Dark romance where desire is dangerous, and love refuses to behave.

J. Sorelle is a dark romance author known for emotionally intense, character-driven stories centered on obsession, devotion, and Black women being loved fiercely and without compromise.

Her work explores morally gray desire, second chances, and the thin line between tenderness and control—where love is consuming, boundaries are tested, and walking away is never easy.

Blending urban romance with darker themes, she writes flawed characters who love too hard, feel too deeply, and refuse to stay untouched.

When she’s not writing, she’s building playlists for fictional couples, rewriting scenes at 2 a.m., or being supervised by her pitbull, who believes every story needs higher stakes.

THE PLOT HOLES! THE PLOT HOLES!

Allow me to preface this by saying that although there was an ARC notice at the beginning of this copy, this review will be a little harsh and may contains some spoilers but I was asked for complete honesty and I am going to be as honest as I can. I'm going to break it down into several points just for clarity. Let’s get into it.

Oversimplified summary:
'Marked By Him' is a story following Camille and Javier, a bottle girl and tattoo artist, in Atlanta as they try to traverse a blossoming relationship, outrun her past with the ex from hell, and his past with a gang he thought he left behind.

Storytelling:

Plot holes:

Characters / character development:
There were soooo many characters in this book and honestly they were not needed! I love that she had community and support and a chosen family but please dial it back. If I'm being honest, I think Cam had the most actual growth throughout this book though. She started off hard and unable to trust (obviously with good reason), and eventually she was able to, not only, completely let in her friends but also this man who she perceived as unserious and too flirty. While I don't see her entering her "soft girl era" she was able to relax into the relationships around her and find comfort in the ability to try to plant roots for the first time in her life. I love that for her!

Final thoughts:
While I think that this book has so many ways it can grow, I appreciated some of the unique ways that the author took a story/plot that has been heard before and made it her own. I am thankful for the opportunity to have received this ARC and I hope she doesn't hate me too much. But one question to the author: Who was the mom dropping her off to during her disappearances that when she finally stopped showing up, Cam had to go into the system if she was already leaving for days and weeks at a time? Why was this different?

Until next time :)

This was an ARC review and as much as I wanted to like this… I didn’t
I’m going to keep this short
As an author myself, I know the energy that goes into books but honestly this book was…

First of all it read like a badly written chat gpt script
Every chapter and scene ended with those annoying double statement sentences. An example of one:

“Some lines once crossed, erase themselves behind you”
“Now you’re selling flesh in my territory like a man who’s never heard of consequences”
“Like she’s trying to read a room she never should have walked into”
“I bled my secrets all over your sheets while you gave me nothing but locked doors”

This is to name a few
There were a lot more

The story also somehow felt dragged
We kept going around in circles and omg the FMC was so frustrating. She’s such a caricature and she’s actually so stupid in some scenes I wanted to rip my hair out.
The MMC was also your typical “savior” and his behavior came out of left field. One minute he’s a quiet, calm person and the next he has a drug past????
Pick a struggle please

I’m also not a huge fan of books written wholly in black American vernacular
It was… difficult to get into but that in itself isn’t the reason for the low rating.

But yeah, my major frustration was the AI writing.
It was just so difficult to get into because I KNOW AI and that was AI.

I really wanted to give it a 2 but that would be disingenuous.

2.5 stars

This one was a letdown for me. There were so many heavy and traumatic moments throughout the story, but I never felt like there was meaningful growth or healing for the FMC. After everything she endured, it felt like she ended the book with the same people around her but without much internal progression. I would’ve liked to see more focus on her actually working through things, therapy, self-discovery, hobbies, coping mechanisms, anything that showed active healing.

I also struggled to fully connect with the characters emotionally. I usually love a found family trope, but here a lot of the dynamics felt more like explanations for behavior than actual character development.

The scene between her and Dre at the end especially didn’t land for me. I understood the intention behind wanting closure, but the execution felt frustrating rather than empowering.

Overall, this felt very different from book one in terms of writing style, world building, and emotional connection. I personally love romances where you can really feel the relationship develop the chemistry, vulnerability, little moments, and gradual falling in love. This felt more rooted in lust, trauma, and forced proximity than emotional intimacy for me.

This book checked all of the boxes! Love, Mystery, Family, and of course, hot sex scenes. Even though this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone book. This book is about Cam and Javi, who blew my mind. We are introduced to Cam, who is in foster care and saves herself from rape by running away. A man in her life that she thinks cares, but we can tell early on that he's running a game. Cam learns this the hard way. Enter Javi, who has been waiting for a whole year to get Cam in his orbit. Javi shows up for Cam in a way she's never experienced before. She's used to men wanting her for her looks and never truly wanting to know her. Javi showed Cam that being vulnerable is not a weakness. Showing her that you can trust a man who helps you without expecting anything in return. Javi stepped back into a life he had left behind to make sure Cam was safe. Javi and Cam will take you on a journey through the struggles of being enough and discovering self-worth through the eyes of someone you love. You'll love the Inked Line family and their brand of faithfulness and raw honoesty with each other. This book has the sex scenes that will make you melt, character lines that will make you laugh out loud, family/friend love, and of course, the drama everyone loves.

ARC review

I enjoyed this book. Finished it in two days. Did Cam piss me off at times? Absolutely. But Javi's emotional maturity is *chef's kiss*. I might have different feelings if I would've known this was the second book in a series because I like to read things in order. There was room to flesh out the story a little more to fill in the holes but they didn't bother me much.

I would've liked a little more backstory on Cam and Javi since they were the main characters. I appreciated the author not going fully into Cam's childhood abuse but the flashbacks could have been done a little better. I was confused when the book began until I realized what was a memory and what was present day. Javi's intro also felt a little rushed because I was a little confused about how they knew each other.

The friendship between the girls was a good example of sisterhood. They were really her ride or dies and I hate that it took forever for Cam to realize that.

Overall I felt like this was an easy read (kept my interest) and I was able to pick up on things that I didn't realize before when I read it again.

CHEF'S KISS! JSorelle once again did not disappoint with this book. The continuation&transition from book one does not take away anything from the main characters of this chapter (Javi& Cam). This chapter focused heavily on healing, self awareness, actualization, family bonds, friendship turned family and the consequences of past actions and how they bleed into the present and possible future. Forgiveness and Love are heavily represented at all times within the book not just as an outlet but for the understanding that the world needs love and love keeps us going in this world all things considered. chapter transitions, arcs and synchronizations from scene to scene all tell a story without taking the main story away nor shadowing it. I recommend this book in its entirety to everyone looking to heal, looking for a way to find out if they're still worth it-because you are worth it, you deserve it. This book will have you feeling everything all at once, gradually and deservedly and at the end of the day, it will be A FAVORITE!

Cam.. my girl… you made me feel so many different emotions but in the end, you made the right choice because JAVIIIII?!! Whewww… he sounds like the man of my dreams… and the plot was so beautiful that even though I was yelling and cursing Cam, I still wanted her to win.

I received an ARC from the author and even though she asked me to write a review, I would’ve written one regardless because I loved this story. After being introduced to the characters in “Inked by Him”, I wasn’t sure if I would like this one as much, BUT I did! The reality of loving the wrong person and trying to right the wrongs of your past, this book gives you the transparency of all of that. Cam grows so much and learns what healthy love is. Javi does everything and anything to keep cam safe and happy. Read it, you won’t regret it.

✨ARC REVIEW✨

Whew!

Keeping in theme from book 1- this story has some dark aspects, tackling some heavy topics. I highly advise paying attention to the trigger warnings.

After being introduced to this couple in book 1, I was interested in their story. But I was quickly annoyed with Cam’s stubbornness even though I understood her decision making.

Overall I enjoyed Cam and Javi relationship and watching them build.

The errors were a bit distracting and perhaps less redundant statements. At times it felt like I was being told the same thing over and over. Definitely looking forward to more from this bunch, but I’m nervous with how each future pairing is basically etched in stone. At some point it feels too fictional for everyone to have found their person within the same group.

Vulnerable, heart wrenching and hopeful

I stayed up late to finish this and lack of sleep was completely worth it!

I knew from the tropes list and the dedication that this was going to hit the feels HARD and I was absolutely right.

J Sorrelle balances spice, trauma, vulnerability and found family so well!

Cam and Javi - the patience, the transparent moments , the raw emotion - they were tears worthy. The way this found family rides for one another? Admirable. you will cuss a little, cry a little, and kick your feet and giggle too.

This is book 2 and I am already locked in for whatever books come next.

I read this as an ARC. It's not the kind of subtype of romance I usually read. I enjoyed the main characters and the ATL based storyline, but it was a bit confusing as there were so many characters! Perhaps better if I'd read the first book. I did like the relationship between the Javi and Cam. The spicy scenes were well written and I especially liked the tattooing scene. As other's have mentioned, the overuse of the word "something" was off-putting. I don't read gang novels or have firsthand experience with that world, but her ex was given an unusual number of chances which made suspension of disbelief hard.

4.5 ⭐️. First and foremost, that dedication? Did you kiss the brick before you threw it, girl 🥲🥹😂.

Will come back to fully review, but just know I finished this in less than 2 days. No notes, except where do I find my Javi and soft girl era.

Thank you to J. Sorelle for the opportunity to read this ARC and give an honest review. I will definitely be going back to read the first book in the series and continuing with any that follow 🤍

Arc Review

4.6 🌟I was so excited and honored to be chosen to arc read for the next installment of The Inked Line series.

It did not disappoint! From the start, the characters drew me in. Just like the first book. The resilience and perseverance the main characters showed was amazing. Found family, forgiveness, and choosing someone unconditionally are all themes found in this book. Definitely a must read!

Reading Cam and Javi's story, there were a few times I wanted to slap Cam. As I continued to read, I began to understand and empathize with her. By the end, I wanted to hug her and tell her everything will be okay.

This story is more than your typical romance where the perfect couple overcomes a small misunderstanding to live happily ever after. If you like your romance with gunfights, kidnappings, and explosions and excitement you'll enjoy Marked by Him.

1.5⭐️…I was excited for this book. Unfortunately, it didn’t deliver. It took me WAY too long to read this. I should have DNF…Too many plot holes, too long and stretched out for the many plot holes, too many metaphors and similes, and irritating “deep” one liners at the end of each chapter. I can tell this is heavily AI directed, which is sad. Cam and Javi’s story deserved better.

2nd book just as great as the 1st

The author has a talent that brings the heat and vivid imagination to life. The cat and mouse element of the book held my interest to the very end. Highly recommend this author and the series 👌🏼
