Rowan “Rook” Kincaid is captain of the Northgate Wolves, the kind of player who keeps his emotions locked down and his focus on the ice. He has to. Because the one person who ever got past his defenses disappeared thirteen years ago without a word—and Rowan has never really recovered.

Soren Vale was his best friend, his almost-everything, and the boy who left him behind.

Now Soren is back in Toronto, drumming for a rock band, covered in ink, carrying more scars than Rowan knows what to do with, and still capable of wrecking him with a single look. Seeing him again should bring closure.

Instead, it brings back everything.

Because the chemistry is still there.
The history is still there.
And the love Rowan tried to bury never actually died.

But Soren’s return comes with painful truths, old wounds, and the kind of damage that doesn’t disappear just because someone comes home. If Rowan wants a future with the man he never forgot, he’ll have to decide whether love is enough to survive the weight of the past.

Breakaway Beat is a second-chance MM romance packed with angst, yearning, heat, hurt/comfort, healing, and a hard-earned HEA.

This can be read as a Standalone.

Emotional, Achy, and Packed with Years of Unfinished Love

Breakaway Beat by Riley Keane absolutely delivered on the second-chance angst and emotional yearning. Rowan “Rook” Kincaid and Soren Vale had the kind of relationship that feels unfinished from the very first page — the sort of love that never truly died no matter how much time, distance, or hurt tried to bury it.

What really worked for me was the emotional tension between them. Thirteen years of silence hangs over every interaction, and Riley Keane leaned HARD into that longing, resentment, grief, and lingering devotion in a way that kept me completely invested. Every glance, every conversation, every moment they were forced back into each other’s orbit felt loaded with history.

Rowan completely broke my heart in that quiet, controlled way. He’s spent years locking everything down emotionally, trying to survive around the absence Soren left behind, and seeing all of those carefully built walls start cracking the second Soren comes back? Brutal in the best way.

And Soren… wow. There’s something so emotionally raw about him. The rockstar image, the tattoos, the scars, the weight he’s carrying underneath all of it — he felt messy and human in a way that made the reconciliation hit even harder. You can feel how much these two loved each other long before either of them fully says it out loud again.

The hurt/comfort in this book was honestly top tier too. Riley Keane balanced the emotional heaviness with tenderness really well, especially once Rowan and Soren finally stopped dancing around their feelings and started confronting the pain they’d both been carrying for years.

I also loved the atmosphere of the story overall. The hockey world mixed with the music scene gave the romance this emotional, cinematic vibe that fit Rowan and Soren perfectly. It felt moody, intimate, and deeply nostalgic in the best way.

If you love second-chance MM romance, childhood best friends, years-long yearning, emotionally guarded MMCs, hurt/comfort, and love stories built around healing old wounds, this one absolutely hits.

I received a copy of this book for my honest review.

4.75⭐️

This is the second book in the Playmaker series and it follows Rowan “Rook” Kincaid, Captain of the Northgate Wolves hockey team, and Soren Vale, drummer of local band.

The men we high school friends and teammates till graduation when Soren disappeared and Rook was forced to move on not knowing where his friend went or why he left with no notice.

This book is heavy with life themes. Rook lives the life he was destined for but it hasn’t always been easy and safe, but he never stopped looking for his friend.

Soren has lived a disaster of the past 13 years of life and is barely hanging on, taking care of his siblings, and coping with unhealthy habits.

The men come back together and tentatively try to reconnect as friends but they are so different. Soren is openly gay and has loved Rook since before he left, Rook is trying to understand why Soren light him up inside and is wondering if these are things he felt all along.

The way the story weaves the traumatic past, the family struggles, mental health struggles (WARNING-there is a failed suicide attempt), Soren’s inability to ask or allow for help, and Rook’s bisexual awakening, fear of loss of control, and yearning for his friend is beautiful. Because they’ve missed out on 13 years of each others lives, there are things that are revealed throughout the book at a great pace for impact and discovery.

I will say that some of the sex scenes seemed to go on for a while, and though they are well written, I found myself skimming just a little to get back to the story. Also they say each others names a lot.

I really love the kinks in this book which include boys in lingerie, light BDSM, voyeurism, and exhibitionism, and light dom/sub.

There is a pivotal hockey game that is a bit gratuitous to the story but I enjoyed it the was it played out anyway.

The supporting characters, Soren’s family and band, and Rooks parents and team, are perfectly sprinkled in and realistically supportive.

I loved this book just like I loved the first one. It can be read as a standalone but Penalty Shot is just as good and worth the read.

Breakaway Beat was absolute perfection and mind blowing incredible 🤯 This story shook me (in the best way), made me cry and forced me to stop reading to pick my jaw up off the floor multiple times 😅🥹🔥 I devoured this book and stayed up past my bedtime 2 nights in a row as I just could not put it down!

This is the 2nd book in the series following team caption Rowan (Rook) Kincaid and his childhood best friend Soren Vale, a tattooed drummer from a local band. The two were separated just after high school graduation when Soren disappears leaving Rook with so many questions and a broken heart. After 13 years of searching for Soren, they are finally reunited and the complicated truth behind Soren's disappearance is revealed.

There are themes in this book are extremely heavy yet written so beautifully by Riley. Soren is dealing with so much from his past, raising his 3 siblings and dealing with their unhinged parents. He struggles with a deep depression and suicidal idealization (there is also a heartbreaking attempt in the story) and Rowen is all in to help and support Soren towards stability.

They learn that the friendship goes so much deeper then just friends as they both held romantic feelings for one another and the story is also of them navigating this love for one another.

The spice oooooh the spice of this book 🔥🥵 Chapter 27 🔥 ... I'm lost for words (again in the best way 😉)

The supporting characters of the story were absolutely amazing! The hockey team, Soren’s siblings, the band mates, Rook's parents and Jamie, a sweet deaf boy who Soren is a drum teacher for, are all such a beautiful found family full of love and support for these two ❤️

There were also some great LOL moments throughout the book - I don't think I will ever look at ducks the same way again 😅

This is an amazing story full of love, anguish, pain, healing, and beating the odds. Rook and Soren will forever hold a special place in my heart and I keep finding myself thinking about them and where they are now 🥹🥰

Riley Keane is such a talented writer and I will now forever be a fan! I am so grateful for the opportunity to have read Breakaway Beat as an ARC.

Thank you Riley Keane for trusting me with an Arc copy of this book

Well, this book! After reading Penalty Shot I was really looking forward to the next in the series and Breakaway Beat did not disappoint, at all, no sir!

This time we follow the Captain of the team Rook and his long lost best friend Soren.
Now this book has all sorts of content warning so please make sure you read them. The book is full of angst, pining and yearning, but it is also such a beautiful love story. My heart broke for both Rook and Soren at times and then thankfully was knitted back together again. Both couples needed to soul search and understand themselves to allow them to have a healthy relationship and this was portrayed beautifully, Rook coming to terms with his not straightness and Soren understanding that he has people to help and rely on and that alcohol and self harm is not the answer for his messed up childhood.
The sensitivity in which Riley Keane deals with self harm with one MC and also prior DV towards the other and her portrayal of Sorens parents and the struggle Sorens dad has trying to do the right thing for the right reasons is commendable.
I also very much liked the introduction of a deaf character, the explanation of teaching him drums is wonderful and you felt the excitement and enjoyment of the characters - can't wait to read more on this in other books - pretty please :-)
Overall this book was emotional but so well written and such a hard fought love story. As others have mentioned there is a particularly hot chapter to spice up your lives but I really enjoyed the scene in the hospital where Soren was finally able to believe that Rook was in it for the long haul and not going to give up on him and Rook realised he was nothing without Soren and would do anything for him.
There is so much going on and the story just builds and builds, and at no stage do you feel it is too much, it just is and it is perfect in my eyes.
Congratulations on another fantastic book Riley Keane

"Breakaway Beat" by Riley Keane is a hockey player / drummer M/M romance that features reconnections, mental health representation, bi-sexual awakening, and learning that the people in our lives are truly our village.

The story follows Rowan "Rook", the captain of a professional hockey team as he discovers his long lost friend is the drummer of a local band.

Once they reconnect, they start a beautiful journey of friendship, family, love, and bettering yourself for yourself.

Ratings:
Overall: 5/5 hearts - This book is beautiful. There are scenes in this book that had me reaching out to Riley Keane and just gushing like a lunatic. I absolutely loved this book.

Peppers: 5/5 - This book isn't quite as filthy as the first book. But it's just as spicy. Once the sex starts, it never stops and I freaking love that.

Spice: 5/5 - It's so good. Not only is it hot, but also emotional and story driven. And that window scene???? 🔥

Plot: 5/5
- Storyline: The storyline is unique (for me at least). The idea of long time best friends finding each other again and reconnecting as adults, and realizing their friendship is so much deeper than they expected. *chef's kiss*. There's also the additional elements of addiction and learning to lean on those you love.

- Characters: THEY'RE SO GOOD. The way Keane manages to toss in these little tidbits throughout the story, never info dumping, or making the characters feel like a "profile", is just perfection. Both MCs are flawed, but loveable, and I adored watching them grow throughout the story and really earning their HEA.

- Writing: UGH THE WRITING!!! It's great. Artistic and smart and gorgeous. No notes. It's amazing.

This is an ARC review.

As I have already read Penalty Shot by Riley Keane I was aware of the character Rook. He was an absolute stand out as a side character in the first book and I was pleased he was receiving his own story.

I can already see the growth in Riley Keane as an author between Penalty Shot and Breakaway Beat. Breakaway Beat flows better and I found I could connect with Rook & Soren from the start.

The first scene that left impact for me was on the hood of Soren's car chasing shooting stars. Such a special activity to share together. Lots of underlying emotions neither were communicating.

I enjoy the family dynamics each man has. Both very different but seem to be equally supportive. I also like that they are 31. That's a relatable age. I'd much prefer to read about people in their 30s going through real issues. Soren having tried a few different careers to make ends meet.

Love the hard of hearing & disability representation. We need more of that in literature. Especially the signing and that other characters have made the effort to learn.

The substance abuse and abuse both men have endured has been written well and believable. We often don't acknowledge in society that men can be in domestic violence relationships. Especially a big bulky over 6ft male. I think it's fantastic that Riley Keane highlighted what abuse can look like on them.

Chapter 27 was easily one of the absolute hotest scenes I've ever read in a book. Powahhh. Amazing. The lace, the collar, the window... everything! 🥵🥵

Well paced, written and put together. Was very pleased to see Jace & Grant again.

Make sure you check your triggers as this one was very heavy at times.

Rowan “Rook” Kincaid has spent thirteen years looking for the best friend who disappeared without a word after high school. He had begun to think the worst, but he never imagined he would find Soren in a band. Tattooed and edgy, Soren dons his drumsticks like war paint and uses rhythm like body armor. Underneath, Soren is hiding all his broken pieces, but now that Rook has found him, he's not letting Soren go. As they get to know each other again, Rook can't deny the heat growing between them, and when they finally come together, it's everything Rook ever wanted. But the past has a way of sneaking up on them, and both Rook and Soren are left reeling from their own personal traumas, threatening to burn down everything they'd been building together. Rook thought he lost Soren once, and he's vowed to never make that mistake again. Even if it means soothing Soren's tattered edges and weathering the storm together, Rook will do anything to keep him. Fixing what's broken won't be easy, but together they can conquer anything.

I couldn’t put this book down! The first chapter grabs you immediately, and I loved Rook and Soren from the very first page. I loved Soren. He went through so much and yet still managed to take care of his siblings and basically become a rockstar. I loved how he managed to be confident but also vulnerable. And he was stubborn but also knew when to stop fighting. I appreciated his struggles and that he was a survivor. And Soren was just a really good person. I liked his lessons with Jamie and how he had learned sign language before. Soren was just a really good character, soft behind his rough exterior. I also really loved Rook. His love for Soren was obvious from the beginning and how he never stopped looking for him. And he never gave up on Soren, either. He was always looking out for Soren and showing up and being there the way Soren always needed him to but would never have asked for. I loved that they had loved each other since they were kids and that the love had never really dimmed, just changed. I loved that Rook’s freak out wasn’t about being gay. He was all in when it came to Soren, it was just hard to get over his past, something Soren could relate to, in a way. I just loved them together so much!

Riley is an incredible writer. Their prose is really stunning, and I love all of the imagery, similes, and metaphors sprinkled throughout the book. It’s definitely what keeps me coming back! The humor in this book was also incredible. I loved Rook’s parents and Soren’s siblings. I loved how Grant and Jace were both supportive and totally razzed on Rook at every turn. It kept me laughing and gave me lots of feels!

My criticisms are few. I didn’t like that Soren misinterpreted Rook’s pulling away and that Rook didn’t correct him. It was obviously not about Soren being messy or anything like that, and Rook just let him believe it was about that. That didn’t make sense. And while the spice was hot, and I liked the lingerie, I felt like the gift was a little insensitive and untimely after what happened to Soren. And it seemed uncharacteristically insensitive on Rook’s part. While Soren didn’t have a problem with it, I thought it was a bit much. And I’m not kink shaming by any means, but Soren’s use of the lingerie didn’t really make sense to me. There was no real explanation for why he started wearing it or anything like that. And while I guess that’s not exactly necessary, I just felt like it didn’t necessarily make sense for his character. I don’t know. I wasn’t not a fan, but it didn’t make sense.

Despite those criticisms, the writing was just so good that I can look past it. The spice was incredibly hot in this book. That last scene? Whew, I needed a fan! I enjoyed these characters and their story, and I am hoping that there might be another in this series! Overall I give this one 4.5/5 🌟!

"I'd rather be a disaster with you than have it together without you."
Oh this book!!  Rook and Soren captured my heart from the very beginning.  Rowan "Rook" Kincaid and Soren Vale were best friends, essentially each other's ride or die, played hockey together and spent pretty much all their time together.
The day after graduation Soren disappears without so much as a goodbye, not only confusing Rook, but leaving so many unanswered questions as to why he disappeared.  It took 13-years for Rook to find him and when they finally reunite oh the sparks that fly.
Rook is now fulfilling what he was destined to do which is playing hockey, trying to live the best life possible, has supportive parents and teammates - but still manages to keep people at respectful distance and never has relationships that last more than a few months, at best.
Soren - oh Soren he has my heart.  He is doing everything possible to stay afloat while taking care of his brother and sisters - currently a drummer for an up and coming band and doing odd jobs to survive while fighting his inner demons.
When Rook unexpectedly walks back into Soren's life - he is not letting him go.  This book is all about second chances, not only at friendship, but forever love.  I cannot say enough good things about.  The way Rook and Soren support each other with Soren's mental health, his siblings and checking in with each other is so beautifully written.

Another treat from Riley Keane! I loved this book and my god, chapter 27 was FIIIIRE! NEED MORE PLEASE! This gorgeous MM romance about a hockey captain, Rook to who never gave up looking for his best friend who left without a word. The prologue was a lovely way to show the friendship between 2 boys, their strong friendship and a love for hockey. When Soren disappears with his family, Rook is left wondering what happened and if he's okay. It starts 13 years later and it's a journey of forgiveness, trust, trauma and vulnerability. They have to go through the whole process of reconnecting and seeing if they can be friends again. It's a stunning second chance MM romance with a few darker themes throughout so, take the time to read the trigger warnings beforehand. Mental health is a huge part of this story and honestly, I believe that's why I connected so quickly to this book, it struck something inside me and definitely made me think. The ending was satisfying and I can't wait for more from the author. I'm hoping it's my boy, Finn next! He's such a beautiful side character! And I do have to say, Soren is the most perfectly imperfect character, he deserved soo much more. Anyway, thank you for giving me the opportunity to read your book early!

Home. This is the first concept that comes to my mind after finishing Breakaway Beat. The sense that even from a young age home is associated with a person, not a place. That losing our home, even by our own decision is sometimes the most devastating loss a person can feel. "He was always the first place my mind went..." If that doesn't set us up for a heartbreaking story, I'm not sure what does.

Before I even opened Breakaway Beat I had high hopes and expectations based on my love for Penalty Shot. I was not disappointed! Riley gives us the angst, the passion, and an entirely different level of hurt, heart break and healing in Breakaway Beat.

Rook and Soren took me on a messy, gut wrenching ride that had my emotions all over the place: frustration, sadness, grief, and love. There were moments of light and laughter, and who can forget the murder ducks! I promise you'll understand when you read it! Through the emotions and tears I found that I fell into the story, and the pages kept turning. I needed to know what was going to happen next. The pacing feels real, it isn't a straight forward happy ending (although there is one). Rook and Soren both make mistakes, they're human, which makes them real and relatable.

While Breakaway Beat is book two in the series, it can be read as a standalone. It does contain spoilers for book one- you've been warned. If this is your second Riley book, or your first- you'll love it! It was truly a privilege to be gifted an ARC- thank you, Riley for continuing to create messy men that are relatable and show us happy endings are possible.

Thank you to Riley for the ARC opportunity.

After reading Penalty Shot, I am obsessed with this universe and the hockey family Keane has created. So when I found out we were getting Rook's (the captain's) story, I knew I needed to give Breakaway Beat a read. Needless to say, Keane did not disappoint with this installment. A delicious slow burn where longtime friends reconnect after an abrupt situation, Breakaway Beat follows Rook and Soren's love story.

For me, I love the lead-up to Rook and Soren both confessing and acting on their feelings. Riley crafted the slow burn so well that not only is their chemistry palpable, but once the fuse is lit, it's an inferno. Also, nothing can prepare you for the heat that is chapter twenty-seven.

Other enjoyable characters and moments include Finn and drum lessons with Jamie. The inclusion of ASL is such a heartwarming touch, and I think Riley gave us just enough to hope that Finn's story is next. You'll also reconnect with familiar faces, including Jace and Coach Grant. Again, a testament to this found family, hockey goodness that Riley has crafted.

Overall, another great installment in the series with lovable characters, off-the-charts heat, and plenty of angst.

*ARC Review*

This book touches heavy topics like abuse, addiction, depression and self harm. But has a really well-written family and team dynamics just like the first book.
Rook was a really good captain, a lovable, precious side character in Penalty Shot and this book makes you love him more.

The first time Rook saw Soren on stage, after 13 years... The moment Soren walked on the stage, the whole time the band played, I felt everything Rook felt. It hit hard. Then their reunion under the stars omg it was heartbreaking, such a special and beautiful scene.

Soren's story broke my heart. What a sad thing for a teenager to go through, to give up on his dreams and future and his love. And to be a parent figure for 13 years. And then the topic of males enduring abuse, the traumas... The emotional parts are really well written. 🖤

Riley Keane writes long, intense and very detailed spicy chapters. Rook having a long chapter of jerk-off session, 2 back to back chapters of our MCs having sex the first time and then OMG the window scene... Sooooo hot!!! I loved it so much!!! 🔥🔥🔥

And there's this funny part Rook and Soren being attacked by ducks!! Twice lmao!

All in all, it's really good. The writing is better than the first book.

This was such a heartfelt journey of a love story. A second chance romance that is 13 years in the making.

Rowan, a.k.a. Rook, has been searching for this friend, Soren, who mysteriously disappeared the day they graduated high school. Fast forward 13 years later, he finds Soren as a drummer for a band called Neon Veins. Rook is desperate to know why his best friend left without a word, and why he was never able to forget about his friend after all this time.

This story deals with trauma, mental health, sacrifices, and the strong bond of (blood and found) family. So much happens between Soren and Rook that made my heart ache and my eyes water. I had quite the emotional whiplash between the smutty scenes and the absolutely devastating moments. Don't worry, I promise it is all very worth it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a lot of heart ache and quite a bit of spice that is all consuming..... or if you just love a great read.

Thank you so much Riley Keane for the ARC!💕

‼️‼️Please, please, please read the trigger warnings for this book. There are dark themes that may be sensitive for some readers.‼️‼️

Riley did an amazing job writing this book. Everything flowed so smoothly and effortlessly. I loved book 1 but book 2??? I absolutely devoured it. It was 🤌🏼💋 chef’s kiss.

I loved both MMCs. Hearing what Soren went through and how much he struggled was absolutely heartbreaking 😭. I just wanted to wrap him in a blanket with some hot cocoa and hug the daylights out of him.

Rook, our other MC, was so understanding and loving. He had his own things to work through, but he was incredibly supportive. I loved their relationship, how it came together, and how they truly supported one another. Definitely add this to your TBR! 📚👀

Also… chapter 27??? Good LORD🔥🥵🥵

The journey these two took for their HEA was heartbreaking and rough.

I really loved Soren and Rook. They have both been through it, I'm talking horrible things that will break your heart. I wanted to wrap both of them up in a hug and give them all the love they deserved.

The support, gah, it was phenomenal. The love and understanding can be felt through the pages.

Riley did such a great job with balancing those sweet and spicy moments. Chapter 27, whew 🔥

The characters Riley creates are just so wonderful! Rook's mom and dad are my new favorites! Their banter was just so hilarious.

Soren and Rook's relationship is so sweet and warm. I loved that they found their way to each other.

I did find that the first half of the book held my attention slightly more than the second. The last parts just felt a little bit over-full, like there was just a lot going on and not quite enough pages left to finish them all up fully without rushing.

Overall, though, it was an enjoyable read with a very sweet happy ending!

Rook and Soren's history carries so much weight that I felt every moment of their reconnection. This isn't a light, fluffy romance. It's about depression, family trauma, addiction, and the weight of raising siblings when you're barely an adult yourself. Riley handles these themes with care and honesty.Yes, you'll cry. Yes, the spice is excellent and emotionally grounded. Just check the content warnings first—this one goes to dark places before it finds the light.

Definitely a slow burn but the boys really made my heart break especially with Soren. He was saddled with so much at such a young age and I just want to smack his parents. Though we see more into the situation as we go and it was just sad how things became to be. I am glad to see Soren finally getting a chance to breathe as Rook helps him take care of his family. Beautiful story.

I can no longer deny the chokehold Riley Keane has me in. If I thought Penalty Shot was an unquestionable 5 stars, then we need to invent a new rating system because Breakaway Beat surpassed that!

The second chance story of Rook and Soren, who reconnect after Soren’s disappearance 12 years prior, was spectacular. Full of desperate emotion, some devastating moments, and steamy scenes that were equal parts decadent and erotic.

I’m hooked on whatever this author does next because the two books in this Playmaker series have delighted me.

You feel so much for Soren in everything he has had to deal with in his life alone, only to realize that the one person he needs is the one he left.
