Grumpy and Goal: A Sweet Romantic Comedy

Rate this book
A grumpy goalie and a sunshine-hearted girl collide, sparking a connection neither of them can ignore.
When Abby Carter’s best friend, Jaclyn, lands her dream job with the Carolina Bears organization, Abby is thrilled for her. The perks are incredible, and when Jaclyn invites Abby to a welcome event, Abby expects good food, easy conversation, and maybe a few autographs. What she didn’t expect is a collision with the team’s newly traded, grumpy goalie, Nick Ellis.
Fresh off a trade he never wanted, Nick is all scowls—the opposite of Abby’s cheerful, go-with-the-flow personality. Yet somehow, they keep running into each other around town, and with every unexpected encounter, the spark between them burns hotter.

Abby knows she should keep her distance. Nick’s walls are firmly in place due to the aftermath of a life he didn’t choose. But the more time they spend together, the more the man beneath the pads and tough exterior begins to shine through.
Abby might be the last person Nick ever expected to skate into his life… but she just might be the one who can melt his icy goalie heart.

A cheerful and positive nurse at a dermatological clinic. A grumpy hockey goalie who just got traded against his will. They don’t have much in common, but when Abby and Nick meet sparks start to fly.

A sweet hockey romance with dual POV and one of my favorite tropes: grumpy/sunshine! I recognise myself a lot in Abby's positive attitude (except that she loves mornings!), and since I love hockey I'm instantly entertained! The author also throws in a bit of drama in form of an ex girlfriend who wants a second chance with Nick, so it's not smooth sailing all the way. I still feel like it goes quite fast and I would have liked the book to be longer; the ending especially felt a bit abrupt. But overall "Grumpy and Goal" is a perfect book when you want a snack between heavier books!

* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *

Adorably sweet and swoony!!! And HOCKEY!!! I'm still in my hockey era! Who else is with me? I don't think I'll ever not be in my hockey era! There's a line in here that one character basically says there's nothing quite like being at the game in person. It's an experience unlike anything else. (I'm totally paraphrasing that but you get the idea.) And I have to agree. If you haven't had the chance to go to a hockey game, go! It's loud, and crazy, and wild, and so much fun! I haven't lived close by where a hockey team plays or where games happen but growing up I did. And I would go with my dad off and on when his company had tickets and would give them to him to take his kids to. It was SO MUCH FUN!!! Then I went on a couple of dates to hockey games! I keep trying to coordinate going to a game when I travel but so far it hasn't quite worked out. But someday! My hubby hasn't ever been and I think he'd have a blast!

All of these hockey books will have to suffice for now (or watching games on tv, but not the same as live), and Abby and Nick's story is just so much fun! I adore their meet-cute(s) and how they become such great friends. There are some ups and downs but mostly from outside sources, which you'll have to read the book to understand. But I loved so much how they navigated them. How Abby was positive in her personality and just brought so much joy to Nick's life, especially with the changes that he's had to navigate with this current hockey season!

The chemistry and sweet romance had me smiling and turning the pages quickly! I just loved it all!!!

Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

It was cute, but there wasn’t a lot to it. I always felt like reading a book rather being impersonate and I just didn’t love the writing. Also, Nick was supposed to be grumpy for the grumpy sunshine dynamic, but he didn’t seem very grumpy at all.

Positivity
This was such a sweet and easy read. Abby is positivity personified and I couldn’t love her attitude more, there needs be more people like her the world.
Nick was understandably upset at the start but eventually realised what a good thing he’d been given.
This has great, relatable characters, beautiful supportive families and friends, hockey action, banter and sweet romance. I look forward to more from the Carolina Bears.

Sometimes people forget everything that entails being a professional athlete. We see the glamour side of it all, but don’t fully remember the enormous amount of work that goes into it. Melissa Baldwin does allow some insight to how a player copes with being traded when they were not expecting or even wanting to trade. I can fully understand how that would be hard to swallow. In Grumpy and Goal we get to see how a player can be misperceived due to this type of life changing decision.

Nick was traded unexpectedly. He had to leave behind his home, friends, and a team he absolutely loved playing for. So yeah he is perceived as grumpy, when in fact, he is still coming to terms with everything that has happened while getting to know and finding his rhythm with his new town and team. I never read him as ungrateful or moody, just coming to terms with everything. Yet, things begin to turn around when he meets someone who is the total opposite of him. Maybe there’s a silver lining after all.

Abby sees the bright side of everything. This ability to see the good and beauty around her comes in handy. When she gives Nick a tour of the town and he begins to see it through her eyes, he begins to have a change of heart. However, Abby doesn’t let people use her sunshine personality against her. She is comfortable saying no and calling people out when they need it, which at times Nick needs. She really helps Nick open up, but at the same time can see he is holding something back with her.

Melissa brings sweet romance to every book she writes, but there are ups and downs for the MCs as well. While mainly light hearted, this book does deal with demands from people neither can fully ignore and both our MCs having to make decisions about their futures. Nick and Abby truly were a delight to read about and get to know. Their chemistry is immediately felt and continues to grow as the book progresses. Another winner from Melissa!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

✨️Grumpy and goal✨️

🏒A book by Melissa Baldwin landed in my mailbox!! I can always read books by this author. Thanks to her lovely writing style, these books are a real page-turner. And it’s a hockey romance to boot, what more could you want? Hockey books are becoming increasingly popular, and this story especially so.
Abby is a very cheerful woman, completely herself, and has everything she wants. Nick, on the other hand, has just moved against his will, as he has to go play for another team. The only bright spot is Abby. From the day they meet, their relationship is very pleasant and heartwarming to read. They respect each other. The dates they had together were so fun to read! If you like hockey romance grumpy x sunshine books, this is definitely highly recommended!!

Grumpy and Goal by Melissa Baldwin was a hard to put down adorably sweet story. This story introduces the reader to Abigail Sue Carter, aka Abby, and Nick Ellis, the goalie who was recently traded to the Carolina Bears. They meet by nearly colliding in the local coffee shop.

Abby is perpetual sunshine and a positive person finding the bright side. She is making her Friday morning coffee run for the office when she nearly runs Nick over. Nick is a professional hockey goalie who has just been blindsided by his trade to the Carolina Bears. This is his first trade ever; he had been very happy and comfortable with the previous team. Abby is enjoying spending time with the team through her friend’s new job but also getting to know Nick, she knows that she needs to keep some distance, but she can’t seem to remind her heart. Nick must learn to deal with his frustration of being traded, learn to embrace his new team and figure out his new feelings for Abby. Just when he starts to, his parents come for a visit with a surprise. Life is never boring.

This is a cute, quick read. I appreciated the way that Melissa not only told the love story but also looked at took the time to consider how life might look for a professional athlete whose entire world has changed without anyone asking for their option or permission. It makes you stop and think about what it might be like to have your entire world turned upside down. I couldn’t put the book down and I would definitely recommend this story. I think I am in my hockey phase! Sports fan or not, it is a great story.

I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving an honest and volunteer review.

New town, new people, not having a say in the move = grumpy
Loves early mornings, loves helping people feel confident, seeing the bright side of life = sunshine
Grumpy + Sunshine = this fun sweet story from Melissa Baldwin

Nick is a hockey goalie just traded away from the team he loved to a new one. It isn't that he is really grumpy, he just hasn't had time to comprehend the way his life has been turned upside down without him having any say in it. Yes, he still gets to play, so his job is fantastic, he just has a lot of adjustment to do. Including his attitude.

Abby runs into him, almost literally, over and over. Their interactions go from almost clumsy to kind to friendly. Abby has the bright outlook on life and it pours over into her interactions. She brings a light to the world around her that everyone is brightened by.

Nick needs that sunshine that can melt his icy outlook on life and Abby is just the person to bring it to him. The fact that Abby knew next to nothing about hockey but paid attention to him anyway, trying to help him learn to like his new home, caught Nick's attention. She is different than he expected and that changes his world.

The side characters Eloise and Jackie are just a wonderful as the main characters. Quirky, energetic, fun - they help make the story interesting and different.

This was a clean, fun, enjoyable romantic story around the world of hockey. It is a great little easy read that made a reading afternoon pass pleasantly.

I received an ebook copy of this title from the author. All opinions are my own.

Nick is a professional hockey player, and he is pure grumpiness from the inside out. He was already a little grumpy after breaking up with a long time girlfriend a few months back. Now he has been unexpectedly traded to a new hockey team which has made him even more grumpy.

Abby, on the other hand, is pure sunshine. There is nothing fake about Abby. She just sees the world a little differently than most people, and lives a happy life by choice. Nick cannot quite figure her out. His lens of the world is cloudy, whereas hers is bright and sunny. The more time he spends with her, the more the ice melts, which is always my favorite part.

Grumpy sunshiny romances are one my favorites because I love it when the grump starts to see the world a little more like the sunshiny character.

This was a charming and sweet romance filled with likable characters. Nick was likable, even when he was being grumpy, as I could understand some of his grumpy behavior. Everything about Abby was likable. You could not help but like her. I always enjoy a hockey romance too because you get the romance, along with the exciting sporting event.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a very sweet read. It’s always refreshing to read a clean, kisses-only romance, especially when it features hockey.

Nick Ellis has just been transferred to the Carolina Bears, and he’s less than happy about it. He was comfortable in his old team; he had friends and family there and thought he was safe. The transfer came from nowhere, and suddenly he’s alone in a strange town and extremely grumpy about it. Then he literally bumps into sunshine in human form, Abby Carson. She finds the best in any situation.

The attraction between Nick and Abby is instant but sweet. They spend time getting to know each other, go on dates and yes, Nick introduces her to his parents when they come to town for some of his games. I loved that they actually talked to each other about the issue of Nick’s ex. There’s no real miscommunication between them, apart from a minor fake headache from Abby after meeting the ex. Although from what we see of Ashley, she’d give anyone a headache, fake or not.

With no third-act breakup and just sweet kisses, this is a really easy read, comfy and brings the warm fuzzies very easily. Highly recommended.

Grumpy and Goal is a cute, sweet, low-angst hockey romance. It has such a light, feel-good vibe and was really easy to read.

Nick is a tender grump with a soft heart. He’s thoughtful, genuine, and completely smitten with Abby. She’s all sunshine and positive energy, which is exactly what he needs.

Miscommunication is listed as a trope, but to me it felt more like outside drama from Nick’s ex. Nick and Abby actually talked things through, faced it head-on, and handled it like adults, which was really refreshing. Abby didn’t overreact and gave Nick the chance to explain. As someone who’s sensitive to other-women drama, I appreciated how this conflict was done.

Overall, this was a cute, low-stress read that I flew through. If you’re in the mood for something sweet and easy with grumpy x sunshine vibes, this one’s worth checking out.

If you are looking for a wholesome, delightful escape that will leave you wearing a permanent grin, Grumpy and Goal is the perfect pick. This story is a "clean" romance at its finest—proving you don't need spice to have an incredible amount of chemistry and heart.
This is a classic grumpy/sunshine dynamic set against the backdrop of professional hockey. We follow Nick, a goalie who has just been traded and is struggling to see the silver lining of his new situation. He’s lonely, missing his old teammates, and stuck in a bit of a funk. Enter Abby—a cheerful nurse who literally specializes in healthy skin and a healthy outlook on life.
Their journey from a "meet-cute" at a coffee shop to a friendship that slowly turns into something more is handled beautifully. I loved watching Abby patiently help Nick navigate his new hometown, eventually making him realize that this trade might have been the best thing to ever happen to him.
This is a sweet, "no-spice" hockey romance that is heavy on the flirting and even heavier on the heart. It is the perfect "pick-me-up" read for anyone who loves a story about finding the positive in a tough situation and falling in love along the way.

Melissa Baldwin hit this one in the net for a SCORE!! As soon as Melissa comes out with a new book I know it's going to be a must read! This book had me laughing, smiling like crazy, and left me with a wonderful ending! This was the perfect grumpy / sunshine story and their banter was chef's kiss.

Abby is a happy go lucky type of woman. She had such a positive attitude and a big heart. She was everything Nick was not. He's mad because his team traded him and now he has to start with a new team in a new town. But after meeting Abby and her giving him a tour of the town his attitude starts changing. She gets him to see life in a different light. There will be some up and down moments but together they can figure out anything.

This was the perfect hockey romance! If you love a book that will make you laugh, smile and just make you forget about life, then this book will be perfect for you! I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Thank you Melissa Baldwin for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

Okay, Nick and Abby were green flags to each other, and they managed the drama of exes and kisses at games so well!

Also, Eloise and Jaclyn are awesome friends! More friends like this, please!!
Content considerations: inconsistent ex partner, some, I think dating drama, and intense hockey games 😂 okay, maybe not crazy intense but a little intense.

Best quotes:
“She inspires me in ways I didn’t expect. Whether it’s hockey, life, or just trying to be a better person, she makes me want to show up and do things right. Every day I feel myself falling a little deeper in love with her, and it’s both exciting and a little surreal to think about what the future might hold for us. Whatever comes next, I know it will be good because I’m with her.”

It’s wild how quickly life can change. Lately, it feels like everyone around me is hitting major, unexpected milestones, and I’m loving every second of it.”
“I don’t,” I blurt out.
He blinks.
“I don’t have any doubts,” I repeat quickly. “Not about you. And not about us.”

hockey!

Sports romance is so fun to read especially when we get to see the characters grow. I’ve learned in life there is always our plan and HIS plan. This is true for these two. Nick got traded to another team that felt like a the rug being pulled out only to find out that it was in the plan all along. He was with a team that had high rankings only to step down. The grumpiness was fierce, but meeting Abby proved there was still softness under it all. Slowly he started to accept his new team, his playing got better, and they increased in rank. His feelings for Abby did too with her positive outlook on life. Of course there was a curveball that did its best to tear it all down, but love always wins. I can’t wait to read the next one this fall!

“The most important advice I could ever give you is that your wife is usually right.”

…”smile even when you don’t feel like it.”

“I told him how you always taught me to look for the good in situations—even when things get hard.”

A wonderfully sweet tale of unexpected love
She was pure sunshine. He was a thunder cloud. Abby chose to look for the good in situations and the world around her. Nick was one hundred percent grump. A professional hockey player, he had been traded when he didn’t want it. His girlfriend broke up with him after two years because she didn’t like the demands of his career. He was now living in a town he didn’t know, playing with a team and coach he didn’t know, and he saw nothing good. Then Abby on a whim offered him a tour of the town and his world began to change. Soon Abby became important to him. However, well meaning parents and an ex wanting another chance, soon force Nick to step back and decide what his future will look like. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

What a cute story this was! I always love a good grumpy/sunshine and Nick and Abby nailed that dynamic so perfectly. After being traded from the hockey team he loved and adjusting to a new town and a new team, Nick definitely gives off some grump vibes. Abby is his complete opposite... always bringing a little sunshine wherever she goes... sunshine that Nick definitely needs in his life! They had such an easy chemistry between them right from the start. Theirs was definitely a quicker romance, but it didn't feel at all rushed... just right for them. And not without its challenges and a little drama to keep things interesting! If you love hockey romance and the perfect grumpy/sunshine duo, this is one not to be missed.

Grumpy and Goal is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.

Adorable, Clean, Grumpy vs. Sunshine - She is Just What He Needs!

I loved this book and could not put it down - from the "meet-cute" literal bumping into each other sparks, banter, and the fact that Abby's sunshine would not give into Nick's gloom and she was determined to make him like his new town. In the meantime, he did appreciate her sunshine and the fact that she knew nothing about hockey but liked him anyway so he appreciated her learning and coming to his games to cheer for him even more. Of course there is an ex and his family throwing a wrench in the works to keep the pages turning but no spoilers here :)! It is part of a series but is easily read as a standalone although I personally can't wait for the next one - Enjoy!

I was sent an ARC by the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Is a sweet sunshine/grumpy, found family, hockey romantic comedy with no cliffhanger.
Some of the lines I really like --- "Everything happens for a reason. And maybe this move is the right thing. There are so many possibilities, and you never know what doors this will open.” --- “Look how mad he is. It’s literally a time-out for bratty hockey players.” --- "She never pretended that bad things don’t happen. She always emphasized how everyone has unexpected and even terrible days. It’s all part of life, but she believed that what matters is how you choose to deal with the hard things when they come.” ---
---
What's Jaclyn up to? What's Matt up to? What's Ashley up to? These and other questions will all be answered.
I loved Abby and Nick's story and I'm sure you will too. I've loved everyone of her books that I've read and I can't wait to read her next book.

You’ll love this story about Nick and Abby. Abby’s best friend Jaclyn just landed her dream job working for the NHL team, the Carolina Bears, and she’s invited Abby as her plus one to the season opening launch party. Nick was recently traded to the Bears, which really unsettled him as he had no notice that he was being traded as he was the star goalie with the Indiana Ice Hawks. So, he’s not at all happy to be in North Carolina. Abby and Nick meet at the launch party and hit it off. As they become closer, Nick becomes happier with his move to the Bears. But when his parents visit and bring his ex-girlfriend to his game, Abby starts to have doubts especially when Nick’s ex makes some false claims. Can their relationship survive?

Loved it!

Grumpy and Goal is absolutely adorable and swoony — the kind of hockey romance that makes you want in on the hockey action - especially now during playoffs! The grumpy goalie meets sunshine girl trope is well-worn for a reason, and there is great banter, wonderful chemistry, and plenty of laughs. I loved the slow-burn and Nick and Abby's dynamic is genuinely fun to watch unfold. As a hockey fan, I loved getting to run wild with my imagination through all the rink details. Oh, and the arena on the cover of the book? It bears a striking resemblance to Ball Arena — home ice for the Colorado Avalanche! Overall, super sweet, fun, and hard to put down!

Nick is Mr. grumpy after being traded from the hockey team in Indiana to the Carolina Bears. He got along great with his team and fans, so he couldn’t figure out why they would trade him. This sweet story takes Nick out of his comfort zone, will he sink or swim? It may depend on Abby, a cute girl he ran into at the coffee shop. This was a pretty instant love story. It was fun getting to know the characters and the transformation of Nick. How can you be grumpy when you’re around a pretty girl that is always positive. The story has a little snippet of drama, other than that It was good, clean, fun. Sweet kisses hockey talk and no foul language made this an enjoyable afternoon read.

I loved this story! The way Abby and Nick connected and began to fall for each other felt so realistic to me. These two were adults in the way they communicated with each other and discussed the things that happened in the past. I loved that Abby could see how difficult the trade and move and been on Nick and that Nick felt like he could really share with her about the way it had made him feel.

This story made me happy and hopeful for these two as I read it. Whenever they came upon a situation that they had to deal with, they worked through it with honesty, which was refreshing to read about.

Sweet, fun contemporary hockey romance

Abby and Nick’s romance was a lovely fall between two honest hearts! Loved their meeting and second actual introduction. Their connection, Abby’s kind, positive attitude and outlook, along with her fun loving nature was the perfect medicine to help Nick get over his trade disappointment.
Loved their sweet, genuine moments, texts, conversations and all the small moments that make a romance including their fun chemistry and connection. The hockey backstory was a fun setting, and made for fun moments as well with the game tension, and Abby willing to learn the game and loving the energy and excitement.

Such a fun read and quick read. This is a feel good type of book.

Nick isn't too grumpy, yet he has every reason to be very grumpy. He is traded from a hockey team he gave everything to a new team in a new city and state. Plus he is healing from a broken relationship. He meets Abby just when he needs some positive energy. Abby is the type of friend we all need. Actually webshould be as positive as Abby is!

I really enjoyed that this wasn't one of those love/hate relationships. There is chemistry and attraction right off the bat. I want more of Abby and Nick!

This was a cute hockey romance. Both characters were fun to read about and they complimented each other so well! I loved seeing the growth in Nick’s character as he settled into a completely new town, team, and home🥰 the ending was sweet. All around a fun read but it was a little hard for me to really “get into.” Some of the same things were repeated multiple times which didn’t feel like they needed to be there.

Abby Carter’s best friend lands her dream job for the hockey Carolina Bears organization. Abby is Jaclyn’s plus one to a hockey event. At this event she meets the newly traded grumpy goalie Nick.

Nick wants nothing to do with being a Bear…he misses his old team. But that all changes once he meets his opposite Abby!

Tropes:
Hockey romance
Grumpy x sunshine
Opposites attract
Meet cute

Loved everything about this book. I want more in the series!

I absolutely loved this book. Abby is pure happiness and sunshine, when she meets Nick, she feels instant attraction. Then she finds out he is the grumpy goalie after getting an unexpected trade to a new team and city. So, when Abby blurts out that she will help him get acquainted with the town, the fun begins. The fun banter that made me laugh, there were moments that kept me smiling all while reading made this a book I didn’t want to put down, and the ending came too soon. This is such a cute read, you will want to add it to your TBR list for sure!

Nick has just been traded to a new team. The goalie is pretty grumpy about it, but Abby's bright and bubbly personality helps him see the good in his new situation.

Grumpy and Goal just wasn't for me. Both Nick and Abby were very one dimensional and there was not real conflict or character growth for either of them. It was a sweet story, but it lacked a hook.
