After a surly and joyless Civil War soldier discovers real love
with a powerful, beautiful ex-slave, he thinks his life has finally taken a
turn for the best and shaking a fist at naysayers and bigots, sets on
marrying the young woman. But when his new bride is shot down the day of
their wedding, he is catapulted into a bone chilling nihilism that calcifies
into steely self-interest over the decades that follow. However, years
later he is unwittingly pulled into a high stakes conflict while down in
Brazil and now the man is forced by fate to either self evaluate and change
or very possibly die due to the hard and cold person he has become.

A very dramatic, fresh, piece that beautifully integrate s
history, fantasy and universal, timeless themes to take the reader down a
compelling, unbeaten path. Complex characters and an unconventional
plotline, as well as the uncommon subject matter and use of ghosts within
the realism, distinguish this script from other, more standard "period"
screenplays.

"Cafe" is a provocative, intriguing, very original screenplay with deep themes, interesting characters and a complex plotline that reflects the intricacies of one man's life within the framework of a larger, often convoluted and complicated socio-political landscape. Without preaching, becoming sentimental or overly romantic, Davidsohn has managed to address the questions of the individual's imperative vis a vie others. He's explored how one person grapples with the disillusionments of humanity, of life, of society and war; he's dramatized how loss, grief and tragedy shape one person's reality; he's reminded the reader that personal change is an ever lingering option no matter where one is in the journey of existence. These themes and more are beautifully addressed while one is same time, utterly entertained. The combination of realism with shades of voodoo, superstition, fantasy and hauntings makes the film all the more compelling and engaging to experience while same time heightening the cinematic effects. Overall this is a feeling-full, inspired, very unique labor of love.
