Gives advice on selecting small sailboats that can be transported by trailer, discusses the fundamentals of sailing, and tells how to plan cruises and outfit a boat
Robert Forrest Burgess is an American author of non-fiction adventure books, as well as sport fishing and scuba diving magazine articles. His photographs illustrate his material.
I thought the ranting and raving about the Com-Pac boat design, and manufacturing was more than a little over done, and perhaps at the exclusion of some other fine small boats, the specifications of some of those were mentioned in Appendix 2. I noticed a few typos, or technical errors. I recommend the book for beginners, lots of good information to sort through and consider... although somewhat dated now. I learned some of what he said through experience, and some of what he said i don't personally don't agree with, but the conditions he sails in are different than mine, and it is safe to say sailors often disagree on technicalities. The good and the bad sort of balance out, and I don't know of any other books on trailer sailing, so I did give it three stars: I liked it and recommend it even with its flaws. Footnote: I reread this book Feb. 2015 and updated this review.
Terrific resource for those starting to investigate small sailboats. It's refreshing to have a non-Internet reference book for something as unique as trailerable sailboats.
