Dead Space: A Cozy Resting Place

Rate this book

When Sara and Butch arrived at her new B&B in the midst of a windstorm, she never expected to be drawn into a murder scene on her first night.

The house had withstood every storm, solid and sure for over eight decades. Sara's Aunt Jane had lived behind it's safe walls since 1988. But the wall was no match for the giant fir tree that smashed into the house. Who would have thought a storm could turn that wall into a showcase for murder.

That particular handwaving skeleton had not put in a showstopping appearance until Sara and Butch arrived to take over the business on a night reminiscent of Halloween.

But who would have access to a silent film star’s vacation home on the Oregon coast? Whoever it was had ability to kill and pose the victim inside of a false wall. That takes time. How long had the skeleton been there?

The old actor was said to be an odd duck. Did he hide his worst critic in the wall? Or did the estranged daughter get back at him for abandoning her? Twenty oceanfront acres on the Oregon coast could be hers. Had she killed her father to get the inheritance? Or was it the local antique dealer who had stripped the derelict mansion of much of its finery before Aunt Jane's husband Jeffery bought it for her?

Despite the age of the skeleton, someone still knew what was going on and Sara had landed right in the middle of it.
< br> Between threats and break ins, she would have to figure this out fast, or as the note had said, you may end up in the wall next to him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are engaging and well developed. I appreciated that for once the FMC wasn’t immediately a suspect just because she was new. This mystery was interesting, I loved the historical aspect to it.

The dog is amazing if a bit of a brat lol.

I loved all the ladies in The Garden Club. Sara acts much older than her 36 years. I kept thinking she was in her late 50s or 60s like her new friends. Is she going to get friends her own age?

Couple of things that prevented it from being a 5-star for me.

-kindle listed this as book 2. Where’s book 1? She’s already solved a cold case? She met and adopted Butch during that time? I would’ve loved to read how they met! I hate being dropped into the middle of series missing background information.

-she was a florist? And allegedly that makes her notice things and catalog them like some super sleuth? Kind of a stretch but sure, why not?

-Gerald Fitch! This is the 5th book (from 5 different authors) with that name. Come on! What are the odds? Seriously, step away from the dang AI.

-I like a touch of romance in my cozies. Was disappointed that Sara doesn’t seem to have any chemistry with anyone. The sheriff is too old. It states that he’s been doing the job for 30 years, so 50s? The fire chief is also too old and well he comes off as sketchy and doesn’t like dogs. Then the ending! Gah, this better not be setting up some sort of love triangle. They have no chemistry or spark, doesn’t make sense. I won’t read books with love triangles.

-No descriptions! At least we know how old she is but no idea what she looks like other than she’s pretty.

Loved it !

I’ve read the 1st book in this series and found it hard to put down.
This book keeps your attention right away. As far as I’m concerned BUTCH is the star and Sara like a good doggie mom tries to him in line… there’s so much more to say about this. You’ll have to read the book to find out.
Right from the beginning this story is well laid out . Characters feel real and the plot line keeps you guessing to the end.
I definitely recommend this book.

Something New, Something Old

Butch is one of my favorite fictional dog detectives. This story finds him and his human, Sara, arriving at the B&B+ her aunt is planning on turning over to her. She meets many interesting new people while trying to find out how a body ended up in one of the walls, whose body it is, and why. It was an enjoyable read with a solid plot.

Fantastic cozy mystery especially Butch and all his antics. Loads of twists and turns and that brings you into the group that help find who did it.

Received a copy from the author and this is my honest review.
