What if the voice in your head wasn’t imagination—but a warning?
What if the monster wasn’t chasing you—but was you?
What if the moment that defined your life… already happened—and you missed it?
The Human Variable is a collection of dark, unsettling stories where control is an illusion, identity is fragile, and every choice carries consequences you may never see coming.
From whispered voices predicting death, to hunters who don’t realize they’re the prey, to lives unraveling one quiet moment at a time—these stories don’t just ask what happens next…
They ask what was always happening beneath the surface.
Robert Joyce is a writer of dark fiction and speculative storytelling, exploring the fragile boundary between perception and reality. Drawing on his academic background in anthropology, his work examines how culture, belief systems, and internal psychology shape the way people experience the world—and themselves.
His debut collection, The Human Variable, brings together stories that range from dark humor to psychological unease, often placing ordinary individuals in situations where control slips and deeper truths emerge. Whether through institutional paranoia, moral unraveling, or existential reflection, his stories focus less on what happens—and more on what it means.
Outside of writing, Robert is a substitute teacher and YouTube content creator, where he analyzes music and audience behavior across a growing platform. He lives in Fullerton, California, where he continues to develop new stories and longer-form fiction, including a speculative novel exploring the societal impact of artificial intelligence.
