Courtney Dixon writing a dark psychological thriller romance? Yes. Immediately. I'll read anything she writes.
Three of us confused the entire time. Theo, Callahan, and me.
Standard dark romance rules apply. Suspend reality. It gets pretty far-fetched. And check your trigger warnings, because the themes here are heavy.
Mind fucked from start to finish. No idea what was coming next. Theo doesn't know what's happening. Callahan is being slowly dismantled by manipulation. And I was just along for the ride, equally lost.
Insta love that escalates fast. But feelings hit hard for high schoolers experiencing all their firsts. Once you throw in all trauma and it all makes sense. Even through amnesia, the love stays. Their bodies remember each other even when their minds are confused.
I wanted to stab Callahan dad. He’s completely evil. The punishments he inflicts on his own kid is sick along with what he does to others. I have to read the rest of the series to find out where his storyline goes.
Some of the plot felt underdeveloped. Flow got choppy. But the side characters have me curious, and I want to see where this series goes.

Theo and Callan my baby boys ughh I’m so sorry ughh they deserved much more than what they got, they didn’t deserve anything that happened and that goes for everyone in the elite.
Theo and Callan had my soul, when they first got introduced I fell for them hard and I knew something was going to happen and I was so scared and when it did it broke my soul. These boys suffered so much pain, so much trauma; so much fuckery that they became not themselves and it broke me so much seeing what they had to go through.
Let’s just say I hate Sean, and I can’t wait to see is end. That man deserves all the pain in the world.

I don’t know how but EVERY SINGLE TIME Courtney writes I’m consumed by the story. And I feel Callan and Theo may just be my favorites. CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS, please be mindful of your mental health as their story is DARK.
Now… In the beginning these two reminded me so much of The Fox and The Hound with how adorably they meet, the curiosity and excitement of a new friend. Meeting the way they did and becoming the cutest friends and then more.
But Callan, Callan has such a tragic story behind his smile. And Theo, Theo is sunshine. Sunshine and everything good. As we get deeper into their story you learn soooo much and there were parts where I wanted to just hug them both and protect them. This book truly was a m!nd F^ck. There were moments that made me smile, parts that I couldn’t help but cry, and just when I thought I could take a breath that’s when the memories came flooding back and their inner monologue held ALL my attention.
when say I cried for Callan and Theo it was definitely out of anger, yes sadness because again, rough…But these two are going to stay with me for a VERY long time because it all feels so chaotic and real, needless to say I want to see them get everything good because damm they deserve it. With everything they go through there is love there, and that makes me happy even if the love is different, that part of ‘MINE’ is still very VERY much there between them.

Every Rose has its thorn is more of a psychological thriller than a dark romance, but I read it in two days, with tears welling up in my eyes and my nerves on edge. Because it doesn't just manipulate the characters, it manipulates the reader, too, but in a good way, so much so that you get drawn into the story and can't put it down.
It does have some dark elements, please check the trigger warnings.
Callan and Theo met by chance when they were preteens, and that’s when their story began. A story that puts them through a lot, especially Callan, poor thing, but that keeps them going because of the love they have for each other, even if they don’t always realize it.

This is a very dark book that's more psychological horror than romance. There are a few pages of sweetness early on, and the rest of the story is gruesome, brutal, horrific, and violent all the way to the end. There are multiple on-page grapes/assaults including one so brutal it causes bodily damage to the part of their body that was brutalized. READ. THE. TRIGGER. WARNINGS. You will find no softness in this story.
While others may disagree, I would say this book does not have a HEA/HFN ending. Too much has happened, too much damage has occurred, too much is left unresolved for my nervous system to exhale in any way. No, "finally" with a happy sigh. It fits for the story and makes sense for the world; just know what you're in for if you decide to read this book.
My heart broke for Callan from the get-go. I'll be honest, I wished for his death to free him from his suffering. And then Theo - the loss of his sunshine killed me. These boys endure unimaginable torture and manipulation, violence and loss of self.
If you're a dark MM romance reader, Every Rose Has Its Thorn has some similar themes and vibes to Andi Jaxon's Hidden Scars, Gale Ian Tate's Immersed, and S. Legend's Vicious Butterfly, but with the pain and suffering turned up to 11 out of 10 and no relief in sight.
Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it all. I longed for moments of connection, of hope or levity, of something my poor heart could cling to to make the suffering tolerable. But that doesn't really exist in this world. I had no doubt throughout the story what was real; the evil felt glaringly clear. All of the boys are victims AND that doesn't absolve them of the harm they caused. And so. much. harm. was caused.
This book made me realize that in my dark romance, I can get behind the violence when it's the MMCs committing it against others - usually those who deserve it. Scoop someone's eyes out with a melon baller? Well, they tried to kill you. However, I struggle when the violence is prolonged suffering against the MMCs by others. And this book is that second kind of dark, which I'm sure is the kind of dark others prefer. For me, it just hurt and hurt and hurt and hurt. Poor boys.

Wow! This one has left me a little speechless. Often when an author tells you to check your triggers because a book is dark it can seem a little over cautious. This is not one of those times. Check your triggers, then check them again. I knew from reading Spitting Off the Edge of the World that Courtney doesn't hold back when writing scenes about abuse and SA so I was prepared. What I wasn't prepared for was just how darkly depraved Callan's father was and what he put both him and Theo through.
Despite Callan's upbringing, from the moment he meets Theo he loves him hard. Theo has been in foster care his entire life but he is still a ray of sunshine and this rubs off on Callan. Watching their relationship develop over those early years is just beautiful. They make plans to escape together once Callan graduates but Callan's father has other ideas. They are torn apart and then thrown back together in the most horrific way. From 40% in both Theo and Callan are fighting for each other and their lives. There are so many twists and turns and nobody has any idea who they can actually trust.

This is a book that will touch you in so many ways. You’ll want to embrace the main characters and tell them that everything is going to be okay.
While reading, you’ll find yourself wanting to shout out the truth of the situation to them and urge them not to lose heart—and feeling incredibly proud of how they are getting through it all.

I didn't mind the start of the book and the love story between the two main characters, but once we entered the asylum I did not enjoy this. There seemed no reason for the main villain who felt one dimensional. And we had multiple cases of sexual assault for the sake of it. Felt more like torture porn.

Wow… Courtney wasn’t kidding when she said she let herself go and what came out was DARK 😅😮💨. Holy hell. If you’re used to her hurt/comfort books, I need you to check those trigger/content warnings because this is NOTHING like what you’re used to, when it comes to her lol.
This book was an insane MINDF*ck. More than half the time, Theo, Callan and myself were all f*cking confused as to what was real and what was made up. My heart absolutely BROKE for Callan. Truly he had no freaking chance & the fact that he was able to love and feel with Theo, was everything to me as the reader 🥲🥹. That poor kid endured so much abuse, Mindf**k, pain, and suffering at the hands of his father. Don’t even get me started on that psychotic asshole 😒
Theo was just truly an innocent bystander, caught up in something he couldn’t help, because he loved a broken boy. The absolute pain I feel for him as well…. He didn’t deserve any of it. NONE of them deserved any of it. I can’t even tell you how much Courtney had me at the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I knew what direction we were going, Courtney was like “JK! Here’s much worse!” 🤣 my stomach hurt, I felt so nauseous at times, and I definitely stated “WTF” at least 50-60 times a CHAPTER 🥲🤣.
This was such a twisted, wild ride. Please go into this knowing, it’s fiction and just like with every fictional thing we read, not everything is always going to be 100% sound and accurate though I feel like, medically speaking, Courtney did a great job. I will say I very much feel like Theo where I just absolutely couldn’t forgive the Elites…. (Iykyk) however, after reading the authors notes at the end, I’m very happy that these boys will redeem themselves. I truly hope they grovel because…. That was rough…..
I’m so excited for the next book in this series. I’ve been curious about Zane and Percy since we met them (though I have my own unresolved feelings until that redemption happens lol). I loved and appreciate the bonus chapters too! It really gave more insight for the readers as to wtf is wrong with Sean (surface level, I know there’s so much more) and a glimpse into Zane’s mind. I will also say, I can’t be the only one who doesn’t trust this grandfather????? There’s no way anyone is THAT clueless???? He’s high on my “sus list” and no one but Courtney can convince me otherwise 🤣 Can we ALSO please address the fact that everyone was SO creepily attractive?!!!!!?????? Like, they only accepted filthy rich, insanely attractive boys there….. down to the new doc 🤔…There has to be more to that or I’m just reading too deep into it 🤣

I thought I was getting a dark romance.

What I got was psychological torture, abuse, brainwashing, mind control, memory manipulation, trauma, fucked-up power dynamics, and enough plot twists to have me questioning whether I was being gaslit. Constantly.
Callan's story absolutely broke me. This poor boy has been subjected to unimaginable abuse since he was a child, and watching the way it shapes his perception of himself, his emotions, and the people around him is fucking heartbreaking.
And then there's Theo, this beautiful little ray of sunshine who somehow manages to become Callan's reason to keep going. Their connection is intense, messy, heartbreaking, and honestly one of the few things keeping either of them from completely falling apart.
And just when you think you understand what's happening…
You don’t.
Every time I thought I had something figured out, the book would turn around and make me question EVERYTHING. Who could be trusted? What was real? What had been manipulated? What memories were genuine? What the hell was actually happening?!
I spent so much of this book angry, horrified, stressed, emotionally wrecked, and occasionally staring at the page like WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS HAPPENING?
The psychological manipulation in this story is genuinely disturbing, especially watching what it does to Callan and Theo. There were moments where I genuinely had to put the book down because my poor brain needed a fucking minute.
But underneath all that darkness, there is also this incredibly emotional story about two people desperately trying to find their way back to each other after everything has been taken from them.
Callan absolutely destroyed me. Theo broke my heart. And together? Fucking hell 🥺
This book isn't an easy read. There are some seriously brutal themes and content warnings that should NOT be ignored, but if you're looking for something dark, psychologically twisted, emotionally devastating, and packed with WTF moments, this one absolutely delivers.
I finished this book feeling like I had personally survived Thornridge.
I am emotionally exhausted.
I am traumatized.
And naturally, I now need Zane and Percy's book because apparently I haven't suffered enough 😂

Callan's story absolutely broke me. This poor boy has been subjected to unimaginable abuse since he was a child, and watching the way it shapes his perception of himself, his emotions, and the people around him is fucking heartbreaking.
And then there's Theo, this beautiful little ray of sunshine who somehow manages to become Callan's reason to keep going. Their connection is intense, messy, heartbreaking, and honestly one of the few things keeping either of them from completely falling apart.
And just when you think you understand what's happening…
You don’t.
Every time I thought I had something figured out, the book would turn around and make me question EVERYTHING. Who could be trusted? What was real? What had been manipulated? What memories were genuine? What the hell was actually happening?!
I spent so much of this book angry, horrified, stressed, emotionally wrecked, and occasionally staring at the page like WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS HAPPENING?
The psychological manipulation in this story is genuinely disturbing, especially watching what it does to Callan and Theo. There were moments where I genuinely had to put the book down because my poor brain needed a fucking minute.
But underneath all that darkness, there is also this incredibly emotional story about two people desperately trying to find their way back to each other after everything has been taken from them.
Callan absolutely destroyed me. Theo broke my heart. And together? Fucking hell 🥺
This book isn't an easy read. There are some seriously brutal themes and content warnings that should NOT be ignored, but if you're looking for something dark, psychologically twisted, emotionally devastating, and packed with WTF moments, this one absolutely delivers.
I finished this book feeling like I had personally survived Thornridge.
I am emotionally exhausted.
I am traumatized.
And naturally, I now need Zane and Percy's book because apparently I haven't suffered enough 😂

This book was dark, twisted, completely unhinged, and honestly made me feel like I needed therapy, even though every part of me should have been running in the opposite direction. Courtney had me questioning everything and feeling like I was going insane. There were moments where I genuinely started wondering if maybe the villain was right and the reality we thought we knew throughout the entire book wasn’t actually real. Like… excuse me?! What did you just do to my brain?!
Theo and Callan were everything. Their relationship was complicated, messy, obsessive, and somehow still so beautiful. No matter how dark things got or how much was thrown at them, there was this love between them that just couldn’t be erased. Watching their story unfold and seeing the way they found their way back to each other completely warmed my HEA loving heart.
And the other twisted boys?! I already know I’m going to need their stories because Courtney gave us just enough of them to make me insanely curious about what is going on inside those heads. The number of times I questioned my sanity throughout this book should have been documented because I wasn't sure who was being manipulated more, me or Callan and Theo. I absolutely devoured this book. The acts these boys suffered through had me seething in rage. I think what stands out is the raw handling of Callan's internal struggles, which is rendered with heartbreaking intimacy. You feel every layer of his vulnerability, his survival instincts as well as the darkness that holds those instincts hostage. He carries a deeply profound psychological weight, and his trauma is more than a plot device. It's truly the beating heart of his journey which is handled so delicately by the author which makes his struggle feel agonizingly real.
Callan and Theo have a magnetic and complex relationship. They meet as boys and immediately fill the missing pieces of each other. The way they are ripped apart and the sacrifice Callan made was soul crushing. Theo's presence in Callan's life is a literal lifeline. The intricate interplay of trust, protection, and the emotional push and pull as they navigate their situation creates a dynamic that keeps the pages feverishly turning.
One of the most chilling and thought-provoking. elements of this book is the focus on mind manipulation within medical practice. Wow Like holy hell! This book was a masterpiece.
Callan how my heart broke for him the trauma and the lies he had to endure. He’s intense, but he also has a beautiful heart for one person he meets when he’s a teen Theo. Callan was the happiest around Theo. They loved each other made promises. Until his Psycho father took all that way from them. Then the one thing he feared the most happened!!
Theo a sweet shy boy who had his first crush on Callan. He was sunshine a light in CAllan’s eyes. They loved each other spending time with each other at the pond. When he saw Callans’s body he knew. They had a plan until his foster parents tell him they can’t keep him and he’s being adopted this is where everything gets so twisted!
I truly have no words for this book but wow just fucking wow!
Callan and Theo eventually end up meeting up again in thornridge Academy! Let’s just say Callan went through so much I wanted to throw my phone lol. Until he sees Theo hugging his dad and loses it. Theo thinks callan is his adopted brother let’s just say READ THIS BOOK!

I cannot stretch this enough: this is not a romance book in the usual way. It's extremly dark and twisted, and you absolutely should check out the tw-list big time before diving into this story.
That being said, the hatred I felt towards some of these characters in this story was the most intense thing I’ve felt while reading a book in a long time 🤣 I neeeeed a certain thing to happen asap 👀

I’m honestly not completely sure how I feel about this one. It started out really interesting, and I did like the parts where you were constantly questioning who was actually losing it and what was really going on. The darker or more triggering content didn’t bother me, especially since I went into it having read the warnings.
My biggest issue was the pacing and the plot. It felt a little all over the place at times, and there were parts where I was confused about what was happening or why. By the end, I was skimming quite a bit because I’d started to lose interest.
There were also a few things that just didn’t work for me personally, especially the way he was still around and tolerating the people who had assaulted him. I’m completely fine with redemption arcs when they’re done well, but that part was difficult for me to get behind.
I did really like Theo though. I thought he was sweet, and he was probably my favorite part of the book.
The writing itself was good overall, although some of the dialogue occasionally felt a little unnatural to me. I don’t think I’ll continue with the second book, but I can definitely see why this would work for other readers.

What a mind fk this one was and I ate it up! Just when I thought I was figuring it out, the next chapter would just confuse me more. My heart broke for Callan and Theo. Those two, especially Callan, went through so much! Getting to meet them as baby teenagers was precious until their worlds got ripped apart. This book follows Theo, a foster Kid and Callan, the wealthy boy who is severely mistreated by his father. These two are an unlikely pair meeting by accident when Callan stumbles upon Theo fishing. They grow closer and begin their relationship as teens. I enjoyed the first part but the second part was…… a lot.

So when Theo suddenly turns up at Thornridge Academy but doesn’t remember Callan, I was screaming at the pages. 😭
I absolutely loved the obsessive, intense connection between Callan and Theo. Their relationship is messy, emotional, twisted and completely addictive. Watching Callan desperately try to make Theo remember them while also trying to figure out what is actually happening had me hooked. There were so many moments where I genuinely didn’t know what to believe, and I loved that the story kept me second-guessing everything.
Callan especially had me feeling ALL the emotions. His determination to hold onto Theo and the memories he believes are real made their connection feel so intense. And Theo… well, Theo had me wanting answers just as badly as Callan did.

Theo is in the foster system, but he is pure light to Cals darkness. He becomes Cal's hope in a world of pain and suffering until Cal's father rips them apart.
Callan's father is probably one of the most insidious, nasty individuals to ever grace the pages of any book. The things he does to his own son are so vile it really is hard to stomach. Down to a particular event that is described in detail in the book that made me feel physically sick and made me go read something else before I went back to it. *Check your trigger warnings*

This review is going to be utter chaos. I binged this book in less than a day. The battery on my Kindle almost died because I couldn’t put it down. After reading Courtney’s other work, I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little mitts on it and it didn’t disappoint. If you liked Hidden Scars (Andi Jaxon) and / or Vicious Butterfly (S Legend) then this book is for you. It’s absolutely unhinged in the best way possible.
I could visualize the moment Callan met Theo perfectly. The imagery was so clear in my head. Callan had more red flags than a beach during a hurricane, but that’s why we’re here, isn’t it? Theo was everything good and sweet in the world. And then things go to shit. Not that I’m here for realism, but the depiction of brainwashing / mindbreak / mind control seemed pretty plausible to me. There was one clear villain through the story, but I strongly suspect there are other bigger bads waiting in the wings (Grandfather SUS). It also presents the idea of how responsible are you for your actions if you’re not fully in control of your own brain? This review is going to be utter chaos. I binged this book in less than a day. The battery on my Kindle almost died because I couldn’t put it down. After reading Courtney’s other work, I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little mitts on it and it didn’t disappoint. If you liked Hidden Scars (Andi Jaxon) and / or Vicious Butterfly (S Legend) then this book is for you. It’s absolutely unhinged in the best way possible.
I could visualize the moment Callan met Theo perfectly. The imagery was so clear in my head. Callan had more red flags than a beach during a hurricane, but that’s why we’re here, isn’t it? Theo was everything good and sweet in the world. And then things go to shit. Not that I’m here for realism, but the depiction of brainwashing / mindbreak / mind control seemed pretty plausible to me. There was one clear villain through the story, but I strongly suspect there are other bigger bads waiting in the wings (Grandfather SUS). It also presents the idea of how responsible are you for your actions if you’re not fully in control of your own brain? Every Rose Has Its Thorn is the first book in the Thornridge Academy series. Please read the trigger warnings before you start this book because most of the triggers happen on the page. I couldn't put this book down once I started because of how gripping it was. This is the story of Callahan and Theo. This was a very dark and chaotic story but boy was it good. This was a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns, of not knowing what's real and what's not. I loved both Callahan and Theo and wanted to hug and protect them at different times. I loved the chemistry between these two. This book was a minefield of emotions but so worth it. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book as a 5 star dark read.

What in the what did I just read? I think I know, but I have questions, I have theories and did I mention huh?
This book takes you on a journey, you question EVERYONE and their intentions. You think everyone could be the one that is telling the truth but also lying. Yes give your head a shake, it is confusing but oh so good! I had such a good time with this book.
I am the type of reader that sees the book played out like a movie in my head as I read, this book creates the ultimate thriller, psychological mind f*ck!
Now, I need to express that reading triggers are important here. You also need to let yourself get lost in a world where reality is pushed past the brink of real.
Callan has experienced nothing good in his life, abused and manipulated by his father his whole life comes across light and sun in the form of Theo. That is what I know! Their relationship is possessive and messy. Then it gets flipped upside down turned sideways and corrupted beyond recognition.
Theo is just as obsessed with Callan and when things happen and he questions his relationship with not only him but everyone around them. What is real, what are lies being told to them. He thinks he knows but can he trust his mind?
When these two come together again it is not as loving as before, Callan is broken, scarred and left to defend himself against the demons he can see and the ones he is not sure he is imagining. Through it all he knows his love for Theo is real or is it?
Callan and Theo get their HEA but it is not easy, this book ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. The overarching questions of this book are left mostly unanswered and it leaves you desperate for answers. I cannot wait to learn about the other young men at this school/hospital and continue to grapple with what I know and believe to be true to what actually is.

Every Rose Has It Thorn by Courtney W. Dixon is definitely a dark psychological thriller romance.
This book is definitely darker than some of Courtney's other books.
Every Rose Has Thorn is definitely twisted and takes you on a wild journey. You're trying to keep with everything that is happening.
Callan needs a hug and to be protected at all costs. Theo was sweet as well.
Courtney has a way with words that sucks you and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Definitely read the triggers warnings before reading just in case of them are not for you.
I can't wait to see what Courtney writes next.

This book is an emotional and dark romance following Callan and Theo as they try to find their way through a past filled with pain, trauma and secrets. Callan has been carrying the scars of an abusive father for years, while Theo is struggling with missing memories and slowly uncovering pieces of the past that change the way he sees everything. As the truth starts coming together, the two of them have to face some incredibly difficult emotions while figuring out what they mean to each other.
This book honestly hurt my heart in so many places? Callan was the character who affected me the most. Knowing what he had endured and seeing how deeply it had shaped him made it really hard not to feel for him. He deserved so much better. I loved seeing those small moments where he was finally able to feel safe, loved, and wanted. Theo's journey was emotional too. Watching him deal with the gaps in his memory and slowly start questioning what he thought he knew kept me invested in the story. There were so many moments where I just wanted to reach through the pages and protect these two from everything they had been through.
Their relationship wasn't always easy and some parts of the story felt heavy or moved a little slower for me, but the emotional connection between them was what kept me reading. There was so much pain behind their story, but also a beautiful sense of hope and healing.
This was definitely an emotional roller coaster for me. It isn't a light or easy romance. If you enjoy darker stories with trauma, secrets, complicated characters and a romance that comes with a lot of emotional baggage, this one definitely delivers.

This book was insane from start to finish! Once I started I felt like I could not stop! Courtney has a way of sucking you into her stories and putting a chokehold on you and it’s truly one of my favorite things about her writing!
Callan and Theo my god! My sweet sweet babies 😍❤️ I love them so much and my heart HURT for them throughout the whole story. They get put through the wringer and at times it’s hard to read. I don’t want to give too much away but definitely check the TW’s bc this book has dark and heavy themes.
If you like dark/gripping stories with a psychological aspect you’ll definitely enjoy this one!

Usually within the first few chapters I can get a good grip on a plot and pretty much figure out what direction a story is going, it takes a lot to throw me off at this point. This book though, this damn book, I just couldn't get a grasp of it! I would think I had it and then the rug would get ripped out from underneath me! Had me questioning myself just as much as the MCs!! It's a heavy book, the triggers are many, but man did I love it!! The mystery behind everything and I was dying to know what was going to happen next! I can't wait for the next one, it ends in a slightish cliffhanger, a lot is left unanswered, and I'm gonna need the next book ASAP!
