Light's Betrayal
A DARKNESS HAS FALLEN OVER VALINDAR.
Twenty years ago, the god of Light abandoned his order of elite channelers, the Luminar, leaving them scattered and hunted to extinction. In their absence, the Eternum Syndicate rose from the shadows, erasing every trace of the old power.
Salvynd and Rogue want nothing to do with any of it. Two street gamblers in the rotting Lower District of Meridas, they survive on luck, charm, and keeping their heads down. Until a chance encounter with Vee, a noble-born girl who doesn't belong in their world, ignites something forbidden: the Light, long thought dead.
As the Eternum closes in, Salvynd and Rogue find themselves pulled into a war they never wanted, alongside a girl whose loyalties may be their greatest threat.
In a world where every glimmer of hope demands a devastating price, they will have to choose what they're willing to sacrifice before the Darkness claims them completely.

Light’s Betrayal is exciting and impossible to put down. Wesley Jackman created an entirely unique universe that draws you in deeper each chapter. If you like books such as The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Licanius Trilogy, then this book should be next on your list to read!

If you told me this was a debut, I’d call you a liar. This doesn’t read like a first book. It reads like someone has been living in this world in the dark for years, just waiting to set it loose.
We see the Light in others before we recognize it in ourselves. Jackman builds the whole book around that idea, and it lands with a force.
What stuck with me most is how the right person can bring back a Light that had long since gone Dark. The people we surround ourselves with crack open the pieces we’ve spent years protecting, the ones the world slowly wore down, and they pull the best of us back to the surface.
It’s a story about mental and emotional growth. But it’s just as much about love and appreciation. For family, for friends, and most of all for self. We all wrestle with imposter syndrome, but worth isn’t proven in the easy moments. It’s showing up when things are hard, and pushing through the self-doubt anyway, that actually defines us.
The harder truth is the one that lingers: there’s Darkness in all of us. Morality comes down to motivation, not the Darkness itself.
As much as Jackman wants this to be straight dark fantasy, it leans into romantasy too, and it’s better for it. The slow burn through the first half had me feral, but he never breached the threshold, holding to the idea that sometimes there are forces more important at play than romantic love itself.
If you need a comparison, it reads like Callie Hart’s “Fae & Alchemy” series crossed with the darkness of Bardugo’s “Ninth House,” though I’d argue the plot here is more compelling. If you love morally gray characters, a world that earns its shadows, and a slow burn with real stakes, you’ll devour this.
All of it rests on the writing. Every transition, every jump in plot, pulls you deeper without ever losing the reader, like the author has complete command of where your attention goes. Nothing is accidental. The world building, the timelines, what gets revealed and exactly when, the foreshadowing, the allegory woven through all of it. You can feel the intention behind every single choice, and when it all comes together, you feel it in your chest.
Jackman leaves you wanting more. There’s a real emptiness sitting here without the next book to pick up. I need the next one. Immediately.
Five stars, without hesitation. Read this one.

Light's Betrayal is fantasy storytelling at its best. From the very first page, the world-building is breathtaking—bustling cities, untamed wilderness, mysterious powers, and a storyline you can tell has so much to offer with hidden secrets and adventure waiting for you to explore. The characters are equally compelling. Each one is layered with both beauty and flaws, with motivations and relationships that pull you in and keep you invested. The protagonist’s journey is both thrilling and emotionally resonant, and the supporting cast adds depth and intrigue at every turn.
The story itself is utterly gripping. Twists and revelations are perfectly paced, keeping you on edge while weaving a narrative that feels both epic and personal. If you’re a fan of series The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon), you’ll find yourself completely enthralled by Light’s Betrayal. It’s a book that’s impossible to put down and one that will leave you eagerly anticipating Book 2.
A must-read for anyone who loves adventure, magic, and unforgettable characters.

A first time novel by W.B. Jackman, you dive straight into a new fantasy world full of magic, bustling cities, a pantheon of gods, frightening creatures, and lovable characters. I’ve read first time novels before, so I was surprised to find how smooth of a read this was. Jackman finds a way to create a story that any one of any age or background could read, without insulting the readers intelligence. A twist on the classic hero’s journey, fight between good and evil. Weeks after reading, I’ve been desperate to return to this world and explore these characters. There is so much yet to explore in this world and I cannot wait for the sequel!

If you enjoy epic adventures, you’ll enjoy Light’s Betrayal. It gave me Licanius trilogy vibes. It also has some dark, creepy characters and elements which I really enjoy in my fantasy books. The magic system is unique, and the world building is layered. Even the way time is measured is intentional in a way that is unique to this world rather than borrowed from ours.
Congrats to W.B. Jackman on his debut novel!! Looking forward to book 2.

I genuinely could not put this book down! The world-building was incredible, and the character development kept me hooked the entire time. Every part of the story felt intentional and so well written. It’s exciting, immersive, and one of those books that stays on your mind after you finish it. A Fantasy World You’ll Get Lost In! I’m beyond proud of W.B. Jackman for this release and already can’t wait for book two.
