THE STORY

Aestred Thurga is the Reliquant at Arms, a holy warrior tasked with defending the relics of the Imperium.

Whilst returning the legendary Sword of Saarim to its rightful place upon the necropolis world of Katerah, Aestred is ambushed by a cult of the Plague God that steals the blade for themselves. Horrified at her defeat, she plunges herself and her Adepta Sororitas companions into a brutal battle against the forces of Chaos that overwhelm the planet from within, in order to reclaim both the relic and her honour.

But when the billions of heroes laid to rest on Katerah begin to rise from their graves, Aestred must choose whether it is more important to defend the Imperium's people or protect its history, and is confronted with an awful truth – sometimes, a Sister can fail her mission.

It's not normal to see a Warhammer 40K with a rating less than 3.5. For all purposes 3.5 supposedly is good. To be far anything above 3 is overall good. Unfortunately for goodreads this is not the case. Anything below 4 it may not be good. If there is something I don't enjoy goodreads, having use it for over 16 years it's one of the most problematic features - that and the limitation of not having half stars.

but I digress.

What is this book about, well it's about Aestred Thurga as you can see\read in the title. This character is a Reliquant at arms for a non-military faction of the Adepta Sororitas. Her job is to find and then retrieve relics to their rightful place. In this particular case she is tasked of finding the Sword of Saarin and then place it on the necropolis world of Katerah - a planet where hundreds of relics are stored. When they are adding that relic to it's resting place they are attacked by cultists of the Plague God and steal the sword.

After being stolen, they tried to find them but unfortunately a zombie plague starts - maybe the necropolis idea was not that good - and so the sisters must choose between their job to find the relic or to save the planet.

What follows are 140 pages of back and forth, of going from one place to other , retrieving X or Y relic and some sororitas dying. I had high expectations for the end because the final confrontation is quite good - I thought it was going a dark way - unfortunately dumb me of not playing the game, this character exists as a miniature therefore what I thought it may happen was not going to be. That's the problem of a shared world. Books are written for the tabletop - not the other way around.

My favourite character was indeed Hagiolater Dolan.

So why this book is not well liked. the conversations are boring, they are one way sided. Astred was too blind on their mission and never heard or accepted Dolan's word. It's too fast paced to the story so I can understand when people say it could have been a novella. It's too big for the story being told and to be fair, having read this novel, if the objective was to give the character some fluff it didn't - well it did and it was not good.

It is nice to read a book that’s actually from the perspective of the title character for once. So many Black Library novels like to write around the titular character and in some cases that character is barely involved (looking at you Yndrasta and The Vulture Lord). And Emma Gregory is always a joy to listen to in the audiobook version.

Unfortunately, I just didn’t find the narrative that compelling. I guess I was hoping to be invested in Aestred’s story while painting her model. But instead the entire book was about how much of a fuck up she is and how she screwed over a world in the process. I don’t really recall if she achieved her goal now that I think about it, I kinda phased out near the end so I didn’t give the conclusion the attention it deserved.

Now I get to paint her model and every time I include her in my lists I’ll pray to the emperor she doesn’t get all my sisters killed?
