The Last Eternal #11

On Stones Stained Red

Warriors were made to war.
Old words—but true ones.

As Tactician’s army marches on Celes and the siege begins in earnest, the Wanderer and those beside him are tested as never before.

On stones stained red with the blood of friends and foes, the people of Celes band together to fight—not for glory or riches but for their homes…for their lives.

But the greatest threat does not come from beyond the walls.

It waits within.

Traitors skulk through hidden paths, opening doors that should never be opened—servants not of the city, but of death itself.

For a hundred years, the Wanderer has defied death.
For a hundred years, he has held it at bay.

But death is patient.

And this time…it has found its way in.

Warriors were made to war—and none more so than the wanderer, the last of the legendary Eternals.

But in war, even the greatest warriors might fail.

In war, even legends can die.

Lots of mystery, darkness and surprises in the eleventh (!) book in this series. There’s a traitor in their midst. Not the most ideal when facing the greatest military mind in existence.
As always, a fun popcorn read with a weird western/post apocalyptic mash up.

Thanks to the author for this ARC :)

another good installment of Ungr and his friends in peril

Well I thought the battle would resume right away when I started reading, but it wasn’t until the 25% mark that things got rolling.
We still have the usual gruffness and banter of the gang. There are some unexpected villains and heroes too. Plus there’s something special about Sarah that we need to find out more. Also there are some deaths which we really haven’t had in this series.
I’d say the last 20% was nonstop action.
Peppers has a formula which depending how you react to his style can be good or bad. For me it’s a fun read with enjoyable characters.

Gone on too long

This series started off well, but has devolved into maudlin, self-reflecting drivel. Ungr keeps whining, deflecting, and repeating himself. How many times must we hear others tell him to “take time to live” and not just survive. The platitudes and cliches have become unbearable. The predictable plot turns are far too often resolved with newly planted details that were never foreshadowed.

The series needed to end a long time ago, cuz now it’s just crap. I’m at the point of saying, “Just kill him and put him out of my misery!”

Sorry, Jacob, but Ungr’s now dead to me.

Another thrilling installment in a series that shows no sign of flagging - highly recommended

This is the eleventh book in the series about Ungr, also known as Youngest, who has been trying to keep a magical sword away from the most evil creatures you have ever heard of that took the place of the Eternals, people treated as gods by the populace of their world. All except Youngest were killed and their places taken by shape shifters of some sort, and for the first ten books he has been trying to save people whilst keeping the sword away from the evil doers.

This book opens with Ungr, his friends, and the population of a town called Celes watching and waiting for a massive army of people and freakish monsters to attack the city and kill everyone in it, and trying to prepare for what seems like an inevitable result. Even worse, many of the people in the city are secretly in league with the approaching army. Can they find out who they can trust? Will they survive? How will they survive if they can? How many will die? On the last point I can tell you it is thousands on both sides, but other than that you will need to read the book to find out.

This is a wonderful book, a strong page turner, and it kept me gripped all the way through. If you don't know Jacob Peppers, check out his writing. I have never seen him put out anything bad, making him one of my favourites out of the latest crop of new fantasy authors - well into the top five for me!

Ungr would not have guessed that the siege of Celes would have turned so encompassing and deadly as it turned out to be.
But even then the people would have stood with with each other to protect what is theirs.
But the Reverend is something else. And supernaturally deadly.
And then there has been a rumour of a possible traitor or more and the possibility of tunnels under the city.
Really?
On Stones Stained Red by author Jacob Peppers is steeped in a tense plot that not only keeps the characters in the book on their respective toes, but have readers all tensed up whilst frantically paging the book to see what happens next.
Enjoy

On stones stained red

You continue to weave a great tale with this series. I have been enjoying it all the way. The Wanderer becomes more human as the story moves on. The people who have chosen to be his friend only grow in number. I would have liked for the Wanderer to have smacked the "Sneer" out of Lord Andulin, but Chest La Vie.
Thank you Jacob Peppers. Can't wait for #12!

The Tactician’s army is almost there, and the Wanderer and his people are preparing the citizens of Celes for a siege.

Interesting story, if you skim through some areas. Like the boring 10-page argument at the pre-battle meeting of ‘leaders’ in the Solar.

Fave scenes: Pearl’s information, dinner with Dekker’s family, Ungr’s arrival at the wizard’s room, and Ungr using the alchemist supplies.

For a hundred years, the Wanderer has defied death. For a hundred years, he has kept it at bay. Yet even the greatest warriors can falter. Even legends can die.

Celes is attacked and under siege, the people are defending with help from others. But soon they find the biggest enemy is already among them. Can Ungr and his friends stop this or is it the end of mankind as we know it.

Again another non stop adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Youngest never disappoints...

Peppers continues to elevate his story telling skills. Though we inevitably lose friends, it keeps the story somehow believable. I can't wait to see how Youngest turns the tables on Tactician. If you like adventure, love, and friendship... this series is a must read!

The siege has begun!

Tactician arrived at the end of the last novel, this picks up straight away with the siege begun. In such times danger lurks without, but also within. Who can be trusted and who not, who will stand with Youngest to the end.
