What The Lightning Sees by Louise Bay is the first installment to a three part novella series. This was my first book that I have read from this author and I must say that she has me intrigued in how she will play out the sexual tension and relationship between Jake Harrison and Haven Daniels. We all know the saying that opposites attract...well for in this case, Jake and Haven are the complete opposite of each other. On the other end of the spectrum, Jake is a rich, successful entrepreneur whereas Haven has to work really hard just to get noticed by her boss. Jake is everything that Haven despises... he's confident, smart, rich and has everything handed to him on a silver platter. Well for Haven, maybe she prejudged Jake in categorizing and labeling him. Or did she? How will Haven react when she learns of the truth of why she was assigned to work alongside with Jake?

#1body3

This was a quick read that has sexual tension written all over this installment. As much as I enjoyed the sexual tension, I hope in the next installment the author will lay the groundwork and show more of a deeper connection with Jake and Haven. I would love to know more of Jake and Haven's past. Overall, this book was a good start to this novella series. I look forward to the next installment and how will Haven react when she learns of the truth on why she was chosen to work on this project.

Genre: serial CR
Sensuality: R

Magazine editor meets gorgeous millionaire on temporary assignment.

Before this, I have read all of Bay's previous works. She may not be the greatest writer but two things stand out: most of her heroines are unlikable and she writes good sex scenes. In that regard, this is typical of her style.

This novella is maybe a 100 pages and I almost couldn't finish the first 40%. The h was an editor at a fashion magazine and I cannot believe that she was any good at her job. She was so uptight and insecure and downright unprofessional. Bitchy at the drop of a hat. When she kept on rolling her eyes non-stop while on assignment, I wondered at her age. Who over the age of 16 does that? (We later learn that she is suppose to be 27.)

Then the h lets down her hair (literally and figuratively) and does a Jeckyll And Hyde and I got whiplash.

Um, good sex scenes tho.

POV: alternating 1st person of H/h

*mumbles / screams unintelligibly* THAT ENDING. gahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

In case you haven’t gathered, there’s a cliffhanger. I clearly fell off it. I loved Louise Bay’s other books (check out my review for those here) so I’m not surprised I loved this one as well. Haven has a quick mouth that gets her into trouble and Jake/Harry (what do I call him?!?!) has a wide smile that could drop your panties in and flash. what’s not to love?!

Haven’s a little bit of a bitch, but she’s not entirely doing it on purpose. She’s incredibly focused on her job and really wants to succeed there. She knows that she’s not part of the “popular” crowd at the office and so she falls onto her defense position: be a bitch, get shit done. Really, it’s just a cover for her deep-seated insecurities. When she gets the job to interview an music star turned actress, she nearly screams out of her skin. She’s determined to make this perfect.

But then she’s paired with Jake Harrison (thus, Harry), a photographer, who has been assigned to document the interview. Haven thinks he’s a spoiled rich boy, living off daddy’s trust fund who only got this job because he’s friends with her company’s owner. She also sort of tells him that. Oops. What she doesn’t know is that she actually only got the job because her boss thinks she’s not that pretty and he needed someone who wouldn’t outshine the actress. Shit.

I grew to love Haven and Jake. Jake is sincere, sweet & dominant in all the right ways. When Haven lets her hair down (both literally and figuratively) her mask slips away and she turns into a fun and bubbly person. Jake is determined to tear that mask to pieces because as soon as he saw a glimpse behind it, he was falling for her. He doesn’t even know why, and yet he doesn’t want to stop. These two emit so much tension – it was practically buzzing between there. Don’t worry, there are plenty of delicious scenes to satisfy your smut cravings – and I was begging for Haven to LIVE A LITTLE so I could get even more. So damn hot.

What the Lightning Sees is full of undeniable chemistry and intriguing characters mixed with a compelling story. I wanted to move to London immediately and I didn’t want to stop reading – ESPECIALLY when I hit that cliffhanger! gahhhh! I loved this!! book two. I need book two!

Jake Harrison is doing his friend a favor by agreeing to do the photography for an important piece for his magazine. When he is set to work with Haven Daniels, he can't believe the prim and bitchy woman. She makes assumptions and manages to offend him every time they meet. When the tables are turned and Jake calls her out, he finds he actually likes the prickly Haven and can't wait for more time together. Haven though doesn't react like any woman he has ever known and Jake has to find a way to get close.

Entertaining read. Haven was awkwardly bitchy, I don't think she realized how she comes off, but once Jake understands her it is pure entertainment. I cant wait for the next book.

Please note: we had two reviewers read this book, and their opinions differed. Our star rating is an approximation based on this. That's books, right?

I have to say that I loved Louise’s Empire State series, but I think that she outdid herself with What the Lighting Sees. Ms. Bay seems to get better with each book she writes! This book was steamy, funny, and heartfelt!

We meet Haven, a hard worker who is often seen as uptight by her co-workers. We only see the true Haven when she is with her brother, Luke, or best friend, Ash. She gets the opportunity of a lifetime when given a celebrity story for the magazine she works for. The only issue? She has to work with Harry, the boss’ friend, who is just filling in as photographer.
Haven makes a lot of assumptions, which lead to her and Harry making a deal; she must answer all his questions honestly and he would help her with Sandy since he knows her. As the two get to know one another, the attraction grows.

“Even through our coats, his hard-on pressed against me. Instinctively, I twisted my body under him. ‘Fuck,’ he whispered into my mouth as he pushed his hips against me. I wanted him. I really wanted him.”

But it takes a lot for Haven to give herself to anyone.

“I think she’s holding herself back, stopping herself. I need to find out why. You people with the vaginas are so complicated.”

And that ending! Why?!? Ms. Bay, you better not make me wait too long for part two! ~ Tiffany, 4.5 stars

~~~
Jake Harrison, rich man, pretty boy, living off Daddy’s money—at least in Haven Daniels’ eyes. Jake appears to be the epitome of everything Haven hates about men and she’s sure to share her feelings with Jake over and over again.
Haven is an uptight bitch who hides her beauty behind severe clothes and an even more severe hairstyle.
Jake and Haven are forced to work together on an important assignment. Will Jake break down Haven’s walls so they’re low enough for Haven to realize the man Jake truly is or will her insecurities be too much?
Unfortunately, I didn’t connect at all with Haven or Jake. Neither one rang true to me by their actions and reactions to the plot line. I found myself not really caring that Haven was a total bitch to Jake and that Jake didn’t have the wherewithal to force Haven to see past her wrong perception of him.
I love Louise Bay’s writing. Her Empire State series had me hooked from the beginning and made her an auto-buy author for me. Louise’s ability to take the reader along for the ride with her characters is usually amazing, but I found myself wanting to get off What the Lightning Sees ride. I just didn’t like where it was taking me. ~ Missy, 3 stars
"There’s nothing worse than the non-apology apology. Either apologise and mean it, or don’t bother."
Haven Daniels berkerja sebagai feature editor di majalah mingguan wanita, Rallegra. Untuk mendapat promosi, dia harus menghasilkan artikel yang menarik. Kesempatan emas datang saat bosnya, Robert, memilihnya untuk menulis karir Sandy Fox. Penyanyi yang sedang menapaki dunia akting itu terkenal sulit. Tapi tantangan terbesar yang Haven hadapi adalah Jake ‘Harry’ Harrison, seorang fotografer yang merupakan teman Robert. Dia tidak menyukai bahwa laki-laki itu begitu mudah mendapatkan pekerjaan dari koneksi teman super kayanya. Hubungan kerja pun tidak berjalan baik karena Haven tidak bisa menahan diri untuk tidak mempertanyakan kemampuan rekannya. Jake sendiri tidak segan untuk membalas ucapan Haven. Pandangan Jake terhadap sikap Haven yang kaku berubah saat menemukan wanita itu dalam penampilan yang sangat berbeda dan mabuk berat.
--
What the Lightning Sees: Part One was super sexy and hot! Interaksi anjing dan kucing di antara Haven dan Jake/Harry ini seru banget. Tapi seperti yang kita tahu dan sudah sering kejadian, hubungan mereka malah jadi super dekat dan ‘dekat’. Aku suka banget dengan permainan saling melemparkan pertanyaan dan that kissing joke, hahaha. Masing-masing tokoh juga punya latar belakang yang menarik. Sikap bitchy Haven punya alasan yang kuat, sedangkan kehidupan Jake/Harry ternyata sangat jauh dari anggapan umum. Penjelasan itu membuat tokohnya lebih hidup dan menarik. Orang-orang terdekat mereka, seperti teman baik dan saudara, membuat cerita jadi luas dan memunculkan konflik yang potensial.
Jake “Harry” Harrison is everything that Haven Daniels loathes, he has money, confidence and good looks. She assumes he comes from a good background with a trust fund which is the opposite of her life and as such she hates that he seems to have it all.
I love Louise Bay’s writing style and her Empire State Series is one of my go to books to re-read when I need a pick me up. I was seriously worried that she wouldn’t be able to top the wonderful Ethan Scott but I should have known better her writing just keeps getting better and better.
As usual her characterisation is excellent and you will find yourself cheering these two on as they struggle to find their way. Haven is feisty and calls it exactly as it is, you will find yourself laughing out loud at her treatment of Harry, she has no filter what so ever and calls a spade a spade !
Although this was a novella it was just the right size for me as I couldn’t put it down and had to finish it in one sitting even though that meant I was reading til 3am on a Saturday morning. Please bring on book two as I doubt I will get enough of Harry / Jake.
What the Lightning Sees follows Haven Daniels and Jake Harrison. From their first meeting Haven and Jake dislike each other based on what they each believe the other one is like. But when they are forced to work together they slowly start to realize that there is more to the other than they thought.
I really liked Haven; she came off to others as an uptight and bitchy, but because of that she didn’t have a lot of friends. I don’t think she really means to come off like that and because of that I felt bad for her. I felt she really did want to be liked by her co-worker, but she was just kind of the odd duck out in her office.
I first became of fan of Louise Bay when I read her Empire State trilogy and loved it, so I was excited when I received my arc for her new series What the Lightning Sees. I so wasn’t disappointed, I really enjoyed part one and can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series.
When I started reading this book, I felt like unwrapping an exotic gift. Ever since I read The Empire State's series, I was enamored with the author's writing style and her sense of sensuality. I wanted more: more passion, more romance, more couple time.
Now, a new serial is out.
Curiosity has accompanied me all throughout the reading. I kept wondering what the title refers to. I like the setting in this novel. Harry and Haven meet on the job. Haven is ambitious and wants to prove she can do a great job. Meanwhile, Harry seems to be there as a favour to her boss, not really needing to work for a living. That's a hurdle between them from the very start.
Haven is driven but doesn't manage well her emotions. That makes for very quirky and funny dialogues. On the other hand, Harry is much more than the rich boy he appears to be. I love it when a man has projects, a sense of family and is in control of himself. I think this man is going to be worth knowing.
It strikes me that Haven is an interesting choice of character. She might not be easy to like at first and she has issues with people over this, but I believe everyone deserves a chance to prove their worth. Besides, she's aware of her attitude and her imperfections turn out to be quite endearing. If Harry finds her appealing and bets on her, so if he's willing to do that, I'm all in favour to do it myself ;o)
After all, she's had it tough it life. Despite appearances, both Haven and Harry have more in common than what they think, and it was sweet to watch how they start knowing each little by little, forming a bond over small details that carry a lot of meaning. Slowly, forced to work together on a magazine article about a rising Hollywood star, their interaction opens them up to each other.
When the first passionate moment happens, it's sudden and unexpectedly hot. All I could think about was, please, continue. And they do! Although not right away. First, they develop their relationship. I believe there are many layers to both characters and just a few of them start unfolding in this episode. I really loved the sweet determination Harry/Jake shows to become closer to Haven, how he lowers her defenses. I loved how she melts under his seductive charm despite her previous experiences in life. It all felt real, palpable, true. That's why I cried a little in my heart when Haven suffers a severe emotional blow at the end.
I have so much hope for this couple. In the author's capable hands, I'm sure they'll have a rewarding, albeit hard journey towards happiness. And I'm so looking forward to travelling alongside with them :o)
If you LOVED The Empire State Series by Louise Bay, you will definitely LOVE the first book in this new three part series.
The banter between characters is hilarious. The highs, lows, swoon worthy moments. What the Lightning Sees is the -definition- of 'addictive.' The perfect start to what is sure to be an amazing series. Louise Bay knows how to write a solid book with relate-able characters, the right amount of sweet, funny, pull your hair out in frustration moments, and angst..oooooh the angst!! Oh yeah, prepare to swoon too! Let's not forget the secondary characters, she makes them feel like family and they serve an important role in the story.
But back to the funny!
"We don't know each other well enough to be joking about chlamydia"
"I think she's holding herself back, stopping herself. I need to find out why. You people with vaginas are so complicated."
"Don't blame it on the vaginas, brother, or I'm going to start to talk to you about penises, then you're going to heave and it's all going to go very badly." .. just a few that made me chuckle.
Haven- she's smart, feisty, uptight, says what shes thinking and comes off as a bitch to most - is forced to partner up & work with Jake Harrison (a.k.a Harry to his friends) a humble, confident, hard working, self made millionaire, who has a hobby as a photographer. Oh yeah, he always has a beautiful woman hanging off his arm.
Assigned to interview A-list star Sandy Fox is just what Haven needs to step her career up to the next level. Problem is that Harry is only filling in as a photographer as a favor to her boss. She's concerned there will be a lack of commitment on his end. Being the judgmental, uptight person she is, Haven comes to the conclusion that Harry is a spoiled trust fund baby, and must take every precaution to make sure this interview turns out to be the best of her journalism career to date. A drunken stroll through town is all it takes for Harry to see Haven in a new light, throwing caution to the wind with her hair down (literally, she always wears it in a tight bun at work) and as a happy , easy going person.
The interview takes them on location to Paris and by this point Harry is smitten with Haven and MUST have her. -Next week we were in Paris, and if I couldn't seduce a woman in Paris then I'd chop my dick off-
Stolen kisses, sexual tension..the angst! Will Haven let her walls down and let Harry be her Jake? More importantly, will Harry still have a dick?!?!?
And, and.. AND THAT CLIFFHANGER!! OMG! I'm left on my knees begging. Please! Louise! May I have the next installment?!
This is one of my favorite authors! Her stories are wonderful and I jumped at the chance to review her new novella trilogy, What the Lightening Sees. And, of course, she did not disappoint!!
This is the story of Harry (Jake) and Haven who are put together at work on a project. Haven lacks self-confidence, is a beautiful woman, but dresses very conservative, so she doesn't come across as beautiful. But she is a hard worker and really wants to get ahead. She also dislikes spoiled, self-confident men, she assumes Harry to be. She and Harry butt heads from the beginning....
"Why are you even working at this magazine? You clearly don't need the money. Shouldn't you be interning at an investment bank or something?"
"I know you find it difficult, but will you just try not to be bitchy for thirty minutes? If you had any sense, you would be doubly nice to me now that you know I know Sandy."
Was he saying he could make things awkward if I didn't suck up to him. "You're blackmailing me?" I asked him.
He sighed. "Jesus, you're hard work."
"I'm the one trying to keep it professional with the subject of this article," I said. It's like I pressed a button I couldn't turn off. I'd slotted into giving him grief and I couldn't row back.
"You think consistently insulting me is professional?"
Harry is used to getting what he wants and he realizes he wants Haven.
Next week we were in Paris, and if I couldn't seduce a woman in Paris then I'd chop my dick off.
The relationship progresses nicely between them as they get to know each other and I found myself laughing out loud at some of their banter.
"Wow. There are so many things wrong with that statement I don't know where to go with it. The fact that you might have imagined Millie and I discussing anal sex is just plain disturbing, and then there's you insinuating that's what I'm into. I think that constitutes a record for you in terms of how many insults you can pack into a single statement. Anyone would think you're asking to get kissed by me."
The book's chapters are told from alternating POV's which I love. There is an overheard conversation at the end of this book which leaves your heart hurting and a big cliffhanger. Thankfully, I'm moving on to book 2 ASAP!
I highly recommend this series, or anything else that Louise has written. You will not be disappointed.
Jake Harrison is hot and rich, but much more than that he’s smart as well. He doesn’t gloat about his wealth and he loves his sister and spoiled her rotten. Haven Daniels didn’t know about the smart part, what she knew is that he’s over-confident, Mr.-Trust-Fund baby and too handsome for his own good.
Haven Daniels is uptight, smart and a little bit b****y for her own good. Just like how Jake wanted her woman. She’s beautiful – but doesn’t know it, and doesn’t dress like it. Problem is, she seems not to be affected by his charm.
When they’re forced to work together, sparks flew, Jake had never enjoyed bantering as much as he did with her. Their sexual chemistry was off the chart, and I’m wondering if until when can Haven resist him?
When things were finally heating up and going somewhere, Jake did something that broke Haven’s heart. Will he be able to regain her trust again? Will Haven allow him to explain? Things to look forward to for the second book in the series.
Just like her previous series, Louise Bay had me swooning an panting for another book-boyfriend in What Lightning Sees.
What the lightening sees part one
This story starts off with Haven meeting her new Co worker and all around heart throb, Jake "harry"  Harrison.  Harry is an American who is living in London with sister as he tries to get his energy company off the ground and running.  But he is always up for helping his fellow friend as a fill in photographer at the local glam magazine company where he meets the tight hair bun wearing,  h
Haven.
When these two first meet it doesn't go over very well.  In fact it ends either both of them screaming mad and haven buying Harry an apology coffee in order to smooth things over.  However, once Harry figures out what kind of women Haven is and proceeds to call her out on her bullsh*t,  a friendship builds between the two that leads to witty banter, wicked kisses,  and scorching nights.
This is a short novella that leaves quite an impression.  The characters are lovable,  Harry/jake is so freaking sexy it's just too much at times.  Haven is very relatable and I found myself in her shoes a time a two in my life.  I highly recommended this series to anyone looking for a quick getaway.
Haven Daniels is your typical Type A Personality, the one who is always early and can often be viewed as a bit of a cow and the one who tries her hardest to be the best. She is often the type not to make herself pretty as she believes hard work all the way shall conquer. When a chance at a big interview comes along with Celebrity Sandy , Haven is overjoyed to have gotten the opportunity as this is normally Emily's department. Haven is paired on the job with Jake Harrison , a friend of the bosses who is filling in as the prior photographer Brad has quit the magazine. Haven and Jake aka Harry get off on the wrong foot as Haven is quick to judge Jake by his money and assumptions that lead her to think he is nothing but a spoiled rich trust fund baby when in fact he is anything but. As the story goes along though we see that their differences start to soften and they actually start to fall for one another, but this will be short-lived when Haven overhears her boss talking to Jake about the "REAL" reason Haven was put on this interview and it has nothing to do with skill. Can Haven forgive Jake or will her hurt and pride be too strong for Jake to break through when she overhears the conversation ?
Well this first of a 3 part novella started off very well IMO.
Haven Daniels is a starchy, stiff, jobs-worth Features Editor of Rallegra, who has her eye on the latest celebrity interview, where she feels she can really make her mark.
Jake Harrison, Harry to his friends, finds himself at the offices of UK’s premier woman’s magazine, helping out his college friend, Robert. Being a photography hobbyist, Jake has offered his services to assist an upcoming celebrity interview, and it also helps that he has the celebrity in question on speed dial.
Haven and Jake’s involuntary partnership in this project, gives immediate negative discourse between them. Haven makes extreme assumptions that she can’t button tight, and Jake reacts with heat.
I enjoyed the instant sparring between these characters. Haven and her attempts to belittle Jake, due to her twisted perception of his entitlement, and Jake with his bristled attraction towards a very unique girl.
Looking forward to the continuation, and can’t believe that once again I got dragged into a drip fed situation. It isn’t like there aren’t any other books out there!
I'm so ready for part two. This first part started off well. Haven and Harry/Jake had a rocky start. Haven thought Harry was a spoiled rich trust fund brat and Harry thought Haven was a stuck up female dog. Both of them had the wrong impression of each other. Even though they thought the worst of the other, they sparred often and their chemistry was great. In fact, I was slightly taken aback when Harry made a move and planted one (a kiss) on Haven. Up to that point, I thought they were likely to strangle one another, but I'd have lost that bet.
It really seemed like things were changing for Haven and Jake after that. They were getting to know one another, working well with each other, trying to figure out what was going on between them, when something happened that's thrown a wrench into the proceedings. The installment ended there, so I'm going to have to wait for part two to see what happens next. I was hooked to the story and couldn't believe how soon it ended. I like Haven and Jake and I hope they can work through this road block and get back on track.
Wow wow wow
Louise Bay has done it again!!!
First she gave us Anna and Ethan, now she has given us a couple to rival them!!! I was so thrilled to get my hands on Ms Bay's new novella series - I love her writing.
Haven Daniels is a woman who is both intelligent and beautiful but has no idea of just how beautiful she is. But she is about to fiNd out.
Jake Harrison, Harry to his friends, is rich, determined and always gets what he wants. He wants Haven.
From the minute the two meet, they spar with each other. The attraction is there, but will it ever be acted upon?
Can Harry break down Haven's barriers?
It is a brilliant beginning to Louise Bay's new series.
Definitely a 5***** book.
I look forward to Part 2.
Wow! What a great start to this serial series! Jake and Haven are a fantastic together. Haven may appear to be uptight, but she has a great snarky, fiery personality. Jake has definitely met his match. Haven challenges Jake in a way that most women don't. She doesn't care about his money and doesn't let him get away with anything. The chemistry between the two is off the charts. I really enjoyed the push and pull, the will they, won't they. This new serial series is off to a great start and I can't wait to read more!
NICOLE'S REVIEW
4.5 STARS
I loved this book! I like the fact that it’s 3 novellas split into three parts. I’m sitting here now pissed off at the end, not because it was a bad ending, but because it was awesome and I want more.
It starts off with Haven who is all work and no play. She goes to work with her hair pulled up in a tight bun with not a hair out of place, and clothes that went out of style in the fifties. All of her coworkers talk down to her and don’t respect her at all. The worst part of it all is she doesn’t understand why, she knows she can be a bit abrupt but thinks she still somewhat of a nice person. She does have her best friend Ash and her brother Luke who bring out a lighter side of her.
Then you have Jake aka Harry, the hot entrepreneur that has made a lot of money and lives in England. He’s worked hard for his money, but he still has a humble side of him. He’s also very close to his sister Beth who lives with him.
Haven and Jake end up working together for the magazine that she works for. She got a great opportunity to interview a very popular movie star that is currently filming a new movie. Jake who is a friend of Havens boss ask him to be the photographer since he has a personal relationship with said movie star.
Their relationship starts off rocky because Haven thinks Jake is a spoiled rich boy that lives off his daddies money. And Jake thinks Haven is a bitch and would look a lot sexier with her hair down. Slowly he begins to tear down her walls and she lets him see a side of her only a few selected people see.
This is a wonderful story about two people that come from different background, but need each other more than they know.
I also request that I get part two from Louise Bay ASAP!!
Haven Daniels is Features Editor at Rallegra Magazine and is seeking a promotion to become Depute Editor at the company. She needs that one feature gig that will get her where she wants to be.
After the usual Monday morning meeting she was finally offered a piece that would take her to a new level she is aiming for. However, getting this opportunity means working with Jake “Harry” Harrison, a man that she classifies as an arrogant, entitled, spoiled rich kid and feels like this job is no big deal to him. The partnership in this project is important and she would do what it takes to prove her worth and determine to not have anyone stand in her way.
I needed to bury the very thought of him. He wasn’t my type. I didn’t like men like him. I liked men who were ambitious and successful, kind and funny.
In the first part of the novella set we get to learn and know of Jake and Haven’s background and characteristics and begin to see a connection form between the two of them. There are many back and forth heated moments that kept the story going. Then the end of part one leaves you with a cliffhanger that will make assumption(s) come to light. This 3.5 stars read was a good intro to this three part series.
I would describe one of my favourite authors as a total machine. This lady just keeps those stories coming and it is always such a delight to read them. This is a brand new series from Louise and I had every hope it was going to be a fantastic read.
The story is about Haven Daniels and Jake "Harry" Harrison. She is a bit of a bitch that doesn't seem to have a filter; uptight and smart with it. He is a very rich, good looking man who is overly confident. Haven likes to tell Jake what she thinks which to him is a bit of a challenge, but he finds her very attractive regardless of how she behaves around him. He is the type of man Haven feels she should steer well clear of.
Quote: Harry ~ "Wow, you're a bitch."
Haven ~ "So I've been told. You're a spoiled, entitled rich boy. We all have our crosses to bear."
These two are forced to work together. She works for a magazine which is run by a friend of Jake's, and is asked as a favour to do a piece on a pop star come movie star in the making. The reason Haven was chosen had me groaning as it comes across how jealously malicious people are about Haven who is an attractive and talented woman. So Haven and Jake’s chemistry slowly burns to a build-up eventually exploding.
description
Quote: Jake ~ "I want you to undress for me and lie on the bed, Leave those shoes on."
What I love about this story is it wasn't just about the two protagonists. There was some great supporting characters. Beth, who is Jake’s sister, and lives with him. Haven’s best friend, Ash, who was very funny, and Haven’s brother, Luke. The banter between them had me smiling every time they featured during the story.
Why I gave this book five stars is not just because Louise knows how to write a good story, but because it is totally different from previous works. As much as I like the passion and intensity that smacks into you as soon as you start reading, this story was different in a way that although there is chemistry and intensity, we get to see more of who they are first.
Of course, there is going to be two other parts after this first segment and of course, we have been left wanting to know what could happen next. There was a bit of a cliff-hanger leaving my gut feeling uneasy. I’m sure there’ll be lot of angst and I am hoping for more passion, too. As per usual, the author has offered us a playlist to this fantastic new story and in the words of Coldplay, I would call this read 'Magic!'
4 Star Review by Jen Skewes
Louise Bay has done it again. She has managed to capture me from the start with the start of a new novella series that I already know I am going to love. I have already fallen in love with these characters and cannot wait to see what happens next.
Haven Daniels has just landed the one interview that she has been hoping for. This is the one that will help her get the promotion that she wants and deserves. But when she is paired up with Harry, her boss’s rich friend she hopes that he doesn’t ruin it all for her. Haven is a bit of a bitch at times but she is also very smart and very beautiful. When she meets Harry she assumes that he is just some rich, arrogant, trust fund kid who her boss hired to help out, not caring too much about the job that they he has to do. And being the loose-lipped bitch that she can be at times she makes sure she tells Harry just that. Realizing her mistake, she apologizes and hopes that they can move on and be able to work together.
Harry is sexy, hard working and yes very rich. But Haven's perception of him is quite possibly all wrong. She knows how to push buttons, she knows how to completely frustrate him but when he sees Haven he sees this beautiful closed off woman. And the thing is that she doesn’t know just how beautiful she really is. He wants her, even if he can’t understand why. She isn’t the women that he usually dates, for one she is not materialistic by any means and that shows in the way she dresses alone. And that is one of the many reasons why he wants her. Jake Harrison usually gets what he wants and he wants Haven. But can he make her see how much she wants him as well?
I just loved these two. For one I loved the back and forth banter and the sexual tension between these two was completely off the charts. You were waiting for that moment for the both of them to just explode! Harry wasn’t the person that Haven thought he was and in fact he was cry different than what she thought. Yes he was rich but he really didn’t flaunt his wealth. He has a soft spot for his sister and would do anything for her. He may be rich but he has a heart and is a good guy. And you can see how hard he is starting to fall for Haven.
I loved Haven and her attitude. But I also loved the relationship that she had with her best friend Ava and her brother Luke. This is the start of another great serial by Ms. Bay. We were left hanging in a big way and I cannot see what happens. When Haven finds out the truth about why she was really given the interview what will she do? And what will this men for her and Harry!!. I need the next installment now!
I love jake.he’s quiet yet powerful. Louisa bay has done it again with this new series. I thought her Empire state series was hot and sexy but this one is steamy, snarky, smexy and just as addictive. Each character brings a different dimension and Jake shows us you judge a smoldering sexy bloody character by its cover. And what a cover he is. A self made man who is humble about his talents and achievements doing a favor for a friend by helping out as a photographer for the magazine he works at.
Haven is stuffy a little stuck up, judgemental and opinionated. She has the capacity to be sweet hut doesn’t portray that too many. She jumps to conclusions without finding out about situations or the person. She criticizes buoyant handle others doing the same to her. She was totally rude to jake from the beginning judging him by his association to her boss Robert who can be a total douche canoe.
Jake calls haven on her snap judgements and gives her doses of reality as they work together. He finds himself really liking her and her spunk. Her unassuming beauty fascinates him but she is a enigma. One he wishes to crack.
Watching them learn about each other while on assignment is like the odd couple. Two opposites bathqing each other. yet both like one another and intrigued by each other.
As they grow closer, they begin to open up to each other and it’s a fascinating evolution from snark to tolerate to friends to lovers. Each step having jake fall harder for haven. Haven begins to let her guard down but not quite. Jake wants more and she fears he only wants a one time moment.
A misunderstanding that jake isn’t aware of but that haven has yet again,judged and drew a conclusion before knowing all has now put this gorgeous beginning of a relationship in the danger zone.
This is the snarky, fun and sexy story of the beginning of jake and haven. A story that had you at odds with haven and her unfiltered opinions and yet you’re drawn to her and begin to see what it is that has captured jake and keeps him enthralled. The story of jake and how he has found his equal in telling it like it is and has him falling for her. The ending has you like the women the Mervyn’s commercial who is saying open open open except we the reader are going more more more…
We are back in London in Louise Bay’s new series. Meet Haven, Features Editor at UK’s premier woman’s magazine. She is totally dedicated to her job. So much so that she is known as being a bit bitchy with her co-workers, but her eye is on the Deputy Editor position and she is taking no prisoners as she pursues this goal. Punctual to a fault, work always done perfectly and her appearance, well plain would be an understatement.
In walks Jack, into a meeting that is, at her office. He is a friend of her wealthy boss. She can’t help but notice how gorgeous he is, but we are talking about Haven here and business always come first in her mind. When she finds out that she is the one who was picked to do a big feature article on a well known musical celebrity who is starring in her first movie, she is jumping for joy inside. This could be the stepping stone she needs to get her the coveted position she desires. Although, when is told that Jack will be the photographer working with her on the article, she is not happy at all. She is worried he is not good enough and will hurt the article. She thinks he is just some rich trust kid with time on his hands and strongly resents everything about him. Yes, she has him all figured out, without even having a five minute conversation with him.
The characters and the storyline deepens throughout the book. Jack sees the beauty of Haven even though she is so bitchy to him but it doesn’t deter him from drawing her out from under her armor to find a really fun sexy girl underneath. Jack would be hard to resist though because he a sweet, sexy, hot guy that knows his way around a woman’s body. Can’t wait to see where this relationship goes. I loved this first book.
Dearest Fallers:
There are a couple things I can count on in life: my favorite baseball team losing a lot of games, The Princess Bride's ability to make me grin, and Louise Bay crafting an escapist story that makes even a cynic like me a biy of a romantic. And that's why I give What the Lightning Sees four and a half leaves!
Haven and Jake hate each other. Well, to be more specific, Haven hates Jake and all rich, spoiled playboys like him. Jake doesn't hate Haven... but at first he thinks she's a little plain and doesn't have time for her attitude problem. But when they're thrown together in Paris for an article about a misbehaving starlet? All bets are off.
I absolutely adored the chemistry between Jake and Haven in this book (even though we only got a taste because this is only part one of the series). Neither of them fall for the other at first sight, but acknowledge they're attracted to one another...and that's when thins get steamy. Louise Bay writes sexy literature like a pro...but she giveth and taketh away. Haven and Jake have a couple mis-starts (which are so frustrating but so realistic), but when they get going? *whew*
The only thing I didn't like was that this story felt a little formulaic... I wasn't surprised at all by any of the progressions of events... so I got a little bored with the story. Other than that, this was a fun, quick story, Fallers. Snap it up quick, in time for the next installment to come out!
im really fond of Louise Bay writing, i really enjoyed her previous stories, and she did it again with this one.
"What lightning sees" is a 3 part story, a novella trilogy, the story of Haven Daniels, a very work driven girl, she has had to work hard her ass off to achieve success or anything really, she despises people whom have had everything handed in silver platter to them and just being sloppy..like it wouldn't matter if they lose the job cause their trust funds are huge..and they just dont care..
And theres Jake Harrison, a very wealthy and handsome man, used to get his way in everything and has had better luck in life..
After been teamed up together by haven boss, and against her better judgement..Haven "Prejudged" Jake personality just by appearances and how the crowd of wealthy people she is used to see around her boss. But will jake really be, how she think he is just because he is rich?
As always, Louise builds the sexual tension between her characters in adequate pace..then she teases you..and boom..hotness overload.
I think jake have made a big impression on me..maybe bigger than Ethan from Empire state trilogy, and i was smitten with that guy...but dont know..jake seems sweet and at the same time so alpha male...i loved the combination. and haven...well..she's a real bitch..i like it..not the whiney heroine...though she's vulnerable deep down..and jake can see right through it.. Im looking fwd to continuing this story and see how it ends.
This is the first book I've read about this author and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.
Jake Harrison agrees to do a favor for a friend and work as a photographer for a piece to be showcased in his magazine, it doesn't hurt that Jake knows the subject to be interviewed.
There, he meets Haven Daniels.
From the very beginning these two have an oil and vinegar type of relationship, mostly because Haven make assumptions about Jake and she sees him as everything she dislikes.
Haven is a bit of a bitch at work and although her attitude is kind of a turn off, she has reasons to feel and act that way. Jake has a way with Haven and kind of brings her real personality to come out to play, once this happens the relationship is a joy to watch.
But with all good things there's always a bend in the road, and that's where Louise leaves us as this first installment ends.
I very much enjoyed the book as well as the author's writing style. Her characters seem to be complex and well developed. In the next installments I want to find out more not only about their backgrounds but I really want to see what's going to happen with Haven and Jake and how things are going to work themselves out.
All and all, a good start to this series.
"Trust me baby, I'm going to make you feel so good."
I am a huge fan of Louise Bay's work and was excited to read her next piece of writing, and trust me, it didn't disappoint.
The story is about a girl called Haven, who's a bit of a cow, until you get to know her a little better. When you do, you realise she is just a lovely person, who is just getting by in life with the help of her best friend Ash and her brother Luke, making the best of her job and her personal life.
She's quite sceptical and doesn't take fools gladly, especially when she meets Jake 'Harry' Harrison, the new freelance photographer, who is helping out at the magazine she works for. Because of the nature of the job, then end up working together on an assignment, that see's them spending time in Paris.
The banter between the two characters is brilliant. They are totally honest with other, maybe a little too honest sometimes, which is refreshing.
As with Louise Bay's stories, there is a sexual element to it which I think adds to the brilliance of the authors writing.
"The pleasure rattled through every muscle and bone and exploded in my head, across my skin and deep within me."
A well deserved 5 stars.
This is a review of both Parts 1 and 2 of this series. When the writing is fabulous and the story is great... WOW!
Jake and Haven start off on opposite sides of the rainbow. I have to admit, I did not like Haven very much at first. I thought she was bratty, prejudiced and yes the B**ch word. Very soon though, I realized this was her armor against being hurt by those around her. It was very convincing until she started baring her soul. Her insecurities tugged at my heart and I was her fan from that point on.
Jake is easy to like. Hey, this man pulled himself up by the "boot straps" and took care of his sister when she needed him the most. He is all heart but careful to not let his emotions carry him without his brain exerting control.
Their love affair is one to uplift and build self esteem. Yet, obstacles make their time together be like flashes of light in the dark. Brief and gone in a flash. Is this why the title is what it is?
Just when you think the couple is going to get a break, life happens. May 25th cannot come too soon for me! I am dying to know what happens next.
