I write the kind of books that make you check your locks before bed and leave the lights on just in case.
I'm Kate Allenton, an author who lives in the space where paranormal suspense, supernatural thrillers, and edge of your seat crime fiction collide. My stories range from psychics and reapers in small towns that look perfectly normal until they absolutely aren't, to gripping FBI thrillers where the monsters are all too human.
You'll find me writing the Lost Souls Society series, where death is just the beginning of the mystery, and the Psychic Oversight series, where seeing the future doesn't always mean you can change it.
With over 80 books published, I've spent more than a decade perfecting the art of the cliffhanger ending and the 2 AM "just one more chapter" problem.
I like Ryley St James—er Ryley St James-Maddox as she is quick to point out when people forget or neglect to add Maddox. She’s a reaper, which is someone who has the ability to send spirits to the other side. She’s witty, sometimes cavalier, and is totally devoted to her family. Anything that threatens them threatens her she does not take that lightly.
We have a couple of stories going here. Ryley’s identity has been stolen and she’s on the case of trying to figure out who did it. That leads to a lot more than just identity theft and puts her and her family in the path of one dangerous dude and one very angry ghost.
The second story is about Josh, her adopted son, who is also a reaper, but he’s still learning the ropes. He’s 11 years old and in middle school and has a task of his own. I really like him. He’s been through a lot and sincerely appreciates his new family and never goes against them until he felt like he had to for the sake of another boy. I don’t want to ruin this for anybody else, so I won’t say much more about it other than the fact that he is a nice addition to the series.
I really do like the camaraderie between all the characters in the story. They connect on such a deep level and they look out for each other. I also like the ghost animals and Stretch, Ryley's ghost friend.
The story was interesting, suspenseful, and exciting. There was tension and action that kept me turning the pages to an eventful ending. I would’ve had this done sooner had life not gotten in the way. It was a white-knuckled ride at times and I resented any interruptions.
This could probably be right as a standalone novel, but to truly appreciate the evolution of Ryley, it would be best to read the series from the first book. The whole series rocks my world. It’s supernatural with a flair of humor yet serious emotional elements. The only thing I wish for is character descriptions. We get some, but I was hoping for more. Character descriptions help me connect with the characters and draw me deeper into the story. I've been with this series since the beginning, so I'm already engrossed, but it would be nice to get some periodic reminders of what these characters look like.
It was still a fantastic read and earned an easy five stars.

In this latest addition to the Lost Souls series, a case of stolen identity leads to a murder....and major danger to Ryley and her close family. Her brother, his wife, and their new baby also become targets. Of course, the story involves ghosts of the deceased, some known, some unknown, and some animals. There is never a dull moment! As always, Adler, now Ryley's husband; Josh, their son; and Oscar are there for support and help.
Josh is also faced with his own dilemma as he pieces together the story of a boy from his school. The boy isn't a "true" ghost as his "appearance" isn't right. This draws Josh into trying to figure out what is really happening.
This book does not disappoint and is a fast read since it draws you in from the start and keeps you reading to the very end. In other words, Kate Allenton has done it again.
I don’t know where to begin but holy guacamole this book was absolutely FANTASTIC. It was unputdownable.
Her past came a calling…this was twisty with non stop action. I LOVE the characters in this series. LOVE.
If you love a combination of mystery with a bit of woowoo and characters that leap off the pages…You must read this series. This author is so dang talented and auto read for me.
As usual, this book grabs you at the first couple of pages, and all you can do is hang on! I love all the characters and you just can’t beat the story! Get the book and hang on!!
This book was so good! The whole series is great. I really enjoyed Josh’s part in this book. A murder, a case of stolen identity and an old adversary are all intertwined and Riley is right in the middle. I can’t wait for the next book!
I have loved this series from the very beginning. It just gets better and better. This book is no different.
The story keeps evolving and while we get resolution for part of it, another twist takes its place. Read this whole series. You won't regret a single thing.
