Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in English and creative writing, she moved to New York City, where she worked in magazine publishing for nine years. She currently lives in Mississippi and New York City.

While I really liked Calamity Club, it was way too long. The story went on over 600 pages, at times the story was repetitive and slow moving. This reader often thought "ok, so where is this going?" Still, I do recommend this book.
The characters were well developed and likeable. It also brought to light a subject that I knew nothing about. Women were sterilized against their will for being "feeble minded" After researching this, it is shocking how long it went on. Calamity Club is a worthy read but it would have been great with some better editing.

I enjoyed this book and recommend reading for the book itself and also for an unvarnished view of how some people could be treated not that long ago. Gave four stars as the book could have been shorter and the ending a bit longer. It seemed like everything wrapped up so quickly for a book of this length.

What a wonderful book. Loved the narrator. Loved the characters, especially Meg. It is a story that takes place in Mississippi in the 1930s about an orphan, the orphanage, her mother quest to get her back and all the obstacles -mostly humans - to overcome.
