I LOVED THIS BOOK!!
I thought a shadow daddy was where it was at. Nooooo shadow daddies have NOTHING on Jax tar daddy yes please!!
First the world building we were given was on a whole new level. I was able to picture everything perfectly in my mind. The characters were top notch. And just the premise of the story was unlike anything I’ve ever read.
Sisk was badass and fell for the bad boy as most of us do. But she could also hold her own and she just wanted to live her life without regrets. Jax, holy moly yes please. He was a tar daddy god and I love him. And you add in that he rides a motorcycle. COUNT ME IN! He would have literally tore the world apart for Sisk and I couldn’t get enough. Their banter back and forth was hilarious. Lou. I wish I had a Lou in my life. A perfect side character!!
There was no point in the story where I could predict exactly what would happen next and I loved that! The spice was HOLY SHIT GOOD! And you add in a sexy motorcycle scene sweet lord 🥵🥵🥵

Overall, this was a 4.5-star read that I'm rounding up to 5 stars!
This book is a sci-fi-coded romance with such a unique take on the supernatural. The author did an excellent job developing the relationship between the MCs, enhancing the story via dual POV and timeline. The pacing of the story stayed steady throughout. There was mystery, drama, and questionable decisions. There was also humor threaded throughout the story that I was giggling at. The flirty banter was fantastic, top tier. There was a mini side plot that was interesting. The found family was wild and a bit toxic, yet refreshing. The MCS were a bit dense and toxic themselves, but overall you just loved them because they loved each other. The MMC being a tar daddy was unique and phenomenal. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. Also, a major benefit, the author has AMAZING character art posted on Instagram that she personally drew. This enhanced the story so much because I was able to picture the characters in my head the whole time.
I was pulled in immediately because the story was dark, sexy, and full of tension from the very first chapter. The chemistry between the MCs was undeniable. I also loved that every chapter alternated both POV and timeline, giving us pieces of the MC’s history as individuals and together, while moving the current story forward. Watching their relationship unfold in the past while seeing them struggle in the present made everything feel layered and intentional. Additionally, the author included so much depth to each main character and the overarching story. I really felt like I understood the main characters and why they thought, felt, and behaved the way they did.
There was also so much mystery from the very beginning. I had questions almost immediately, and instead of giving us all the answers right away, the author let the suspense build naturally. It kept me completely hooked. The tar pit remained mysterious throughout the entire book, and I actually appreciated that. We never learned every detail about it, but because this was ultimately a romance-driven story, I didn't feel like we needed every answer. The mystery added to the atmosphere rather than taking away from the story. I will say, by the end, I still didn’t have all the answers to every. Again, that was fine with me and, that decision to leave questions unanswered leaves the door open in case the author wants to turn this into series.
More about the tar pit: The supernatural element of the tar pit was incredibly unique. The idea of an intelligent element that could influence and control people, especially the MMC, with a whole city built around it was fascinating.
Moving on to the MCs relationship. Their relationship itself was beautifully messy. As teenagers, the MFC was so insecure that she couldn't believe the MMC could truly want her, so she pushed him away instead of communicating. As adults, the roles almost reversed. The MMC loved her so deeply that he became convinced the only way to protect her was to push her away. Neither of them communicated well, and they were both incredibly frustrating at times, as well as dense. I often just wanted to shake them.
What made the book entertaining, though, was that once the MFC realized the MMC really did love her, she didn't suddenly become soft and reassuring. Instead, she antagonized him just enough to rile him up, and honestly, I loved it. Was their relationship healthy? Absolutely not. But the author never pretended it was. The toxicity was acknowledged from the beginning, and because of that, it worked for me. Beneath all of the chaos, these two loved each other unconditionally, and ultimately they needed each other to grow, heal, and move forward. Also, neither of them became a doormat because they were in a relationship. They continued to be themselves and the other person unconditionally loved them for who they were.
Overall, I genuinely liked to the MFC and MMC. They both could stand up for themselves and each other, they fought back, and, no matter what, they would defend each other. They were both stubborn, dense at times (I know I’ve said this before, I just want to emphasize how dense they were at times), and flawed. Yet, that made them more realistic, and I appreciated that. The MMC was the bad boy we all want, and the author’s drawings of him made him so much more sexier since I could picture him in my head. The MFC was the beautiful more innocent woman that was toxically attracted to the bad boy. Again, the authors drawings were amazing and I loved being able to picture her in my head as well. This book had the love story we all enjoy reading.
Scotch the dog added more depth to the story. Everyone loves an amazing dog as an MC’s sidekick, and that’s exactly what he was. I also enjoyed that the word scotch was used as a safe word, added some humor to the book. Speaking of safe words, this book was very spicy and it was well done.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was the chapter structure (briefly mentioned this earlier). The consistent rhythm between the past and present timelines was brilliantly executed. The chapters were the perfect length, long enough to be satisfying but short enough that I constantly convinced myself to read "just one more chapter.” Each chapter built upon the last, with the past providing context for the present and the present setting up revelations from the past. Everything flowed seamlessly, and you could tell a lot of thought went into how each chapter was placed. I saw review stating they thought the alternating timeline wasn’t done smoothly, I completely disagree with that opinion. I really loved the alternating timeline and POV. Again, it was brilliant.
There were two twists near the end, one I saw coming and one that caught me off guard. That's honestly my favorite combination. I love feeling smart for predicting one reveal while still being genuinely surprised by another.
Critique:
My only real critique is about the ending. After the author spent the entire book showing us the evolution of the MC’s relationship, the conclusion shifted into telling us what happened at the end, rather than letting us experience it alongside the characters. I was hoping for just a little more time showing us how the story wrapped up. This ending felt similar to Drive by Kate Stewart. We were just told the ending…

This was the prefect dark romance/magical beings I was needed in my life 🤯 I absolutely LOVED our MMC Jax, morally grey, obsessive, touch her and 💀 at the start of this he was reminding me a lot of Kade Mitchell from The Edge of Darkness but as the story went on he completely stands of his own as a new favourite MMC. I have an also do a special mention to Jax adopted St. Bernard ‘Scotch’ as I’m sucker for a big soppy dog 🐶
I loved the more atmosphere of this book and certain elements that had me picturing Vemon and Gotham City 🌃
This story is told from two POVs of Jax and Sisk and through the past and present timelines, I love when a book had multiple POVs but I sometimes felt a bit confused when jumping back and forth and found I was a little lost at times.
I felt like the ending wrapped up really nicely for me and I definitely will have a look at Blair’s other work 📖

4.5 stars Tar City is a gritty metropolis rife with misery and magic. Some say the city is cursed, while others see it as an instrument of corruption and oppression. The tar pit seething beneath the city makes promises, but demands sacrifices for what it bestows in return. Hailing from the city's founding family, Jax St. Clair's life should be a dream, but has turned into a nightmare due to one fateful night. Now, on nights with a full moon, he has no control over the monster he becomes. Sisk Zaitseva was never supposed to return to the city...or to him. Living the life of a premier ballerina couldn't fill the void, and no matter how far she ran, she could never escape a long-ago deal made with the tar. The city always gets what it wants, until Jax vows to become the villain it takes keep the tar from collecting its due.
This was such a unique read in concept and structure, and provided an overall compelling and intense story that leaned fully into all the dark romance aspects. The now and then timeline revealed a decade of mistakes, regret, yearning, and obsession in Jax and Sisk's relationship. From opposite sides of the track, their fledgling relationship was almost immediately marred by a disaster the night of their senior formal, and that one event set them on a collision course they can no longer outrun. Despite the toxic moments of their relationship, every decision is ultimately rooted in not wanting to hurt the other, and willingness to sacrifice themselves. The insatiable attraction frequently reignites their desire even though they desperately try to stay away. The book is heavy on the spice, but since it occurs at different times during the couple's relationship it doesn't feel repetitive. The characters feel true to their descriptions. Jax blurs the line between monster and man, while deeply yearning for Sisk, but continuously rejects her because he so deeply feels he will lose control and hurt her. Sisk is so beautifully broken, while simultaneously defiant and unwilling to give up. The paranormal elements coupled with the gritty portrayal of life in Tar City led to a high-tense atmosphere and unpredictable action.

I just finished Tar City, and let me tell you I went into this one completely blind. The cover had me in a chokehold, so I didn’t even read the synopsis and honestly, I’m so glad I didn’t.
This story is a story within a story, told through Then and Now dual timelines. If dual timelines aren’t your thing, this might not be the book for you. But if you love slowly piecing together a mystery while everything starts clicking into place you’re in for a ride.
From the very first pages, you’re pulled into the eerie heart of Tar City a town drowning in secrets, whispered rumors, paranormal happenings, and the kind of superstitions that make you question everything. The atmosphere was so immersive that it felt like Tar City had a personality of its own.
Now let’s talk about the romance… because WOW. The heartbreak. The yearning. The tension. The “I want you, but I can’t have you” energy. The push-and-pull between the FMC and MMC had me completely invested. And please… don’t even get me started on the nickname he gives her. I’ll never hear that word again without immediately thinking of this man.
I also loved the contrast between the two sides of Tar City. The MMC grew up on the wealthy side while the FMC came from the other. Their worlds weren’t meant to collide, but that didn’t stop him from wanting her anyway. The way this man yearned for her? Top-tier.
And yes the spice was definitely spicing. 🌶️🌶️🌶️ It added to the story without taking away from everything else that was happening.

Okay, what the hell did I just read, in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY?!?!? This was so GOOD!! So freaking unique.
I read a lot of dark romance and a lot of paranormal romance and this was such a different take on both genres! Tar Daddy, yes please!!! Jax was incredible, he was so obsessed with Sisk and loved her so much, and Sisk. Girl, you are no wallflower and I loved every moment of it. I read a lot of dark romance and a lot of paranormal romance and this was such a different take on both genres! Tar Daddy, yes please!!! Jax was incredible, he was so obsessed with Sisk and loved her so much, and Sisk. Girl, you are no wallflower and I loved every moment of it. I want to thank the author for another amazing story that has captured so many readers! I took my time reading this book because I didn’t want it to end! This world that the author has created is so different than any that I’ve read and the tar has a hold on you just like everyone else! I love the dual timeline and pov’s of both the FMC & MMC.
Jax is a complicated character with emotions that lead his everyday life and a love for Sisk that has you wishing you were her. Jax lives his life to keep Sisk safe and happy. I fell in love with him from the beginning. He’s got that bad rich boy energy with a heart of gold! Wow, wow, wow, I am obsessed. I loved it there is nothing the two main characters could do to make me not love them. I loved the tension and yearning and how the book followed two timelines made it feel like I was reading 2 different books. The characters had so much depth to each of them and their backgrounds made the story feel so alive to me. The world that the author created was so descriptive and mysterious it created a wonderful backdrop for this ultimate love story. The spice was delicious!!!!

A sentient, omniscient tar pit of magic… that can infect people and uses our MMC as an assassin to feed itself? It’s such a confusing, off the wall concept. It was also oftentimes gross and then other times I was questioning my own sanity because the grossness was sometimes hot.
You spend a third of the book literally so confused about what was going on, but I honestly loved the mystery. The dual timelines were interesting, they were laid out in a way that tied in perfectly. I did often find it frustrating that many chapters would finish on a cliffhanger and then you switch to a different timeline. I also wish the flashback chapters had years.
**SPOILER AHEAD** (But if you’re picky about your tropes, you may find it useful info)
I was not expecting the pregnancy trope. I don’t want to ruin the plot because it is a bit of a twist but if you strongly dislike that trope, I feel like you should know before diving in.
I also didn’t fully buy our couple as a couple… I felt like they ended up together through trauma bonding and sheer stubbornness. This couple built everything on a short high school relationship and then (admittedly hot) sexual tension. But the day to day interactions, the flirty banter, it just wasn’t there for me. I feel like they would “burn the world down” for each other but I don’t really know why. Because the sex is hot?
I also felt like we were gypped on the final action sequence. We get a watered down recollection? Are you kidding me? I read 600+ pages of the evil, unreasonable tar god/demon overtaking the city and our MC’s lives only to say “you’re right, the city is f*%#ed, we will leave you alone now” I don’t think so.
I did really enjoy this book, it is very very spicy and the spice is dirty. Grunge, filth, and bikers isn’t my aesthetic but it definitely worked with the setting of the book. I’d recommend this to a certain audience but it certainly wouldn’t be for everyone. I did NOT appreciate that there was a specific thing teased the entire book and then the epilogue teased it again but never appears on page. Not cool, Blair, not cool.
TLDR- If you were a Goosebumps girlie as a kid and now you like smut… this will be your jam.

I picked up this book for two reasons: it’s a romantasy… and that cover. 😍 I knew absolutely nothing about the story going in, and honestly, I think that made the experience even better.
Before Chapter 1 even started, the quote “It’s not love if you’re not losing your mind” had me hooked. I thought, Yep… this is going to be my kind of book.
Then the story opens with Rose sitting in high school detention with the popular guy and the nerd, and my immediate thought was, “Wait… am I reading The Breakfast Club?” 🤣
And don’t even get me started on this TAR PIT. I was convinced it was going to be some underground fighting ring. I don’t know why my brain went there, but it did… and I was spectacularly wrong. 😂 Instead, I got people with black fingers, glowing eyes, and hearing mysterious voices because of this tar pit, which only made me ask more questions. At that point, I had completely accepted that I had no idea where this story was going, and honestly… I was just along for the ride.
The only reason this wasn’t a 5-star read for me was the constant jumping between “Then” and “Now.” After a while, it started pulling me out of the story, and I found myself wishing the timeline had flowed a little more smoothly.
My other small disappointment was the ending. It wasn’t bad by any means—I just wanted more. After everything that happened, I was hoping for an ending that packed a bigger punch. Instead, it felt a little flat for me.
Even with those things, I had a really good time reading this. It surprised me in all the best ways, kept me guessing, and reminded me why sometimes the best reading experiences happen when you know absolutely nothing going in.

My, oh my. The absolute rollercoaster of thoughts and emotions I just went through over the last 24 hours. I was intrigued. I was scared. I was anxious. I knew the moment I saw the artwork for this book, I needed it in my hands. It is MAGNIFICENT—and the author is behind it all. True talent between her artwork and her writing. I devoured this story. Romance, paranormal, secrets, tension—I eat that up. I can’t stay away from it. The characters had a hold on me. Jax—mysterious, rough, many red flags, but somehow—he’s also a walking green flag. What he would do and does for Sisk, constantly pulled at my heart. The way he cared. The way he loved. Everything he did—was for her. Swooning over his actions and his emotions. Sisk was and is a fierce, strong woman. Not only did I love her personality, but she followed her heart. No matter how hard it was, she knew where she belonged and what made her happy. The push and pull dynamic between the two was done so incredibly well, that my own emotions were being pushed and pulled. Like my heart was on a bungee cord and it just kept getting tossed around and kept coming back. The supporting characters definitely added energy to it all and of course we can’t forget about Scotch, the St. Bernard. I love when there’s a dog in the family. This story was so unique to me and I loved the different timelines. I’ve never read anything like it and it was a nice change of pace. Then and now timelines are always interesting to me because I love seeing the development of everything. The depth the story had kept me wanting more. I wanted it to keep going, every page had me more interested and asking more questions. It’s a longer book coming in over 600 pages, but I’m glad it wasn’t split up. It flowed through beautifully. My heart is happy with how this story was written and how it ended.

ARC Review:
The way that the art for this book had me almost foaming at the mouth waiting for it is basically CRIMINAL. The author does her own art which is incredible (if you haven’t seen it yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!) If you haven’t read or listened to the short story that came before this full length novel, The Bartender’s Ballerina, PLEASE go do that! I promise you won’t regret it!
Jax is a FULL RED FLAG but I did very much enjoy it 🤭 he’s possessive, obsessed, annnd also cursed 😅 Sisk is his obsession, his and only his if you ask him 👀.
The Then and Now timeline had me ready to throw my kindle at certain points because something UNHINGED would happen then OPE different timeline for the next chapter but it truly did make sense because the way the stories were weaved was so great!
Sisk was a bada$$ and watching Jax continue to push her away but want her at the same time seriously broke my heart for her, I really enjoyed her POVs in both timelines!
The fact that the CURSED CITY, had dialogue had my heebies jeebied but it fit the vibes of the story SO incredibly well; and really leaned into the EXTREMELY UNHINGED parts of the story 👀 (81%….IYKYK)
The ending did feel like it came kind of quick after allllll the lead up but it was still a very enjoyable read!

Let's talk about this dual POV / timelines for a minute. BRILLIANT but frustrating AF on Kindle. Just when I would mentally land in the specific timeline and scene with the characters it would flop back to the other and would take me a chapter to settle in again. This made it a bit slower of a read for me. I love how this chapter style will reread when I take my second pass. But I did find myself having to check back to the chapter titles / timing a lot while reading.

I received this as an ARC and I honestly don't even have the words.
What caught my attention first was that Blair does all her own art (NOT AI, as you can see by her videos showing the making of the art) so I was immediately intrigued because the art is SO GOOD!
The story itself is such a unique take on the shadow daddies we all know and love. She raised the bar to a TAR daddy with glowing red eyes and everything! 🥵
I love the contradictions specifically regarding Sisk's character. She's an amazing ballerina which makes people think prim and proper, but she's a rebel through and through and I'm here for it.
The writing style is so smooth and seamless with the "then and now" timelines alternating so you can (and should) read it straight through the first time hit but also have the option to go back and revisit Jax and Sisk but read all the "then" first before reading all the "now"
A story about a bartender and a ballerina could have been such a snooze fest, but the way Blair did it was flawless and the addition of the tar, paranormal elements, and some other fun ✨surprises✨ made it a book that I did not want to put down. But I also didn't want it to end because that meant saying goodbye... for now 😉

Looking for your next dark romance obsession? I present to you…Tar City. The possessiveness, the tension, how she’s the only one who brings out his soft side. I ate it up! Also, I want to be best friends with Lou. The paranormal aspect with the tar pulls you further into the storyline and is a unique magic system. If you haven’t discovered author Blaire Shadows, she is ridiculously talented. She does all of her own artwork and it’s all AMAZING!! Love the story. Love the characters. Love the art. 🖤🖤🖤

July 24, 2026It started with a bartender, a ballerina, and a short story that refused to stay short. Somewhere between the opening line and page 666, Jax crawled out of my head and started making demands. Read the warning; he wrote it himself.

Ok first off wow…. When I signed up for this arc I didn’t know exactly know what to expect with this book but after seeing the gorgeous character art- made by the talented author herself- I didn’t care, I just wanted to read it lol But honestly I was pleasantly surprised, this book was dark, intense and full of mystery. I’ve read my fair share of dark and paranormal romance and this one had such a unique concept and storyline. I loved atmosphere surrounding Tar City, almost made it feel Iike it was its own character more than just the setting for this story. The characters, the magic and the mystery surrounding the tar pit that cursed the city grabbed me by the throat and made sure I was immediately invested from the very beginning. I truly didn’t know how this was going to unfold but it was fun finding out.
The story is told through a then and now timeline with dual pov. At first I wasn’t too sure how I’d like that but for this story it really worked. It had good pacing that really let the story flow so that you slowly reveal the mystery of the pit, this town and the curse without revealing it all at once. And a the same time to get to see where and how Jax and Sisk’s relationship started from the very beginning. The tension and yearning between these two was top tier 😮💨 Their chemistry was undeniable from the start, watching their story and relationship unfold from the beginning and then dealing with their struggles of the present really added some depth to the characters and their story. Was Jax and Sisk relationship toxic? At times, Yes. Did they have some childish moments of vulnerability and weakness? Yes. But these two were messy in the best way, there was no denying that they belonged together. There’s also plenty of flirty banter as well which I always appreciate especially in a more serious setting like this story, just adds to it in the best way. And yes there’s plenty of spice, but not in a way that distracts from the story.

Tar City completely hooked me from the very first chapter! It’s dark, atmospheric, mysterious, and unlike anything I’ve read before. The paranormal element surrounding the tar pit was so unique. Thank you to the author for the physical arc. 🖤
Jax was everything I want in a morally gray/villainous MMC 😏. He’s possessive, protective, completely obsessed, and willing to become the villain for the woman he loves. Also, I got total vibes of the MMC having similar powers like Venom (the movie), but that’s just me!
Sisk (FMC) was just as intriguing. She was strong, independent, and never felt overshadowed by Jax. Their chemistry was incredible, and I loved that the yearning went both ways.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the alternating from then to now timeline combined with the dual POV. Every chapter revealed another piece of the puzzle while diving deeper into the relationship between the characters. It kept me constantly saying, “Just one more chapter” at like 2am. 🤣
The mystery surrounding Tar City and the tar itself had me completely invested. This setting was so unique, as I appreciated that not every question was answered because it kept the eerie atmosphere intact, even if I was still theorizing by the end.
The only thing that caused my rating to drop from 5 to 4.5⭐️ is because it felt like the ending was a bit abrupt. I didn’t feel like I got to have the full experience of the resolution with the characters.
All I’m going to say is RUN, don’t walk, to get this book immediately!

Tar City completely hooked me from the very first chapter! It’s dark, atmospheric, mysterious, and unlike anything I’ve read before. The paranormal element surrounding the tar pit was so unique. Thank you to the author for the physical arc. 🖤
Jax was everything I want in a morally gray/villainous MMC 😏. He’s possessive, protective, completely obsessed, and willing to become the villain for the woman he loves. Also, I got total vibes of the MMC having similar powers like Venom (the movie), but that’s just me!
Sisk (FMC) was just as intriguing. She was strong, independent, and never felt overshadowed by Jax. Their chemistry was incredible, and I loved that the yearning went both ways.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the alternating from then to now timeline combined with the dual POV. Every chapter revealed another piece of the puzzle while diving deeper into the relationship between the characters. It kept me constantly saying, “Just one more chapter” at like 2am. 🤣
The mystery surrounding Tar City and the tar itself had me completely invested. This setting was so unique, as I appreciated that not every question was answered because it kept the eerie atmosphere intact, even if I was still theorizing by the end.
The only thing that caused my rating to drop from 5 to 4.5⭐️ is because it felt like the ending was a bit abrupt. I didn’t feel like I got to have the full experience of the resolution with the characters.
All I’m going to say is RUN, don’t walk, to get this book immediately!

Because somehow...It worked.
This isn't your typical paranormal romance.

Did they communicate well?

Did I spend half the book wanting to lock them in a room until they talked things out?
YES.
But here's the thing... their relationship felt earned.
Watching their story unfold through both past and present timelines made every argument, every flirt, every heartbreak, and every little moment hit so much harder.
The banter was 10/10.
The chemistry?
Absolutely ridiculous.
The tension?
Chef's kiss.
And can we normalize romances where the characters don't magically become perfect once they fall in love?
These two stayed messy.
Stayed stubborn.
Stayed completely themselves.
And somehow loved each other because of it & not despite it.

Tar City is an adventure.
From the beginning the pace is set pretty quickly and you get brought in for a ride alongside Jax & Sisk.
This is a Then/Now timeline with each chapter alternating between different POVs (Jax Now/Sisk Then, etc)
I plan on doing a 2nd reading choosing 1 path at a time as mentioned by the author and read one Timeline at a time. First readings I would just follow the book the way it's written.
There is a lot of spice in this book. A lot. It starts pretty early on. It's tied in well into the plot, it didn't seem just shoved in there, it had a purpose. Chapter 60 omg ... I'll leave it there.
Tar City gives me vibes similar to a Resident Evil game. Run down, dirty and corrupted. Mysterious and Intriguing. I imagined a dark rundown slum to be honest. Yet the city has a secret, and eyes everywhere.
There are some interesting paranormal components to the Pit. You need to read to find out!
We have Jax who is our biker boy Tar Daddy. He has God like powers, tattoos, piercings 👀 he's possessive, he yearns, he is passionate, loving and would burn the entire city down for the woman he loves. Touch Her & Die absolutely, some forced proximity as well.
Sisk is a feisty, strong willed, sharp tongued fighter. She is a ballerina with a dream and is drawn to the bad boy. She loves hard. She deals with some hard decisions and situations throughout the story.
The banter is enticing.

The found family is very cute.
Lou is one of my favorite characters! He's the bestie you can spill all the tea to and the best dance partner you'll ever find. "Worst case you end up in a ditch, and I have a great story to tell. Best case, you don't walk straight for a week" (I died lol) love love love Lou.
If you're not into the pregnancy trope, probably not for you.
If you're looking for slow burn fantasy this is not for you either. This is honestly kind of messed up and "wtf did I just read" vibes.

Okay so first off — the author has an art background and honestly you can feel it in her writing, even though the actual artwork isn't in the book itself. If you check out her social media, she shares art related to the story, and it adds such a fun extra layer to the reading experience. Her descriptions are so vivid you can almost feel the scenes.
The story is dark and messy with themes that get you invested without obvious twists.
MMC actually grows a lot throughout the book, but you can really feel how his sheltered, spoiled upbringing holds him back — like he struggles to see past his own needs and his obsession with Sisk, even as he's changing. FMC, meanwhile, is stubborn and jaded (for good reason) but loves Jax completely and accepts his darkness. Plus Scotch. Always love the dog.
My biggest gripe: the "then vs now" chapters alternate every single time, and for someone who reads in long sessions like me, it was a lot. I'd finally get sucked into one timeline and then — switch. Rinse and repeat. I think I would've felt the tension and drama so much more if each timeline got longer stretches instead of constant back and forth. I do know the author mentioned you can read it as a "dual reading experience" (all the thens, then all the nows), so that's a option if the alternating format isn't your thing either.
Also — we got teased with a 🍑💦 scene over and over and then... never actually got it?? Kind of left me hanging, a little disappointed there. Glad we got a 🪜but I wanted more.
he cliffhanger straight up caught me off guard, and then it jumps right into the epilogue with barely any breathing room. I honestly would've happily read a few more chapters just to actually see how the finale played out instead of skipping ahead.
Still a solid read overall — dark, artistic, emotional — just go in knowing the pacing/format might test your patience a little. Definitely go follow her socials for the art too

Tar City opens with three teenagers sitting in detention: Sisk, an aspiring ballerina; Jax, the handsome rich kid; and Ivan, the school’s resident nerdy outsider. If that setup immediately makes you think of The Breakfast Club, you’re not alone—but that’s where the similarities end.
The story alternates between the past and present through dual POVs from Sisk and Jax, slowly revealing both their complicated history and the unsettling mystery surrounding Tar City’s infamous tar pit. The folklore woven throughout the novel adds a creepy paranormal edge, while the present-day timeline focuses on the magnetic push-and-pull relationship between Sisk and Jax. They know they’re terrible for each other, but staying apart was never really an option.
Jax is exactly the kind of morally grey hero I love reading about. His internal struggle with both the darkness inside him and his obsessive need to protect Sisk made him a compelling character from start to finish. The paranormal elements blended surprisingly well with the romance, creating an atmosphere that felt eerie, addictive, and unique.
Blair M. Shadows’ writing kept me hooked, and I found myself completely invested in both the mystery and the romance. My only real complaint is that the ending felt a little rushed. After spending so much time building the tension and the world, I would have loved a little more time with the resolution.

That quote perfectly captures Jax’s mindset throughout the novel and why I found him such an intriguing character.

Where do I even start....this book is in my top 10 favorite reads of the year. Tar City has banter, yearning, spice, dark moments, funny moments, side characters who lighten the mood...or make it worse. It was deliciously different for the paranormal romance world and that is so refreshing. Im obsessed with this story!
The alternate timelines and swapping POVs was done so smoothly (and i dont even like then and now timelines but I loved this one). I love how they flowed and fit with each then and now timeline and the character pov swapping giving different perspectives of the timelines was so fun. No matter which timeline youre in, you get so much with these characters. The emotions, decisions, struggles and just everything with Jax and Sisk is a rollercoaster but worth the ride!
The epilogue scared me! For a sec I screamed NO!!! WHAT HAPPENED!?! Then I said oh, nevermind. That was crazy for an epilogue and I loved the "we will never talk about this again" moments. It was such an amazing way to end the book. I just have one question, but I cant ask it here or id be spoiling something just a little so ill save it for after the book is out for a little while. I was not expecting the plot twist at the end and being that there is some unfinished business in a few places, I wonder, will we be returning to Tar City?
Also, Blair drew all the artwork herself! Only one week left to pre-order, go get yours!

I really wanted to love this book. The premise hooked me right away, but it never fully clicked for me.
The atmosphere was the standout. Tar City is eerie, dangerous, and immersive, almost like a character itself. That sense of place kept me reading longer than I might have otherwise.
However, I struggled significantly with the pacing and structure. The story frequently shifts between timelines and POVs, and instead of building momentum, those transitions made it difficult for me to stay grounded in the narrative. Just as I would start to settle into a scene or connect with what was happening, the perspective would change, which disrupted the flow and made it hard to stay engaged.
Character connection was another major issue for me. I was more interested in present-day Jax than his younger self, but even then, I never felt fully invested in him. I also never connected with Sisk, which made their relationship difficult to care about. While the physical chemistry was clear, I didn’t feel the emotional depth behind it, and their push-pull dynamic started to feel repetitive rather than compelling.
The spice was a highlight, but it wasn’t enough to carry the story for me.
By the time I reached 40%, I realized I was struggling to stay engaged and wasn’t feeling motivated to pick the book back up. Between the uneven pacing, the disjointed structure, and my lack of connection to the characters, I ultimately decided to DNF.
That said, I don’t think this is a bad book. Readers who enjoy nonlinear storytelling, dark atmospheric settings, and morally gray characters may connect with it more. Tar City itself is compelling—I just wish the characters and narrative flow had drawn me in the same way.

So I just finished Tara City and OH. MY. GOSH. It is SO freaking good!!!!! I absolutely devoured all 688 pages in just 2½ days. Yep... 688 pages in 2½ days, y'all!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. It completely took over my brain, and I'm not even mad about it. This book has officially embedded itself into my thoughts, and I already know it's going to be one I think about for a long, long time.
The main characters are absolutely incredible.
Jax... whew. 🥵 💦💦He is Daddy. Broody, possessive, controlling… the walking definition of everything I love in a morally gray MMC.
Then we have Sisk, our FMC. She's sassy, fiercely independent, compassionate, and more than capable of holding her own.
Together, they are the perfect match. They're like yin and yang but flipped. When Jax is ready to burn the world down, Sisk is the one pulling him back and keeping him grounded. Then, when Sisk is the one going off the rails, Jax is the voice of reason trying to pump the brakes. Their dynamic is so balanced, and watching their relationship grow was honestly beautiful.
The storyline itself was phenomenal. It felt unlike anything I've read before, and I really appreciated how unique it was. In a genre where plots can sometimes feel familiar, Tar City stood out in the best possible way.
I cannot recommend this book enough. I'm so happy I preordered not only the paperback but the hardcover too

Some words I would use to describe this book besides WOW would be: unique, dark, sexy, intense!
Honestly, with all the dark romantasy out there, this one really stands out and is so unique. Blair Shadows lends a fresh voice and perspective to this genre. I noticed that in her Crystal Iris series as well.
Tar City is such a clever concept for a story and characters. When I listened to The Bartender’s Ballerina, I knew I needed more of Jax and Sisk. And as promised, we get a lot more of them in this book!
The characters, the magic, the tar, the cursed city setting, and the supporting characters; all add to this incredible and often toxic journey Jax and Sisk are on.
I love the dual POVs and timelines. The now and then really works to build the tension, suspense, and chemistry, and helps us to understand the MMC and FMC more.
Jax is unlike any MMC I’ve ever met. He is everything your mother told you to stay away from, but just can’t. Is he a monster? A villain? Possessive? The answer is yes, sort of, maybe, sometimes. But he will do anything to protect the woman he loves! I love him! I love Sisk too! She is a strong FMC while still being vulnerable. It’s impossible for her to forget or stay away from Jax, even when she leaves for a while, since the sweet ballerina is drawn to his darkness because she too has a dark side.
Their chemistry is out of this world and they are positively explosive together.
I did not see what was coming towards the end which I loved! And the epilogue was so good! I truly enjoyed this journey into Tar City and look forward to whatever Blair has in store for us next!

I was so excited going into this one. A morally gray biker with paranormal powers? A creepy cursed city? A ballerina x villain romance? On paper, this sounded like it was written specifically for me.
Unfortunately…this one just never came together for me.
The atmosphere was easily my favorite part. Tar City itself felt dark, eerie, and almost like a character of its own, which kept me hoping everything would eventually click into place. The spice definitely had some standout moments too.
Jax completely carried this book for me. He was the character I connected with most, and his relationship with his foster dog, Scotch, absolutely stole my heart. I have the biggest soft spot for foster dogs.
While Jax stole the show, I never felt quite as connected to Sisk, which made it harder for me to fully invest in the romance.
Where the story lost me was the structure. Every chapter alternated between the past and the present, and I found myself constantly trying to reconnect the timelines. More often than not, the flashbacks didn’t seem to add clarity to what was happening in the present, so instead of building suspense, they pulled me out of the story. I filled pages of notes trying to piece everything together but still finished feeling confused by parts of the world-building, the tar, and several character motivations.
The pacing, combined with the alternating timelines, also made the story feel much longer than it needed to for me.
I think readers looking for a high-spice paranormal romance with a morally gray MMC and who enjoy more abstract storytelling may have a very different experience than I did. Sadly, this one just wasn’t the right fit for me.

This isn’t just a dark romance, it blends paranormal suspense, mystery, and an unforgettable setting into a story that completely pulled me in. The city itself feels alive, adding an eerie atmosphere that lingers long after you finish reading. Jax quickly became one of my favorite morally gray characters. Beneath his tough exterior is a man carrying impossible burdens while doing everything he can to protect the woman he loves. His relationship with Sisk is passionate, complicated, and full of emotional depth. Their shared history made every reunion and every difficult choice feel even more meaningful.
I really enjoyed how the story unfolded through dual POVs and different timelines. Each chapter revealed another piece of the past, making it impossible not to keep turning the pages. The balance between romance, suspense, and supernatural elements kept me invested from beginning to end.
I also have to mention Scotch, who completely stole my heart. Every great story deserves an unforgettable canine companion, and Scotch brought moments of warmth that perfectly balanced the darker themes.
The world Blair M. Shadows created is imaginative, immersive, and unlike anything I’ve read before. With compelling characters, a haunting atmosphere, and a romance that stays with you, Tar City is a book I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
