I Would Walk Five Hundred Miles: A Memoir of Learning You Have Always Been Enough

What happens when a bestselling author walks the Camino de Santiago?

“Dietrich is a Southern Garrison Keillor.”Library Journal

“Sean Dietrich can spin a story.”Southern Living

When Sean Dietrich—known to millions as "Sean of the South"—and his wife, Jamie, set out to walk the Camino de Santiago, they weren't just looking for a hike. They were looking for a way to carry their lives across five hundred miles of Spanish mud, ancient stone, and the kind of exhaustion that strips a soul down to its genuine marrow.

Combining grit, humor, ancient wisdom, and quiet wonder into an inspiring tale of endurance, I Would Walk 500 Miles is a modern chronicle of the human spirit. This story, dazzling in its raw simplicity and heartfelt depth, follows a man and his wife as they leave the comforts of home to traverse the legendary Camino de Santiago—an 800-kilometer pilgrimage across the rugged face of Spain.

What begins as a grueling physical challenge soon transforms into a profound journey of spiritual self-discovery. Along the way, they encounter a "kitchen drawer" of fellow seekers who share the snoring symphonies of crowded albergues and the sacred silence of the open road. As the miles strip away the noise of the modern world, the search for a destination becomes a a memoir of learning that you have always been enough.

Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, this story is an eternal testament to the transforming power of persistence. It is a reminder that the greatest treasures are rarely found at the end of the map, but in the soul that finally realizes it already has everything it needs to find everything that matters.

Forever a Sean Dietrich fan and this book cemented that even more firmly. I chose my first “reading” to be the audio version and instead of my normal listening at 1.7 speed, I listened at normal speed. Good choice on my part!

Sean and Jamie share telling their Camino journey and while I followed along last year while they walked, these entries from their journals were so inspiring to listen to as they told their Camino journey in their own words and with inflection and emotion. It was such an inspiring and meaningful story to listen to. I am so grateful that they did this joint project. It is truly a gift.

I doubt that walking the Camino is in my future but I am a huge fan of reading and learning more about those who accept the challenge. Inspirational? Yes! Will it leave a lasting impression on me? Absolutely. Don’t miss the epilogue—- it is the heart of it all.

Thanks to these two pilgrims for taking us all along on the trail. Buen Camino!

So great!

I couldn’t put it down. And then when I had to, I thought about it constantly until I could get back to it.

I love everything by Sean Dietrich and it was wonderful to see Jamie’s thoughts included in this one! A delightful adventure memoir that will make you laugh and cry and think about booking a ticket to Spain for a very long walk.

My first Sean Dietrich book and I loved it!

I’ve read many Camino books, and this is right up there with The Way My Way by Bill Bennet, although very different in tone.

Will definitely be reading more by this author.
