While I was waiting for my next book to arrive I decided to read a few pages of The Resonant by Samuel S Barton. It was far from at the top of my TBR pile of potential and is a recent purchase as it came out a few months ago and was therefore easy to grab at the time. A few pages in and I was Hooked… for a book that is an Authors first offering it’s exceptional, fast paced & concise writing that while seemingly short on detail, is far from it! The book is full of environment & world building intent from the outset.
The main character Captain Kate Monroe has been assigned a new command. Placed in charge of the Resonant, an experimental design for a new breed of fleet ships. What follows is a chase across known space to discover the source or origin of a mysterious signal wherein time is rapidly running out. Presumed a greater threat to the fleet than the Aliens humanity is currently at war with & pursued by the Anson (tasked with bringing the Resonant the heal) Monroe must make a choice that could affect everything they have fought to discover along the way.
There are points in this book the reminded me of some of the classic WWII movies like ‘Das Boot’ & the more recent ‘Greyhound’. A complex & tensely tactical battle is one of the more pivotal moments in the book that is filled with non-stop action & intrigue.
The book does what all good books should, filling the reader with enough interest & questions to drive them deeper into the narrative. the universe feels lived in but also strangely virgin to Human eyes & the potential scope of where this could go in the next book is vast! & I can’t wait to read it. A solid 5 star entry totally worthy of the time spent amongst its pages.
