with John Milton. I was delighted to see Mark write these novels, both to fill in the missing years, and because I am selfish and love reading Beatrix's adventures.
Mark did a great job of making Beatrix's behavior realistic as she works through the pain. I felt like I was right there beside her trying to help her.

My first Beatrix Rose book after her introduction to her in Mark Dawson's Ghosts My Review here( https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)
Only a Short novella but a fine one at that it cuts straight to the bone as we find how Rose settled in Hong Kong after the events of Said Ghosts.
This is such a good little read that anyone that's a fan of this genre I urge to give this a go fantastic read.
Well worth your time and hard earned cash.

Good story with hooks for future episodes. Heroines first encounter with the evil forces is shocking, the others are well executed. Interesting concept, betrayed loyal worker now on the outs with the establishment. Not unlike authors (Mark Dawson) other main characters. The White Devil heroine is too easily identifiable in the current setting. Also instead of retaliating against the establishment she is taking on another mission finding a missing daughter. I will keep following this series.

I am back in the world of Beatrice Rose. I read her first two titles back in 2015. Then recently I read the first 2 issues of her Comixology Unlimited title. And I got hooked again. I think I will read her 3rd novel next to complete the original trilogy. Then come back and finish the Hong Kong trilogy. THEN move on to the Isabella Rose thrillers. Whole still reading the monthly Comixology title. Loved White Devil.

Knowing about Beatrix whetted my appetite to know more... She is unparalleled and she sparks interest and awe in the way she does things. The only question i had was how did she get stabbed so quickly without any resistance but, it had to happen to make the story unfold... I’ll be following Beatrix.

After reading and enjoying the John Milton series by this author, I couldn't resist this series of 3 novellas. I seem to recall Beatrix Rose was a part of at least 2 of the John Milton series. This first in the series was a good read, as was all the John Milton books, and I'm looking forward to reading #2 and #3 about Beatrix.

An easy book to read.
Quite gruesome at times.Very descriptive and as usual the author is very well versed.His knowledge of the areas he writes about is excellent and he transports you to another world with ease which keeps you wanting more..

A short book, but filled with action. The Beatrix character is one I'm particularly fond of. She's beautiful, smart and deadly. She's in Hong Kong in this story, and manages to get herself into and then out of trouble, earning a tidy sum in the process. A very entertaining read.

What a woman! What a book! This is one you cannot put down.
Incredible but yet credible. Given the character of Beatrix Rose, our reader lives through the eyes and courage of this enigmatic heroine.

Finally got the time to expand my knowledge about Group Fifteen and its aftermath. For those who have read the series about John Milton will recognize the name and character of Beatrix Rose. Now we get to know more about her. So far it's really good.

Beatrix Rose is one of the toughest most capable characters we met in the John Milton book series. This first book of a series for her was shorter but intetesting. I look forward to reading more in the series.
