The first thing that stood out to me with Nightmare was the cover art and the tagline: scary eyes and the tagline, “What’s haunting you?” From there A. Renee Hunt gives a vivid yet economical description of the setting; a tiny, tiny house that comes to life in more ways than one. Eek!

The author does a great job of developing the characters in a short amount of time. Cass in a strong-willed young lady set go gain her independence with her new gift of a house. Only that independence will come with a cost. The pace is great here, and Hunt has a talent for raising the stakes gradually, creating the suspense and tension necessary to keep the pages turning., almost by themselves. Yikes!

But, the greatest strength of the story is that it’s unpredictable. From start to finish you, like the protagonist you, never quite know what’s coming next. But at least you get to read it in a place that’s safe. Or is it? Nightmare is a fun short read that will have you shaking in your sheets and wishing you wouldn’t have read it at home alone. Boo!
