Fabric of Love #2
A Breach in Brocade
To look at Miss Lily Preston, one would never guess that she’d once been hunted like a criminal by her employer across the wilds of Northumberland. In her defense, lying about one’s identity was only a little crime, at most. Lord Hayes had most certainly overreacted.
Surely he was over it by now, but even if he wasn’t, there was no way he could ever find her. The Miss Sarah Hughes who had been a governess for his daughter was gone, replaced by the cultured, pampered Miss Lily Preston.
But if her secret past was all behind her, why did she feel so out of place in London? And why did she miss that isolated northern estate--and its inhabitants--so dearly?

Have you ever read a romance where the hero and heroine are living in two completely different stories? That perfectly describes A Breach in Brocade, and I had the best time reading it!
Lily Preston is carrying a dangerous secret. After assuming another identity to help her family through difficult circumstances, she believes discovery would ruin everything she has worked to protect. When she leaves her position unexpectedly, she’s convinced her former employer, Lord Hayes, has uncovered the truth.
The problem? Lord Hayes has an entirely different reason for wanting to find her.
Watching these two misunderstand each other had me smiling from beginning to end. Every conversation, every encounter, and every thoughtful gesture is filtered through Lily’s fears, while Lord Hayes never quite understands why she keeps misreading his intentions. The result is a romance full of humor, heart, and wonderfully awkward moments that kept me eagerly turning pages.
Lord Hayes quickly became one of my favorite heroes. He’s quiet, steady, protective, and genuinely kind. Rather than relying on grand speeches, he consistently demonstrates his character through his actions, making him impossible not to love.
Jill M. Beene also fills the story with an engaging cast of secondary characters who add warmth, humor, and plenty of personality. One character in particular completely stole every scene she appeared in, and I’m already hoping she becomes the focus of a future book!
This was exactly the kind of Regency romance I enjoy: charming, witty, clean, full of lovable characters, and impossible to put down. I found myself grinning throughout the story and finished it wishing I could immediately start the next book in the series.
If you enjoy clean historical romance with mistaken identities, endearing misunderstandings, memorable characters, and a hero you’ll be cheering for from the very beginning, I highly recommend A Breach in Brocade.

I love this author for her kindness. The problem I had this time was a lack of tension. The romantic doubts continued non stop but at a certain point it felt like a foregone conclusion. I think it would have helped to weave the story of his wife’s death earlier in the book. Leaving it all to the end diminished the hero’s conflict for the reader and left me feeling confused.

Loved it! This is probably my favorite of the ‘Love from London’/‘Fabric of Love’ series. I was intrigued by the setup of Lilly’s story and have been eagerly awaiting its release. Now, on the day of said release, I can happily report that it’s everything I hoped for.
Lily is kind, beautiful, and the ex-governess of Lord Hayes’ daughter. We saw their interactions from a distance in the last book (the timeline overlaps with LfL5 and FoL1) and it was clear something was going on. Here we discover the story, how she assumed a fake identity to earn money as a governess, later received word of her brother’s return and fortune, and then had to flee from her less-than-thrilled employer… who tracks her to London.
I loved the plot and loved the characters (the MCs, as well as Beatrice, Rachel, and Margaret). The writing is thoroughly engaging and I found myself glued to the page. The ending conflict might have felt a touch unnatural/forced (I think it would have helped if the reader was given the details of his past before instead of after), but it didn’t dim my enjoyment of the book.
I would recommend reading LfL5 and FoL1 prior to this one. Too much is left out and brushed over to make this a standalone. Without the context and character development of the earlier books, I don’t think I would have enjoyed this one nearly as much.
Content:
There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no mention of faith or God.

Lily and Bradford
This read like a first draft. Like, it was getting structure down on paper, but needed to be completely rewritten to reconcile inconsistencies and keep it on track as a romance.
By halfway in, I was having a hard time with the story. In particular, reconciling the stern employer who never smiled with the “new” Hayes who is suddenly smiling and laughing all the time…while simultaneously demanding justice and restitution. I also didn’t see how in private, he was like, “she’ll never have me for more reasons than one”, while in person, he won’t even admit to her that he wants to court her, and instead continues to be coercive towards her, leveraging the power he has to ruin her and her sisters, and acting like all he's concerned about is "justice".
The way he admits to himself that her offense was minor and did them no injury, but in person, insists she “owes” him her time, company, and indefinite number of answers, etc. just felt manipulative in an unhealthy, dishonest way. I don’t care if he knows how she takes her tea or her favorite flavor of scone. She felt anxious, trapped, and threatened.
Which brings me to the FMC…she had to flee through the night under threat of the magistrate. Even sees him literally tracking her with hounds. (Nothing says true love like a man chasing a woman trying to escape him with hounds!) But somehow she doesn’t think, “Hayes is not who I thought he was”, and reconsider her feelings for him. Instead, she keeps carrying a torch for him. Even as he ambushes her in public, leverages the “dirt” he has on her to gain access to her home, etc. even as she worries and fears….a part of her is still like, “he’s so handsome.” Blah, blah, blah. Like, wouldn’t that kill any attraction or finer feelings?
It was just so uncomfortable. It was hard to keep reading.
But I soldiered on, and...things didn't get better. Just as Lily is about to confess her feelings, he suddenly has a crisis of conscience...well that, and fear of rejection because there are other secrets that have been alluded to, but not yet broached, which he fears Lily won't except. So then he abandons her... And I just had no patience for that.
Like, the brother literally spelled out early on that Bradford was "blackmailing" Lily for her time and attention....so why was it later written like this 11th hour lightbulb moment? Like, "he was in denial because of his feelings" is just a weak-ass cop out.
And for the FMC to allow him to treat her like this the whole book and not reconsider the relationship? While she has some duds for suitors, others are perfectly fine, and I found myself wishing she'd have given a few of them a sporting chance. Seemed more like Stockholm syndrome than love.
This just didn't work as a romance. Just too many inconsistencies, and over all, a story that went off the rails of its initial premise and ended up being a little too close to "possessive, coercive stalker gets the girl" to really be a romance. Shame, because book 1 was okay, and the premise of this one seemed like the story might be better. Not the case.

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Title: A Breach in Brocade
Series: Fabric of Love, Book 2
Author: Jill M. Beene
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📝 My Thoughts: Polite, Patient, and Precious
What an absolute whirlwind of a Regency escape, though it definitely takes its time to build! We follow Lily, a noble lady hiding as a humble governess under a fake name to secretly rescue her family from crushing debts. But when her brother returns from India filthy rich, she has to make a midnight run to avoid a total scandal! 🤫 Close behind is the brooding Lord Hayes and a pack of tracking hounds. While the setup is fantastic, the pacing did feel a bit slow for me in certain stretches, drawing out the tension rather than rushing through the plot. Still, the underlying mystery and emotional stakes kept me turning the pages! 📖✨
💖 Why I Loved It:
I simply loved William's story with Dahlia Book 5 in the Love from London series, and reading this gave me a much better understanding of all the Preston sisters' backgrounds! Getting Claire’s story in Fabric of Love Book 1 also added so much to the overarching family dynamic. I admit I was eagerly anticipating Lily and Margaret’s perspective, and now I am incredibly curious for Rachel’s story in Book 6 of the Love from London series! Jill M. Beene writes the most wonderfully tight-knit, witty sister relationships. 👭✨
🔖 Favorite Quote:
"The letter was delayed,” a voice said from behind her.”
📌 Final Verdict:
A beautifully clean, clever, and readable historical romance with the perfect dash of survival stakes and lingering longing. If you don't mind a slower, more deliberate burn and love protective heroes and massive family sagas, you need to add this series to your bookshelf! 🛒📖

This is another delightful story by Jill Beene. I don't really understand why this is in a separate category, because these stories are a continuation of MISS WARRINGTON'S PORTFOLIO FOR DESIGNING A BETROTHAL (see below).
While the Preston family was in dire straits, Lily secured a position in faraway Northumberland as a governess (under the assumed name Sarah Hughes). After four months, their brother William returned and set things to rights. Lily was called home. When she told her employer, Lord Bradford Hayes, he told her she couldn't leave! Lily left anyway, and Lord Hayes spent months finding her.
As Lily was to begin the Season (with her four sisters), Lord Hayes appeared before Lily. He promised not to betray her secret (that she was a governess, which would ruin all the girls' chances at a good match). However, he did not leave and showed up daily when the Preston ladies were at home to suitors.
Bradford says he has come to see who Lily really is; it takes most of the story to reveal why this is so important to him. This is another delightful story. Please note the release dates for the remaining stories in this series below. Overall score = 4.5 stars.

I LOVE BRADFORD!
“What a wasted opportunity, he suddenly thought. He’d had her at his table, under his roof, and hadn’t done anything right to keep her there.”
I really enjoyed this book! I love the relationship between Lily and Bradford. Beene did a wonderful job of focusing on their relationship after the governess situation. I’ve loved the small glimpses we got into seeing what their “working relationship” was like. But I loved watching their relationship grow afterwards more.
Bradford is literally one of my favorite male main characters. The fact that he notices the small details (like she’s nervous in crowds) was just so good. I loved that he knew her better than her own family (even though her family also knew and loved her well).
I enjoyed Lily too. I thought she would be a little more “airhead” like. But she was nothing like that at all. I thought she was very down to earth and smart. She noticed the small things about people. And I think that was something that tied her and Bradford together.
I loved this one. I was hooked into the storyline really quickly. About halfway through I was curious to see how the author would up the intrigue again. And I was quickly reeled back into the story. I loved it.
I also loved the conversations between the different young ladies. There were many times that I was laughing out loud. The wittiness and quick lines were delightful. The “hah hah hah”s TOOK ME OUT. Iykyk.
Content: Kisses only, no swearing

It was fine. 2 or 3 stars. Mostly forgettable but I enjoyed it while I was reading it. I liked the start with their relationship out in a rural or more wilderness type area, then moving to the city. The main characters were sweet in their own way. I found this author's style decently readable and her dialogue was decent.
I think it's interesting how this series tells many concurrent stories in different books (all books happening simultaneously and you see the events from different points of view). I've never read a series like that before and find the idea interesting, though it also creates some issues (like having to provide some of the same exposition in each book). This was the first one I read of the series and I'm interested to check out another one.

Wow
A truly delightful book and story. I throughly enjoyed every page. In this and in the first volume about Tweed. So cute and funny 😁 banter. This book is a good follow up and I am so anxious to read the next book in the series. Truly delightful characters and I loved the wedding actually taking place. I had expected Claire to be married at the end of this as well as Lilly. I highly recommend this author and series.

Beauty and the Beast
Well written. Humorous. Every main character, all the four sisters, were so different. Each with her own peculiar character. All charmingly different. I’m glad there was a well endowed female.
Shocking for those times, where slim and waif like was the norm. The minor characters, suitors were very well sketched out.
But was it really the author who was talking about religion. That was odd.

Excellent
I liked lily's book more than Claire's but this series is certainly fun. I like a good clean historical romance and seeing all the sisters get their HEA after being neglected so badly by their elder brother is very enjoyable. I do wish William paid a bit more attention though so that the books might over lap a bit better.

Delightful
I love that this author spends TIME- her characters get to know each other, they spend more than just a few weeks being twiterpated. This also means I get to spend more time with them, as well. I’ve loved all the books in this series, and can’t wait to read about Margaret and the Scottish Duke!

I love this series so far, and I can’t wait for the other books to be released. This one was unique in the fact that I laughed out loud several times, one of them to the point of crying, which is highly unusual for me with novels. It isn’t just the main characters who are delightful. The entire family is interesting and adorable

Another fun one!
Another enjoyable book by Jill M. Beene! Over too quickly, but thankfully she is a quick and prolific writer. I won’t have to wait too long for the next instalment of the many sisters and friends in London.

I really liked this book. I liked how Lily and Bradford came to know each other. The drawing room conversations were full of humor. The sisterly support was so kind and effective. I’m looking forward to their stories.

A ghost of Jane Eyre with regency humor
Oh, I did like this story. I enjoyed it far more than the gothic classic. Not stuffed shirts in this story.
The sisters' banter was very amusing.

Wasn’t sure if I’d like this storyline but I actually quite enjoyed it! There was still lots of tension all the way up to the end! Can’t wait for book 3!

Captivating!
Bradford and Lily’s romance is enthralling. Lily is beautiful but kind. Bradford is an older grump. There is angst, chuckles, mystery and love.

wonderful read
This story was witty and filled with a true sense of love. It’s delightfully different from the ordinary historical romances.
