It starts with lies.

And for twenty-four years, Ette has survived on them—an impressive feat for someone who can only speak the truth.

Born with the golden eyes of an arcanist—a woman meant to see and interpret magic in all its forms—she has built her life on careful deception, passing as something she is not, and disguising what she cannot do… because Ette is blind to it all.

When her mother departs for her homeland in search of the rare, bitter herb that keeps her lifelong illness at bay, Ette is sent early to Newl’s Court to have her worth assessed.

For most, it’s an opportunity. For her, it’s a sentence.

The court would sooner tear a flower to shreds than admire it—and Ette has none of the one thing she is meant to provide.

Blind to magic, bound by truth, and dependent on poison, she should not last.
Yet facing smiles dripping with venom, a fey male who laughs at her fate while pulling its strings, and violence dressed as tenderness, Ette claws her way towards survival using the only weapon she has: her mind.

The more useful she proves herself, the more deeply she becomes entangled in a court where cruelty wears beauty, danger feels intoxicating, and fate waits eagerly to decide what she will become.

But Ette has never bowed willingly to fate.

And she has no intention of starting now.

~~Lies of Fates is for readers who love immersive, character-driven fantasy that lingers in simmering tension, court politics, dangerous attraction, relationships with teeth, and the gradual unraveling of fate rather than nonstop action~~

About the author

K.R. Rand

1 book7 followers
K. R. Rand wrote a novel out of spite after a series of romantasy DNFs finally pushed her over the edge.

Once the third super-hyped romantasy novel thumped closed within a month—and after suffering what she maintains was a very reasonable breakdown—she decided that if she couldn't find the story she wanted to read, she would write it herself. Three months later, she had finished her debut novel, Lies of Fates. Then she started another, got distracted during a brief attempt to get traditionally published, realized it sucked the fun out of writing for her, and immediately jumped back into writing whatever she wants, however she wants.

K. R. has been writing stories since she first got her hands on a yellow legal pad in elementary school. Constantly misplacing her phone and rarely on social media, it wasn't until her late twenties that she truly discovered romantasy and realized there was a name for the kinds of stories she'd been writing all along—and that she'd unwittingly written a shadow daddy, and all that that implies, at the impressionable age of twelve...quite possibly mentally scarring one of her best friends and original beta reader.

Her work is heavily influenced by a love of character-driven storytelling, psychological and emotional realism, intricate worldbuilding, logical magic systems, and romances that take their time. She has a particular weakness for enemies-to-lovers where enemies are created from more than one slightly snarky comment, fated mates where love has claws, slow-burn tension that doesn't combust over a span of three pages, and morally gray characters who were not secretly gold all along. Her stories focus on relationships that develop gradually, characters who earn their path, and plots that emerge naturally from character choices rather than forcing characters wherever the story needs them to go.

Above all, she wants to create the kinds of books she spent years searching for: unique stories that feel immersive, emotionally satisfying, and memorable long after the final page.

Lies of Fates is the first installment in her ongoing fantasy series, a project that quickly taught her she has absolutely no ability to estimate how many pages a story requires. While the second book is already underway, it is temporarily on pause while she focuses on Spring, a slice-of-life romantasy that stubbornly refused to leave her alone until she wrote it.

When she isn't writing, she's usually indulging in hobbies that make her sound like she should be eighty-six years old with thirty cats: knitting, crochet, and embroidery. She shares her home with one cat, two large dogs, and a husband who displays enough cat-like behavior that she occasionally counts him as a second one. In her remaining free time, she can usually be found gaming, watching anime, or disappearing into yet another fictional world.

Step into a fae court where secrets are currency, deception lurks around every corner, and each encounter feels like a calculated move. The MMC and FMC clash with fierce dislike yet share an undeniable connection neither wants to admit, every moment between them electric with tension, their rivalry a dangerous game of control and desire.

Vivid world-building, compelling characters, and an ending that left me eager for the next book. A brilliant debut that feels fresh and full of promise.

Thank you for the ARC copy!

4.75 Stars!

While it started off quite slow and I drifted here and there, the intrigue kept pulling me back to find out more. After I settled in, it sucked me right in and I ended up devouring the remainder of the book I didn't want to put down.

I found her writing lyrical and descriptive, with detailed world building and taking time develop the characters and immerse you into this story. I love that his book leans more fantasy than romantasy, as I love immersing myself into worlds beyond ours. While I have no problem with romance or well written spice, I need to feel invested in it, that it is earned and has developed as opposed to instant attraction and instant gratification. Which I feel this debut novel is doing right.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tease, the mystery, the slow burning, aching tension in an intriguing fantasy world filled with magic, secrets, politics. Cunning.. This author built feelings of want, need and desire slowly in a world where you can escape to in your mind…

The Impactful cliffhanger ending left me breathless and in in a bit of shock. I have questions and theories, I need more and I'm yearning to devour the rest of the series.

This debut novel is a slow burn, and it feels like its setting the scene for a larger story yet to unfold. I feel like it needs to be savored and enjoyed slowly as it hints at and uncovers truths. I have an itch to re-read so that I may pick up details I may have missed as I did end up reading into the early morning hours when the mind starts drifting closer to sleep.

Thank you for the advanced reader copy which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I am now invested in this series and look forward to the next book.

Ette, an arcanist with little to no magic lives with her Mother, a renowned arcanist. Due to an illness, her Mother must travel to find an herb that keeps Ette’s alive. Due to certain circumstances, Etta cannot stay in her hometown nor go with her Mother and therefore, to get help with her magic, she must travel to Newt’s Court. It’s a fey court where High Fey, fey and arcanist go to study and play. There is knowledge, but no teachers. Ette must learn to survive in a magically powerful environment with dangerous fey and powerful arcanist. She is armed only with the lessons her Mother has taught her; lessons that give her power without needing magic.

At Newt’s Court she encounters Roan, a dangerous High Fey, who takes an unhealthy interest in her. He’s not the only male that takes an interest in Ette. She must learn to navigate who can be alliances, who might be lovers and who try to toy with her, while hiding the truth of her magic.

There are also some mysterious disappearances of some people that will probably be explored in the future books.

If you like a FMC who may not be magical, but can stand up to the ruthless fey while navigating the fey court filled with debauchery, lust and death; a couple of morally grey MMCs, slow burn, enemies to lovers story, you will enjoy Lies of Fate.

I like the book and will continue the series. My only criticism is there was too much book time spent on the first revelry, a fey ball. I like the banter between Ette and Rone. I like that Ette is not magically strong, but is intelligent. I like the plot and especially the twist at the end. The spice level is probably .5 to 1 🌶️.

Lies of Fates was a really enjoyable read for me, especially because the world and characters were interesting enough to keep me invested even when the plot slowed down. The story follows Ellodette. She has a curse and is sent away so her mom can find things that she needs to help her, but she is sent into a faye court where everyone has magic except for her, all while struggling with the feeling that she doesn’t belong but won’t give up despite her circumstance. And the tension between her and Roan?! If you love a morally gray MMC, enemies-to-lovers tension, secrets, and fae magic, this definitely delivers.

One thing I really loved was how vivid the character descriptions were. I could picture everyone so clearly, which made the world feel even more immersive. While a lot of the story focused on building the world and setting things up, the ending completely made up for the slower middle. That cliffhanger had me shocked, a little confused, and immediately wanting the next book.

Overall, this felt like a strong introduction to the series, and now I need to know what happens next. If you love fae fantasy with secrets, tension, and an ending that leaves you desperate for more, this one is worth checking out.

ARC Review!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🫑

What a wonderful debut novel! I was pulled in right from the beginning by the characters and then by the setting and I was constantly on the edge of my seat not knowing who I could trust. This story follows Ellodette “Ette”, who is cursed and has very little magic and is sent to Newl’s Court while her mother searches for feybane, an herb that helps keep her illness at bay. Despite having little to no magic, she does her best to hold her own by using her wit and standing her ground, even when it seems everyone around her is trying to tear her down.

What I loved about this book:

🖤 The FMC Ette who is such a strong female character despite what she considers weaknesses, she’s cunning and does what she needs to, to survive
🖤 The MMC Rone, I mean, I THINK he’s the MMC? 🧐 For anyone who loves a truly morally grey man, Rone does not disappoint.
🖤 That ending! 🤯 I’m a masochist and I love a book that ends on a big cliffhanger and has me chomping at the bit for the next book
🖤 The unique magic systems and different powers, it all felt very fresh even after reading a ton of Romantasy novels

What to expect when reading:

🖤 Morally Grey Characters
🖤 Vicious Court Setting
🖤 Political Intrigue
🖤 Tension & Angst

I am going to provide a review with no rating as I have read partially and am deciding to set this one down.

It is very wordy in its descriptions and spelling out of every detail. It is still beautifully written and had statements or lines that are poetic and worthy of quotes for its meanings. Heavily worded, therefore the attention needs to be given to it rather than it grabbing of attention. To give the time to read it. (I may just pick it up later). It is focused heavily on world building and 1st person narrative delving into character's emotional/mental state which lends the plot to be slow in moving (albeit knowing it was not to be action driven it took a long time to move in any actual direction).

I found myself easily distracted away from it and bored somewhat which is why I decided to put this down, it had nothing to do with the creativity and likeness of the content.

I was at 108 pages on Kindle when rendering this review and stopping. I am thankful for this ARC read and still would recommend it to the correct audiences that are in the mood to sit with a book and give it time and due diligience. I will update this when I circle back to it in the future.

I absolutely adored this book! Like the author I feel morally grey characters turning out to be good all the time is becoming a little frustrating. This book is nothing like that.

Even though the FMC and MMC have this tether they both deny, every meeting the MMC shows he’s not the good guy. But, the more you get into the story the more you think, “oh he’ll come around.”

This book kept me on my toes! Some books are super predictable, which is fine because the story is always amazing, but sometimes I wish I couldn’t predict what would happen. Thank you! This book I could not and did not predict anything in advance.

The world building, incredible! The story, for a first book did have a little lull in the beginning but that’s just because the author is immersing you in the world, picked up quickly and I could not put the book down. Love the way everything is described. Love the characters. Love the plot and how I am now waiting for book 2 eagerly and impatiently!

Thank you so much for allowing me the privilege of an ARC. I am so honored and cannot describe how much I loved this book. Book 2 better come quickly!!

I NEED BOOK TWO. Immediately.

K.R. Rand really said, here, have a million questions and absolutely no answers—and somehow I ate up every single one. 😂

The mystery surrounding Ette had me hooked. I kept trying to figure out who she really is, what she's capable of, and what the hell is going on beneath everything we're being told.

And then there's Rone.

How gray can one man be?! Because I spent half this book trying to figure out whether I should trust him, fear him, or just sit back and enjoy the chaos. And the biggest question of all:

WHO IS HE TO ETTE?!

The tension, the secrets, the unanswered questions... the mystery is DELICIOUS.

I love when a fantasy romance doesn't hand you all the answers and instead makes you question every character, every interaction, and every little detail. Lies of Fates had me theorizing, second-guessing, and desperately wanting to know what was actually going on.

And now I'm supposed to just sit here and wait for book two?!

Absolutely not.

★★★★★ — Give me book two, K.R. Rand. I need answers, I need Rone, and I need to know who Ette really is!

This ARC had all the ingredients I usually love: fae, mages, layered politics and a world full of secrets. This is one I definitely want to reread to see if I can start piecing together some of the woven mysteries I haven’t quite figured out yet.

The world-building is strong and detailed, with multiple threads coming together in a way that feels intentional and set up for bigger reveals. There’s an undercurrent of intrigue throughout, especially with the idea that fae aren’t supposed to be able to lie, yet something clearly isn’t adding up. That alone kept me questioning everything.

The focus leans heavily on the FMC, Ette, and it feels like we’re only just beginning to understand her place in everything. There’s a sense that major revelations are still coming, and I’m interested to see how her story unfolds as more truths come to light.

Overall, this feels like a setup book with a lot of moving pieces falling into place. Even without having all the answers yet, I can see the potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing what awaits the FMC in the next book.

This book at first started slowly and I immediately thought, “oh man.. I accepted this ARC and I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t finish it.” But I am SO glad I didn’t stop. The constant back and forth pull of longing, the dizzying moments of lash out and sudden switch in thoughts had my eyes DEVOURING the pages. This book turned into one I finished and wanted to hurl across the room in frustration because I wanted MORE.

The descriptive writing made picturing the scenes easy, the character profiling was spot on, and even I feel as though I’m craving the touch of characters from this story.

The author has me hooked. I want more, right now haha! The ending was a MASSIVE cliffhanger, but this book was worth every moment of lost sleep this week. If you want a Romantasy that is completely different from others, one where the bad guy doesn’t turn out good in the end (so far at least), this is your book.

I HIGHLY recommend adding this book to your TBR!

The story starts out slowly, but the descriptiveness of the author will pull you into the magical world with arcanist and fae collide. There are secrets about the main female character, that fate holds. There are twist and turns that leave you reaching to know more. Newl’s Court, is a designation that must be reached , and where the main stage starts to take place . Learning if fae, high fae and magics each arcanist holds leaves you captivated to want to know about the characters and more about Ellodette! As she tried to survive in place where shes unfamiliar with and see each obstacle she must climb to prove her worth. See the darken fae whoms eyes meet the stars and his glaze will make you melt! Or see the human male whoms wittiness and sharpen tongue will have you wondering what exchange will take next! Every lie, each step of fate leaves you curious wondering and thinking you may know! I already am looking forward for book two.

I really liked this book, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

The world building was done well, the characters personalities were realistic, and likable. It’s hard to get into a series if the main character is dumb all the time and oblivious to everything around them, and this book was not like that at all. The slow burn between Ette and Rome is done well, I do wish we could learn a bit more about him, and I’m super curious about how other relationships might evolve, and also about their skills!!

I really liked that the characters were unique and not at all like characters in most romantasy books, they aren’t all beautiful and fully human like, some look different and don’t sound appealing lol

I will DEFINITELY be looking for book 2.

Wow this book was amazing!! The story was just so...wow...I can't even describe it! The FMC was basically given the short end of the stick in life and well...she still puts on a brave face and pushes through life even when things get bad...the story flowed well and I couldnt put it down once I started reading...the MMC was such a pretentious a hole...I wanted to stab him in the groin lol. The cliffhanger! Omg the cliffhanger at the end...I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!! I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in this series and the anticipation is absolutely killing me! I would definitely recommend this book! I recieved an advance reader copy of this book for an honest voluntary review.

I was gifted this ARC by the author. It has a little bit of everything I love, fantasy, fae, mystery, slick mouthed MFC and tall dark and fictional men. The world and character building was great however I felt this book to be super choppy and kind of hard to follow at times. Minimal spice, definitely YA friendly. The last two chapters of this book are where things really get interesting and it's left on cliffhanger. Definitely worth the read and to follow through with the next book. It was a good debut novel from this author and I can see a lot of growth and potential in all the novels to follow.

Lies of Fate by K. R. Rand is an absolute gem and an easy 5-star read for me. It’s one of those books you pick up “just for a bit” and suddenly you’re halfway through because you can’t stop. The story is packed with twists, but they never feel forced—they actually add to the tension and keep things exciting. The characters are messy in the best way, making their choices feel real and sometimes frustrating, which I loved. The writing flows really smoothly too. Overall, it’s gripping, emotional, and seriously hard to put down.

Step into the fey court with Ellodette Xaládiean.

She is an Arcanist, but a very weak one. Forced to leave her small town to enter the Fey Court while her mother travels in search of Feybane, a key ingredient in the decoction Ette has to take daily.

When she arrives, an outsider, hardly any magic and is humiliated from the get go, can she rise and prove she is worth being sent to the Court.

You are edged the entire time on Ette embracing the Fey Court lifestyle and the men who seem to be drawn to her.

Cannot wait for book 2 to see how these relationships continue or fail.

Okay, first things first, Rone. That’s it. That’s the review. 😂

But seriously, Lies of Fates was such a fun read. The premise was what initially caught my attention, and I really enjoyed seeing the story unfold. There were plenty of twists, secrets, and moments that kept me invested, and I loved the overall direction of the plot.
Rone completely stole the spotlight for me. I was sucked in every time he entered the story. I am so excited to see where the story will take us in the next book!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was an enjoyable read! It was easy to picture the world and people so easy! Ette has little to no magic and is sent off to the fey court to try and get help with her magic. Ette uses the knowledge and tools she learned from her mother to help survive in the fey court! This was a great start to the series and can't wait for more!

This book has amazing world building and character development. The relationships in it build slowly and with a true depth. No insta love or insta friendships. I believe this gives the book a depth beyond an ordinary romance.

I would actually rate this as four and a half stars. Not a five star read for me but I don’t have many five star reads. I found myself trying to really pay attention and try to read between the lines to figure out where the story was headed. I really got into the story and can’t wait for the next book!
