Somatic Intelligence: Leadership Requires More than IQ and EQ

Rate this book
What if your greatest leadership asset isn't your mind, but your body?

In Somatic Intelligence, executive coach Rebecca Arora introduces a transformative new framework for leading from the body up. Most leadership development focuses on mindset and emotional intelligence, but the body is even more foundational. When leaders tune into their bodyset-the postures, pace, and flexibility of their physical form-they can immediately access greater clarity, presence, and influence.

Grounded in over 15 years of coaching executives and C-suite leaders, Arora's method reveals six archetypes of high-achieving professionals-including the Achiever, the Controller, the Perfectionist, and more-each with its own hidden somatic patterns. This book offers practical tools tailored to each type, helping leaders shift unproductive behaviors at the root.

Designed for executives navigating pressure, change, and complexity, Somatic Intelligence is both a guide and an to reconnect with your body, expand your leadership capabilities, and lead with your whole self.

Rebecca Arora is a former tech co-founder turned executive coach who works with C-suite leaders across the globe. With over 15 years of experience in entrepreneurship, product strategy, and management consulting, she understands the pressure, pace, and politics of executive life, and what it takes to succeed within it.

As a trained somatic practitioner, Rebecca brings a rare ability to read posture, breath, and micro-movement as tools for transformation. Her coaching blends strategic insight with deep body-based awareness, helping senior leaders scale wisely, build resilient teams, and lead with clarity and presence.

About the author

Rebecca Arora is an executive coach who brings together two worlds: the fast-paced demands of Silicon Valley leadership and the deep, body-based wisdom of somatic healing traditions.

She began her career at Accenture and spent years inside Fortune 100 companies, navigating toxic cultures and a relentless pace. Burnout eventually brought her to Esalen in Big Sur, California, where nine months of immersive training led her to Zen Bodywork™, rooted in the teachings of Ida Rolf. She experienced firsthand how quickly the body can shift what the mind alone cannot.

That discovery became the foundation of everything she does now. Rebecca has spent over 15 years coaching C-suite leaders at some of Silicon Valley's most admired companies. Her clients don't just think their way to change. They become it.

Her book, Somatic Intelligence: Leadership Requires More than IQ and EQ, is written for leaders who sense that thinking harder isn't the answer.

Rebecca grew up in Singapore and currently splits her time between California and Japan.

From the Studio to the Workplace: A Personal Reflection
The Missing Language of Movement

I have been a dancer since I was three years old. For most of my life, dancing—along with yoga, running, and Zumba—served as a lifeline that saved me during times of overwhelming stress. While I always knew intuitively that movement worked to balance my cognitive and emotional states, I lacked the words to explain why. Reading Somatic Intelligence provided the missing link, finally giving me the awareness and language to connect my physical body to my mental and emotional health. It transformed my understanding of intelligence into a complete, three-dimensional picture.

The Speed of an "Achiever"

Through the lens of this book, I recognized myself as an Achiever through and through. I have always been competitive with others and myself, a trait noted by my family, friends, and coaches. However, this drive has a physical shadow: my professional feedback often highlights that I move and think too fast for others to follow.

Before this, I hadn't made the connection between my personal habits—like running—and the "Achiever pace" I bring into leadership. I now see how speed manifests in my personal life and ripples into my professional world, sometimes creating barriers in leadership.

Insights and Archetypes

One of the most grounding aspects of the book was the realization that even highly put-together leaders face these same somatic struggles. Seeing bits and pieces of my own story reflected in the examples helped me realize that my "Achiever" patterns are not unique flaws, but physical habits that can be shifted.

The most immediate shift for me is the mantra: Go slow to go fast. By understanding my own archetype, I have gained a much-needed perspective on how others perceive me and developed a deeper empathy for how different archetypes face their own unique struggles.

Why This Matters

I believe this book is essential for anyone looking to bridge the gap between their physical presence and their professional impact. Between the practical self-reflections, the archetype summaries, and the "love letter" included in the text, it serves as a powerful guide for Somatic Intelligence.

I’m someone who’s pretty in tune with what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling. But there have been many times I’ve almost forgotten that I have a body, strange as that might seem!

Rebecca Acora’s insightful and impactful book Somatic Intelligence: Leadership Requires More than IQ and EQ gave me access to her framework of six archetypes of high-achieving professionals and helped me better understand the connection between physical awareness, leadership patterns, and emotional resilience.

What stood out to me most was how accessible the concepts are. Rebecca’s book offers tangible ways to recognize how stress, perfectionism, and even self-protection show up in the body and influence how we lead, communicate, and make decisions.

As an executive coach, I found this modality incredibly valuable. So many leaders operate almost entirely from intellect and emotional processing, while ignoring the signals their bodies are constantly sending. I can see this being transformative not only for executives navigating high-pressure environments, but also for coaches and people leaders looking to provide more value with clients and teams.

I would absolutely recommend this book to leaders, coaches, HR professionals, and anyone interested in a more integrated, literally “full bodied” approach to leadership. It offers a perspective that feels super grounded and impactful in today’s demanding professional environments. And I love the personal stories, very memorable!

For years, leadership development has focused on what leaders think and feel. Rebecca's work opens a third door: what the body already knows. Somatic Intelligence offers a framework that is both scientifically grounded and immediately practical. The chapter on self-awareness and self-disruption really resonated. Much of coaching is dedicated to cultivating mindset, but Rebecca takes this further, showing how the attitudes and thoughts we hold are mirrored in what she calls our bodyset: the physical holding patterns that reinforce, and sometimes calcify, how we lead. I will be recommending this to clients experiencing the particular exhaustion that comes from leading without a full set of tools. This book fills a real gap. Thank you, Rebecca!

A Practical Guide to Becoming a More Complete Leader

This book was my introduction to somatic intelligence, and what struck me most was how easily I could identify with the examples Rebecca Arora presents. The language is accessible and the exercises are refreshingly simple, making it genuinely easy to put into practice and shift ingrained behaviours. What I found most valuable was understanding how somatic intelligence, when aligned with cognitive and emotional intelligence, can unlock our potential as exceptional leaders. A highly recommended read for anyone looking to lead more authentically.

Somatic Intelligence offers a useful reframe for leaders who already know the cognitive and emotional sides of leadership but haven't given much thought to what their body is doing in the room. The three Ps—pace, posture, and pliability—are simple enough to remember and actually apply in the moment. I found the six leadership archetypes the most useful part; I recognized myself in more than one of them, which is probably the point. This isn't a sweeping revelation so much as a practical nudge toward paying attention to something most of us tune out. Worth reading if you work with people under pressure.

Somatic Intelligence offers a powerful reminder that the quality of our decisions is inseparable from the state of our bodies. It provides leaders a practical framework for recognizing when pressure distorts judgment—and how embodied awareness restores clarity. This book belongs on the reading list of any executive responsible for high-stakes decisions in complex environments.

Rebecca Arora shows us the intelligence that's often overlooked in leadership: the one in our bodies. She makes somatic intelligence practical, giving you concrete practices based on your specific patterns. I recognized myself immediately in her archetypes, and her guidance showed me exactly how to shift what wasn't serving me. If you're ready to unlock your full potential as a leader, this book will show you how.

Most leadership books live from the neck up. This one finally catches up to what I've known in my work as an executive coach for years: the body is full of very important data. Rebecca Arora gives precise language to the work I do in every coaching engagement. The archetypes are practical and immediately recognizable. The 3Ps — pace, posture, pliability — are already in my toolkit. My clients will definitely be reading this!

I’ve always believed in the mind–body connection, but Rebecca explains it with such clarity that it immediately deepens your awareness. Her concept of the “three Ps” gave me practical insights I’m already applying in my daily life and work. A great read for leaders willing to do a bit of self-reflection and make small shifts that can meaningfully change how they show up personally and professionally.
