I’m staring at the wall and that’s not even helping. This book broke me in so many ways, but it put me back together and it’s such a masterpiece of a story.

Ughh this book was a whole experience I devoured it so fast the way I grew to love both of these characters Shiloh and Donovan but something about Shiloh really drew me into him as a character and I couldn’t place what it was about him.
Shiloh my killer baddie ughh my broken boy I love him so much he has been through so much and went though life thinking he isn’t good enough and so broken but when he gotta met Donovan you could tell the switch went off in him. He seemed to be at ease and he learned so much about himself he didn’t see before because Donovan helped him see himself in new ways and I can’t my heart these boys have my heart my souls my tears, everything I’m obsessed with them
Donovan is such a green flag he is one of the greenest green flags the way his character felt like sunshine and it was like he was there to help Shiloh like they were made for each other which I do think they were. The way they instantly clicked the first time meeting in the alley to the very end we got to see them grow not only as individuals but we got to see their relationship blossom into something beautiful in their own way.
The whole book we watched them change and grow and it felt like we were watching a love story that’s what it felt likes they seemed so real to me more than a story it felt I was watching their relationship blossom in front of me. I swear they were meant to be together like they completed each other like I think they were soulmates and I’m standing by this and I’m kit even done. I’m so drawn to them both of them together and separate like this book is just a pure masterpiece, so much is happening but it’s so damn good
Shiloh and Donovan my baby boys I love them so much and this book is in my top 2 of this year and maybe of all time. That’s how good this was to me the way I was left speechless and staring at the wall when I finished even tho it finished me. I just love this book so much and I just need more I didn’t want this to end I didn’t wanna leave Shiloh and Donovan think they are up there with my top couples in mm books just cause of their chemistry and everything!!!

Also throughout I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was gonna happen next and I absolutely love books that do that the adrenaline rush that comes through me like I’m obsessed
Lee McCormick and B Ripley are just phenomenal when it comes to writing. The way they incorporated so many emotions and feelings that it just elevated the whole story for me the way I was instantly drawn into this book and the way I was left sobbing so hard I couldn’t see the pages for a bit like I’m so obsessed with their writing and THEY HAVE DONE IT AGAIN

Sometimes I think I’m being too generous with my six star shelf but idgaf, I loved this. I devoured it with the intensity that Shiloh wanted to be devoured whole by Donovan.

How can you not love a black cat serial k1ller + a golden retriever hockey player?! I loved everything about this book except I wish it had been longer! I could have used a little more detail and time spent in different scenes. I love Donovan and Shiloh together 🥺 And I’m very curious about Oakley and Jude’s story!

This was so refreshing. I’ve read so many romance novels that there isn’t much that surprises me anymore, but I can honestly say that I’ve never read anything like the combination of tropes in this book.
Shiloh is such an interesting character. This book has the staples of a dark romance - stalking, blood play, a tiny bit of murder - but the trajectory of Shiloh’s character growth and the resolution to the third-act drama took me by surprise, in a good way. The way that the two characters lean on each other is so sweet and really very touching.
I really enjoyed this, particularly as the start to a new series. I’m excited for the next one.

Yum yum, delish!
I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of this book, considering the two other books I’ve read by this author weren’t exactly my favorites. So cue my surprise when I was hooked 15% in and barely set this book down!
I think, the heart and soul of this book is Shiloh and why it works the way that it does and why it works so well. Shiloh is such an interesting protagonist (antagonistic antihero?), and I truly think the book is so good because of him. If he had been written any other way, I feel like the book could’ve come off as hokey or trying too hard to be serious. Shiloh was the perfect blend of dark, but needy. Independent and mysterious, but insecure and possessive. There were times where his sections were veering into the melodrama of “I only know darkness and sin”, but not so much that I wanted to put the book down.
I also enjoyed Donovan and how, for a “sunshine” character, he had depth and was more than just a sweet person who’s done nothing wrong his entire life. Donovan was detached and (mostly) even-tempered and I liked his dynamic with Shiloh a lot. He was there for him and, for the most part, didn’t push Shiloh to be anything more than what he was. He liked Shiloh for exactly who he was, even before he KNEW who Shiloh was. I also appreciated that Donovan was a character with agency instead of being an innocent angel that’s infantallized which I feel often happens in dark romances like this.
Do I think it was a bit unrealistic for how chill Donovan was with Shiloh stealing from him, breaking into his apartment, etc? Sure, but I also think it sort of makes sense for a character who’s so removed from his own life to be intrigued/fascinated by someone like Shiloh, so I give that a pass!
I honestly just loved how smoothly the book went, too. It was fast, but their romance still felt evenly paced. It has violence, but it wasn’t over the top. It had smut, but there wasn’t too much of it, and while it was bordering on kinky, it never went overboard and it stayed hot throughout the whole book.
And, the book gave me enough information about Oakley and Jude’s relationship to get me interested without taking over this book, which is something I’ll always love! You can set up a sequel in the same series without it taking up a hefty portion of the book before it!
I do think my one complaint is that Shiloh’s murdering is justified. I suppose I was hoping he was just a psycho that killed to kill and not because of a deeper meaning, but that might just be my preference! Perhaps I watched Hannibal (the TV show) too young and my love for dark romance has been skewed by that show and their romance. I still enjoy that Shiloh killed for his art and he wasn’t totally a vigilante, but would I have liked it more if he was just a serial killer?? Absolutely! But that’s just a me thing 🤭
All in all, I really enjoyed my time with this book and I never thought I’d be feeling maternal over a serial killer, but here we are 🥹 that’s my baby boy!

Shiloh was somehow different from our usual psycho killer, not only because of his size. And because I don’t want to spoil anything, I shouldn’t be saying more, but regardless of anything, I loved him! He was so genuinely hilarious trying to convince Donovan that he should be afraid and failing beautifully at that 😄
And Donovan, sweet but fiercely protective, wearing his heart on his sleeve 🥹

I really enjoyed this! I usually really enjoy the amount of darkness books written or co-written by Lee McCormick have, and this one is no exception. I loved Donovan and Shiloh so much! I loved Donovan's golden retriever energy and Shiloh was the perfect black cat to go with that golden retriever. The story was action packed and I really enjoyed that. I was waiting to see how and when would Shiloh come clean about himself, while I was scared to see how Donovan would react to it. Neither of them had a totally easy childhood, but Donovan's was better than Shiloh's and my heart went out to them.
It was great to see Shiloh trust Donovan and be honest and open with him. And Donovan finally found someone who sees him for himself.
This was a fun read and I'm excited to read Oakley and Jude's story!

July 26, 2026I was looking forward to this one, but it was an almost immediate DNF.
Serial killers are just not my thing, especially when they’re murdering random innocent people. No trope-shaming if that’s your jam, but I simply don’t have the imaginative capacity to romanticize someone like that.
And serial killer plus hockey player? That combination is as jarring to me as it was in Bltz’d. It’s like chocolate and sardines.
To top it off, the serial killer is also a petite college student. Had I kept reading, I wouldn’t have been shocked if he turned out to have flaming red hair and a precocious grade-school sibling he was raising. It started to feel like someone was checking off a list of all my least favorite tropes and features.

I read two dark romances back to back, so unfortunately, I couldn't help but compare them. Maybe if I'd read this after a different genre, it would have hit differently, and I would have loved it. It's clearly hitting the mark with a lot of readers.
I did enjoy the story; I just didn't feel the chemistry between the MCs. I also thought it was going to be darker. That said, I absolutely loved Oakley, and I'm really looking forward to his book.

This was such a thrilling and entertaining story. And I was so curious to read this collab, I’ve loved everything I’ve read by both these authors and this collab is freaking amazing!
The plot and the pacing is perfect, and I just loved the characters 💛 Shiloh the broken boy definitely needed Donovan in his life. He loves him perfectly!
The mix of hockey, romance, background story and spice was great! If you’re gonna pick up this book, and you’re familiar with the authors, you won’t be disappointed

Ok, wow. I absolutely loved both Shiloh, my broken baby, and Donovan, my walking green flag. Chapters 29, 30 and 31 broke me but in a good way I guess haha? I do love a bit of angst even if it hurts. I don't usually like separations but it made sense here when Donovan found out about Shiloh's ummm extracurricular activities. I have to say though I didn't like Oakley - even if he saw the darkness in Shiloh, he was really rude to his best friend's boyfriend. Plus he also slept with his best friend's ex crush which isn't cool lol even if Donovan didn't like him anymore. I will still read Oakley and Jude's book because I'm a big fan of stepbrothers (who isn't). The whole plot with Sidney was predictable but overall added to the story. And while I understand why Kyle was introduced - so Donovan didn't question the messages too much - I feel like he could have played well in the next book, but obviously with his death that's not really possible. But yeah really recommend this book!

I knew when I saw these two were doing a collaboration that I just had to read it and I’m so glad I did because ohmygod… they had my heart the whole freaking time.
Shiloh and Donovan were such a good time from the moment that Shiloh meets him. Shiloh usually keeps to himself so when he meets Donovan, he’s so confused with his feelings. I freaking love him so much. I just love how he’s so confused.
And Donovan. He’s all sunshine. A hockey player and just wants to help. I just love how when Shiloh even gets in his place and steals his clothes, he doesn’t even bat an eye.
And when Donovan finds out what Shiloh does, oh man, what a whirlwind. But what I really love is how Shiloh would do anything to protect him.
The end of chapter thirty-one - oh, my heart. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is. Also, I loved seeing Shiloh with kids. Iggy. If you know you know. At that moment, that’s when I knew that Shiloh would protect anyone that meant anything to him.

This was so good. I loved everything about it from the level of crazy shown by Shiloh, to the level of acceptance from Donovan. Also little twist got me and I was pleasantly surprised. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.

Shiloh wanted to hurt him in an alley and use his sharp knife. Use his blood for the perfect painting. Instead, the guy asked if everything was alright, Shiloh was stunned.
Shiloh is a closed book, Donovan wants to know him, but Shiloh doesn’t let him.
He’s looking for the right moment to end him, but can’t seem to find it. Donovan is way too nice to him.

His interest becomes his obsession in Donovan, an innocent he should get rid of but can't. Instead Shiloh makes Donovan fall in love with a man he doesn't know. It's dark, haunting, steamy and bloody. It's a broken child, now a broken man and it's tears and tragedy and, despite it all, love and a fierce defense. You can't put it down.

i’m gonna need whatshisname to get his shit together for book two and earn jude’s love because i’m already obsessed with jude and won’t accept less than he deserves.

This was such a phenomenal and emotional story. I have been patiently waiting for this to release and this story is now a top read for 2026! These authors blended their styles seamlessly. They did a flawless job dealing with the sensitive topics, mixing in kinky and intimate spice, and delivering an amazing storyline that kept you on the edge of your seat. I got a bit of anxiety toward the end, but it ended in a satisfying HEA 🩸☠️🥹. This story had some great troupes like: Golden Retriever/Black Cat, Hockey Goalie/Killer Artist, Hurt/Comfort, Size Difference, Opposites Attract, and Stalking As A Love Language. My heart broke for Shiloh and I really felt his pain 😭. Both of these men have traumatic issues they've dealt with and together, they're stronger and able to heal.
This story follows Shiloh and Donovan. Shiloh is a killer artist who fled CA leaving bodies behind. He loves to use blood as one of his mediums. He runs into Donovan, a hockey goalie, and decides he wants to kill him. He realizes how beautiful he is and gets distracted. This leads him to stalking and breaking into Donovan's apartment many times. Donovan is intrigued by the quirky Shiloh even tho he knows he should run. We see these two build a relationship, get intimate, and slowly see Shiloh's walls drop. Someone starts to harass Donovan. Shiloh keeps his killer secrets on lockdown. What will happen when Shiloh's secrets start to bleed out? Will Donovan stay? Will the monster come out when Donovan is threatened? Can this monster hold onto his inner peace?
These men where everything and more. They both had broken moments and trauma that suffocated them. Donovan has dealt with his grief and is in a lighter place but still not happy. Shiloh's demons continue to haunt him and leave a trail of bodies. I loved how Donovan saw the good in Shiloh. He made Shi see that he was worth everything and that he mattered. The connection and chemistry between these two were soul shattering. The spice and kinks were darkly delicious and erotically intimate 🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥🩸. The blood/knife kink and paintings 🥵😏. There were so many swoony and adorable moments like: the sketches he kept and put on the fridge, the helmet he painted him, warming Shiloh's hands, going to his games, Shiloh with the kids, stealing his clothes, burying bodies together ☠️🤣 and all the Godzilla and Mothra references/meanings. I loved how feral and obsessed they both were for each other. The bond between these two were everything. Seeing Shiloh in a healthier place made my heart so happy. I also loved Oakley and Jude. 🖤 I went into this book not knowing exactly what to expect, but Shiloh and Donovan completely pulled me in. Their dynamic is such a wild combination of darkness and sweetness, and somehow it works perfectly. From their very first meeting, I was fascinated by how different they were and how naturally they started fitting into each other's lives.
🎨 Shiloh is probably one of the most complicated characters I've read in a while. He's an art therapy student, a talented painter, and someone carrying a lot of darkness inside him. He keeps people at a distance, so watching him become completely confused by his feelings for Donovan was honestly one of my favorite parts. He has no idea what to do with someone so kind and accepting, and seeing him struggle between what he's used to and what he actually wants made him such an interesting character.
🏒 Then there's Donovan, who is basically pure sunshine. He's a hockey player, warm-hearted, patient, and the kind of person who wants to help everyone around him. I loved how easily he accepted Shiloh's strange behavior without judging him. Even when Shiloh crosses boundaries in the most ridiculous ways, Donovan's reaction is basically just pure Donovan. 😂 His kindness and openness create such a great contrast against Shiloh's darker personality.
🩸 The biggest surprise was how invested I became in Shiloh's journey. The premise is definitely dark, and there are moments where you have to question everything, but the story does a great job showing the layers beneath his actions. Watching him slowly let Donovan in and realizing that he would do anything to protect the people he cares about was incredibly emotional.

The way I sped read through my ARCs so I could get to this book is embarrassing 😆 I managed to catch up just in time to start this book and even though I barely slept, I’m still not sorry.
There’s so much I want to say about this book, starting with my precious Shiloh. He should have been protected at all costs. He shouldn’t have had to lived through what he did. I can’t blame him for becoming the person he became because he was basically forced into it.
One of the people that should have loved and protected him, scarred him for life in more ways than one. Shiloh had to deal with his trauma in the best way he possible could. That unaliving people was his coping mechanism? Well, we play with the cards we’re dealt with and that was his hand.
Donovan was supposed to be his next victim. Instead, he became Shiloh’s salvation. Donovan managed to bring out feelings in him he never knew he had. Shiloh never felt anything remotely romantic about anyone, yet Donovan somehow short circuited his heart and soul and all Shiloh wanted was him.
When Donavan first met Shiloh, he thought Shiloh was in danger. His immediate reaction was to protect him from the “bad” guy who wanted to hurt him. If Donovan had known how close to dying he was, he would have run as far as he could.
Instead, he wanted to get closer to Shiloh. He wanted to keep him safe and cherish him as much as possible. Somehow he knew Shiloh needed to be loved and treated with kindness.
Shiloh didn’t know what love was until he met Donovan. Being around him made him want to do and be better, but when someone he cares deeply about gets hurt, Shiloh lets the monster out once again.
He couldn’t just stand by and let an innocent get hurt. So he did what he did best, but things don’t go according to plan and he’s forced to ask Donovan for help. He knows this will change everything between them but it’s also the only way Donovan can truly know who he is.
Donovan can’t help but be hurt and shocked about Shiloh’s revelation. He knows that if the truth comes out, he could lose everything he’s worked so hard for. But letting Shiloh get caught is out of the question. He still helps Shiloh but he knows that after this, what they had is over.
I was a mess reading how desperately Shiloh wanted to get Donovan back😭 He really wanted to be good for Donovan. My poor baby thought he wasn’t good enough to stay by Donovan’s side and that broke me 😭
My poor Shiloh couldn’t believe that after everything he had done, Donovan would still want him. He was ready to die if he had to live without Donovan’s love.

There’s so much I want to say about this book, starting with my precious Shiloh. He should have been protected at all costs. He shouldn’t have had to lived through what he did. I can’t blame him for becoming the person he became because he was basically forced into it.
One of the people that should have loved and protected him, scarred him for life in more ways than one. Shiloh had to deal with his trauma in the best way he possible could. That unaliving people was his coping mechanism? Well, we play with the cards we’re dealt with and that was his hand.
Donovan was supposed to be his next victim. Instead, he became Shiloh’s salvation. Donovan managed to bring out feelings in him he never knew he had. Shiloh never felt anything remotely romantic about anyone, yet Donovan somehow short circuited his heart and soul and all Shiloh wanted was him.
When Donavan first met Shiloh, he thought Shiloh was in danger. His immediate reaction was to protect him from the “bad” guy who wanted to hurt him. If Donovan had known how close to dying he was, he would have run as far as he could.
Instead, he wanted to get closer to Shiloh. He wanted to keep him safe and cherish him as much as possible. Somehow he knew Shiloh needed to be loved and treated with kindness.
Shiloh didn’t know what love was until he met Donovan. Being around him made him want to do and be better, but when someone he cares deeply about gets hurt, Shiloh lets the monster out once again.
He couldn’t just stand by and let an innocent get hurt. So he did what he did best, but things don’t go according to plan and he’s forced to ask Donovan for help. He knows this will change everything between them but it’s also the only way Donovan can truly know who he is.
Donovan can’t help but be hurt and shocked about Shiloh’s revelation. He knows that if the truth comes out, he could lose everything he’s worked so hard for. But letting Shiloh get caught is out of the question. He still helps Shiloh but he knows that after this, what they had is over.
I was a mess reading how desperately Shiloh wanted to get Donovan back😭 He really wanted to be good for Donovan. My poor baby thought he wasn’t good enough to stay by Donovan’s side and that broke me 😭
My poor Shiloh couldn’t believe that after everything he had done, Donovan would still want him. He was ready to die if he had to live without Donovan’s love.

Thankfully, Donovan did see how amazing Shiloh was. He saw the goodness of his heart and even though he doesn’t agree with what he’s done, he’s not letting him go. He wants to keep him and show him how special he is.

Blood-painting serial killer artist and golden retriever hockey goalie? Of course I was sat! Butterfly is a wild and beautiful rollercoaster of a dark romance that had me kicking my feet and my eyes tearing up! If you live for the ultimate black cat x golden retriever energy and a love story that walks the finest line between darkness and sweet, tender healing, read this right now!
The story follows Shiloh, a wonderfully chaotic, broken murderer and art therapy student who uses blood as one of his mediums and leaves a trail of bodies behind him. When he stumbles upon Donovan, a sweet, detached, sunshine hockey goalie, in an alley, Shiloh literally intends to make him his next victim. But the moment he looks at him, a switch flips. Entranced by Donovan's beauty, Shiloh gets completely distracted, pivoting straight into breaking into his apartment, stealing his hoodies, and full-blown stalking him as a love language! Donovan, who has the survival instincts of a paper bag, looks at every single waving red flag and basically decides, "Yeah... I'm keeping him." Watching these two completely opposites fall into each other’s arms while Shiloh’s dark past catches up to them was pure, unadulterated perfection! Shiloh stole my whole heart! He is the perfect blend of dark, needy, possessive, and deeply insecure. Watching this chaotic little menace try to navigate normal human feelings, get utterly confused by Donovan’s kindness, and put his blood-stained sketches on the fridge was equal parts hilarious, sweet, and heartbreaking. Donovan is the absolute greenest flag in existence! He never infantilizes Shiloh or forces him into a neat little box; he loves him for exactly who he is, even before he finds out about his "extracurricular activities." The sheer angst during their temporary separation when the truth bleeds out hit like a physical punch. I also felt a little protective of Shiloh when it came to Oakley; while I understand Oakley was just looking out for his best friend, his coldness and rudeness toward Shiloh hurt my heart a bit, especially considering how fragile and broken Shiloh already was.
The storyline was definitely more character-focused than plot-heavy, keeping the outside conflict fairly light and straightforward. Ultimately, if you are looking for a dark romance that balances chaotic, blood-stained thrills with the sweetest, most soul-healing love story, Butterfly is an absolute must-read! Lee McCormick and B. Ripley created a beautifully unique story with Shiloh and Donovan!

i'm a little bummed that this ended up being only a 3.5 stars because it was one of my most anticipated M/M releases of the summer. but the more i think about it, the more i realise this is almost entirely a *me* problem rather than a book problem.
there's genuinely nothing wrong with this book. the writing is beautiful, i really connected with it, and i thought the story was told in such a thoughtful, emotional way. it just wasn't the story i personally expected. i'm not the target audience. i went into it thinking i was getting something much darker, and instead i got a romance that was surprisingly sweet, soft, and domestic. there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! in fact, i think it does exactly what it sets out to do, but it's just not the type of romance i naturally gravitate towards. i like my books to emotionally destroy me a little more.
i also wasn't completely sold on the dynamic between the main characters. they were both lovely, and their relationship was genuinely wholesome, but again, i tend to prefer messier, more emotionally complicated characters and relationships. that's entirely down to personal taste rather than any fault of the book itself.
if anything, this reminded me a little of Heartstopper. not the plot! (obviously), but just in terms of one of the main characters giving me serious Nick Nelson vibes. and just like with Heartstopper, i can absolutely appreciate why so many people adore it. it's incredibly well done. it's just a little too gentle for me. not lighter in terms of the themes it explores, but definitely tamer than what i usually enjoy, and because of that i never felt quite as emotionally invested as i'd hoped.
all that said, i still think this is a really good book. if you're looking for a heartfelt, beautifully written romance with some darker elements rather than full-on dark romance, i think this will absolutely work for you. and despite this one not being a perfect fit for my tastes, i'm still really excited for the next book because the setup for it definitely caught my attention. fingers crossed the next one ends up being a little more up my alley.

Lee Mccormick and B. Ripley weave a wonderfully dark story that sucks the reader in from page one and doesn't let go until the last page turned. Allowing the reader to fall as hopelessly in love with the MMC's, as they do with each other. Actively, cheering for and sympathizing with the murderous character is no easy feat, and this two do it with ease and finesse.
If you like your love stories dark and bloody, you'll enjoy this, just check your triggers first.
