O.P. #7

Rate this book
"War is hell," but something about Combat Outpost (COP) Najil seems worse than the old adage traditionally implies.

Ten members of the “Reaper” platoon arrive at COP Najil where the previous unit had hunkered down avoiding something . . . something that they had been unwilling to talk about, before they rushed off the base.

What could scare a company of hardened infantryman?

While the Reapers settle into their new surroundings, strange occurrences become more commonplace. Things only get worse when they are assigned to hold Observation Post (O.P.) #7, while the rest of their unit clears the valley below of the Taliban threat.

How can the Reapers possibly overcome the deadly threat of an unseen enemy as they die one by one?

More importantly, I'm a husband and a father of three, along with a very boring accountant.

This story follows a group of soldiers in Afghanistan. They encounter supernatural happenings with deadly consequences.

The author creates a great sense of Afghanistan and the environment- I believe he has personal experience of the military and it shows. You really feel like you are there. This is the same with the depiction of the group of soldiers. You get a sense of what it's like. The story itself starts off a bit 'Predator' in that a platoon gets deployed to a valley where untoward things have already happened, and then start happening to them. I liked the links to Islamic folklore and the idea that the spirits of another culture could get involved in a war situation. I also liked the creepy little girl Afsoon, who insults them all in such a deadpan way.

The quality of the writing was decent and easy to read. There were a few grammatical errors/typos but these may have been picked up in the pre-publication proof-read. I did feel like this was more of a long short story than a novel (at 183 pages it would be a novella, I suppose) because we don't go very deep with anything, or get to know the characters very well. It's very go go go action action, which is fine, but it felt like there was room for a bit more depth and dimension. I was disappointed in the one female soldier, whose only discernible purpose in the plot was for blokes to have sex with. Then she got all vulnerable and needy after having a realistic nightmare. Wasn't she a soldier too, like the rest? The other soldiers had horrible nightmares too, and didn't get all 'damsel in distress' about it.

I do have to say that the ending really confused me. The story just stops, almost mid-action. I actually went back to check I hadn't missed anything and was uncertain that I'd downloaded the book fully. I am aware that this is the first in a series which will follow the adventures of the Reaper platoon, but if the book is meant to be a serial without a conclusive ending, it should be clearly advertised as such.

Overall, worth a read, especially if you like military stuff and prefer action over character development and plot depth.

I would like to say thank you for allowing me to read and review this book.

I want to start off by saying I never read books like this, that are based in a military setting, and so I have nothing to compare it to. I did find this book interesting though. I absolutely love that that the interpreter was from Alabama. I am as well, so Roll Tide!

Honestly, the book started slow but picked up pace quick and just continued on. I got to the point where I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. This book was a crazy, scary, and a very good read. Definitely one I'd recommend. Only one question though, was the ending left open for another book or was it left open so the reader is left to wonder?...Stormi

page after page just to make sure my favorites made it to the end. I had intended to read the book over a weekend, instead I ended up reading it all in one sitting and was left thinking about it for days afterwards.

Fenner's experience with deployment and the real horrors of war shows through loud and clear in this book, bringing an eerie realism to it that made me wonder where the line is drawn between fact and fiction.

If you love the horror genre, or a fan of war stories, this book is a must read.

I can't wait to read more from this author, and hope to see a book 2 that continues to follow Trent Stone and the rest of the cast.
