Fable came to Thornbroom Hollow for a fresh start… She found a magical bookshop, a town full of secrets, and a police chief who knows more than he’s saying. Fable Pierce thought starting over in her forties would mean quiet mornings, a steady job, and maybe a little peace. Instead, she inherited a magical bookstore with opinions of its own, a role she never asked for, and a book that chose her before she understood what that meant. Now the magic is growing stronger. The rules are getting stranger. And the darkness beneath Thornbroom Hollow is beginning to stir. When unsettling whispers start circling the town and the ever-watchful police chief keeps showing up at exactly the wrong moments, Fable realizes something isn’t right. Because in a town built on magic… nothing is ever just coincidence. And the deeper she digs into the bookstore’s secrets, the more it feels like she’s been pulled into a story that was written long before she arrived. One that might not let her leave.
This book got weird from the first few pages. I couldn't understand the major change since the prior book. I wasn't interested enough to try to puzzle things out.
Amazon synopsis: Fable Pierce thought starting over in her forties would mean quiet mornings, a steady job, and maybe a little peace.
Fable is taking care of her bookshop, Bookmarks and Broomsticks, and prepping to become the official magical Keeper. She is also involved with the local no magical sheriff, Elliott, so keeping the two worlds separate is challenging.
When Fable is in the midst of the Keeper induction ceremony, worlds collide and become quite dangerous. The Murks, a darker group living in town, callously interrupts the ceremony and attempt to extract promises and try to bind Fable into promises.
She manages to remain neutral and complete the ceremony. Elliott’s sister Mina is a piece of the worlds colliding, and Fable talks to her, finds out what is happening, and moves her to safety, but in the overwhelming excitement, she realizes that someone is tsken during the Murk melee and she must find them.
This is a fabulous, fun series, intriguing and vastly entertaining and I find myself enthralled with Fable and her community. Her friendship with Scarla, her love for the bookshop friends and friends of her aunt, are gentle and compassionate, and Fables willingness to embrace a new life, love, relationships that she turned aside before, is encouragement in the small community and indicate she will stay and meet the tasks as Keeper.
Can’t wait for the next novel in the series, an absolutely worthwhile read
This book was almost constantly frustrating to me. I don't like all of the half answers or last minute "by the way" issues. Sentences like "She looked older but not" are pretty consistent for explanations. Plenty of unknowns and questions about Aunt Twila continue as in previous books. Back and forth discussions around Elliot (Chief Pike) - the protentional love interest seemed forced. It seems like almost everyone knows something but no one is willing to share with Fable (FMC). Multiple issues of hurry up or time constraints followed by dawdling and interruptions that made no sense. Bare explanations were sort of presented about 80% but didn't last long. This really could be quite a good series but the repetitive sections, lack of explanations, and low level tension just don't bring it up to speed. I'm not certain if I'll continue with the series or not.
Charmed Between the Chapters is the third book in Bookmarks and Broomsticks: A Magical Midlife Witch Series. Fable is acknowledged as the Tome Keeper. She stands to be seen and accepts the responsibility. However, the ceremony is interrupted by the murks. Police Chief Elliot Pike is interested in Fable and she in him. The question she faces is “does he know anything about magic?”. He asks her about his sister who he has concerns. Lou Lou the cat, as will as her familiar, disappears.
These are great. There’s enough character development and plot movement without the filler. At this point in reading this type of series, I am a bit weary of “familiars” being any and every species and familiars who are not very helpful to their witch.. That being said, I am having a good time reading these books.
Another awesome book in this series! It’s whimsical, fun, cozy, and magical. It gives Harry Potter vibes. Loved it and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book!
