The best music promo book by far, in fact it’s more than that. Tried so many different music promo books and content and this is by far the most comprehensive. The bible of for any self releasing or signed artist. So much value crammed into every page.

The Artist’s Ultimate Playbook!!! 🙌

Can't believe I get to be the first person across the pond to review this unbelievable wealth of knowledge coming from an Aussie legend!!!
I've read his first book "The 4D songwriter" from 7 years ago and I still keep finding things I missed on my first, second or 11th read-through! That's how deep this guy goes down the research rabbit holes. Now let me tell you, "More than a music artist" will most likely be a book they'll teach out of at Berkeley, MI and other music universities. That's how thoroughly this man has described how the music industry has changed and evolved and if you don't follow along, guess what, you WILL be left behind wondering "why haven't I made it yet"?
A fair warning to any reader: this is not passive reading. This book demands something of you. If you’re not prepared to shed excuses, embrace accountability, and take decisive action, you may find it confronting. But for those willing to rise to the occasion, the reward is transformational.
Jayson has delivered a monumental body of work—so rich in insight and so forward-thinking, it almost feels like privileged knowledge. More importantly, it has reignited a genuine excitement in me for music, creativity, and what’s possible moving forward.
My deepest thanks for this remarkable contribution—you’ve truly inspired me all over again. 🙏

Jayson: To say I'm loving your book is an understatement.
I'm experiencing it as a profoundly transformative work of genius. And I don't say that lightly.
The depth, precision, rigor, and thoughtfulness with which you've constructed this work is extremely rare to find, especially in this day and age of excessive, superficial, and extractive information.
The Black River metaphor is immediately potent and memorable. The marketing framework you've laid out gives language to how I've intuited my own artistic mission beyond the music, but lacked the support and understanding to implement consistently.
You've brilliantly managed to model your framework in the book itself — it has held my attention and invoked my curiosity in a way that very little else does these days. I'm only halfway through listening to the audiobook and this has been my experience so far.
I did the exercise of flattening my song lyrics to extract the primary themes and audience motivations, and it's already proved so useful, even if just to me at the moment.
I have so many questions about how you came to write this book — technical ones about the process, and also philosophical ones about how you arrived at the thesis.
I had all but lost hope that my creative vision would ever make it out into the world. Your book has restored my hope, and pulled me out of my own Black River.
Can't thank you enough.

This book landed at a time when I was re-evaluating my relationship with music, creativity, and what it really means to connect with people through art.
What I appreciated most about More Than a Music Artist is that it moves beyond surface-level strategies and brings the focus back to something much deeper — human behaviour, emotional connection, and the psychology behind why people truly stay engaged.
As someone who has navigated both the creative and personal sides of being an artist, this perspective felt grounding. It gently challenges the idea that success is about constantly chasing visibility, and instead reframes it as building something meaningful and sustainable through genuine connection.
It also gave language to things I had felt but couldn’t fully articulate — particularly around audience relationships, intention, and the importance of creating from a place of alignment rather than pressure.
Whether you’re just starting out or reassessing your path, this book offers a thoughtful and refreshing approach to building an audience in a way that actually feels good to be part of.
Highly recommend for any artist wanting to create with more clarity, intention, and depth.

I saw someone say this was dense. But I really liked how exhaustive and in-depth everything was. Some of this I am vaguely aware of, but not in a really cohesive way and I think that is because what I do already know, I have learned from YouTube and "gurus" and I'm wondering now if they really actually know why they say what they say. Maybe they do on some level, but they never really go very deep or slow down enough where you can really get it. Or they don't really get it on a deep level, but know some things are things they are supposed to say and cover because it's on the list of things you're supposed to do. It just really feels like a lot of things are clicking for me and I'm seeing some things I have done and been advised to do that didn't really work FOR ME, because I either didn't really grasp the concept, or they were not true to my real "brand" under the surface and I was just going through someone's motions. Without me really knowing it. I feel a little ripped off by a couple of people that I've invested a lot of time and effort into their methods and I was really just served the basic "outline" without a lot of instruction on how to make it really work.

This book and Jayson's work is revolutionary in its marketing approach, and if you dare to read it, it will change the way you think about marketing. The underlying premise describes genuine human connection as a primary goal of an artist, as opposed to numbers of fans or followers. In the book, Jayson describes in excellent detail where true motivation lies for anyone trying to reach others. Oddly enough, this understanding is not limited to music artists - it can apply to authors, teachers, and business leaders as well.
(From the book: "When we direct the promotion of our music toward those who are psychologically aligned, effort decreases and retention increases. Promoting Music in such a way does not attract passive listeners but those most psychologically compatible.") It is a longer term strategy.
- highly recommended!

I listened to the audio book. It really found me at the right time, and I’m having to admit to myself that while I’ve spent a lifetime crafting my ability to play and deliver a killer live show… doing anything in regards to internet marketing recorded music and having an online presence is a category I remain a complete beginner at.
It was humbling to say the least.
But the perspectives on what music is really about and how to center that really helped me feel more optimistic about finishing this record I’m working on and thinking ahead a bit to setup the different sort of “chambers” of resonance to invite people in via the internet.

ok so I picked this up after seeing a facebook ad and was kind of a sceptic because I've bought so many music marketing things that promised a lot and delivered basically nothing. this was really different. it took me a while to get through because I kept having these moments where I would put it down and just sit with what I just read because I felt like things finally made sense. and because there was a lot of science lol. but it felt like someone finally gets what i'm actually trying to do with my music. make something that matters to people.

Really enjoying this audiobook so far. As an independent artist getting ready to release my own music, I’ve found a lot of Jason’s perspective genuinely useful and reassuring. I especially appreciate the focus on authenticity and creating a connection with people rather than feeling like you have to manufacture an image to succeed. It’s also challenged me to think differently about some of my own experiences within the music industry and has already prompted questions I hadn’t considered before. There’s a lot here that I think other independent artists will find valuable too.

I think this is a great book because it’s very detailed and covers what artists really need to build a successful career as an artist. I also appreciate that the writer is very kind and takes the time to update us through email. They even reach out to ask if we have any questions about the book, which is definitely a positive thing for me.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is an artist—whether you’re a musician or any other type of artist. I feel like the lessons can really apply to different kinds of artists; you just have to put them into practice.

After reading Jaysons first book The 4D songwriter, I’ve been a huge fan of his methodology. More Than A Music Artist takes those ideas to another level. It is comprehensive, well researched and a completely new approach to music marketing that the industry desperately needs. If you’re sick of being a slave to vanity metrics and actually want to make a difference in people’s lives with your music, this is the book that will help you do it.

This book completely changed the way I think about music marketing. It doesn’t focus on chasing algorithms or empty metrics, but instead emphasizes building a genuine and lasting connection with the people who listen to your music. I especially appreciated that everything is backed by scientific research, yet explained in a clear and practical way.
It’s a highly recommended read for any artist who wants to build a meaningful career and stop relying on fleeting trends.

I bought this book two months ago, and am about hallway through so far. It’s such a wealth of knowledge, perspective and information that it’s taken me this long to slowly absorb and apply all its teachings. To any artist looking to dive deeper into their story, songwriting, and the interpersonal meaning within it all (and how it can make a positive impact on the world) this book is for you! Highly recommend.

You can read this book simply to get better at music marketing. If you do so, fine! However, you would not grasp the basic idea. This was my first notion to, but while reading it I realized: When I am writing my own songs, I am not only a musician but I am an artist. And even more, I could be the leader of a movement and the builder of a community. With this mindset, ideas for music marketing are a side product. The big thing however is the sense of mission, J.J. Evans placed in my heart. I do not longer see myself as a creator for the sake of creation, but for the sake of my audience and this boosts my motivation to new heights!
The book sets the theoretical foundation of this new appoach. I am looking forward to going through the accompanying workbook and applying this to my specific career path.

I feel like this has completely changed what I expect from music marketing advice now. Never really seen it broken down with so much science like this before, and yeah… kind of hard to take anything else seriously now haha

Tbh haven't read this one yet but I DID read his first book and studied his podcasts a lot and it helped a ton in finding direction for my music project.

Jayson is a true music marketing genius — operating on a completely different level to most in the space. After reading his first book "The 4D Songwriter", it’s clear that "More Than a Music Artist" pushes those ideas even further. So glad I came across his work.
